Lai entered TVB in 1983 as a clerk in the business department. In 1985, he gave up the job and trained in the TVB Acting School. He starred in a few series in 1989. He started out in some minor roles, and took on some more significant roles later on.

He also appeared in two ATV series.

Lai played a variety of roles and is liked by a lot of Hong Kong viewers.

i agree with you! i am rewatching him in Journey to the West and he is definitely a great actor, too bad he doesnst really have a MAIN role to play.

I think I'm happy that he's a supporting actor and getting credit for being a great SUPPORTING actor. Sometimes, actors or actresses aren't meant to be leading and are meant to be supporting. I feel that as a supporting actor or actress you get many more diverse roles and many for difficult roles than a leading actor or actress (in TVB.) Which is what makes the SUCCESSFUL supporting actors and actresses such wonderful actors and actresses.

Wayne Lai caught my attention with his role as Ho Fei Fan in Anti-Crime Squad. He played an old school cheap cop opposite Louisa So (who is also a successful SUPPORTING actress) and they definitely stole the show away from Ng Ngai Cheung and Maggie Siu.

Wayne Lai, Evergreen Mak, Louisa So, Rain Lau are meant to be supporting actors and actresses. Even Michael Tse, who is now leading, is mean to be a supporting actor.

Look at Fantasy Hotel, if it weren't Michael Tao and Wayne Lai, would the series have been successful? No. It worked because these 2 men knew how to act and these 2 men are meant to be their respective leading and supporting actors.

I absolutely love Wayne. He's a great actor and is awesome in both comedy and drama. He is so underrated. He deserves to get an award but has never got one. He's one of the better actors at TVB and would watch any series he is in. I watched Best Bet just for him. Loved him in there even if he is considered a villian. He was the only thing worth watching, IMO.

He is a great actor in comedy and drama! I like him!

wayne is one of d best supporting actors around. many times he has shone brightly even though he's not d main actor...other times he even outshines d main character. d latest drama i watched was devil's disciples n he was really funny in there....his acting abilities r top notch. even in other shows like when rules turn loose, gentle crackdown n safe guards, he portrayed his roles very well.

yeah, i think he is absolutely fabulous actor. So far, he had done well for all his roles...
but sad dat the is getting the attention which i think he deserved or m i wrong?

Tsung Man is extremely clever & resourceful. From young he aspired to become a good official. Later, he was engaged by Tse Chong Tin (Ha Yu) to become Wong Sheung's (Steven Ma) advisor.

Tsung Man predicts with great accuracy & is also a good speaker.
Wong Sheung (Steven Ma) felt lucky to have this outstanding assistant by his side and

I never realized how well his acting is!! i really love his acting in The Gentle Crackdown... especially the parts where he had to pretend to his brother and like threatening the other judges... SO GOOD... TVB never really gave him a chance, just because he's not as good looking as some other actors... its such a shame he can't have other bigger roles. But I'll support him from now... looking forward in HOG2.. but it'll be minor character most likely considering how the characters in it.

New series - Wives & Concubines, Wayne's first lead role

Last year the seniors Ha Yu, and Lei Sze Kei’s series HOG II was very popular amongst the audience. This year they have filmed a sequel hoping it can be as successful as the first one. After finishing preparing HOG II, in July there are plans to start filming a new series Wives & Concubines (妻 妾 成 群 temporary title translation). There will be a total of 25 episodes. The current cast is Sheren Tang, Kara Hui, Kiki Sheung, Tse Suet Sum & Elliott Ngok Wah. Wayne Lai will be the male lead for the first time.

Wives & Concubines will be directed by Mr Li (李 添 勝) and will be scripted by Mr Cheung(張華標) who wrote Heart of Greed. This series will be like the mainland production "大宅門". Elliot Ngok Wah will die early in the series so all his business’ will be run by his 4th wife Sharon Tang, and first wife Tse Suet Sum, Second wife Kiki Sheung and third wife Kara Hui will fight for the business.
Also, Ron Ng will play Kara Hui’s son and Suki Tsui will play a younger sister. Both will have a relationship with one another in a society which denies a relationship between a sister and brother.

