Full Version: One new Jin Yong's adaptation after each decade?
AsianFanatics Forum > Entertainment Center > Hong Kong Entertainment
wingsiw
I hear somewhere that TVB will make a new adaptation of Jin Yong's novel every decade, true or not?

example:

Condor Hero 1983 => Condor Hero 1994 => Condor Hero 200?

Return of the Condor Hero 1983 => Return of the Condor Hero 1995 => 200?

Demi God Semi Devil 1982 => Demi God Semi Devil 1996 => ...

Duke of the Moutain Deer 1984 => Duke of the Moutain Deer 1998 => ...

Dragon Saber Heaven Sword 197? => Dragon Saber Heaven Sword 1986 => Dragon Saber Heaven Sword 2000

.....
whatevers
I doubt that will happen, since I heard Jin Yong banning TVB from making adaptations of his novels.
acjwho
why so? return of the condor heros 1980 was excellent, as was legend of the condor heros 1986. only the recent ones have been really bad.
wilson_bond
The best I've seen so far is DGSD 1997. It was brilliant. Felix Wong as Kiu Fong was fantastic smile.gif
summerly
There was also Crimson Sabre. But the latest version with Lan Ka Tong was not very good and TVB changed a lot of things from the novel.
keykey
actually TVB thinks the price of the copyrights are too much so they are buying wong yi novels after the success of ASITP

also Jin Yong likes the mainland china official tv station adoptations so much he charges them only $1 for each series
colourwolf
Guess Jin Yong likes the mainland stations cos their series follows more closely to his novels.
tvbx
i heard that Jin Yong is actually redoing some of the novels with different endings
colourwolf
I read that Jin Yong is rewriting parts of Condor heros. Think the name of the city that Guo Jing was defending was changed to more acurrately reflect history. something like that. sorry if I got it wrong.
penguin666
How about making the Condor Heroes trilogy into movies on the scale of Lord of the Rings.
Mythical
TVB has murdered each and every single Jin Yong book with each successive adaption. They change it to the point where it diverges way too much from the writings of Jin Yong. I agree with him when he decided to stop TVB from making adaptions of his novels.
Tumby_tum
Agreed!! Enought of the remake!!! The first ones were the best except for DGSD (the 1997 is the best!). I don't understand why TVB keeps re-producing them, it's so annoying!! You can't blame Jin Yong for banning TVB!!!
TVBboy2005
don't know why he likes the mainland stuff more.. i mean i saw a clip of DGSD from mainland and it looks so scary...

i agree that the 80's versions are the bests
Dim Sum
It use to be one Jin Yong's adaptation each decade but after TVB kept changing from the stories I think Jin Yong ban TVB from using his stories. I also do not understand why Jin Yong likes the mainland versions??? Have you seen them, they are as bad as TVB's recent ones. All I got to say is the 80's versions were the best. Another thing is I do not think TVB can find the caliber of actors and actresses to play the roles as good as the originals.

Having said that, I would not mind seeing another reproduction of Jin Yong's novels. I just love the Condor's trilogy and Duke of Mount Deer. I wish Jin Yong would have written a book that just talked about "Dugu Cau Bai" the guy with the awesome sword technique. That character is so mysterious in his novels, is he the best ever still needs to be answered.
neogeodude
I hope there are no more remakes. How many times can they tell the story. They should produce more Wu Xia series using comic books like Wind & Cloud, Hero, etc.
kakashi
I think it will never be as good as the old ones. every version they change the some of the storyline or mostly the end.
after so many versions. when there's 5-6 version of one title, you also have so much different endings. so it will lose it originality
orangebear
TVB is just killing themselves, changing w/e they feel like in JY's stories. THey deserve getting banned.
Alzarius
Well Jin Yong certainly has good reasons for not letting TVB adapt his novels if they're going to modify the content. However, for those of us who haven't read the books, we're not going to know what's different or not. The other big issue is that there aren't that many good actors/actresses these days to play the big roles.... who can we see playing Kwok Ching or Wong Yung nowadays. I can't see any new folks playing the part.
silver171
I can't get enough of Jin Yong series. Think they are the best stories ever written. They should continue to do re-makes for the next generation to watch. I first watch TVB '94 adapation of condor heroes. Then try to watch the 80s adaptation, the acting was good but hated the costumes and hair style. Don't think it age well. I can't even get my younger sister to watch a complete eps. I like all the china adaptation of Jin Yong series, just feel more up-to-date.
solipsis
i have seen almost every interpretation of the condor trilogy. singapore, mainland, tvb, and taiwan. every one of them had its merits and weaknesses, but in the end, i'd just go with the novels themselves, because they allow me to construct my own view of what transpired. i'd definitely try to translate some chapters.

