DBSG will be singing I Believe, Rising Sun, and 'O' Jung.Ban.Hap at the Hai Nan's concert! I hope there'll be some TV Station broadcasting the concert because I haven't seen them dancing Rising Sun and singing I believe for quite a long time ^^;

DBSG will be coming to HK on 29/11 but it's only for press conference and they'll only be in HK for 24 hours. They will then be going back to Korea for other promotional activities

Ch'uk'ahamnida to TVXQ again!! You've done a great job this year. Maybe you can sing live next year instead of lip synching.

I'm loyal to TVXQ, but I'd still make this criticism. If you noticed, SS501 and W-inds sang live. Especially W-inds!! They were impressive... singing immediately after breakdancing and yet they don't sound like they have difficulty breathing. But then, TVXQ danced non-stop for the entire song (SS501's routine was much more simple compared to TVXQ's) and that's hard as well. So my wish for them for the coming year is to build up that stamina and show the world that they can do it too! Aja!!!

I, myself was pretty dissapointed when they lip-synched. But then it's not like they can't sing live while dancing to O. They showed us plenty of times that they can sing 'O live. Fans know that they can sing live, but for people who don't know DBSK at all, it would've been nice if they sang the song live at Mnet.

I read that SM Ent value (visual) performance more than singing. So basically, SM Ent ordered DBSk to lip-synch. I find that odd and bizzare, because I think the singing always comes first before dancing.
Poor DBSK got bashed throughout Korean internet sites (even newspapers). But I am sure these people probably never saw DBSK performing live. I really hope SME learn from this, and allow our boys to sing live.

There were no foreign artistes except for W-inds. The JT and Killers song were performed by Korean artistes.

Teens swarm against the stage at DAR Constitution Hall, holding their cellphone cameras aloft, ready to fire. In nervous anticipation, a girl squeals, unleashing a torrent of Oh my Gods! and a wave of synchronized bouncing.

The object of their affection, a 26-year-old pop star named Danny, emerges in a plume of smoke and struts into a fog of high school estrogen. Jumbo rhinestone-studded crosses dangle from his neck. He peels down to his singlet, showing off lean tattooed arms and baring just enough of his glistening ice-hard chest to set off fountains of tears and howls of eye-squinting desire.

"Obbah," screams Elaine Park, a sophomore at Lake Braddock High School in Burke. "Obbah! You're so freaky sexy!"

Obbah? It means "elder brother" in Korean, and it's the sort of honorific that sets this teen crowd apart from one you might have found for, say, 'N Sync. Normally "older brother" wouldn't belong in the same sentence as "sexy," yet it's a combination that fits this culturally blended audience.

Other than that, it's an example of a classic teeny-bopper formula that works in Korea just as well as it does anywhere else, since the days of the bobby-soxers and the Beatles. "Ahnyong haseyo! What's up, D.C.?" he bellows, greeting the audience. They respond with even louder screams as a sea of neon glow sticks wave frantically in appreciation.

He launches into Korean rap, pumping his shoulders to the heavy hip-hop bass line of "Nasty," sung in English and Korean. His 1Tym group mate Teddy Park joins in, wearing a trucker hat over a Louis Vuitton do-rag: "Say He-ey! Say ho-oh!"

Born and raised near Los Angeles, Danny Im is among a growing cadre of Korean Americans who have broken into the Korean entertainment industry and now serve as K-pop stars to be exported globally.

Some hail from the suburbs of Northern Virginia: Chart-topper Micky Yuchun of boy group TVXQ attended Chantilly High before he became famous in Asia for his baby-face good looks and Justin Timberlake dance moves; Lee Ming Young of the best-selling pop duo As One is a graduate of Fairfax High School.

Like the thousand-plus fans at the multi-act concert at Constitution Hall last month, Danny grew up with one Converse-clad foot firmly planted in the beats and sounds of Snoop and Mariah, and the other in the burgeoning hip-hop and R&B scene of Korea. He and other artists, including the show's headlining star, Se7en, routinely sell out arenas in Korea and across Asia.

