Synopsis:
Are fibs really as harmless as they seem? In the hot new drama "My Girl", even the "art" of white lies results in dramatic consequences. It starts out with a sassy girl named Ju Yoo-Rin trying to stall a plane for her clients (who are tourists at the company where she currently works as a tour guide) through her talent as an imposter who is good at lying. She was then given permission to go on the plane to look and stop her "love" from going away. It was when she pretends to faint right in front of a rich 2nd generation heir to a big hotel corporation, Seol Gong Chan.
The two meet again when Yoo Rin is chased by some gang members, to whom her father owes lots of money. As Yoo Rin suddenly jumps in front of Gong Chan's car, she pretends to be injured, but fails to persuade Gong Chan to compensate her "emotional stress" because of the accident. As Gong Chan looks at Yoo Ri's business card, he found that she can speak Chinese, English, and Japanese proficiently. He then asks her to translate for some of his Chinese tourists.
As one incident leads to another, the two meet in many awkward situations (Yoo Ri staying at his house on Jeju Island, and stealing his tangerines to sell). Until one day, when his grandfather was on his deathbed hoping to see is long-lost grand-daughter (Gong Chan's cousin) before he parts this world. In desperation Gong Chan asks Yoo Ri to be his fake cousin (with the promise of great compensation). As Yoo Ri agrees, she does not know that this little lie they started will turn out to be so horrific.
The story seemingly starts to look like a Cinderella story, where Yoo Ri turns from being very poor and always on the run from her father's debts into having all the riches, and loving family by her side. However, every party has its ending, and it starts when Gong Chan's girlfriend comes back. Kim Sae-HYoon left Gong Chan two years before to compete in her tennis tournaments, thinking that it would be all ok when she gets back.
The more Gong Chan tried to suppress his strong feelings for Sae-Hyoon, the more he realized that he still loved her despite her mistake. As soon as they got together again, Yoo Rin suddenly had the feeling of falling for Gong Chan. It is also at this moment when Seo Jeong-Woo (Gong Chan's friend and partner in running the hotel corporation) reveals his love for Yoo Rin. Yoo Rin immediately rejects him, and Jeong-Woo refuses to believe it and continues to court her.
The real problem didn't start until Gong Chan too starts having feelings for Yoo Rin. They had the obligation of staying cousins in front of their family, and suppressing their feelings for one another. It becomes a tragedy when the two reveal their true feelings for one another, and Sae-Hyoon and Jeong-woo do everything to pull them apart.
Sae-Hyoon goes and tells the grandfather (who's not fond of her) that Yoo Ri is the fake cousin and that she heard from Yoo Rin's dad (remaining anonymous to the grandfather) that the real cousin is someone else. Jeong-woo convinces Yoo Ri that Gong Chan will never love her the way he loves Sae Hyoon, and their lie will be revealed if she didn't go with him to America.
In the end, the two lovers are separated by the grandfather's wrath for two years. Then they are reunited again by the coincidence of what brought them together (Yoo Rin's business card), with Yoo Rin's last lie saying that pretending to be the faking cousin was all planned by herself and her father for getting all of Gong Chan's wealth. However, everyone saw the real Yoo Rin, and her lies were seen as the true love that she was expressing towards Gong Chan. The grandfather finally realizes that if he separated these two, history would repeat itself, and he would then lose another relative he truly loves. And the two are then permitted to be together!!!
Review:
This Korean drama is a very short, sweet, comical, and sassy one!! Lee Da Hae did an excellent job as the spunky and sassy girl Yoo-Rin. I have never seen her in such a funny role, and it is a refreshingly new experience.
The drama itself deals with the serious issue of lying to loved ones, doing everything to retain a lost love, and sacrificing for love. That is also what makes it so great, because it deals with the facts of real life issues, such as having a change of heart (after 2 years of suffering, I don't see why someone wouldn't), opposites attracting (the aunt and driver), and falling for the ones who don't love you.
What really got me hooked onto this drama is while it shows realistic issues of true life (many daydreaming and feelings being expressed)it also had the many characteristics of a true Korean drama (coincidences, fate bringing the two together, and emotional moments of being apart from your loved ones). It is an awesome, heartwarming drama that addresses real life issues in a very comedic and creative way! And it also doesn't hurt that the actors are super HOT!! It has become one of my highly recommended dramas of 2005, as well as on the top of my MUST SEE LIST!
