A special interview with HB
May 14th, HB has just returned to Korea, we had an exclusive interview with him in Seoul.
HB is very polite and enthusiastic when he's answering the question and talking about SQ.
We also talked about his personal life.

'I want to be an actor that is trusted by the audience'

'How are you?' He's just late but his face was filled with guilt and embarrassment when he appeared
at the venue for the interivew. My first impression of HB was:
he seems like DG leaping out of the TV screen.
His long bangs were covering up his eyes, the rare glimpses of his eyes peeking out was filled of charm
and his unique aura.
Also, his pretty face in combination with the growing beard, stirred up a wild and sexy magnetism.
At the first glance, he seemed distant and hard to approach, but on the contrary,
when he's talking about his past, he'll flash his genuine smile without a care,
and talked about it with excitement. This left a deep impression on me.

On the day of the photo shot, he loved the lilies of the valley that the editor
brought to the shot, he asked with an innocent child-like look, ' Can I take it back?'
It doesnt take any explanation to be charmed and under his natural spell when he's
this genuine and without pretentiousness.

[spoiler]Q: In the drama, 'mom's noodles is a very memorable element, what is sth that is

memorable to you in the drama?



Please tell us about how you worked on their differences when acting as TW and DG.



TW and DG of coz are one person, but in order to present their differences,

I focused on each of their personalities and portray from there.

TW is very pure and innocent, he likes math and is very naive.

He's a high schooler that can be found anywhere.

I think DG must have gone through a lot of hardships in that 8 years what went

by like a blank to him.

So, I have thought over it a lot, I've designated DG as a person who has been

through a lot of challenges and persevered through a lot of hardships,

he's more manly than TW, and even a more stately and grounded image.

DG is not the same from his days of innocence, he's been hurt from the inside,

he's tasted pain and suffereing. This is what I've noticed in their differences.



How were you when you're in high school?



I'm a very normal, regular high schooler. (smiles) I like to hang out with my friends,

playing soccer, basketball. I started actin in dramas in high school. That is very meaningful.

But I don't have much interest in my studies. (grins)



Are you good in math like TW?



I love earth sciences and geography that kind of subjects. My math is not good,

I don't like it that much. But since it's a required subject in college entrance exam,

I feverishly worked hard on it before the exam and I got some result.

I got high marks and got only 2 wrong in the exam. (grins)





I've heard the boxing scenes were very draining.



How do you spend your off days?



I'll go to the gym or practice with my baseball team. I lost wt for this drama,

so after the last shot, I didnt do any exercise for a while and didnt bother with my physique.

and eat a lot of food. I gained some wt. I'm planning to get back to exercising and get back my body.



What are things you like or what's your interest lately?



I've fallen for nintendo Wii. Of coz it's the boxing game (laughs)

Maybe I'm still not good at it, so I was really spent playing it with lots of movements.

I'll sweat up a storm. If I was playing with friends fr my management agency,

we'll be all sweating after a game, and we'll have to start taking off our clothes.

At the end, we'll just be wearing our boxers. (grins) But it's great fun.



What do you want to do the most now?



TW's dream is to be a white collar worker with a steady monthly income, what's your dream or goals?



My dreams, to a certain extent or definition, have already come true. Coz starting in high school,

I dreamt to be an actor. I should say, I'm working towards my dreams and goals in life step by step

and it's fulfilling itself in my own eyes. I have another goal now, it's to be a trustworthy actor to everyone.

I wished that no matter what roles I've picked up, you will think that it's something worth watching...

that kind of actor.



What do you think destined you to be an actor?



Acted in dramas in high school drama club formed a large part of this idea of me destined to be an actor.

My dream before that is to be a policeman. My family has always put a big emphasis on education, so

in the beginning I didn't get my parents' understanding and approval. After I had a good, serious talk with them.

they let me pursue a degree in acting in college as a compromise. I agreed too. From then on,

they have given me their full support.



Do you have people/actors you look up to?