It's true that Jin Yong was unhappy with what TVB did to Heavenly Sword and Dragon Sabre 2000. That's why he's collaborating with mainland producers now. Jin Yong told mingpao that he did not bother to watch any TVB adaptations of his novels made in the 90s.

not likely will happen but u never know...
i love all his works...

Hmm...I guess that must be why there have been so many mainland adaptations lately...Legend of the Condor Heroes starring Liu Yui Fei is coming out and she was just done with Tian Long Ba Bu in 2003. State of Divinity also came out around then as well, starring a mainland cast too. Didn't another version of Heavenly sword and dragon sabre come out of mainland too??? Gosh, Jin Rong is a literary genius!
AznCutie2
Jin Rong has banned TVB from remaking anymore of his series, cause they change the story too much and turn his valuable works into junk. Therefore, TVB can no longer remake any of his stories, however, I've heard he has given rights to mainland to do a remake, which is in process right now.

Hi all Jin Yong fan, i'm glad to talk with you, i'm a big big fan of his creation.
Yup Jin Yong alrealy changed his novel " legend of the condor hero" aka she diao ying xiong zhuang, because in the 1st version the mother of Yang Guo is not Mu Nian Ci, Yang Kang rape an other woman and make her pregnant. shock.gif
And the kung fu "1 yang zi"" is owned by the taoist Wang Zhong Yang, that is the probleme, because after LOCH Jin Yong wrote Demi God semi Devil, and in this novel "1 Yang Zi is the royal Duan familly's kung fu.
So Jin Yong re-wrote LOCh, and give "1 yang zi" to the south King, Nam De. In tVB adaptation (80's) it was based on the new novel, we can see Nam De cure Huang Rong with 1 yang zi.

Now Jin Yong re-write again Y Tian Tu Long Kei (heaven sword dragon sabre), because he finds that Zhou ZiRuo should'nt have such bad ending. I have read the new adataption, it's really better.

I'm fan of the TVB 80's adaptation, i find Barbara Yung is the best Huang Rong in LOCH, and Au Yeung Pui Shan is the best mature Huang Rong.
See in any new adaptation, all the actresses who play the mature Huang Rong can't do better then Pui Shan.

To My mind the best are:
DGSD 95:- Kiu Feng-Felix is the best!
Terry Fan-- the best Hui Juk (the monk)
Jay Lau--best Ah Zhu
Rain Lau--- Best Ah Zi
Ho Mei Tiang- the BEST zhong Ling, her costume is too nice, and her acting wow, she is so cute, very good job!
Bondy Chiu--> Best Mu Wang Qing

Best Wang Yu Yan--heheh Liu Yi Fei in DGSD 2000
Best Duan Yu- Jimmy Lin, but that all the costum aree horrible. Look at Zhong Ling, Mu Wang Qing, Thian Shan Tong Lao 's costume duh.gif My god it's an ancient serie??

I think for DGSD the 80's adaptation is the worst, because i hate Idy Chan as Wang Yu Yan, i hate Ken Tong as Duan Yu. I think the costume and theme song are great

LOCH'80s is the best of course lol,
Barabar Yung-- Best Huang Rong
Felix Wong -- Best Guo Jing (Julian Cheung is too handsome to play Guo Jin in LOCH 95)
Miu Kiu Wai- best Yang Kang (i love this devil character, because Miu Kiu Wai managed to do a great job!)
Sharon Yang-- Best Mu Nian Ci, i think she is prettier with her costume, Shui Ling 's costum is too simple, and the one who play the role in 95, is not pretty enough to play Mu Nian Ci.
Well for the other supporting role, ROCH 80's has the best cast 4ever! Patric Tse as Yang Kang 's father, Kenneth Tsang as Huang YaoShi infatuated.gif , Lau Dan as beggar Hong, and the big actor who play Lao Wang Tao Zhou Bo Tong

