There isn't a thread floating around about the ever-so popular Ayu... so I thought it would be appropriate to create one. Then I can merge all the individual conversations/threads floating around into this one!

Lessons : Piano, Japanese calligraphy (5th rank), abacus calculation, Japanese flower arrangement, Kumonshiki study system
About My Lyrics : I like to try to view my own and my friends' experiences objectively, and put my honest feelings into words. If I write when I'm low, it will be a dark song, but I don't care. I want to be honest with myself at all times.
[Excerpt from Ayumi's personal profile page about herself]
To be honest. To be myself. This is easy to say, but difficult to do. Nowadays the world is full of greed and lies, and most people just stand aside avoiding trouble. But some people do strive toward their dreams and try to be themselves. Such people shine and make the rest of us willing to support them.

Ayumi Hamasaki released her debut single "p0ker face" on April 4, 1998. Ayumi chose to be an artist to express her true self and feelings, and took a trip to New York in the summer of 1997 to take vocal lessons. "Going to New York promised me nothing in terms of becoming professional. I just had to believe in myself," she says.

A debut as an artist... how could she succeed as a professional singer? What would she have to do? With no answer to these questions, Ayumi flew to New York full of anticipation and fear. Sensitive as she is, Ayumi not only developed her skills as a vocalist, but also developed mentally by coming across fresh ideas unknown in Japan and by watching the self-confident behavior of New Yorkers.

"To tell the truth, I was very anxious at first. But I was encouraged by the sight of young children living earnestly, and valuing themselves honestly without hesitation. In New York, I made many technical achievements, and moreover, I grew stronger at heart."

Now mature both as a vocalist and a person, Ayumi started writing lyrics as soon as she returned to Japan. Her style is to view her own and her friends' experiences objectively, and to write about them in her own honest words. In "p0ker face," she writes about strength within sorrow.

"At first, the song was about a weaker girl," Ayumi remembers. "But you can cry anytime, and I wanted to smile at those sad, lonely moments. I rewrote the lyrics over and over, and finally finished the song the day before the vocal recording."
Starting with this debut single, Ayumi has written all the lyrics of the songs she releases. The lyrics won't include fake thoughts or even flights of imagination. As Ayumi says, "I don't want to lose myself or lie to myself. I don't feel much stress about being myself. It's not difficult for me. It's just being natural. Being true to yourself isn't something you strive for."

The music on "p0ker face" is produced by Yasuhiko Hoshino (composition) and Akimitsu Honma (arrangement). The track is done in a pop style that captures the essence of the 80s sound. Its melody blends seamlessly with the world described in Ayumi's lyrics, and sweetly embraces her lonesome touching voice.

"When I received the song's tape, I thought 'What a difficult song!' When I made a trial recording with the first lyrics (before rewriting), I hated it. But with the current lyrics, I could feel the song at once... and could sing it better than any other song I had tried. My voice came out naturally and the song became so much mine that I forgot I'd thought it was difficult."

Brilliant vocal technique perfecting difficult songs. Talented lyrics of honest feeling. Ayumi's rise has just begun. Look for her to soon make a name for herself as a top artist.

We all gotta admit that ayumi has changed quite a bit over the last few years. Remember those songs..'appears'....'Depend on you'....' A song for Xx'....etc....these songs represent the old her, where her voice was considered more...'high-pitched'. but we gotta admit, she became pretty famous from her old songs.

On the other hand, there's the new 'womanized' version of her....where her music revolves around a lot of rock and alternative....such as 'GAME'...'because of you'...'is this Love?'...etc. For those who have listened to her new album 'My story', ....Humming 7/4 was definetly rock!!!....but then there are those slow songs like CAROLS....that are considered Slow songs...

Question is: Now that she is more mature...and has a voice that is considerably "not-as-high-yet-high" pitched voice....which ayumi would you prefer? the old her...or the new her?? Think about it before you answer...

HERE'S A LIL BIO ON HER

If you're in Japan, you've seen that face. The huge vacant eyes and 'lemur caught in the headlights', 'am I real or just a robot' expression that for some strange reason makes certain young people want to buy a Tsu-ka mobile phone. And then there's the voice, a kind of husky Minnie Mouse effect. But, the critics will have you know, this is a J-Popster with a difference. This girl writes her own song lyrics and in them she is not afraid to speak her mind. She is also a fashion leader who commands the unquestioning respect of schoolgirls across the country.

Hamasaki grew up in Fukuoka in southern Japan listening to her older brother's rock music collection (Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple) but, like Utada Hikaru, later drifted towards the soul music of Babyface and En Vogue. She spent time in New York getting vocal lessons and perhaps this time spent abroad accounts for her self-confidence and independent spirit. She returned to Japan to make her debut in 1998. Within a couple of years she had released more than a dozen singles and a clutch of albums.

Getting to the top of the J-pop world is one thing. Staying there is another. Ayu has had her share of bad press, a lot of it to do with her "diva" image and her being something of a control freak. Given how the music business in Japan is built on record labels pulling all the strings and singers and bands being money-making puppets, perhaps it's understandable. She took another hit after having a go at a front-row fan at one of her gigs who insisted on sitting through the set. It turned out the fan was disabled, and the wide shows and Net rumor mills fed off the story.

But Ayu couldn't be kept down for long. Her relationship with Nagase Tomoya of the Johnny's band Tokio has kept her in the spotlight, with reporters speculating on when the pair will get hitched. And there have been a lot more TV and radio appearances in an all-out "image-up" assault. She even designed a cartoon character in her own image. "Ayupan" quickly became popular among the high school girl set.

Hamasaki strives to always be honest in her lyrics, writing from experience and letting the bad times come through with the good (she lists Nicholas Cage and his dark cult classic Leaving Las Vegas as favorites). But it looks like nothing but good times ahead for this songstress.

Did she really had a plastic surgery? Or is it just the type of make up that she puts on, that makes her look so different.

yeah ayumi is really great. her singing is excellent and I'm so into her songs. she's been my favourite singer for around 2 months now. but I think her looks are kinda weird. sometimes she looks so young to me and it seems like she has this cute baby face.. but then at other pictures, she looks a bit old and.. um.. just really different. and her smile is kinda weird.. sometimes.... but I still like her A LOT! laugh.gif
marshey905

Especially when she's younger, she looked more like ruby.

She's very pretty. I also think that she can sing. Just her voice seems a little high in some songs. She's alright though.

Her huge eyes just throw all the 'Asian people have tiny eyes' stereotype out the window. Her eyes are very nice.
*Yangirl*
Let talk about her music and PVs

I watch Game PV; it's awsome ; anyone did watch it here ???? let share your feelings ^__^
