Jessica Hsuan as Wah Ching Yuk Age: 24 to 37 years old (1994 – 2007) Education: Bachelor in Accounting, University of Toronto Occupation: Finance department manager, Automobile designer Personality: Filial, solemn, attractive, intelligent and beautiful. Gentle appearance and understanding others. Meticulous in work and a good daughter in the eyes of her parent. In love, she is extremely stubborn.
Yuk is Man Hang's eldest daughter, and is extremely filial to parent. From young, she is obedient, clever, exceptional in conduct and academic, multi talented, the one that never disobey her parents' teaching, or do anything that crossed the line. In Man Hang's eyes, she is the most obedient child and doesn't need him to worry about.
After graduating from university, though she was interested in design, but in order not to oppose Man Hang's wishes, she joined the steel processing factory and was appointed the manager of account department, becoming colleague with Ngai Wing Piew. Seeing that Piew does his best for Wah family but doesn't receive recognition from Man Hang, Yuk sympathize with Piew, often encourages him. However, Piew misunderstand her action and thought that Yuk likes him. To avoid being hounded by Piew, she frankly told him that she is in love with another person - Wai Lun.
Hidden Text:
Lun is Yuk's design teacher. They share the same interest and soon developed feelings for each other. However, Lun is actually married and he hid this from Yuk for quite some time. In the end, Lun forsake Yuk and returned to his wife, causing Yuk to be heartbroken. At the time when Yuk was feeling sad, Piew was always by her side, making Yuk feel touched. Finally, she started to have feelings for Piew and they become lovers.
Due to this incident, Man Hang realized that he have neglected Yuk for all these years. Not only he allows Yuk to work in design field that she likes, he is determined to protect his daughter, not letting her hurt again. Man Hang found out that Yuk was dating Piew and strongly opposed to it. Actually, because Piew doesn't receive recognition from Man Hang, he is no longer the loyal servant to Wah family, but the enemy who harbors resentment against Man Hang. Yuk is torn between love and family.
Yuk originally planned to painfully let go, but she couldn't and decided to get married with Piew. Man Hang was powerless, but understood that Yuk is an adult and no longer the little girl who follow her parent's command. He broadmindedly let go of his guard against Piew, allowing Yuk to pursue her own happiness. However, Piew's greedy ambition was not satisfied even after getting Yuk, but instead plots to swallow Wah's family empire. Under Piew's constant manipulation, Wah family member falls into danger one by one, and Wah family eventually split up. Yuk doesn't know this and firmly believed Piew's loyalty to her and Wah family. She continuously shields Piew from menace. Until one day, Yuk found out about Piew's evil conduct and suffered a big blow. However, Yuk loves Piew, not only she did not expose him, she also get pregnant with Piew's baby in order to persuade him to repent. Unfortunately, nothing can move Piew as he was consumed by riches and fame. He sees Yuk's intention as betrayal and becomes worse. Seeing that Wah family is going to be destroyed, she hardened her heart and tearfully exposed Piew's criminal evidence. However, in her heart, Yuk and her daughter awaits the return of Piew…

i don't like that she is pairing up with joe ma. since this is her last drama with tvb they should at least give her a new face or try somehting new. ex: micheal from dicey business. or maybe a younger man would be better off than jo. i just think she had no chemisrty or no love passion with jo!

I think Jessica did pretty well in this show bcuz I watched this show mainly for her, but I have to agree with tweetty, I dont really like her with Joe, I would rather her with Michael. Anyway Jessica's potrayal of a demure and gentle woman is quite successful and I think she is very cute.

Happy to see her again after DB! She was Ray's sister. Definitely no problem in her acting! She was a gentle, considerate & caring character in this series. She helped her father to run his business even though her interest was "Design"! She was very loyal to her family & a good daughter who always listened to what his father told her to do! [spoiler] Her love relationship was not going on very smoothly. She was torn between Michael Wong & Joe! They both loved her but she was so confused & didn't know who she was going to choose ? [/spoiler]

It's been a while since Jess has played the soft and weak characters ...i mean also characters that will sacrifice so much for love. From reading this it kind of reminds me of her character from "cold blood warm heart". I am sure Jess will play her role very well as she always does!

they should be Spoiler warnings for the first post. The little bit of background on her character is fine, but the rest about her relationships should be hidden.

This was definitely a change for Jessica and I'm glad she took on this role. I thought she played it well and at times even better than the usual typecasted roles she's played in recent years. The character Wah Ching Yu (as well as pretty much the entire main cast and even supporting cast) was developed and written very nicely and her subplot with Joe I thought was quite touching.
Though this was somewhat and could have been a typical daddy's girl role, I thought she really brought out that something special in this character, that 'x' factor that made it special...

