In my few friends we have been discussing about recent christmas problem as my friends say that we can now not call christmas holidays christmas holidays we have to call it seasons holiday. Also christmas lights are not called seasons light, this is all because immagrants are offended by christmas.
I personally think if they are moving in to a different country then they should accept that countries culture. Also know Santa's Grotto isn't allowed in much places because it also 'offends' them.
What do you think? does Christmas offend you?
nanko
no it doesn't offend me at all. it' my favorite holiday! with all the lights, the presents, people coming together.....it gives out such a warm feeling. i love it!!!!
prankster
DEFINITELY NOT!!!I find christmas to be one of the best holidays in the whole year...all the nice pretty lights....sale going on here and there....presents to receive.....and a big meal feast usually prepared by my parents....to look forward to
FSUTan
people in china celebrate christmas lol. but i don't think it should OFFEND anyone just because it's not like anyone is pushing the belief of Santa/Christmas upon you. If you don't believe in Christmas, then don't. but who can NOT accept presents =)
dragonfly69uk
i think the media in the west tends to blow things up to create a hatred of foreigners in among their under-educated readers. countries like england, newspapers print stories about christmas decorations being banned, christmas cancelled etc... and they moan that those activities restricted for fear of offending muslim.. it's not the muslim people call for christmas to be cancelled, it's the people in municipal offices decide so
JiAn
y christmas can offend someone? i don think so. i think christmas is a nice holiday. even though im chinese, i still join the christmas party to enjoy their fun. so i don think tat christmas is gonna offend anyone.
`appleGreen
i dont think isreal people would get offened because christmas is a christian celebration and jesus was from isreal. i dont get offended by christmas..i actually like the "christmas break." but sometimes i wonder why they make it a country wide celebration in canada when half the people here dont celebrate it. not only, christmas is influenced to kids at school that are non christian...but i thought schools are suppose to teach subjects non related to religion.
cococreamz
don't have a religion so xmas doesn't offend me at all.... but i do enjoy the holiday and appreciate it as a time to be able to get my family and friend pressie and have fun together ^^
dan168
I don't see why it should offend anyone. If they don't want to celebrate it, don't celebrate it. I personally love it, so many colourful lights and decorations and giving and receiving smile.gif
Leviathan
i don't really care, i can understand people saying that it offends them, but tolerate i am pretty sure someone hates something about your culture as well. but christmas is good because of the long vacations mainly
TomithyChen
Frankly, it doesn't offend me at all, and I'm not Christian. It's funny, because it's really not the date of the birth of Christ, it has its origins as a Pagan holiday. But in theory it's so pure and innocent, how could it offend you?
chuppy
christmas is fun,, u get parties everywhere, and especially u get a public holiday..this is good for people who is working and for people who is studying,,it gives them a time to relax.
i love christmas, and also can get present
liondoncefreak
No, Christmas doesn't offend me. And I've not come across anyone who is offended by Christmas either, be it Christians or not. But I did read about cases where the Christmas season sparks off a 'war' between those for-Christmas and those against-Christmas unsure.gif
impression151
It's probably just religious fanatics, like people in the Middle East.
reiyi
Why is Christmas offensive? I'm living in an Islamic country (Malaysia) where the majority of citizens are Muslim, but people still celebrate Christmas here. During Christmas time, some streets are filled with people celebrating. We also have lots of Christmas movies aired on TV during Christmas time, and shopping complexes decorated with Christmas trees. I don't see any Muslims protesting about it. I don't think the Muslim community in England will be as annal as to get offended by a festival that has been held in their country for many ages. This political correctness stuff is getting way overboard.
forever_autumn
I hate political correctness. Christmas doesn't offend me at all, but if it does to other people then let it be. The winter holidays are nice! smile.gif

Yeah christmas offends me, especially that fat guy in the red suit. The guy must stink cause he's been wearing that same outfit for several decades now.

The guy thinks he's all badass siting in his chair and making you line up at the store just so you can sit on his damn lap like some 2 year old baby. He then gives you a "Candy" Cane to further prove what a baby you really are.

Who does this guy think he is, who let him be the judge of who's offiially "naughty or nice", who asked for his opinion anyways.

What's with his ugly beard, every other guy with a beard is a terrorist (Osama, Sadam, Fidel Castro etc.) and this guy gets to be called "Saint" Nick. I know why, it's cause his beard is "White!"

The cops ought to arrest this guy for tresspassing, what gives him the right to land a sleigh on your roof top and then jump down your chimney while everyone is fast asleep. I mean if he was so innocent, then he wouldn't be walking around at night trying to sneak down your smokestack. He even has the balls to eat your cookies and drink your cow milk too!

Where's the human rights activists when you need them, this fat dude keeps a bunch of midgets locked way in his "North Pole" and forces them to make toys at his Sweatshop. The only reason why he keeps midget slaves is cause, they're too short too kick the guy's fat ass. How pathetic, the guy can't even pick on somebody his own size.

Worst of all, the guy advertises pimp behaviour. What kind of a role model goes around shouting "Ho Ho Ho" to little children. That fat sicko.

