Not sure if this topic was brought up before but...

Which Korean singers and actors do you think would be able to break into the US market successfully? And by successful I mean the billboard charts for singers and major non stereotypical roles on tv and movies for actors.

For Actors, I think it would be most important for them to be able to speak English well. I'd love to see Won Bin or SSH on the big screen! infatuated.gif

For Singers, I think Lee MinWoo. He's such a great entertainer and better looking than Se7en and Bi. If Se7en has Rich Harris as a producer, I'm sure he'll be ok, and I've heard the song with Bi and Omarion which sounds great. clapping.gif

Soo....What do you think?

well rain, se7en, boa (i think) r a pretty big hit in the US already....but i think soon, DBSK will be very successful in the US market...they're already a big hit in china and japan...pretty sure it will be widespread soon

USA is a big market, when you see Utada Hikaru ...

Singer : I'll Say Lee Hyori , she can make it !!
Actor: Who you want!! LOL
rache114
Singer: Se7en (cause he can speak english!! plus his voice is great!)
Actor: Jung Woo Sung (because he's a good actor...he was great in "A Moment to Remember"
Michelle.
I think Rain and Se7en have a good chance to be successful in the US market.
They are both very talented and can speak English pretty well.

Korean Top celebrity Jung Woo Sung may appear on Hollywood film, said the Associated Press on January 2nd of 2007 from Hong Kong.

The Associated Press revealed the news in the interview with the producer of this movie, Terence Chang. The news said this famous Korean movie star Jung Woo Sung may appear on Hollywood film titled 'The Battle of Red Cliff'.

"I wanted Jung Woo Sung to be on this movie and asked him for a consideration to be appeared in director John Woo¡¯s new film 'The Battle of Red Cliff'", said the producer Terence Chang.

In the movie 'The Battle of Red Cliff', Chow Yun Fat and Tony Leung Chiu Wai have been already chosen to be appeared.

Terence Chang also added that he's still negotiating with Jung Woo Sung. "I don't think he's read the script yet and nothing has been decided as of now" said Terence.

Chang also avoided all questions in details regarding Jung's role.

John Woo and Terence Chang will start filming the movie 'The Battle of Red Cliff' in the beginning of March, this year.

it's really hard to break in the US market.. even the singers from UK can't make it..

but i really hope DBSK can make it lor..
nocturne.
I'd actually like to see WonBin in a few english movies,
and even though he's starting to get a little old already (in my opinion),
I think Se7en would actually make it pretty big in the US.
Most of his music has a more hip hop/r&b sound,
which I personally think is more popular in the US.
ie. I think more people would prefer songs like La La La rather than songs like Balloons by DBSK

Have you heard his song with Omarion? It may have been pulled from youtube already since it was leaked to the public but his english has gotten pretty good!
Takashi
Obviously none of the singers, as for actors......pfff...if some piddly role comes up thats all they'd be likely to get.

Isn't Bi already successful in the US market? unsure.gif
Neway, I hope Se7en will be successful as well.
If DBSG ever encounters the US market, I'm pretty sure that they'll make a big hit as well wub.gif
DBSG fighting <3

I really think BoA could have a chance in the US. Her songs are catchy and she is very pretty. The difference between BoA and Utada (No offense), is that BoA actually has sex appeal and and many guys would love her. I think her dance songs would be a hit, too, plus her English isn't that bad.

I don't think Minwoo would be that big of a hit. As much as I like Minwoo, he's kinda short compared to other singers, and height is a big deal in Hollywood.

Not really. Most stars are short. Usher's only 5'9 and they say Minwoo is about 5'8.

I think Rain Bi is one of a few Korean singer who could be successful in US.
He was in Time magazines once n will do the second concert in some parts of US n being invited to perform at Asia Music Awards.

Soo....What do you think?

The names that jumps out to me is Seven as a singer entertainment, have you heard him sing in Eglish? much better than Rain. The next no other but Choi Soo Jong "Emperor Of The Sea" one of the best actor in Korea, he is versatile and sooo believable.

this is my honest opinion...I'm from the US and I have seen the US market first hand and it very DIFFICULT to break into the US market...especially when it comes to asian singers...

now asian actors/actresses it's opening up for them...so I believe it'll be an easier chance for an actor/actress...for them I'll say whoever can speak English fluently...lol...well nowadays it's okay if your English is sorta off...lol..but to pick I think Won Bin...because he did get some recognition for The Brotherhood of War...which I LOVE..I cried my eyes out from it...then my brothers watched it and after that they seem to have gotten closer..highly recommend for brothers & family to know to meaning of siblings love..how close the bond that siblings have for one another...oops sorry for going off topic...lol