Wayne Lai and Sheren Tang will film a TVB version of the mainland production "大宅門". This series was split in to two series, with a total of 72 episodes. This took the script writer Mr Kwok 40 years to develop with other directors with over 100 people in the cast.

大宅門 talks about how a family owns a pharmacy, and has been passed on from 3 generations. The first series is set in the Qing dynasty in the time of the Japanese war much. The second series talked about how the family fought against the Japanese and changed the whole family. (sorry if the translation isn’t very accurate).

In the new series Suki Tsui will have a relationship denied by society with Ron Ng.

Vivien Yeo does not mind having kissing scenes; Shirley Yeung will become an energy saving bulb.

Rumoured couple Vivien Yeo and Eric Suen attended the new series costume fitting for “新網中人“ yesterday. Shirley Yeung, Sonija Kwok and Wayne Lai were also present. It’s the first time the rumoured couple will be working together. In the series Shirley Yeung will be in the love circle but Vivien Yeo will play the 3rd person.

Vivien explains that she doesn’t feel awkward about playing this type of role. “ The rumours are not real but I’m just worried that people will have misunderstandings. (Will you have any kissing scenes with Eric Suen?) “It’s normal to have these types of scenes when playing the 3rd person. I don’t mind if there are kissing scenes. I previously worked with Bosco Wong but I felt very comfortable with the limits TVB set. Eric Suen who will act in a TVB series for the first time admits that the rumours could be used for promotion. “I think everyone would like to have kissing scenes".

Shirley Yeung also joked about being in-between the rumoured couple “ While filming I will become an energy Saving bulb but at the right moment I will turn dark”.
Sonija Kwok and Wayne Lai will have constant quarrels in the series but will become an couple in the end.

TVB’s new series “新網中人” (The remake of "The Good, The Bad And The Ugly") held a praying ceremony yesterday. The cast who attended were Wayne Lai, Eric Suen, Sonija Kwok, Shirley Yeung and Vivien Yeo. Lead role Wayne Lai who is favoured by producer Miu Siu Ching arranged kissing scenes especially for him and Sonija Kwok.
Wayne expressed that he felt Sonija had gained a lot of experience in the field and had matured as a person. He had also seen a big improvement in her acting. Yesterday they both filmed an arguing scene. The Producer had asked Wayne to discuss matters about the kissing scenes with his wife. But Wayne explains that his wife is very supportive about his acting. She will not complain but if she does it’s mainly because she feels his acting is poor.

Due to Sonija’s character in the series, she had to learn to make clay handicrafts. Yesterday she took some tools with her to the filming location. “I really enjoy making clay handicrafts, I will carry on after dinner and watching TV". Her handicraft teacher Griselda Yeung (Tavia Yeung’s sister) also complimented on her work.

Ha Yu has waited for 40 years for his dream to come true

The 41st TVB Anniversay Award Ceremony was at last shown on TV. TVB veteran Hu Yu and Michelle Yim took the TV King and Queen title. Thanks to "Monlight Resonance" There were no surprises as they were the hot favorites to win. In the run up of the race, Ha Yu has to compete with Raymond Lam (on screen son) .When the result was announced for the best actor award, Ha Yu was in tears. 63 year old Ha Yu has been in the entrertainment industry for 40 years. He said "I have waited for 40 years. I did a lot of movies and TV series. At last I have achieved what I have always wanted. I need to thank "uncle 6" (Sir Run Run Shaw). He has been my boss since I started my acting life.

Ha YU mentioned about his disappointment last year. He locked himself at home for 2 days after the ceremony. He felt he might have a chance since he is still working for TVB. He hoped this is his beginning but not the end. He suddenly spoke in Mandarin, (Sa aunty's golden phrase) You say I can make it, I will make it. You say I won't make it, than I won't make it. I thank everyone who tells me I can make it. Ha Ha Ha." Ha Yu was wondering how come Raymond has so much gossip around him. He said Raymond is a very good guy. Asked if he can now breath better now, he replied he has always been breathing very well.