Nope it doesn't offend me and I can't stand people who thinks it's offensive. I mean if they find it so offensive then why don't they work on those days and not take the paid break? Too many of those people have nothing else better to complain about I guess.

LOL Nice post.

As for me, no it doesn't offend me but I don't like it. I think it's become such a commercialised holiday. It's just an excuse for the companies to cash in. It's supposed to be a Christian holiday. Why on Earth are Buddhists and people of other religions celebrating it anyway? Plus it's a pain buying gifts for people. I don't care about receiving gifts or not myself.

I'm not sure about other countries, but lately, here in America, there has been a big controversy on "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Holidays." The government and other things are trying to get people to say Happy Holidays instead because of the Christ in Christmas. They feel it's too religious. What do you have to say about it?
Sleepy_samurai
Huh??? why would the government want to do something like that?? because it is offensive to other religions, isn't being offensive to christains then because Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Christ who they believe is the saviour of the World. So what if they they say Merry Christmas to people its an act of good faith and wishing happiness upon them isn't it? Thats my take upon what Christmas is and will be.

Althought I am not Christain I will say Merry Christmas and I really don't care about what a government body will try and make me say because I have no malious intent in what I say if I did I would say it outright and not use something like a religious holiday.

The government bodies are thinking too much about things now and are turning countries into a Nanny state, I understand that it is required to respect religions of all faith but this is taking it a bit far what happened to respecting the Christain faith?
Edwise
I agree. I'm strongly against controlling what people say as Christmas greetings. What's the point of denying Christmas?
rhovan_faer
I think the governments are concerned about being politically correct. Recently I've started saying "Happy Holidays" as well as "Merry Christmas". Living in a multicultural country, I know many people who are not Christian and just to be safe, I don't want to offend them. However, the concept of Christmas has been so commercialized that, I think, it has moved so far from the original Christian celebration. Nowhere in the Bible is there a Santa Clause (St. Nick / Kris Kringle / Father Christmas or whatever you call him) and yet he is the biggest symbol of Christmas. I think Christmas has become cross cultural as a time for families to gather and to celebrate life together.
teddygirl
i don't get why such a big deal about it? even though it involves a religon, its only a greeting.
^__^
i say happy holidays just becuase i don't celebrate christmas.
mizpolly1031
Christmas will always be Christmas....Its a tradition....If some certain people are sentative about saying "Merry Christmas" then they shouldn't say it...People shouldn't have to change their traditions just because of a few non believers.
GenuinelyKnown
There was a Roman holiday that was celebrated in December in Jesus' time. They changed a little bit of that and there you have Christmas. There's a theory that Christ wasn't even born in Dec. The details do not match. Christmas has become a commercial holidy. I have no problem with the government saying "Happy Holidays", because it is a multicultural country. Not only Christians celebrate Christmas. People just get sucked up by the media and society. Saying "Merry Christmas" does not offend me because I am a Christian. The government is only trying to keep the statement general so that it is inclusive.
jadedreams27
I really don't understand why all the sudden hyper sensitiveness of words used. For example, the "under god" for the Pledge of Allegiance. I've said that phrase everyday, except weekends and holidays, in Elementary School and Middle School. It's just a phase.

Same with Christmas and Holidays. I say it all the time, to all people of different races. I don't think they regard it as a problem either. It's a word to symbolize a day to celebrate with family and friends. It would not hold a religious value or meaning if you do not think of it is.

What you believe is what you believe, no words can change your religious belief. If they can, then you are fickle, and then you need to question whether you are truly faithful to your religion.
tanyl78
i dont think there will be a big deal in singapore... we have holiday for muslim, tamil, chinese etc... we still wish each other happy deepavali, selamat hari raya, etc...

but maybe in other muslim countries, i think they are more religious... and i dont know in america they are becoming like this too...
lilbluehorse
I live in America and everyone is saying Merry Christmas. I know some people do not celebrate Christmas because of religious rituals. I think Christmas is a time for happiness, job, and people being together. Its important for everyone to respect other people's holidays. I say Merry Christmas when I know people are celebrating this event. If they celebrate Hanakah, I would say Happy Holiday. I don't see a big deal about it as long as everyone is happy.
aznxthuggie
in china, they don't really celebrate xmas, instead it's an excuse to go out for everyone.
AzNdAtLuVz
i say both merry christmas and happy holidays...i think its for da religious reasons...
Ancillary Character
If I know someone is Christian, I'll wish them a Merry Christmas; if I'm unsure, then it's Happy Holidays. "Happy Holidays" is a more inclusive greeting. By only wishing someone a "Merry Christmas," you're basically pretending Hannakuh doesn't exist, nor does Kwanza.

