Chinese i like because other than the fact that i maybe biased but the songs are more cultural some of them and sound good with good lyrics and the artists generally compose the music themselves like jay chou or write the lyrics (generally) yet im not too familiar with other music but last i check Korean is still better in certain areas like Rain is very very good some of his songs are great since his music is more modern in a sense like american music yet im not sure if he writes or composes his own music so he loses points there but the songs are definitely good i will admit and than Sg wannabe produced a fantastic bunch of songs and mvs which i still consider Koreans to triump over chinese and japanese in MV's and the hiphop music

What are your opinions of Chinese music and Korean music? What are their differences, similarities, strengths, and weaknesses? Which do you prefer? List songs that are good etc.
Chinese Music: Mainly concentrated towards ballads moving towards the more American style/ modern music yet still preserving chinese culture in the music. (Jay Chou Wang Leehom) In Chinese music i've found to love some of their songs for the reason that i find more of the artists such as Jay Chou and Wang Leehom although they can't dance well they seem more real and talented, because not only do they have great vocies, but their music is either composed or written by themselves which shows true musical talent in my eyes. They both combine some chinese influence into their music preserving the chinese culture in their music. Chinese music has a weakness in veering off from ballads and meaningful music. The music videos aren't astounding or amazing. Hip hop, r&b, rap is a major weakness in Chinese music compared to korean. There are little or very few Chinese artists who are good at either of the new music genres. Hip hop, r&b, rap is beginning to be addressed and acomplished, but has yet to make an impressive statement. Yet, I find a majority of the music from jay chou and wang leehom to be good some what i feel bored in hearing the same ballads over and over and yern for better beats and newer songs in the hip hop r&b rap genres.
Korean Music: Im not korean so im not too familiar but i have seen and have many friends who are korean so ive listened and watched some korean music. I am very impressed with Rain in his music career for he is pretty much i consider the best asian male to accomplish some good hip hop i suppose songs that are addicting and almost impossible to get bored of. I've listened to his songs Im comming, Sad Tango, In my bed, and some what of I still believe more than a substantial amount and it has not once bored me. I'm usually swayed by mood but im very into all around music and i do appreciate and like the few astounding songs in hip hop and r&b since i find there are very few that come by. Sg wannabe ive fallen in love with their great MV's and some of their song slike only wind only wind, partner for life, timeless especially. Their songs have a lot of passion and strong vocals and are very good i find even though i don't understand them. Korean music to me has better artists in the hip hop r&b and rap genres and some what ballads. Koreans spend more money on their music industry i think. So overall i classify koreans to be ahead in the music industry than the Chinese.
I like both and have yet to come in touch with some really good Japanese music, except for the few anime songs and ayumi hamasaki =)
Anyways both chinese music and korean music are very good both are getting better, but i still yern for some newer and better music in both xD

I'd say Chinese music. I think it's this because I can understand what they are singing and I'm more exposed to their kind of music because of my Chinese background. And from what I know, compared with Korean and Japanese artists, many more Chinese artists compse and write their own songs. That has given me a deep impression.
I do listen to Korean music, but not all. The only Korean singer I listen to is Se7en. xD So really no comment. I'm trying out more Korean singers now though. Like I'm trying to find more DBSK and other artists' albums. They sound pretty good.
And I just don't listen to Japanese music at all, lol.

Chinese music as in Taiwanese or Hong Kong or China?
Taiwanese music is the best in my opinion. Most of the artists are talented singers/musicians and the music is good quality.
HK Cantonese Pop is the worst in my opinion (I was born in HK), the artists have no talent in singing/performing. The music quality is very poor.

i like your comment. it express how i feel about the asian music industry
but you can't really compare chineses, japanese, korean songs because they all have their own uniqueness. It all come down to which type of music you like
i personally like chinese music, then jap then korean
because i am chinese so i understand chinese music.
and i am tired of hip pop/rap. i really had enough of those.
but chinese music industry like to put a twist in hip pop/rap. they add a traditional chinese twist to flavor it up. for ex. like you said jay chou/leehom........
then jap is really good at making rock, my favorite band is tokyo incident...they are really unique.
i don't know korean music industry that well, rain is pretty good until his newest album. some of the songs reminds me of Chris brown. i think korean music is to americanized.... and i am just not in the mood for the american hip pop/rap right now. oh yeah, korean singers are really good at dancing....