Michelle Yim was trying to holding back her tears when she received her award. although Hung Aunty (紅姨) is said to be a super woman, she wouldn't want to be seen crying, there were few drops of tears. Michelle gave a speech saying she never dreamed that her role as Hung aunty would result her being the most hated woman in 2008. He even asked the doctors and nurses to upport her. Asked if she would announce her wedding is going to get married now that she got her award, Michelle smiled saying Wan Lo had proposed to her several times, but they haven't got any plan to get married yet. Asked if she get another proposal tonight from him, what would the answer be? Michelle replied " It's about time too." Michelle would be visiting him later on in the evening.

The Best Supporting Actor Award went to Wayne Lai. When it was announced, everybody clapped and cheered for him. Tavia beats Lee Heung Kam to take the Best Supporting Actress Award. When she told the audience Kam Jei should be taking the award, she had earned a lot of cheers too. Louse Lee got the "Most Favourte Actress Award". She disclosed that she told TVB that she wanted to pull out of the race because she was under a lot of stress. But TVB had refused her request and let her continue to be in the race.

Somebody is happy and somebody is sad. Raymond was not looking too happy when he took the TVB.com Award and even when he got his second award :the "Most Favourite Actor Award", he wasn't exactly over the moon. He expressed that he was not too disappointed. He had two awards already and he will work even harder.

Yes! About time Wayne gets something! I'm so happy for him, he totally deserves the best supporting award. From the time he acted as the pig in Journey to the West to the righteous official in The Gentle Crackdown 2, he practically outshines everyone when onscreen.

Yea Wayne is definitely a versatile actor. I was really happy to find out he's going to be leading in not ONE, but TWO upcoming series, next year. One with Sonija and one with Sheren. It was so touching when they called him up for the award. He got a standing ovation from all the other actors and actresses. That definitely shows how much respect they all have for him and his top notch acting skills over the years. Finally!!

TVB held a meeting and has decided to ride on their fame and will release 'Pages Of Treasure' & 'Salt Traders', hoping to grab more ratings. (The Greatness Of A Hero is cancelled, it was supposed to air after WESFOSW)

TVB's award ceremony has ended and all award winners are well-deserved. Wayne Lai received the most applause when he won 'Best Supporting Actor', finally got his breakthrough.

Cancelling/Postponing 'The Greatness Of A Hero'

Not only had TVB organised Wayne Lai to attend Stephen Chan's interview programme, they had postponed 'The Greatness Of A Hero' (supposed to air after WESFOSW) for Best Supporting Actor Wayne Lai's 'Pages Of Treasures' and Best Supporting Actress Tavia Yeung's 'Salt Traders' to be aired on the golden timeslot 8.30pm. From sources, this is a decision made by TVB's executives' meeting. They have a good feeling on Wayne & Tavia's current situation and are hoping to grab more ratings with their popularity.

Because of Tavia's popularity, she will have at least 2 dramas next year. She will be participating in 'Palace Scheme', and will be with pitting up her acting chops with Michelle Yim, Susanna Kwan, Moses Chan, Christine Ng, Kevin Cheng & Charmaine Sheh. However, she will be taking on the 'villian role' this time and will be scheming against best friend Charmaine Sheh. It's still unknown whether she can create a popular villian like Michelle Yim's. As for Wayne Lai who finally got his breakthrough, after 'Pages Of Treasures', he will be promoted and become one of the main actors with his drama 'Red Powder Merchant' with Sheren Tang.

Award winning artistes may not get re-contract with TVB

Despite Hong Kong's Television Broadcasts Limited assurance that artistes will not be affected in their recent retrenchment exercise, the Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor of the year, Ha Yu, Michelle Yim and Wayne Lai are still implicated. According to reports, TVB has halted their re-contract discussions. On the other hand, Linda Chung, Bosco Wong and Lee Heung Kam are the lucky ones who have secured their re-contracts and increment before the economy looms.