Of course I find it ridiculous that anyone would refer to a Christmas tree as a "holiday tree." The tree is only associated with Christmas!
happyswallow
I personally don't care. I don't see why people are making a big deal about "the meaning of Christmas" and stuff about the birth of Christ when Christmas is just turning into another excuse to go shopping.
sbl123
I've heard of this ridiculous issue. First of all, you have every right to say what you want in this country. Isn't that the whole point of the Freedom of Speech? And what does all this have to do with the government? How can they come out and try to encourage people to say "Happy Holidays" when what they want to say is "Merry Christmas"? And as for the Christmas tree...why do we have to refer to it as a "Holiday tree"???? The tree is for Christmas! That, and Santa Clause, are some things that symbolizes Christmas. We've been okay with this for so long. Why are these people making such a big deal now?
--xfaiiry
This is ridiculous. They say its too religious , when they seem to pull religion into every issue there is in this country. What ever happened to "freedom of speech"? Do they seriously have NOTHING eles better to do? Its been like this for years " Merry Christmas" and now all of a sudden they want to change it? Its always the government that has a problem with it ... if the PEOPLE had a problem with it , it would have been reported years and years ago. Whats the big thing anyways. Now when you go into big department stores like Macys and etc they all say Happy Holidays and not Merry Christmas anymore. Sigh
shyqt
omg but the holiday is called christmas...so it'd be appropriate for ppl to be saying "Merry Christmas" to each other..... Happy Holidays can mean any holiday and Merry Christmas is to be specific
G0OS3
china is too poor for xmas present....and Santa is racist, he only give gifts to white kids. So, i doubt there is actual xmas celebration in china.
Deru
Xmas is really a western holiday. I don't think they celebrate it. I mean, thinking about the number of traditional people there, I just can't picture them celebrating it like us. They may just take a break and spend some time with relatives. Can't picture them with santa hats, lights, etc.

Hong Kong on the other hand was under British rule for 100 years or however long so I've alwyas thought it was a more westernised island. I only know that they do celebrate it from watching TVB series. tongue.gif

Oh and Happy Christmas ppl!
Fresh
i don't think china exactly understand the meaning of christmas..since its a christian thing and china is mostly buddha..

but the meaning of christmas in the US have been dying slowly now..
people only get gives for others not knowing WHY.
Evalala
i agree with the government
people out there might not celebrat christmas
and if they are like jewish it kinda is aginst them

plus, saying happy holidays inclutes all the gift giving holidays plus new years so it would also be shorter
krillin2286
I mean... in some ways, the government is right. Some people do not celebrate Christmas, and I ASSUME that might be offensive to them.

But on the other hand, if a person wishes you a MERRY CHRISTMAS, they're just being nice and trying to tell you to have a great christmas, and in no way was it intentional.

I just think people take this Politically Correct thing, and blow it all out of proportion. It's ridiculous really.
arthur_tsang
There are NO official holiday for Christmas in China, but people are now celebrating for it just for fun.

You can see there are some celebrations, and some hotels or restaurants are offering special meals for Xmas.

One hotel in Hangzhou offers people with a Xmas room + dinner package for CNY 2888.

i agree. They don't know te history about Christmas or anything. For them, it's just an excuse to go out. For the hotels, malls, it just means lots of money.
Moreover there are many foreigners in China now. Chinese people are trying to become like them, more westernized.
babygirl
i think people need to be more politically correct because i dont celebrate christmas and i dont like it when people say merry christmas to me
liondoncefreak
I personally believe that even Merry Christmas isn't exactly a correct term to use, as I learnt of the term 'Blessed Christmas'. But yeah, that would cause more problems linked with religious issues, so I guess the general public should stick with Merry Christmas. I don't see a big fuss about it, cause Christmas these days have been stripped off by it's religiousness. Nowadays Christmas is more about Santa Claus rather than the birth of Christ, and is widely celebrated by non Christians. So I figure that Merry Christmas should stick as Merry Christmas rather than Happy Holidays.
cinciti
All this political correctness. It's like not saying Happy Chinese New Year and saying Happy Lunar New Year. Who cares what people say. On Christmas day it should be Merry Christmas. When is the other holidays celebrated. It isn't on the same day as Christmas, i think. It matters not. I think people are used to hearing Merry Christmas. Some people don't celebrate it and they still say it. If they make such a big deal people just shouldn't say anything.
cutiecloud182
I don't agree with the government because I dont think they should controll wat people say.. personally.. i said Merry Christmas to people on the.. 25th .. and... Happy New Year on the 1st..but if i want to make it quick.. that's when i say Happy Holidays.. For all these years people been saying Merry Christmas to year on the 25th.. and i dont exactly take it religiously.. so.. I dont agree with the government
BREAKneckspirit
personally.....merry christmas and happy holidays are words.....so you can say how you want them like curse words for example can mean something different in another language......ok lets get that outta the way

merry christmas may be a christian thing......by why are we discussing it now?, because the media and politics had to bring up such a stupid issue int he first place. kinda like the stupid argument over the pledge of allegience and the word god in it. as i say just you analyize words too much

merry christmas can be a time for giving and sharing familty time.....i mean besides the actual holiday most of us dont celebrate im assuming because we're mostly asian here. i mean its good that its at the end of the year so it can be treated as a way to relax. besides without christmas, we might still be in school.
