Kim Bum has gone through a shocking transformation
Monday October 19, 2009 Korea

The Boys Over Flowers star will be in a movie called Emergency and has gone through a 180 degree image change. With half of his head in cornrows, rocking shiny blue jackets, and smokey eye-liner, Kim Bum is now officially bad ass. His role in the movie, a host, pleasing ladies every night.

The cornrow hair is often rocked by Korean R&B/hip hop singers these days, such as TOP and Taeyang from Big Bang and BoA. This style symbolizes the strong emotion of the person who wears it, and can make hip hop songs have a darker image. It is said that Kim Bum, who doesn't have a very "dark" style, captured this image very well in the movie, and many fans are waiting for it.

Emergency, directed by Park Jung Hoon, is to be a love story (I thought it was going be a gangster movie...) and is expected to be released this December.

Kim Bum to Star as a Male Host in New Film 'Emergency'

Korean actor Kim Bum is set to star in new film "Emergency" as a male host, according to a press release on Tuesday.

Kim will play an aspiring actor who works as a host at an upscale bar, dressed in fancy clothes and accessories while donning the cornrow hairstyle.

The movie, directed by Park Jeong-hoon, is about young love, pain and growing up.

The film also stars Korean actress Kim Byul, who appeared in TV series "Sang Doo, Let's Go To School" in 2003 and "Strongest Chil Woo" last year.

The 20-year-old actor, who debuted in 2006, rose to stardom after appearing in the hit TV series "Boys Over Flowers" earlier this year.

"Emergency" is set to open in Korea in early December.

(Source: Asiae )
Love. Music.

He is just 21 years old now. So it could be due to his youth, but Kim Bum is a young man with the face of a boy who never takes a break. Last year, he led the beginning of MBC TV series “East of Eden” and after spending the first half of 2009 working on KBS’ “Boys Over Flowers”, he finished filming “Emergency” and went straight to shooting SBS “Dream”, which aired starting July 27. His new name is Lee Jang-seok, a pickpocket-turned-combative sports fighter. In a world where twenty-something actors complain about the lack of good work and producers about the lack of good actors, Kim Bum is a rare young actor who continuously works hard on his career. What has this young man, the one with a shining smile and passionate eyes, been up to lately? 10Asia met for an up close and personal interview with Kim Bum at the press conference for “Dream” in July.

10: Do you feel different after doing “East of Eden” and “Boys Over Flowers”, in terms of your popularity, for instance?
Kim Bum (Kim): I actually don’t really know because I’m always engrossed in my work. But I’m grateful that fans in Japan and other Asian countries have shown so much support for “Boys Over Flowers”. And I feel that Korean fans have also become more active. The senior actors in “East of Eden” taught me a lot of things, and even till now, I call up director Kim Jin-man and the cinematography director to ask about things I want to know about acting. And I’ve become very close with the F4 brothers in “Boys” and Koo Hye-sun, who played Geum Jan-di, so we all got together for my birthday recently after wrapping up work early. I was disappointed that Kim Jun couldn’t join us because he was working in Japan.

10: You must have had a lot of jobs offered to you after “Boys”. Can you tell us the reason you chose to do “Dream”?
Kim: I actually had finished shooting “Emergency” in between the two dramas which I think is going to open around the Thanksgiving Chuseok holidays. “Dream” will be the first different role the public will see take on after playing So Yi-jeong in “Boys”. I keep getting great parts, and some people might worry that I’m doing too much too fast, but it’s not like that. I thought a lot about it before I chose to do it, and I tried to concentrate as hard as possible in a short period of time. First of all, I was attracted by the drama's portrayal of the world of professional athletes and sports agents. In fact, “Dream” is not so much a combative sports drama but a human story about one character meeting good people and how much he changes and grows through that experience.