Lai is first to admit that the artiste management department has expressed their wish to postpone discussion of his re-contract. "This is not unusual and I will not be unhappy. I've been in this line for so long, I should have hit a wage ceiling. And my award has brought me extra income; I will be performing in Vancouver this New Year!" he reveals.

Yim appears optimistic and encouraging. "The company does not want this to happen either; they have no choice. Employees may be suffering but companies have their policies as well. Those retrenched should not be discouraged; they are professionals and I'm sure the company will rehire them when opportunity arises. As for myself, I still have one entire year of contract with TVB," she says.

Chung, who secured a re-contract before the downturn, is glad to get an increment too. "When I went back to office today, I realized many make up artists and hairstylists have received the retrenchment letter. I have known for four years and I'm really upset about this. Lets hope the crisis will be over soon," she says.

Wong, who just returned to Hong Kong from Toronto, is unsure of the retrenchment that is happening. "I have recently re-contracted for another two to three years and also got some increment. Retrenchment is a company's policy; I'm not in any position to comment. All I know is that I just lost one-third of my assets," he says.

I love Wayne's acting...He's mostly funny in all his roles..best if he is a kungfu master..like in DD he was just great with Bosco...i think roles in like 'Fantasy Hotel' doesnt suit him so much. Overall a great actor.

I think Wayne Lai is a great actor who has worked very hard to get to where he is today. He was not promoted by tvb and for him to finally take the lead... he must have worked extremely hard.
I thought he was hilarious in the Monkey King where he played the pig. then noticed him a gain in Gentle Crackdown. he just made the character shine and stole the series.
Also, he can sing! i had no idea. i watched "ju mei mei" (not sure about spelling) concert where she sang all the oldies and Wayne Lai was one of her guest. He was great there!

Wayne Lai has been in the entertainment industry for 23 years, earlier at the TVB awards ceremony, he finally received the "Best Supporting Actor" award. Wayne frankly said that he didn't feel complacent when he won, he was gratified when his colleagues stood up and clapped for him, he felt this was their approval for his many years of hard work. Also he was most touched by what Li Sze Kei said to him.

Since Wayne started acting, his acting skill has won approval from many people and he has accumulated a group of devoted fans. However, he admitted that this award hasn't yet brought him much increase in income. In "Pages of Treasure Click" that is currently airing, Wayne plays the leading role for the first time. He mentioned that throughout his career he has never cared whether he was playing lead or supporting role. He said: "Actually I didn't have any expectations or delusions of getting an award. I am only an actor, making a living, I do this for myself, it's nothing great. But when I received the award and everyone clapped I was very touched. Li Sze Kei said to me: "You really deserve this award, you worked hard for it!" At that particular moment, I really felt like crying, it made my mouth tremble when I was giving my acceptance speech."

When asked if he felt this award came too late? Wayne frankly said: "I think it came at the right time, even if I had won Best Supporting for "Moonlight Resonance", I probably wouldn't be so happy. Because "The Gentle Crackdown II" is not like "Moonlight Resonance", it's not a grand production, to have achieved this result is an accomplishment. I had to play two characters in the series, it was very hard and difficult, and therefore I am very happy to win an award for this series."

In the industry for over 20 years, Wayne has still managed to maintain motivation and drive, this is because he loves to act and likes to deviate from reality. He said: "I love too much to break away from the reality world, I never like to take my cell phone with me when filming, an actor's skill is determined by his ability to express and control emotions. Especially before my son was born, reality world to me had not much meaning. I didn't have high aims, goals nor wished to be rich. (What about now?) Now I am more practical, because I have my son to think about." About finally earning the title of male lead in "Pages of Treasure Click", Wayne frankly said he hasn't felt much pressure. As for ratings, he said he doesn't have much expectation, the only thing he cares about is not to let his fans, friends and colleagues who have supported him be disappointed.