"You grow up hearing all kinds of music, languages and sounds growing up in America," says Danny, an eight-year veteran Korean singer and rapper. "Those experiences make you open to more things and more versatile. "

One in five residents of the Washington area is foreign-born, making imports like manga (Japanese comics) and bhangra (Punjabi music) part of the cultural vernacular of the youth. Global travel is more accessible. So is entertainment. In the world of teens, K-pop, J-pop and Taiwanese pop music and movies are a click away. Even some K-pop band names mean more than Americans realize: TVXQ, for example, is a transliteration of the name in Mandarin Chinese -- the group is also seeking a market in the Communist mainland.

This cultural shift has, of course, caught the attention of big business. In the past year, MTV World has launched three channels -- MTV Desi, MTV Chi and MTV K -- with a mix of content from the United States and Asia catering to Asian Americans.


"Asian American youth are coming of age in this country," said Nusrat Durrani, general manager of MTV World. "They are bicultural and demanding a more bicultural experience."

Micky Yuchun grew up in Seoul, where he was known as Yuchun Park. He immigrated with his parents, middle-class small-business owners, in the sixth grade. He watched Korean dramas on satellite TV and listened to the CDs of K-pop bands. At Holmes Middle School, Chantilly High and among friends, he soaked up the Backstreet Boys, Eric Clapton and MTV.

Three years ago he was plucked from talent contests in Northern Virginia to join one of Asia's hottest boy bands. He uses his American moniker, Micky, as his stage name.

"I felt 50-50 American and Korean," Micky, 21, says in a telephone interview from Seoul. "I think most Korean kids in America feel that way these days."

That's true of Alice Chang, 17, who has closely watched celebrities like Danny and Micky rise from the U.S. suburbs to globe-trotting stardom. The Fairfax native is making a run for fame herself: She plans to try out as a singer on "American Idol" next season. Fluent in Korean and possessing an encyclopedic knowledge of Korean entertainers, she has aspirations to become a K-pop star, too.

"I want to make it in American or Korean entertainment," says the Fairfax High senior. "I could see myself fitting in either."

So on a recent balmy Sunday afternoon, Alice is among about 200 hopefuls who show up at SM Entertainment's talent auditions at the Don Quixote bar and club in Alexandria. Parents pull up to the peeling facade of the two-story Latin dance club in their Honda Odysseys, dropping off sons and daughters -- perhaps the next Beyonces and Ushers of Korea. Five friends in knit caps and trucker hats practice break-dance moves in the parking lot, fine-tuning their footwork and robot-sharp turns. A dozen contestants are gathered around a parked minivan that is playing Korean music videos on two drop-down DVD screens.

Inside the Don Quixote, talent scout Jung Ah Kang of SM Entertainment sits behind a folding tablle on the dance floor as contestants come before her in groups of five. They each take turns singing a cappella for Kang, "Idol"-style. There's a silver disco ball overhead and Spanish-language beer posters on the walls.

Kang is stoic, taking careful notes while assistants train a video camera on the dance floor. After months of travel, she will return to Korea with only a handful of standouts to call back. One may be the next big thing for the Korean pop star machine.

Clean-cut, wearing an argyle sweater and jeans, Alice waits for her number to be announced. In a prayer-like gesture, she raises her clasped hands to her face and takes several deep breaths. "I'm not nervous. I'm not nervous," she tells herself.

When she is called, Alice introduces herself in Korean and then in English and sings "Sarah," a love ballad from Korean chanteuse BoA. Her voice sounds dry and she sings softly. Kang then asks Alice to dance freestyle for the camera along with four other contestants.

Just as baby boomers once fought over which Beatle would be their "boyfriend," teens Elaine Park, Joanne Kim and Christina Oh argue over who gets to "claim" Tae Yang of boy band Big Bang.

They are sophomores at Lake Braddock High and self-described BFFs -- best friends forever. All born and raised in Fairfax, the three have attended the same schools and churches since childhood. They've shared countless hours lounging in each other's bedrooms, the walls decorated with posters of Korean boy bands, memorizing lyrics and scouring Korean entertainment forums like Soompi.com for scraps of gossip.

