@ep 15.. beautiful moments by binnie/JO.. so touching.. the made up scene was so sweet and the bed scene was beautiful.. him leaving her doesn't make his pain any lesser haha.. but i'm still worried about his eyes though.. i creid and cried.. i'm hoping for a happy ending...

and after watching the drama, i think the critics are overly harsh on the main actress... she i think had to act more compared to HB... sigh... ah well... wish her all the the best...

Hyun Bin Receives Praises for His Natural Acting

“The World They They Live In” is a “self-contradicting” drama. Despite putting the focus of the drama on the glamorous entertainment industry, in the end we have to return to the beginning, to describe the life of the actors, producers and screenwriters whereby it is not that different from the common folks in reality. Hyun Bin who plays as PD Jung Ji Oh in the drama, has received praises for his “natural acting” and excellent portrayal of his ordinary yet unique role.

From his expressions, voices and actions, we can see that Hyun Bin successfully portrays an ordinary person. There is absolutely no sign of any “idol drama” in the making.

“If I wish to portray an ordinary Korean guy in his 20s-30s, then my character cannot be too prominent.”

When the reporter met Hyun Bin in the office on the 17 afternoon, he still look like an ordinary young adult.

He complained: “Whenever I receive the scripts, I would feel that its ‘game over’ for me. (laughs). I have to display different kind of feelings within a single sentence. And sometimes the lines doesn’t really fit into the atmosphere. For example, sometimes I have to drop my tears when making a rhetoric speech. I have to control the extent very carefully so as not to overdo or under-do it. Although I’m very tired now, but after I have finished the shooting, I can probably discover how much I have changed.”

During his career path, Hyun Bin is “lucky” to always gain the liking from writers renowned for their extraordinary literacy. First we have Im Jung Ok (Ireland), followed by Kim Do Woo (My Lovely Samsoon) and then Noh Hee Kyung. Hyun Bin said: “I was very stressed when filming ‘Ireland’ in the past. I got more and more tired and even till the extent of questioning myself ‘what am I doing here’.”

“My Lovely Samsoon”, with a viewership ratings of over 50% is the drama that sprung Hyun Bin to popularity. Hyun Bin wishes to be a “true actor” and not a “very popular artiste”. He said: “I know that I would probably never see that kind of ratings again. Although ‘The World They Live In’ is on the low side of 5%, but its alright.”

When asked about isn’t Kim Sun Ah the one who made “My Lovely Samsoon” popular, Hyun Bin laughed and replied: “Of course, the project belonged to ‘Kim Sam Soon’. If I had tried to surpass her and make more viewers like me, then I probably wouldn’t achieve such a good result.”

In “The World They Live In”, Hyun Bin and Song Hye Kyo play as a couple. He said: “Song Hye Kyo and I became close in a relatively short span compared to other projects. The reason is because we had kiss and hug scenes two to three times every episode. Whereas for the other dramas, they usually had only 2-3 episodes containing these scenes at the most.”

In response to the criticisms that Song Hye Kyo received on the internet, Hyun Bin said: “I totally couldn’t understand why she would be criticised. Nevertheless, this incident has definitely hurt Song Hye Kyo greatly, but she didn’t display it during shooting. Instead, she worked even harder and I’m very grateful towards her.”

Hyun Bin’s initial dream was to become a policeman but after entering the acting class and gradually influenced by the art of acting, he began his acting career during his varsity days. He didn’t enter the industry being spotted by star scouts on the street. In 2002, he passed the interview and shot for his maiden movie “Shower”. In that movie, he successfully portrayed a man who sold one of this eyes and spent all the money he had received from the sale.

Hyun Bin expressed: “I would like to attempt roles that I have never tried before. I don’t know how it would be like to have a split personality.”

Interviewer 1 (Lee Yoo Na): You have a bed scene in this drama. This is Song Hye-gyo’s and your first bed scene isn’t it?

Hyun Bin: I had to think how to climb up the stairs to the second floor and whether to show my underwear to Song when she took my blanket off. I just decided to cuddle her like a koala and climb the stairs, and show my underwear when the blanket is taken off. When she spanked my buttocks, the sound was so funny that we kept giggling and made a lot of NGs.

Interviewer 2 (Lee Jeong Yeon): Any NGs in kiss scenes?

HB: Not really. When we had the first kissing scene, the staff would watch it repeatedly but since we made more and more kiss scenes, they lost their interest in it. It makes me feel relieved.

I1: You must have gotten closer to Song, who is almost the same age as you. How do you call her?