10: Tell us about your character, Lee Jang-seok.
Kim: He has the nature of a fighter, but he is actually very soft-hearted and lonely. He grew up in poor family surroundings and his pickpocket father taught him how to pickpocket after making him quit middle school. He ended up going to a juvenile reformatory in place of his father, so he has a lot of wounds because of him. He is sick of his father, but he also longs for paternal love and so he acts tough in order to protect himself. He’s similar to the character So Yi-jeong in “Boys”, who looked dashing, cool and glamorous on the outside but also had complex family issues. Personally, I feel compassion for the two characters and there are aspects of them that I respect as an actor.

10: But this character is completely different from So Yi-jeong on the outside. (laugh)
Kim: Truthfully, I was pressured and worried that the fans who liked So Yi-jeong wouldn’t be able to relate to this character. But now I’m so into Lee Jang-seok's character that all I can think of is how to express this guy. An actor has to keep changing and not settle for one image, so I hope the viewers will be able to free themselves of the fantasy of “Boys” and see me as actor Kim Bum. I can’t live as So Yi-jeong of F4 forever, so I want to leave it as one of my great memories.

10: What kind of responses have you received about your transformation in “Dream”? (laugh)
Kim: I actually hadn't really been aware of it, but on my birthday, somebody told me that I seemed colder than I was when I did in “Boys”. I took it as meaning that I'm that much more into the character, so it was a good thing, but ‘colder’? Come on. (laugh)

10: The process of transforming must be interesting -- turning from a pickpocket to nightclub waiter and to a combative sports fighter.
Kim: After he does serves at a reformatory in place of his father, he comes out and looks for a job but he can’t find any because of his bad record. So he gets a job at a nightclub, gets caught up in a violent fight, and sports agent Na Jae-il (played by Joo Jin-mo) who was at the scene helps him debut as a combative sports fighter.

10: How did you prepare to play the role of a combative sports fighter?
Kim: I don’t have much time to learn these days because we are shooting all the time. I did learn the basics from a real combat sports fighter before going into shoot. But no matter how hard you practice, everything changes once you actually go into shoot so we just go with the flow. I haven’t filmed the fighting scene yet.

10: What’s the atmosphere like on set?
Kim: I was in shooting in Japan until dawn and came down here and I'll have to leave for Japan again tomorrow for a press conference. It’s a full schedule so everybody is tired, but Mr. Oh Dal-soo, who plays the father of my character, really livens up the set with his ad-libs. One time I was in a scene with my eyes closed and it was so funny just listening to his ad-libs that I started laughing and made a blooper. (laugh)

source 1

10: You've appeared in a pretty wide range of dramas since your debut. Was there a particular moment that was a turning point for you?
Kim: I appeared in “East of Eden” four times, from episode two to five, but that took over half a year to shoot. There was a jump time-wise between those episodes, but I lived as my character Lee Dong-chul for nearly seven months. My first appearance in episode two and my last in episode five, felt like they were different people, so that was particularly memorable. And especially when I was shooting my last scene, I had a hard time getting out of the character and I was worried about how I should choose my next role. I still have a lot of affection for Lee Dong-chul and I worked with really great senior actors, so I think I learned the most from that drama.

10: You didn't shoot that many scenes in “Eden”, but you succeeded in making a lasting impression in the beginning. You got rid of your cute image and played a very desperate-looking character. From your early years, you seem desperate and hard-working in whatever you do.
Kim: I’m enjoying myself quite a bit while working. Do I look too desperate? (laugh)

10: Where do you get such strength?
Kim: I really hate losing -- it’s in my nature. And more than anything, when I look at the eyes and actions of people who believe in me and support me -- like my family, fans and staff -- I can never do anything half-heartedly.

10: When one starts acting or enters the entertainment industry at a young age, they get stressed or get lost as time passes. How is it for you?
Kim: I don’t have time to get lost. (laugh) And I don’t want to get lost. I wouldn’t call it getting lost, and I do want to travel and enjoy school like other people my age. But I chose this life, so I think I have to get rid of the desire for freedom. I think it’s the only way. So far, I have never regretted it, not once.