In the past and at this moment, the people I look up to are my parents. There are a lot of seniors I respect or

I look upon as my role model. Like my hyungs in the baseball team...KSY, GY (I'm not sure about the names...)

....etcetc a lot of them. They are always by my side, I'm living in a very nurturing environment.



Is there a shot that you are most satisfied with in the drama?



I'm most satisfied with the shot when I was symbolically drinking with JK in front of his grave.

That is a shot that is very memorable to me. Then it's the drinking scene with SH. That is a difficult scene.

But that's also a scene that let me perform what I've always wanted to. Why are the scenes all associated

with drinking?! (grins)

The kissing scenes with Bora are also very unforgettable. Of coz there were many NGs, but if we nailed it

in one take isnt that very odd? (smiles)

In general, all the saddest scenes were all very memorable, in the last episode, the scene when Bora dies,

it's a very important scene for me too.



We were very impressed with that scene when you put back the disarrayed chess pieces.

How did you tackle that scene?



Since I have never played go before, so I divided up the blacks and whites and memorized it that way.

In order to not forget it, I started swiftly putting back the pieces as soon as the camera is rolling. (grins)

If I hesitated for a moment, I need to memorize it again, so I asked Mr. PD to shoot that earlier.

Because I have to act like a genuis, I watched 2 hollywood films with genuises as subjects.



You've mentioned before in your previous interviews, ' This is a very challenging drama.

This drama to you is like tackling a very complicated assignment.' Did you succeed in this challenge?

Are there any regrets?



Maybe I'm too egoistic, but I think I've succeeded. Of course I go through a lot of retrospection in all my projects.

Everytime I saw a broadcast, I will always feel that my acting is very embarrassing and there are a lot of

mistakes. More than half of the time, I'll be in sighs watching through the episode. But now, this kinda of

retrospection and regrets are getting less little by little. This is the hardest part and the most fascinating

part being an actor. But, no matter how much less it's going to get, every performance still warrant it's own

retrospection. (grins)



Did you change after this drama?



I've mentioned this before, this is a big challenge for me. From this point of view, I have got some results

and thus some self-confidence. I have showcased a difference side of me. I've said just now, I have done

some self-inspection, but I didnt have regrets. I have a feeling that I have made myself a foundation for

more changes and improvements to come. I have always been waiting for a role like DG.

If TW is a rich boy, I may not have taken up the role. (grins)



Please let us know more about the shooting in New Zealand, can you?



The weather is brutally cold, I will never wish to go through the shooting twice.

Also, in order to not worn out the dogs in the shoots, the crew always put the puppies first in priority.

My treatment was 'even less than dogs' literally. (laughs)

Oh, I also had an experience of being less than a dog. When I was still a newbie,

I was shooting with a dog flew in from another country on a CF. The dog is the grandson of

the dog that is in 'Mask' and his pay is higher than me as a newbie at that time. (grins)

Of course, how we're treated on the set is totally different too. (smiles)



Heard that once you've immersed yourself in a role, you can't easily step out of it in your daily life too.

Have you ridden yourself fr DG?



Other than the beard, I've seperated myself from DG. I never can get used to growing a beard before,

now, when I'm not working, I feel weird without the beard. so I've been keeping it. (smiles)

The role of DG has taught me a lot. Of coz, thro DG, I'm introduced to boxing for the first time.

Also I have learnt to control my emotions better.

When I'm shooting a serious or crying scene, I will immerse myself early on in the morning. That's

because I don't want to cry fake tears.



What do you think of a girl like Bora?



Totally disgusting. (grins) I think no matter how open-minded a guy is, she's very hard to accept.

But if there's a girl like her in my life, she'll be someone I want to observe. I want to see her

transformation. The Bora in the latter half, I think I can fall for. But if I have to make a choice at

the moment we met, it's a definite NO! But if it's anytime after that, if it's when her true-self has

undergone a transformation, I think I can accept it.



What is the type of girl you like?