HB: When shooting, we call each other ‘Joon Young’ and ‘Ji Oh’, which are our names in the drama. I thought it could take a long time to get along with her but we made love scenes in the beginning of the drama and we also had to stay together while shooting overseas, so there were a lot of chances to talk to each other. It didn’t take a long time to get closer to her.

I2: Other than the bed scene, there was also a shower scene. The drama seems to show more naked actors than actresses. Have you done any physical training to get fit?

HB: Right before this drama I played a psychopath in the movie ‘I am happy’ and I had to lose weight to look skinny. Since then I didn’t gain much weight. I could have tried to gain weight if I had more time after the movie. I play a director in this drama and they are normally not fit at all because their job is stressful.

I1: You indeed have a lot of love scenes with Song. Now they look really natural when watching the drama.

HB: We filmed a kiss scene today too. I don’t brush my teeth and get nervous anymore as I used to do before. Normally there are around three kiss scenes in the entire drama but in this drama there are at least one in each episode. But I think it reflects what real people would do in their life. I think people can show their affection anytime they want. It makes me happy when I see people saying ‘The drama makes me feel like having a girlfriend/boyfriend’ or ‘The drama reminds me of my ex’, after watching it.

I2: How about yourself? Do you think of your ex or want to have a girlfriend?

HB: Yes, I really wish I had a girlfriend but it’s ok now since Joon Young (Song’s name in the drama) satisfies me. I think it will take a bit of time to find a girlfriend. I will shoot another drama right after this one. I would like to get a girlfriend after that drama. I’m just thinking when will be a good time to get a girlfriend (laughs).

I1: Can you compare yourself with Ji Oh? About love?

HB: Quite similar, both of us are shy and quiet. I’m not talkative so sometimes I feel sorry for the person with me.

I2: This is your first drama in three years and the ratings have not been high so far. Are you disappointed?

HB: Not at all, I feel sorry for the staff but I don’t really care about the ratings. People can watch dramas with various ways such as re-air, internet downloads and mobile phones nowadays so I don’t have to be dissapointed if the numbers are not as good as ‘My name is Kim Sam Soon’.

I1: Have director Pyo or writer Noh asked for anything particular from you?

HB: Writer Noh wanted me to read lines faster. There are a lot of broadcasting jargons in my lines and she wanted me to read them flawlessly. She wanted me to portray the character as young and active. Director Pyo wanted my character to act slightly differently depending on who I’m acting with.

I2: Writer Noh said when she was writing the script, Ji Oh fascinated her the best.

HB: I’m sure that she’s not fascinated by Ji Oh anymore because I’ve heard that she is going to put in a scene where Ji Oh is “baptized” with cow faeces.

I1: Doesn’t it feel funny to play director? You are an actor.

HB: I used to think that it was an easy job because they just sit around and order others around. But that wasn’t it. They have a lot of tough job behind the scene. It is a fascinating job though. Their job is about creating things from nothing.

I2: Who would you like to work with if you were really a director?

HB: I’d work with the guys in my baseball team (Jang Dong Gun, Joo Jin Mo, Kim Seung Woo, Gong Yu, Ji Jin Hee). Action genre would suit them best. They are all cool guys so it will be quite fun.

I1: Would you cast yourself?

HB: I would, if the role is suitable.

I2: If you could start over, would you have chosen to be an actor or a director?

HB: I’d choose to be an actor after all. I haven’t thought about doing anything else.

KBS Best Couple by citizens in a ground survey conducted on the streets.





On the program “2008 KBS TV’s Most Memorable Scenes” aired on the 29th, Song Hye Kyo and Hyun Bin have been chosen as “KBS Best Couple” by viewers in a ground survey conducted on the streets.

According to the result, Song Hye Kyo and Hyun Bin won the “Best Couple” with an overwhelming number (just look at the number of red dots) of votes for their performance in “The World They live In”. Kang Ji Hwan and Sung Yuri of “Hong Gil Dong” were at a distant second place while Park Jae Jung and Im Yoon Ah got the third place for the popular “You Are My Destiny”.

The viewers were clear on their choices for the top 3 pairs. Song Hye Kyo and Hyun Bin were “closest to real life”, Kang Ji Hwan and Sung Yuri were “the most hilarious and interesting” and Park Jae Jung and Im Yoon Ah were “the most compatible”.

Apart from the “Best Couple”, the program also reviewed the best scenes that appeared in KBS programs for the year. The top 3 for the “Most Memorable Scenes” in respective order are 2008 Beijing Olympics, Shin Eun Kyung and Kim Hye Ja dropping their tears together (Angry Mom) and Yoon Ah and Jung Ae Ri hugging together, accepting Yoon Ah’s past (You Are My Destiny). “Women of the Sun” and “1 Night 2 Day” got the 4th and 5th place respectively.