10: Then what do you usually worry about?
Kim: Well, mostly about work. Is that too boring? (laugh) Especially for “Dream”, I was the last to join among the actors so I had the least time to prepare compared to others, and I had to concentrate as best I could the shortest time possible. So I worried a lot about that. These days I worrying about how I should get out of my previous character and into the character of Lee Jang-seok.

10: Last year, you enrolled in the Movie and Theater Department at Joongang University. Is it possible to lead a life as actor and student?
Kim: I think it is difficult to do two things together, so I’ve taken this semester off for now.

: Are there any dreams you want to achieve through “Dream”?
Kim: Just like an actor has people working hard for him behind the scenes, such as mangers or stylists, an athlete and a sports agent are also dependent on each other and inseparable. I hope the drama is able to show you well about how they overcome many obstacles together and gives the viewers a sense of dream and hope. And I have never won anything at award shows so it’s my personal wish that the drama “Dream”, not me, wins one. (laugh)

10: You’ve been working steadily as an actor. Is there anything you are interested in doing and wanted to do more of?
Kim: I want to try directing, if opportunity arises. I don’t want to do it just because I think I have the advantage as being an actor. It's my dream to prepare really hard and seriously for it and direct anything, such as an indie or movie or play. All my friends are acting majors, so I think it would be great to do one together.

Kim Bum in London
Wednesday October 28 Korea

The Boys Over Flowers star Kim Bum seems to be a very busy man these days. Shortly after leaving the Philippines to film an RC Cola Commercial with Maja Salvador, he flew to London, England.

A representative from Kim Bum's agency, King Kong Entertainment, stated that Kim Bum left for London, England on the 23rd and he's staying in London for 6 days to attend and participate in the 'Go Green Village' environmental protection activities. Because England is considered one of the leading countries in the area of protecting the environment, Kim Bum is studying and witnessing examples of what they're doing and also learn more about the policies. He will then go back and try to advocate these studies, examples, and policies in Korea.

It's good to see celebrities doing positive things like this. Some photos of Kim Bum's trip in London were uploaded to DC, you can check them out below. Thanks to DC and bumsso for sharing the photos.

Kim Bum Osen Interview

After working in the field on “Infinity Challenge”, Kim Bum’s back hurt for 3 days, and even moving was difficult. However he still said it was an enjoyable experience.

Even though Kim Bum shed the image of So Yi Jeong, he still maintained good friendships with the F4. Even when he was extremely busy, he would meet with them 4-5 times a month to talk about the difficulties in filming or in life. They would talk for at least an hour, and sometimes talk more than 3-4 hours at a time. They are his precious friends who give him strength in time of need.

The rest of the interview talked about the show Infinity Challenge and his upcoming movie Bisang. A lot of it we’ve heard before, so I’m not going to translate them. All the important and interesting parts are written above.

It’s really refreshing to know that they’re still good friends and talk frequently. Then I’m thinking, do they ever talk about So Eun? Or he met with her too, but of course he couldn’t say that in interviews

Kim Bum Visits Japan for Fan Meeting

Korean actor Kim Bum is in Japan this week for a fan meeting as well as to promote his first single album.

Kim will meet with some 1,500 fans at the NHK Hall in Osaka on Sunday, spending time with his Japanese fans for the first time in a year while also revealing his first-ever single, his agency King Kong Entertainment said on Saturday.

The album will contain several songs including the title song named "Eve's Sky" and the Japanese version of his song "On My Way to Meet You Now" from the soundtrack album "F4 Special Edition".

Also, a DVD will show video of Kim's album in the making and other video clips of the actor's transformation from an actor into an artist.

An official at Glory Entertainment, a Japanese agency which planned the event, said his fans continuously requested for the meeting after last they had last met with him at a meeting he held after the airing of TV series "East of Eden" in 2008," said an official at Glory Entertainment, a Japanese agency which planned the event.