It's better if she can understand my line of work.. (Bin is answering this question for the godzillions

time now...so...I'll just trans the part that's new)I like Nicole Kidman that type of lady. If we're talking about marriage, Kim? (dunno who..) or KDS,

my mom in SQ will be ideal. Teacher Koo is a veteran actress, she's really like my real mom,

I've learnt many precious lessons fr her.



Who do you resemble more in real life? samshik or DG?



Both have parts of my personalities. I haven't been in a lot of roles, all the characters I've portrayed

have bits of me in them. I can get angry quite easily like DG, I'm more like samshik concerning

relationships with the ladies. I've never been the strongly emotional/passionate type.

I've always been referred to by ppl around me as the 'young old man'.



What do you like to wear in real life? (again we've heard this tonnes of times)

.....casual....I like white, black and simple designs. My fav color is blue.



What went thro your mind when you were greeted by soo many fans when u arrived in Japan?



I was very shocked seeing all the fans for the very first time. There were more than 100 reporters

at the press con before the screening. It was not a big crowd and I was worryin will the

venue be empty? When I was at the stage, I saw that the hall was completely full, I was very moved.

That day was the Korean's parents day, I brought my parents with me for celebration, and they saw

the accolades of fans and were very happy for me....that became the best present for them.

I am truly grateful for my japanese fans for that.



Can you talk a bit about Ireland and MNIKSS?



I learnt how to cry in Ireland. I've mentioned a bit on this before, PD Kim is a very strict PD,

he required us to never shed a fake tear. MNIKSS promotes me to my next level. My partner,

Miss KSA taught me not to go by the script and memorized all the lines, coz there maybe

various changes that we need to go with the flow at the set and we have to be open for that.

So I deliberately didnt memorize the script and I thought that that's the right way to go.



Lastly, can you say something to your Japanese fans?



SQ is a very different drama from my previous works. If it'll be appreciated by more, and that

may lead to more appearances to meet up with you in Japan, nothing can be better than that.

It's my first visit here. I didn't quite like his role in My Lovely Kim Sam Soon but I know he is one hell of a good actor cos' he executes and delivers his part well. Still need to finish the last 2 chapters of MLKSS. Still wondering why he turns down the offer to be the lead in Foxy Lady, another MBC production where the plotline here may overlap his earlier work in MLKSS. A similiarity sort of. Guess he wants to shed off that image of being an older lady's close buddy, hope you know what I mean. In fact I am glad he decided to act in Snow Queen with a role that is definitely opposite his in MLKSS. HB has given himself a chance to enlarge and stretch his acting style and talent.

HB has matured in his look after my first encounter with him in MLKSS. He needs that unkempt, vagabond-look to assume and play out his role well in Snow Queen; I really enjoy the mysterious and slow moves of HB in SQ. I see HB on the other side of his acting. I thot it is really great. Versatility belongs to him, and could this be the reason why he choose to turn down the offer in Foxy Lady? To try another new role that demands a change in his acting skill and talents!

Regarding the interview about the unchanged and untransformed Bora who was a disgust to HB in Snow Queen, I really think that it was really those moments of being with the unrepentant Bora that I really feel for him cos' he was every word a gentleman towards her!!! The intense feelings of love and hatred were undeniably there, and those moments made SQ a tolerable and excellent watch!!!!

Somehow I just know that it will do well with Japanese audience cos' I'm familiar with their tastes of dramas and movies. If he gets a good welcome there, I won't be surprised!

To all those fans of HB, catch him act in SQ.

fox lady? was that another series after mnikss? coz after mnikss,Bin chose to change his management that's why we couldn't see him in MBC anymore. anywayz,according to Bin,his character in SQ is a big challenged for him. but to quote what he said: "mnikss promotes me to my next level." it meant that he learned a lot from that drama. he was so young but he managed to appear and act SamShik so well whom happens to be a 27 year old guy in that drama. that's bcoz he learned some tricks to make him look one. he was pressured at first but managed to gain what people has expected from him, that he can really act so he was thankful that he got SamShik in mnikss.
