Full Version: A world where we dont need money.

This idea came from reading the replies to the question 'is money the root to all evil'

OK, money is at the moment something we all need and want more of. But will the day ever come when humanity ditches the idea of money ( in all forms ) and live in a world without it. Imagine, a world where we all are equal and there is no longer this need, this lust for money and to get more of it!

This idea also came from watching a rerun of 'Star Trek - the next generation' - the one where they find frozen 20th people, thaws them out, one is a stockdealer who wants a phone to find how much money he now has and the interest acquired, only to be told money doesnt exist anymore. Everybody just works in harmony and has no need for money, that concept is long dead.

You say 'blah, Star Trek' that'll never come. But then a lot of ideas from scriptwriters for that show has turned out to be true. Take for example, their communicators - now mobliles, their scanners, we now scan in hospitals and for security. But then that's all technology.

Will man ever evolve to such a point where the concept of money disappears and there is no longer any need for it in this world.

Or am I just dreaming out loud?

not in our lifetimes, if ever.

science & technology that "come true" look at HG Wells or Jules Verne, but they're ideas were based on the possibilities of of current scientific research at the time & also served as an inspirator to later scientists.

so technological advances are different from ideological advances. & living in a world without economic considerations would, in my mind, be a major ideological advance.

i don't see how it could ever come into being - before money, we had a bartar/trade economy, but even that was based on economics - who has what, who wants what & how much can A get for B.

even in Star Treck there were the have & have-nots, if not terms of money, then in terms of trade, supply & demand.

i honestly don't believe that humanity would be able to exist without economic considerations, there will always be people without something they either need or want & other people will to exchange that for something they value. i think it is simply hardwired into our brains.

how would the world really work? i couldn't even imagine it.

i don't think it is an evolution that we will ever make.

To me i wouldn't want it like that...

Money is stablity, it defines fairness and most importantly it is the main source of most human goals...

Stability - is for humanity, without money there is no stability cause i can't believe that "everyone being equal" could exist.

Fairness - is for people who get the money, its fair that if ur rich u should get better things then poor people...

Whether they deal drugs or work hard...

Human goals - We work hard in school and uni (some do some don't) to find a job suitable for us so we can earn a living.

Who would work when they get everything? Out of good will? Is the world that good? - If the government said every week u get 2000 dollars...how many people would work...

Money can be bad, but its also good...A world without money, i find that impossible...Unless its near the end of the world.

I guess in the beginnin - there was no money or a form of money...must've been some differences or arguments along the way that someone or people all over the world thought we need a form of money so exchanging and purchasing can be done without battles.

Eg. Animals don't have money, Lions for example - they purchase their meat by hunting...now for a family of lions the stronger male takes down the meat...BUT if other lions are present the stronger one takes it tongue.gif

well if the time comes i see it as a world that the strong are the power...and the weak just die...We will become primitive and everything will fall. I don't see equality at all.

Ah, but the question I'm asking is humanity able to evolve to such a degree where we can accept a world without money. Where we are all equal and there is no place for money in our lives.
At the moment money rules our lives, you get the rich getting richer and the poor trying to get rich or suffering. Will the concept of money rule our lives forever or can we get rid of this.

sounds like a communist utopia. as much as i love the concept - it is an ideal that cannot truly function in reality.

humanity is capable of acts of true greatness - of compassion, generosity, self-sacrifice & heroism, all the qualitites needed to create the utopia you've described, but most of us can only manage it in short bursts & not for the extended long-term needed to sustain such an existence.

for the most part - we are selfish, lazy & self-absorbed creatures.

some people will always want more than they have, need or could ever use. some people will always find something to be jealous of & to covet from others. some people will slack & others will grow resentful. some groups will splinter over the most petty of differences. the list could go on & on forever.

humanity has NEVER been united under one single banner . . . ever.

we are too competitive by nature, always have been & always will i think.

again, i think it's hardw-wired into our brains on a level that we will never be able to evolve away from. if we were, i think it would be the end of humanity & the beginnings of a new species.

I just dont agreed a world without money are good instead it will bring to dull life styles and there wont be any cruelty at all. How can this be? Life has to be cruel and dont think that human whom live happily are better.

No, that won't ever happen. EVER. The world was once a place where we didn't need money, money was non existance. So much has changed since then as we can all see. It's a nice thought really but people have become so selfish that there's really no point in asking. Sure there is people out there that are trying to make a world a better place. How do they do that? With money of course. A majority of the world's problems need to solved with money.

We humans have become greedy for money. Many of you would read this sentence and automatically think "No, i'm not greedy for money" Then answer the next few questions. Answer yes to any of these shows you are greedy.

1. When the next good movie comes out, you ask your parents for money or you work to earn the money or use the allowance received from government?

2. A good friend's birthday is coming and you have to get them a pressie. Do you not ask parents for money or work for money or use the allowance received from government?

3. When it comes to New Years and it's the time when people are giving out redpockets. You start counting how many relatives you have and be on your best behaviour just to get a red pocket?

4. You work to get more money or you want to find a job to get more money?

Everyone is greedy for money but everyone has a different degree of greedyness. It was would nice if we all could be less greedy. Though money has brought alot of problems but it has built the world it is today. From technology to fashion to science. We wouldn't here be today discussing this without those changes.

Money is an illusion, yet there are so much people who think it really means something.

And no, money is not root of all evil, but root of most evil we see happening today.

there were society that tried to incorporate such a concept. We know of them today as communism.

if you think money is an illusion, go w/o it for a while. I think you might change your mind.

umm . . . well, the large traditional communist countries - USSE, PRC & N. Korea may call themselves communist, but they really aren't, lol.

the only societies i've ever heard of that absolutelyu shunned all use of money, existed on a barter, work or communal economy is anarcho-communism collectives, of which there have been many, actually, but few of them surviving for the long term.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_anarc...70s_to_1690s.29

is a list of quite a few, most of them, aren't particularly famous. the best modern-day version, i can think is the Israeli Kibbutz movement.

but then what will you use to trade there are bound to people who can't create something and are willing to trade if there is no set currency wouldn't people just steal i think money is crucial many people like to create a utopian society where everything is perfect personally i don't think this type of society exists
Ingman
If men have total free access to everything they desire, and can fullfill every need they have without going through some systems that involve people and interaction with people. Then... even then it's impossible, since we still need something to provide these satisfactions.

Communism almost cease to exist. I can't imagine a world without money. Unless we are willing to go back to trade sheeps.. but currency would be so much more convenient, then always walking with sheeps around me.

One thing is that this topic is not so original since there were many people who have tried to implement such styles of societies.

One example would be in how communism tries to bridge the gap and eliminate classes of people which would theoretically bring us very close to the non-requirement of money. The problem that arises from such a concept is that human nature always wants something for nothing. So, this failure causes 2 scenarios.

- People stop trying to improve and progress to being lazy because there is no longer value to anything and everyone can afford to get the same material.
- The people in power will eventually become corrupted since they control the distribution of the materials.
tingtinng
i doubt it...cuz everything is soo advanced now..and it costs alot cuz of the materials...so i realli doubt it...but then it be kinda bad to trade things like before we did...wat if the one person doesnt have anything to trade with..or maybe their stuff suxs...if its free...den that'd be a big prob..so i realli dont think it'll come to that day

I'm assuming you mean fiat money. As long as resources are limited, money will always exist. Barter is too inefficient.
lenn
Return to Jurassik era and u will not use money ! Seriously it will never happened cuz all things at a cost , are valuable (for the point of view of human being)