After the fan meeting, Kim will travel to Tokyo to hold interviews with dozens of media companies.

The 20-year-old actor, who first gained popularity through MBC sitcom "High Kick" in 2006, shot to stardom early this year through KBS TV series "Boys Over Flowers" based on a 37-volume Japanese comic series.

Kim Bum Newsen Interview 09-1109

When asked if he dreams about having an innocent love like the 21 year old youth in the movie, Kim Bum stiffly answered that because of his busy schedule he doesn’t even have time to see his mother.

Next Kim Bum was asked if he had any female celebrities he liked especially, and Kim Bum said, “I don’t have any. For this type of dangerous confession, if something goes wrong, bad things will happen” and waved his hand.

Part 1:

The man who would do anything for his love, “more beautiful than flowers” – Kim Bum – returns as the “unstoppable man”. In the upcoming film Bisang (to be released December 3rd), Kim Bum transforms into a man who died protecting his first love Su Kyeong (Kim Byul).

Kim Bum recently came back from England, and he commented on the chilly weather, “I heard that England has gotten cold, but Korea seems colder.” While being childish he still showed his cool side, and earned the nickname “Witty Bum”.

“Right after the ending party for ‘Dream’, I flew over to the Philippines. After that I worked on releasing my single album, shot the poster for Dream, and shot commercials that were scheduled… Recently I went to England for environmentalist activities, but I also shot posters for the movie’s concept. I just came back but for the next 4 days I have 20 interviews.”

In reality, the young actor Kim Bum, who left refreshing impressions on people, already has 5 years of experience under his belt.

Kim Bum debuted in 2005 on KBS’s “Survival Star Audition.” It wasn’t a drama or movie debut, but because it was a “live broadcasting”, it was very special.

“In reality, even before deciding to enter the entertainment industry, I had auditioned but didn’t make the cut. Therefore when KBS was having the auditions I worked really hard. I really didn’t expect much. I failed when I had a 1/10 or 1/5 chance, but for KBS it was 1 in 30,000, so I didn’t think I would make it.”

However Kim Bum’s first appearance on television was in 2007 on the sitcom “Unstoppable High Kick”, playing as Lee Min Ho (Kim Hye Sung)’s close friend.

“A lot of people asked me about my relationship with Park Min Young, but since I was playing Kim Hye Sung’s close friend, he left a deeper impression on me. All the hug scenes and jealous scenes were with Kim Hye Sung. It wasn’t that type of concept from the beginning and it was merely rare adlibs, but it made the director and audience laugh a lot so in the end it became like that.”

In reality there are a lot of big stars who starred in the same productions as Kim Bum. The most recent costar is Son Dam Bi, who was in tvN’s “STAR, Become the New Employee!” and SBS’s “Dream”. Another costar is Wonder Girls’ So Hee, who acted as his girlfriend in “I Like It Hot”.

“When I was acting with So Hee in ‘I Like It Hot’, it wasn’t too long after my debut so I didn’t feel burdened, but after the movie premiered, Wonder Girls became the generation’s idols that people shouldn’t be too close to [because of protective fans], so on the stage and movie premieres I was very careful . (Laughs)”

Even so there were a lot of reactions from the fans.

“Even though I can laugh about it now, but back when my Cyworld Minihompi was attacked, I was really scared. Being attacked by unknown people was very scary. But looking back, it was probably better for a male like me to get attacked than a female.”

All throughout the interview Kim Bum answered with a smile, but now switched to more of a serious tone. He especially stressed the masculinity of the movie Bisang. Because it’s both a melodrama and action film, he feels very burdened. Kim Bum answered all the questions that weren’t difficult with a smile.

“It’s a shame that while filming, time was always tight. I worried about my character, which was natural, but because I started a new project right after finishing one, I felt like I was losing myself.”

However, even in that state he still gave it his all.