At the concert at Constitution Hall, the three stake their claim to a small section in front of the stage. Elaine says she will go home happy if she can give Big Bang's Tae Yang a personal memento -- maybe her student ID.

As performers come on, one by one, the friends sing all the lyrics -- Korean and English -- to songs performed by Se7en, Gummy and Lexy. Arms interlaced, they sway side to side.

"I like American music too, but sometimes I find it too sexual," says 16-year-old Christina. "Korean music is more innocent, but still really fun."

Suddenly the stage falls dim. With a buildup of smoke and flashing lights, the six members of Big Bang come out to the heavily synthesized dance beats of the song "La La La."

The BFFs lose it as the music inspires a hormonal storm. The floor shakes. Fans jump and scream. "Musheesuh!" a girl in back yells. You are so handsome!

Elaine presses forward, trying to get as close as she can. Her moment arrives; Tae Yang comes to her part of the stage. She frantically grabs for something to give him: a water bottle. He takes it and smiles. She floats to another world, but a very familiar one.

Actually, it's not SM that values visual performances more. It's the whole Korean culture. The fans rather watch something 'perfect' with perfect dances and performances.

If you look at their Japan activities, their showcases, stages are pretty simple; It's practically bare I would daresay. Sometimes it's just 5 of them and the mikes [like M!on premium showcase] with no backstage dancers etc.. cuz in Japan, most fans expect live performances

I have yet to see any jap performance of them lipsyncing. YeT^^

About them lip-syncing
When I was watching their perf. for 'O' Jung.Ban.Hap, I was hoping that they could sing live for almost every perf, but they lip-sync-ed 　Then slowly I got used to it since most of the Korea singers did the same thing too when they're singing fast songs

It has been 2 years since I had met TVXQ! They were still very shy when I first saw them, however, today, when I met them again, they indeed had a drastic change. Yoon Ho had really become more handsome, but he still holds the firm and resolute eyes he had whenever he is dancing. As for Jae Joong, he becomes more pretty. However, it is a pity that I didn't get a chance to see him smiling from the route to airport to the rehearsal area. It was definte that Chang Min has the largest change as compared to the others. From far, he isn't a tall boy but now, a young lad with lots of muscles YooChun smile is still cheerful as usual, he seems to be even happier when he saw the beautiful view of this place. JunSu is well-know for his duck buttock?! where he dances with 100% power.

Six of us tried it today. It was okay! In fact, it was fun! As in, small groups, maybe max. 6 or 7. Then the appointed leaders go together into a conference and talk about their ideas they've discussed. And it wasn't unorganized. It was neat!

Which explains why JaeJoong's voice cracks (in a nice way) when he hits those high notes.... and the fact that he can hit those high notes. I heard that most popular singers cannot achieve that type of voice (even with training) unless they have previously smoked (Mariah Carey has admitted to it as well... and she can sing HIGH...!)

About MKMF :

Lee Soo Man & Mnet have a good relationship and once SM has had a SCANDAL with Mnet ( I'm not sure if it's true or not). People said that some years ago SM has bought prizes for their singers ( a few, not all ) in MKMF . This year , nobody can know whether it happened , but I think because of their good relationship ( SM & Mnet ) , Mnet favoured for SM's singers , especially Zhang Li Yin ( she sings live really badly ) . I read it in some forums & I'm not sure , so I hope u won't believe it totally because it's only a rumor that was begun by the lack of MKMF's prestige . Remember SM , Mnet & CJ Entertainment are close companies

Though I'm glad because our DBSK won many awards , but u see , many people are not satisfied , so I'm really sad . This doesn't mean I deny DBSK's talent & achievements but I can't stand SM . They don't let our boys sing live dance songs in most of important events ( in normal show ,it's not a matter ) although they can ( look at all their perf. in Japan ). Who will admit your talent if u lipsync even at a big event ?????? While W-inds sang live , Suju , SS501 , DBSK & Uhm Jung Hwa lipsync . I'm disappointed about this .