ROCH '80 is the best too, because ANDY lau is Yang Guo, so handsome!!
There were Au Yeung Pui Shan too as mature Huang Rong, Ryan Leung as mature Guo Jing
The best Xiao Long Nu is Carmen Lee in the 95, because Idy Chan as Xiao Long Nu i don't like so much, anyway she makes a great couple with Andy

HSDS 2000 is the best, but HSDS 80's has better song.

Best Wu Kei-- tony Leung (80's)
Best Zhao Ming-- Kitty Lai/ Gi Gi Lai i think the 2 actress did a great job! Ad they are so prety in their costume!

Alyssa can't play the charcater of Zhao Ming, because she is to nice.

Best Zhou Zi Ruo-- Charmaine Sheh (2000) because she makes me love her character that i didn't like in the 80's adaptation. Cao guan Guan did a great job too, so beautiful!

Best Cheung Shui Shan-- Simon Yam (80's) Damian Lau in the 2000's is too old

Best Yang so So-- Michelle Mei (2000), because i hate YSS played by DoDo cheng (80')

For the other character the version 2000 is the best! The costume of 2003 is too modern

ooh.. interesting. What is the new ending? I felt so bad for her character.. she started out so good..
athlon
the new ending for HSDS was that CMG is going to get all the girls I believe... Or better yet, none of the girls, but in the end he was thinking, hmm.. this is good, she is pretty, that other was also cute... etc.

So in the end he can't decide which one to chose.

Also, JY has rewritten Duke Of The Mount Deer so that Wai Siu Bo gets a really sad ending....
spazgal420
I hope he chooses ZZR in the end! Like "tis me" said, she was such a nice and caring girl in the beginning and in the 2002 version, she did change back to good in the end.

Where did you read about the changes athlonkmf?
Blogger
Yeah, Jin Yong has/is going to rewrite most of his novels. I reckon he should leave it as it is and let the fans debate any ambiguous parts.
sdjang84
I've heard that Jin Yong banned them from making the series as well. But honestly, I feel that the series from the '80's were the best for the novels. The ones before it lacked the technology, thus, making some of the martial arts look a tad bit fake. As for the ones afterwards...the actors and actresses just didn't give me the feeling of the characters from the book. - -;;;;...

Honestly, with Jin Yong and him rewriting the novels...I really feel that he should leave it be. - -;;;...It's already really, really good without him meddling with it (although he was the original author ^^||). I doubt he could make it better though. Even if he's trying to make everything historical correct.
carpediem
Honestly, I don't want JY to rewrite the ending for Duke of Mount Deer. I think it is good that Wai Siu Bo gets to be with all the girls because I hate it when in other series the other girls that love the hero just as much gets left behind. Yeah, I think that ZhouZiYurk should get to be with Cheung Mo Gei, but the other girls should also be a part of it too.

Talking about Duke of Mount Deer, I just finished the series and the book for the ??time. I have to say that TVB has change a lot (Tony/Andy version). I can imagine that JY don't like that. In greatline it's the same, but almost all the series have another ending or something in details are different.
Personally it's good that the series aren't exactly the same as the book. It's a bit boring if you watch the same story but with other actors (unless the time between remake is so long that you can't remember the old one). And some part of the book, you can't put it in the series.

Like Duke of Mount Deer, TVB has cut a whole part when Wai Siu Po went to Tung Hek Isle with his wifes. In the book he was years at the Isle and finally went to Taiwan for a couple of months. And than returned to Beijing and went to the border to attack the Russians. The ending was also different.

I can imagine that TVB didn't have the budget to make the part when he's attacting the Russians. But the ending from TVB was better than the book. The book just ends when WSP said that he wants to quit and going back to Yeung Chau. Thereafter there's a whole explanation of Hong Hey and the real history.