“The amazing thing is, once I’m immersed in that project my worries are gone. I must change myself completely to be in character. Aside from only thinking this way, I also need to wear clothes that fit with this character. I think people will have different opinions about my character. The clothes I wear will just be clothes that the character wear for a while and show other people, but my role is making the clothes match with my character…”

Kim Bum will be acting as the “host” in this story. Kim Bum said he couldn’t reveal a lot about his character.

“Shi Bum is like a lot of people my age. Even though he’s only in high school, he has a cheerful personality. The difference between us is that he goes to audition because he aspires to be an actor, he doesn’t have parents, and have financial difficulties. Because he meets Su Kyeong, his life is changed. Even though he has a lot of scars, because he has decided to protect Su Kyeong, he returns to the host bar.”

“Because I didn’t have experience [as a host], it was not an easy task. However if the actors only do things they have done before, then people can’t shoot movies [on anything]. So compared to the people who shoot historical dramas it was a lot easier.”

Because of this movie, Kim Bum got injured. While high school student Park Shi Bum was fighting, Kim Bum was doing a stunt where he was kicking, and got injured because of that. “Even so, having experienced this was very fun.” Kim Bum revealed that, at that time, there was danger of getting knocked out or breaking his nose.

Having felt the great love from his fans, he’s so busy to a point that he doesn’t have any time. Therefore for him, what kind of emotion is “love”?

“I think love is like how Shi Bum feels in the movie. ‘Even if I get injured I will love, and I will wait.’ And personally it’s the only thing that can change my daily routines.”

When asked if he dreams about having an innocent love like the 21 year old youth in the movie, Kim Bum stiffly answered that because of his busy schedule he doesn’t even have time to see his mother.

“In “Boys Over Flowers”, I established my role as the playboy So Yi Jeong, but compared to that character I’m more like the innocent Shi Bum.”

As “The 2nd ‘Beat’” [Korean action movie], Bisang, which describes the passionate love between two young adults, garnered a lot of anticipation from movie fans. What kind of colors will the boy-turned-man Kim Bum show us in this movie? This has caught the attention of many.

Bisang will premiere on December 3rd.

Part 2:

Kim Bum, who made the audience burst out in laughter as “Boardinghouse Bum” returned as “Harvest Bum”.

“Yesterday (November 2nd) I came back and saw the broadcast [Infinity Challenge] and thought it was interesting. I went to filming without knowing anything. Did you see? I changed my hairstyle…”

On October 31st’s broadcast of “Infinity Challenge”, Kim Bum was a guest star on the “Harvesting Part”, and received the nickname as “Harvest Bum”. Because of this, Kim Bum thought it was a very enjoyable experience, and there was a glow on his face.

“(When I went to the filming location) I started to feel nervous. I really didn’t know. I just knew I was going on “Infinity Challenge” but didn’t know what I had to do. A long time ago I called (Jung) Jun Ha hyung and told him to buy me food so I went to greet him, and then I went… in reality, as you know, I am Yoo Jae Seok hyung’s fan. (Laughs) Usually I am given these events but because I am a fan of “Infinity Challenge”, I felt proud to be able to become a guest, so I was very happy.

In this broadcast Kim Bum had a passionate scene with Kara’s (famous butt dance) Goo Hara. When asked whether he knew Kara he answered with a laugh.

“In reality I knew them. While filming for ‘Boys Over Flowers’, Kim Hyun Joong’s company brought food once or twice. At that time they weren’t the Kara like we know now. One day seeing them they became the Kara we know now.”

Next Kim Bum was asked if he had any female celebrities he liked especially, and Kim Bum said, “I don’t have any. For this type of dangerous confession, if something goes wrong, bad things will happen” and waved his hand. It’s been five years since his debut, but Kim Bum has not done anything in the variety department. Kim Bum was asked if there was a specific reason, and he answered very seriously.