Like I was saying for singers it's more harder...because we Americans when it comes to singers we have this image already...so it's really hard...now some asians singers are like US born...but if I had to bet on a korean singer that MIGHT have a chance to break into the US market scene I will have to say Se7en & Rain...Rain is already making "some" noises in the US scene..because Mtv actually did a special on him...and he was invited to the MTV Music Awards...so Rain is making some noises already...now Se7en hasn't really made some noises yet...it was rumored that he'll be featured in one of Amerie's songs (if you don't know Amerie is half African American half Korean American R&B singer...she's well known)...so that's like the only real noise that Se7en is making in the US scene..he did say he'll drop his first single soon but that's it....
So yeah if I were to pick I'll say Rain & Se7en....all other korean singers I don't think so...

but again it is tough to make it into the scene...examples A.B.C Jin he is still trying to blow up...& Coco Lee she was mentioned then fade away...so yeah..it is tough..
but I do hope success for Rain & Se7en...of course I'll support them...I'm waiting for Se7en's single already...lol

Se7en has great vocal and dancing abilities. He is my second favorite K-pop male artist after 1Tym. I really do want to see him break into the U.S. market. However after hearing his leaked song featuring Fabolous I was a bit disappointed. down.gif

The lyric is just too cheesy: "Come on over here...pick me up at the back of the club where we're poppin bottles..." And the sad thing is that this line gets repeated a lot to the point where it irritates me.
Also, Se7en's voice is too soft in this song that it doesn't show off his great vocals.
The good thing about the song though is that Se7en's English is quite clear the majority of the time.
I hope this isn't the song that Se7en will use to debut in America because if it is, I can't see him go too far with his career in the U.S. market.

love Bi, but he needs to improve his English skills in order to make it here. se7en, i don't know anything about him, so i can't say whether i think he'll make it in the U.S. market or not. as for DBSK, love 'em (well, i used to anyway), but they are NOT making it here. the pop boy band era has been over for a while now. and some of their songs like Balloons would be perceived as gay here rather than popular. trust me, this is coming from a yunho/dbsk fan

2PM kinda started their US debut but not much people knew about it, but i think if they go back they would be successful because dancing is pretty popular here in new york and definitley DBSK...because of their vocal abilities and dancing abilities..as for super junior i think its possible but not right now though..maybe in two years or so..

*shudders* If SM sends dbsk to US I think I would faint. I mean, I would be proud that dbsk is given the chance to break into the market, but US is a place where people think that the backstreet boys are gay and adam lambert looks feminine. They'll probably label dbsk an ugly girlband. And I dunno what they'll say about my dear jaejoong's looks (though I think he has the most perfect face in the world). Plus vocally, asian singers (with the exception of filipinas?) are still considered weak compared to caucasians.

Wouldn't want the boys to get hurt by criticism. :S

i think your right especially how they are always touching people many people will think they are gay...but music isn't as popular is it is in the US compare to Korea. but i really hope they will come to US one day
mikiheart
Female singer: Lee Hyori! Dunno why she hasn't debuted in the US yet.
Male singer: Bi Rain. He is just HAAWT.

For actor, I chose Kwon Sang Woo , and for actress, hottie Song Hye Kyo.
PeekabooLover
I really want DBSK to make it big in US but theyre music style might not really appeal since US is more into hiphop and Rnb. and if thats the case then im sure bigbang would make it with their high energy creative songs.

Boa is already promoting herself here, doing interviews and such in english.

well i kno rain has alredy debuted in america but not as a singer as a hollywood actor

I think Daniel Henney would do great in Hollywood since he's an English speaker. He had a role in X-Man Origins so hopefully that will only be the begining to a great start. I'd also like to see someone like Jang Dong Gun in Hollywood. As for singers, BoA has a good chance & so does Rain. The only problem with Korean singers is that if they want to try their success at the US Market, usually, they'd change their whole genre of music just to fit in to the other US artists. Hey, I wouldn't mind seeing 2PM in the states either XD

And as someone mentioned Utada Hikaru, she has a full English album & she's got an English song in the video game "Kingdom Hearts". If she can just get good promotion and be more exposed, I'm sure she could be successful too. Her English is fluent.

Their style, their songs their fashion fits to the US..
I believe they would success if YG was to send them over the US to debut.
Pranks To Kisses ISWAK
For Actors: Daniel Henney, Jung Ryu Won

For Singers: 2NE1 (their english & musical skills blow me away) Even Perez Hilton loves them!
I hope the Wonder Girls will do well in the US, they seem to be progressing well.