I love chinese music, partly because i am a chinese and can understand what are they singing..sometimes can hum along with it. It will be different for either kore or japanese songs because i dont understand a word of it.. so i'll say my 'vote' goes to chinese music! =D

Chinese, because i don't understand korean or jap, although i wish i did. Some krn songs are really nice and a few jrock songs are good too.
But if English was an option then i'd defintely choose English.

for me, Cantopop in first for me! because i like the language Cantonese and though other poeple say that its crap and nothing like what it used to be, i still think that the younger generation (eg. Kay, Khalil, Pong Nan etc) are very good, and there is still talented people such as Eason Chan, Denise Ho who are still producing gret music!
Mandrain is probably second but there is rarely much Mandrain songs that i can keep listening and listening without getting sick of it

I think a lot of the comparison has to do with the inherent language as well. A friend of mine, he is Chinese as well, expressed that he didn't like listening to Chinese music because of the tonality of the Chinese language. The Chinese language is well formulated to sing ballads and slow songs... and just that. I was telling my friend about it once. If I wanted to learn some Japanese, I could probably listen to Japanese music. If I wanted to learn some Korean, I could probably listen to Korean music... and pick up some small phrases along the way... and have a vaguely accurate accent.
Chinese music? If you aren't a native Chinese speaker, you could listen to it for ages... and STILL not be able to even attempt to correctly sound out the tone. Plus, I think that the rhythmical pattern inherent in the Korean language allows for it to be sung better as well.
Nonetheless... I think it all varies. I don't like to single out "Oh, I like Chinese music" or "Oh, I like Korean music..." I just like music, y'know? I think some Chinese stuff is great; I think some Korean stuff is great.
But with that said... Korea has also been more open to Western influences (like hip hop and R&B) for longer than China has. Even now, China is still fairly stringent on what it allows in and doesn't. Still... I think Korea has a lead... but I think Taiwan is slowly showing that it could be a major competitor in the showbiz.

It's so easy to dance to Korean music!
chinese music has tons of ballads, not enough of genres for my liking.

I agree with what you said for chinese music, but you left out canto music which is a part of chinese music... Although canto music is nothing like it was in the 80's and 90's we got some pretty good newcomers and they are improving the music scene.

I started off listening to nothing but Korean music, then after the whole FinKL/SES era ended I started to listen to some Japanese music, then stopped when I couldn't find much interest other than Hikki and Koda Kumi and been listening to Cantopop ever since. Still listening to J and Kpop though, just not as much

I haven't read/followed anything on the American music scene in like 7 years.

im chinese and i dont realli understand what they try to say in their songs. so i only listen to ones that i like and i sorta understand.
the new english songs are pretty much all crap since most of the artists cant sing and its all this rock, rap stuff that i dont like. i do listen to some that i think are really beautiful or has meaning.
i really like Jpop since it has different styles and catchy tunes. im learning Japanese currently so that will help me to catch on faster.
for Korean songs iv only listened to Rain and Se7en and i find sometimes the style of their songs are all the same. but i like Kmusic aswell.
i like Jpop the best xD

I have always listened to Chinese (especially Cantonese) music but now, I am listening more and more to Korean. I guess the thing that first pulled me into Korean music was the Korean drama OST. Korean dramas have hands down the best soundtracks. I don't even understand Korean but it doesn't matter when the song and singer is good. I would recommend Se7en (great dancer & singer), Big Bang, Eru, Brian (Fly to the Sky), TVXQ, Clazziquai, Jang Ri In, Jung Chul, Kangta...