“In reality, recently there aren’t a lot of chances for variety, and I don’t have time to act in dramas, movies, and variety. In other words, I must focus on my main work. This year I had three projects, and compared to others, I didn’t even have time to rest. Coming on “Infinity Challenge” was a rare thing and it was burden-free so I accepted. If I do variety, what would I do… It seems like I am an entertainer without a suitable variety to go on.”

However without “skills”, the shy Kim Bum released his first single album in Japan.

“I finished recording for “I’m Going To Meet Her Now” and 2 new Japanese songs. Only releasing the single in Japan, the fans in Korea might be disappointed, but this is only for fan service. I don’t have any plans to become a singer.”

Kim Bum, whose determination for acting differs from other actors, was asked whether he had a role model in the entertainment industry, which he answered shyly.

“Before I debuted I didn’t worship a lot of celebrities. The extent of my knowledge was: a singer is someone who sings, and an actor is someone who acts. At that time the only celebrity I liked was Jo In Sung sunbae. By chance we met privately and ate together. I bought 10 tickets to the movie ‘Frozen Flower’. If we have a chance to work together in the future, it would be my pleasure. For foreign actors I like Al Pacino. I think I’ve seen all of his movies that I can find in Korea

Also Kim Bum recently went overseas to introduce that country’s culture and learn about the environmental procedures, and he also shot posters for the movie’s concept. Therefore, he stated that there would be a travel log to be published.

“This is my first time going to Europe and I liked it a lot. I had many good memories.”

After “Unstoppable High Kick”, “East of Eden”, and “Boys Over Flowers”, Kim Bum’s schedule became very busy. However he seems a little down when asked about the recent drama “Dream”.

“‘Dream’ means a lot to me. When ‘Dream’ started, there were a lot of questions about whether it was too quick to jump into a new project. The actors, staff, and director I worked together tried really hard, but the low ratings were such a shame. If I had to do it over again, I would choose to do the same. If I can’t go on with it, then I would regret it. Even though deciding on this project came very quickly, I never regretted it.”

When asked about the upcoming movie “Bisang”, Kim Bum showed a special expression.

“When I was deciding on projects, I decided on ‘Bisang’ first. The filming for ‘Bisang’ ended first… Even though I was less busy filming for a movie than filming a drama, we were a little short on time filming for ‘Bisang’, which was a shame. A week after I finished filming for ‘Boys Over Flowers’ I started filming for ‘Bisang’. However while filming for “Boys Over Flowers’ I have already decided to film ‘Bisang’. The script for ‘Bisang’ is very good.”

In this movie Kim Bum acted as Shi Bum, a host, and he acted very passionately. He expressed the sufferings in a host’s life, with a lonely look in his eyes and without any fantasies about love. However, in order to protect his first love Su Kyeong (Kim Byul), he will transform into someone who protects her at the cost of his life.

At the end Kim Bum expressed, “I’m very thankful that my fans have given me so much care and love. You guys have given me so much but it seems like I haven’t give you anything. I will work harder in return. It seems that I have a lot of overseas activities for the remainder of the year, and although it’s a shame, please continue to support me next year.”

Ahhh, I was really obsessed with him when he was in BBF. He and So Eun make such a CUTE couple. I would be happy if they hooked up. But I have to say, his drama Dream was pretty boring and lame.....I loved the topless scenes, but the plotline needed some spice.

Kim Bum Channels His Inner BoA?

For Kim Bum's latest movie, Emergency, Kim Bum was spotted with half a head full of cornrows - which looks quite similar to something BoA sported earlier this year!

Two new pictures of Kim Bum in his latest movie, Emergency, has caused a recent swarm of interest amongst Netizens. In the photos, Kim Bum is shown daunting "half-cornrows." Netizens have been busy talking about these pictures, saying that they looked almost exactly like what BoA had daunted earlier this year at the San Francisco Pride Festival in California.

Emergency is a film about an aspiring actor who currently is working at a local nightclub as a host. Throughout the "youth action movie," it was described that Kim Bum has to risk everything he has to protect the woman that he loves.