I love her acting and appearance.. but after watching Dicey Business and 1/3 through The Drive Of Life I can positively say that she cannot cry. That's why she make those weird sounds when she tries to cry. But no the less she is still a great actress.

she's too nice and innocent compare to the previous roles she played... it's so hard to see her like this. i am used to seeing her being strong and independent... but i like her nonetheless....
can't wait to see more of her... i think she looks pretty good for her age... i think she has pretty big eyes...

i think they made a mistake with the ages of her and raymond cause like jessica is suppose to be older so in 2007 she shouldnt be 37 if raymond is 40 in 2007 and in 1994 she is 24 and he is 27 it doesnt make sense.
im up to 30 and i find her to be too fragile and count on men too much and forgive them too easily. like her first bf went with his wife and she went to beg him to come back to her when she knew he chose his wife. then now with joe ma he betrayed their family twice and she still takes him back. she is so weak and guilible i dont like her character.

I agree with you LovestCarmen. Her character is rather weak and gullible. I'm actually annoyed with her forbidden relationship with Joe Ma. He's just someone that cannot be trusted.

Jessica is not one of my fav actresses. however iv noticed a difference in her character here and its rather likeable. Usually jessica plays the serious type with a profession. Also she is the type that usually thinks about herself and wants her own way. here she became an accountant for her dad. also in terms of relationships she wud let go if she was dumped. in here she just wudnt give up. not as strong as her other characters. like in golden faith she wud just break up with Gallen and in drive of life she needed the guy to make it really clear that he prefers his wife. however Jessica doesnt really have a lot of screen time in this series and u dont realy c herccharacter develop straightaway. still its nice to have a change.

I love jessica in DOL. Even though she can be stupid at times (getting back with joe ma ) i still like how she cares about her family heaps. Great acting as well...you can tell shes very proffesional and portrays her emotions very well. She also looks really pretty!!

^^ Totally agree with above. I love Jessica's character and she does look very pretty in here, much younger than her years. I was surprised that she could pull off such a weak and gulliable character. I've always been up and down with Jessica. I didn't like her at all in some of her older drama series e.g. Cold Blood Warm Heart, Eternity, DIF 4, Golden Faith. Wasn't fond of her portrayal of strong, professional characters at all. However, I did like her very much in Match Made & Heaven, Old Time Buddy and Dicey Business (PARTICULARLY the latter. I loved her playing the gambling addict in that. She was so funny and cute). Back to Wah Ching Yu, she can be a pitiful, sometimes pathetic character but Jessica plays her flawlessly and you can't help but like this sweet and gentle character. She's actually my favourite character in here along with Sheren Tang's. They both did a really good job and look really good, even on HD TV!

I definately agree with ♥luvergal♥ and WilyMinx. I've always liked watching Jessica in series..but for the past few years I was getting tired of her doing the SAME ROLES, independent career-minded woman who ALWAYS speaks her mind and was selfish. But she really has turned it around..first with Dicey Business and completely turned it around with DOL.
I never expected Jessica of all ppl who would be playing a character who was weak and who would give up everything for love BUT SHE DOES IT WELL. She was still willing to be with Michael even after finding out he was married..as for her & Joe, I feel like it's half weakness listening to Joe but also she does love him. This is someone that has been by her side for years. I'm actually starting to forget the characters Jessica used to play. It's nice for her to play Ching Yu..I like watching Ching Yu, someone who loves her family very very much!

I've been a big fan of Jess after watching her in Old Time Buddy and DIF4! Actually, I do like to see her in those career-women kind of roles... I agree that Jess is playing a completely different kind of character in here when compared to her past series. She did a good job as someone's who is emotionally weak in love and trusted people rather too easily, but then I loved the relationship with her family, especially with her father(Damien).

Personally, I really like Jessica as an actress, she acts really well, even in her older shows, but I really don't like some of her characters, in some of her older shows, she acts as a really loud and annoying girl, I didn't like those, I like the professional roles, but I got tired of seeing her in those roles after a while. I also loved her character in Dicey Business, it was totally different. In DOL, I really, really hate her character, her weakness and naivety drives me insane. But like others have said, it is refreshing to see Jessica take on a role like this, her acting is great.

It's kind of sad that she's doing a drama a year...But I do admire her being brave enough to take a backseat during the peak of her career. She's an amazing person!
Although I'm happy that she's acting in such a major production, it'll be even better if she could take a central role..