I'm definitely a KPop person! Haha! My laptop is full of Korean songs while Chinese and Japanese songs are totally outnumbered!

I guess it's coz I'm really interested in Korean culture and coz I love Korean dramas. And it's a good way to learn some Korean.
cantonese, i dont like mandarine so ya..... however, if i understand japanese, i will choose jap =P lyric wise...... cantonese is better i think..... Mandarine songs r all the same, and they dont give the feeling to me. i cant feel anything wheni listen to mandarine songs.............. As for cantonese.... i can feel it!, the strong feeling + LOVe + everythign!!!

Maybe instead of copying off the West, China will create something new. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I am chinese so obviously I would like more chinese music. Like said Jay and Leehom try to add the Western style w/ Asian cultures, which I like but most of my friends hate that. iono why. To me, most songs have the same sort of pop style to it. This is why people think that Chinese music is different from American. C-music is sorta like the nonstop of nsync, backstreet boys, britney spears, the late 90s type. I like it though.
I don't listen much to krn music, but I heard of some. They are more westernized but they don't really have their own style. Like Rain copies a lot from Usher and I think my friend said it was either big bang or super junior that was similar to b2k. Their songs are catchy though.
However the major problem i have about comparing these two cultures is that Koreans are always pushing their stars into the US but the chinese are left in the shadow. I am in the US and it's rare to ever see any stars here. However Koreans are always having auditions, talent shows, music festivals, major concerts here. I hope Chinese people can get more exposure to be somewhat more united and bring something good to the US.

I like that Chinese music isn't completely westernized. It allows for more creativity, just look at Leehom and his fusion of classical Chinese and hip-hop style beats.
And as usual, while the mainstream might be filled with nothing but ballads. The underground scene is always producing something different.

What's better is really subjective. Everyone's opinion is a little different. I've heard a lot of Korean and Chinese music. Although I'm Chinese, I have to say that overall, Koreans have stronger vocals and they put more feelings into their songs. Sure, there are Chinese singers out there that can hold a note but there are many out there who can't and they rely on a cute face and nice body to keep their popularity. There's only a handful of Chinese singers that I know who can truly sing. Although I hate to admit how right my parents are, their generation had singers who actually understood proper pitch....and this opinion is coming from someone who doesn't even like old Chinese music. It's too bad they don't hold modern day singers to higher standards.
Not that dancing is important, but if you include it as part of the whole entertainment package, then Koreans have more singers who can dance well. Dancing and singing are 2 different things but if you look at it as the entire musical stage experience, I suppose dancing adds to the experience. Overall, I think Koreans singers are better stage performers.
When it comes to songs, I would say that Chinese and Korean singers have equal amounts of good slow songs (ballads). There are many new Taiwan singers trying to break into rapp/hip hop right now but they're not quite at the level they should be at. They're not "street" enough. They don't have that rapp/hip hop essence. A lot of them don't have the right voice for rapp. I think given a few more years, there will be some decent hip hop artists out of Taiwan or Hong Kong but it's going to take some time. You also have to keep in mind that Korea didn't get to where they are overnight. A lot of Korean singers start really young. Many of you may not know but Se7en started training in his teens. BoA started even younger. To do anything well, you need to practice. I believe many Korean singers train really hard even before they make their debut. Chinese singers are able to do the same thing but the music industry has to set these standards in order for their entertainers to perform at this level.

i used to be in the whole 'kpop scene' in my high school days til i realized that it wasnt the music that i liked, but it was how they portrayed it. I used to like Hyori but then I came to the conclusion that she cant sing for crap. She just knows how to dance. In my opinion, and this is not meant to offend anyone, but i just think that Chinese/Taiwan and Japanese artists are just more humble with what they do. I'm not being biased or anything so please don't attack me! There is one korean artist that I've always liked and that is BoA. I mean despite what I've read about her bad attitude in the past, I still think she's a hardworker. But personally I still prefer Chinese [mandopop]. I guess it just gives me a more familiar feeling and I can relate to it more.