But I think because DBSK's pef. schedule is very tight ( almost everday) , so SM limits their live performance when they sing a dance song to protect their voice or something but I'm not sure . Most of SM's singers have sung lipsync before even Shinhwa or H.O.T . But lipsync in a big event like MKMF ... it'd better not

And do you guys take notice of some program such as Show Music Bank of KBS or Music Core of MBC that DBSK performed ? All singers must sing live . I like those programs ...

I don't think that marrying a fan would be so bad. Why would you want to marry another celebrity anyway? Celebrities just want to date and marry other celebrities because I believe that they don't want be with someone of a lower status. It might just ruin them or else they do it just to get more publicity. I absolutely love that JJ wants to marry a fan. At least he's thinking of his fans and how they feel towards him. Of course they know who he is and stuff cause he's so popular, but I also think that fans(real people not celebrities)have a more meaningful sense of life to them. Some or most of celebrities are fake and only think about material things. I wouldn't be surprised if JJ fell in love with a fan. He can then at least show his true self and feelings to that person. Oh, how I wished that was me, but you know, I am just a really big fan and he is just a fantasy. I would just like to meet him, get an autograph and pictures and a hug. I hope that someday it will come.

[color=#993399]I think it's rather SM, because if you see companies like JYP, GM where they represent Rain, Se7en, SG wannabe, Seeya, (and othe popular singers) etc, they never do lip-synching(even when they dance).

Although perfection is what Korean (& everyone) prefers, I can almost guarentee you that Koreans definetly want to hear live than lip-synching. One of the news-articles said, "People would rather hear off-key notes than hear lip=synching". I think that is one of the reasons why DBSK's been criticized so much. Overall, Mnet 2006 Award was a huge dissapointment for ALOT of people. People were saying how SM was monopolyzing the whole show. I mean Boa even came when she wasn't even nominated for anything. And singers (not from SM) didn't even come to the award when they were nominated in several categories.

There are also many music programs (ex: Yoon-do Hyun's Love Letter) in Korea that only allow singers to sing live. When you see the show, only A class singers get invited to these shows. DBSK's been to some of these shows too. Anyway, Korean singers won't get recognization if they can't sing live. I guess people feel lenient toward (dance) groups like DBSK, because they do have such rigorous dance movements. I personally don't think it's a good enough reason though because look at Rain and Se7en. However, I guess if you see DBSK's ballad and slow (non-dancing) songs, ithey are all live.




Yeah I really like those programs that allow singers to sing live only.
Mnet and SM do have scandal issues. I mean why didn't other companies' singers (who were nominated for alot of awards, while Boa (SM) came when she wasn't even nominated) come if this show is so prestigious and importnat??
Plus, Mnet is a cable channel, not alot of Koreans have it.

Off topic:
I really don't like some of the Korean music shows (ex: Inki Gayo) though. It's so extravagant with lighting that I can't even see DBSK. And what is up with the camera-angle? Why do they keep zooming in and out? All people care about is DBSK!!! Just focus at one spot! hehe.
And the Mnet's camera work for the award was sooo horrible! I got so dizzy!!

we cant be too hard on the boys for lip-synching. they choreograph really demanding dance routines & all. we wouldnt want them to collapse onstage would we?!

the reason why singers don't sing live is that when they do that often, it will tired out their throat and easily damage certain tissue in the throat causing them to sound different. Company request them to sing live certain times and lipsynce certain times. Its easier to sing ballad live then hiphop because of the loud music which can cause them distraction also they have to dance to it too and they will have to slow down the dance a bit when they sing live since their either holding a microphone or trying to make sure the fans can hear them if their wearing the headset. They also try to protect fans by lip syncing because of the loudness of the microphone and the music can cause damage toward the ears. the microphone has static so if you encounter that alot it will damage your ear tissues.

hope that explain to you why they often don't sing live especially durning hiphop songs.

Yes that makes sense, just sounded like SM doesn't ever want DBSK singing live...but I still don't understand why certain events don't allow celebrities to sing live. It makes sense if the individual performer (s) doesn't want to, but why restrict people?