And I know JY already has changed something in his books, each time when the new print come out. But it will be sad if WSP is alone, the whole book/series was funny and it just can't have a sad ending.
carpediem
Yeah I agree, it wouldn't be right to end such a funny and good humoured story by singling out the hero.
Like the 200? version with Dicky Cheung, I was particular sad when the princess died without reason just a few minutes to the end of the series. Ruby Lin in it was so cute, not like the ones from the older versions, when they are just plain cruel.
I wish I can read the books, but my chinese reading and writing is very limited.
Can anyone tell me what are the titles of all of JinYong's books? Or have an english site for it?
Thanks!

I've found this for you (and the other JinYong fan's who can't read chinese)

Funny, my english isn't good enough, but I will take a look (I just found it by google)

Thanks for the links for JY's novel. !!! clapping.gif

Frankly, I think the re-make is a bad move.

Personally i like the first release and will always remember
Barbara - Huang Yung, Andy Lau - Yueng Guo, Felix Wong - Kok Jin

wherelse the re-make make me cringe especially at the work of
Athena Chu Yan (just plain irritating) and Louis Koo (too stone and still not to mention the fact pale) duh.gif
carpediem
Hi, I just want to say "Thanks!" for the link. I'm going to start with The ROCH first because I like that story the second most aside from Duke of Mount Deer.
Thanks again! worship.gif

well, taiwan production ruin his novels even worse like return of condor heroes star richie ren (my god, it was horrible, the storyline didn't seem to follow the books at all, and why does Little dragon girl wear black all the time, she also tan shock.gif ) and duke of mount deer (seriously, major changes). I think if jin yong ban tvb from make series from his novels, he should do the same thing to taiwan production

actually JY hasn't banned TVB, but he did ban Taiwan, and to be exact that Yeung Pan Pan or soemthing director who literally raped the JY-books by changing it so much. Made JY quite mad...

JY is really quite mad. According to this answer from him: (I'm doing my best to translate it)

您看見作品改編成連續劇、電影有什麼感想
What are you're feelings about the adaptation of your novels?

Y: I give the tv/movie producers the rights of my novels because I wanted that there will be more people knows my novels. Some people never read it before, but after watching the series/movies they are interested to read it. That's very good, but I never thought that the mister producers are changing my novels so much, after I watched it, it's was very hurting me. They put many things in the story and changed it that you can't recognise it. They also changed the characters, which I don't agree with it. If the story is too long, I can accept they change/cut a bit. But they change a lot and put another storyline in. If they think they can do it better than me, why they don't write another ancient novel by theirselves? Don't say that the original story is from myself, so many changes, it isn't my novel anymore. Maybe they think they are superior that they can rewrite/change JY's novel....
In the future I will beware of this kind of producers/directors when I give the rights again...

(maybe someone in better english/chinese can change my translation)

But in greatline, he don't like it. In almost all the adaptations of his novels are changes, some with more and some with less changes. But he don't speak that he banned some directors or tv-companies. But I can't find any date with this message, it could be a couple of years ago...

(didn't know he is really mad about this... blush.gif )
QuackieChau
Yeah...I'm kinda expecting some Jin Yong remakes from TVB sometime this decade, but it seems unlikely since mainland is already one step ahead of TVB and it's a little overkill to have 2 versions of each novel released around the same time.

Plus, TVB doesn't have anyone worthy enough to portray JY's characters. Then again, all the previous adaptations used new talent as well. Unfortunately, the newbies seem to be getting progressively untalented. Sadly, that means this generation won't have JY adaptations to watch. My parents adored the 80s adaptations, and while I watched those, I really grew up with the 90s adaptations and artists, so it's the 90s adaptations that are most dear to my heart despite the difference in quality.
kickasschick
Personally I loved Heavenly Sword Dragon Sabre 2002 (or whatever version the mainland chinese people did with Alec Su playing Wuji) but thats just me...I've never read any of his novels or seen any other HSDS so I really like it. The girl that plays Mei Mei is really smart and funny. I'm not sure how close it follows the book but the story line is really good.

I definitely agree with the other here about Semi Gods Demi Devils 1997 ver being the best. I'm currently watching the new mainland version of it and it just seems to be dragging.... Felix, Benny and co all did really well in the 97 ver, i was really impressed.

anyways, thats my 2 cents!
