9/17/04 – On 9/16, Song Seung Hun sent a letter to Korean news media admitting that he broke the law of the compulsory military service. MBC, which is the broadcasting TV station of the drama “Sad Sonata”, states that it is difficult for an actor to attend a drama once he is recognized to be suspicious.

A representative of the production company “Kim Jong Hak Production” states that the company will hold a press conference announcing its official position after it grasps the accurate situation. In spite of its prudent attitude, Kim Jong Hak Production has eliminated one of the lead actors (Han Jae Suk) from the cast of the drama “God of Sea” due to his evading military service years ago. Even the production company won’t take SSH out of the drama, SSH must report to military service once the fact of his evading military service is confirmed and he passes physical examination.

In his letter to news media, SSH states, “If I need to go to military service now, I’ll go. I’ll accept the arrangement of my country.” To this news, his fans comment, “Under the situation that the appeal time is over, SSH still has the courage to confess his mistake of breaking law. As long as he follows the nation’s call, he will be forgiven.”

Song Seung-heon returning home for investigation; 2 other actors admit violating law

Following an admission that he had evaded military service, popular actor Song Seung-heon was scheduled to return to Seoul yesterday from Sydney, Australia to face the music. Song said he will immediately turn himself in for military duty.

Song was one of three actors who admitted dodging the draft as a result of an extensive government probe that began in July, looking into the records of 19,000 men who failed to qualify for military service.

The other two actors, well known Han Jae-seok and Jang Hyuk, voluntarily appeared at the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency office on Jongno, central Seoul, Sunday, for further investigation. They admitted violating the law.

The investigation is expected to advance to a new stage now, as the two actors have identified a broker who helped them fail their physical exams.



Han and Jang each admitted paying the broker between 20 million and 30 million won.

Police cannot prosecute the two actors because the statute of limitations for their draft evasion has expired, so the two were turned over to the Military Manpower Administration and are expected to be inducted after new physical exams.

But an employee at a local hospital said that actor Han was been seen visiting the hospital, reportedly for kidney problems, so the outlook for his physical exam may be in question.

Song, meanwhile, had admitted his crime last Thursday in a letter he sent to Yonhap News from Sydney, where he was filming a music video for the MBC TV drama, "A Sad Love Song."

In the letter, he apologized for his actions and said that he deeply regretted them. "Joining the army meant putting a stop to my acting career for more than two years. I was afraid this would permanently end my career. I was foolish. I am so sorry to disappoint my fans and all those people who cared about me," he said.

With a production cost of more than 76 billion won, and top stars Kim Hee-seon, Gwon Sang-wu and Song playing the lead characters, the drama "A Sad Love Song" was expected to be popular overseas as well as domestically. The series had been slated to begin in January, but filming has now stopped because of the revelations about Song's draft dodging.

The admissions have generated widespread discussion, especially on Internet chat sites. On the site paran.com, many people said that due to the importance of the drama, Song should be allowed to delay his military duties until filming is finished. Others, however, heatedly disagreed. "Why should Song be forgiven just because he's a famous actor? He should discharge his duties right away," one discussant said.

At first, actors Han and Jang denied that the broker was related to the entertainment companies they work with, but they later admitted being introduced to the broker by company officials. Both said that they knew nothing of other celebrities or entertainment company officials being related to the matter.

An entertainment company staff member said the actors would be unlikely to reveal more than they had to.

"These people paid money and took the risk of getting caught because they cared so much for their careers," he said. "When they come back after serving the army, they are going to need 'big' people to pull them into the world of entertainment again. They can't say much more because they can't afford to get on the bad side of these people."

It's understood that there are a number of "brokers" who help people evade military service, he said. "Once an actor makes his mind up, it's quite easy to contact these brokers, whether personally or through entertainment officials."

The broker reportedly had invented a new strategy to disqualify men during their physical examinations by adding blood to their urine. Military Manpower Administration officials have said in the past that it is getting harder to catch these acts.

Internet user "askhim24" said on the Paran Website, "More ways of dodging military duties will be invented. That's why I think it would be best to find a way for celebrities to feel less burdened about leaving their careers."

"But men who dodged their duties should still be punished heavily in order to set an example for future soldiers," he added.

Police, meanwhile, are concentrating on arresting the broker whom the two actors identified. The names of additional draft dodgers may be revealed after police get ahold of the broker and his list of clients, a police officer said.

It's Mid Autumn festive holidays in Korea this week. News reported that SSH's case will be dealt with after the holidays, probably around 30 Oct when the holidays are over.

There was a thread posted on the Taiwan fans site. The author is currently studying in Korea and a vivid fan of SSH. She has taken time off from studies to gather some info in Korea....

Accordingly to some Korean fans, since returning to Korea SSH has been well taken care of by his parents. He has cheer up much and is all ready to report to the army once the issue is finalised. Last Fri he met up with the company staff to discuss various issues. No final decision about his role in the drama.

On the Japan DVD production, he will not be asked to compensate. The production company has other alternatives for the DVD completion. (NB: Japan SSH fans are preparing a petition on SSH’s DVD).

On other contracts, Himart did demand compensation from his company and has since removed his advertisement. However, In-to-In has not appeared to react negatively.

Lastly on Sad Sonata contract, if SSH is to discontinue his acting in the drama, GM Production will have to make hefty compensations (though SSH’s obligation was not known). GM Production really need him to be in the drama, but SSH put his priority on military’s decision.

Views from the Koreans, they mentioned that celebraties will be treated differently in the army. They will not stay together with the rest and they might be asked to act in army documentaries.

Currently the Korean guys felt that SSH should serve the army immediately so as to reduce pressures from public accusation. But most Korean girls hope that SSH will finish the drama before serving army. The current public opinion is getting more positive. The overseas support for SSH has made some impact.

From the military’s perspective, it is almost certain that SSH will report to army without further delay. The military service has not made exceptions before and will not do so now nor in the future. SSH should have knew his situation, which has made his recent message sounds like a departing note.

In light of Song Seung Huen's recent military cop-out debacle, two more Korean actors admitted to lying about their health to escape military service. Jang Hyuk and Han Jae Suk, accompanied by their attorneys, reported to a police station in Soeul yesterday, where they were interrogated for about an hour. Song Seung Hun (28) is invited by Tiger Woods (29) to attend the “PGA Tour Dunlop Phoenix Tournament (PGA투어 던롭 피닉스 토너먼트)” held in Japan on 11/17. Tiger’s mother became a fan of SSH after she watched the drama “Autumn Tale” and she asks Tiger to invite SSH to this event so that she could meet SSH. This invitation was recently delivered to SSH’s agency by officials of NHK and Fuji TV which will broadcast the tournament. Tiger Woods plans to give SSH a golf club as a present and SSH will give Tiger his photo book and the music video of “Sad Sonata” in return. SSH, Kim Hee Sun, and Kwon Sang Woo are scheduled to film the 25-minutes music video of the drama “Sad Sonata” in Sydney, Australia from 9/9 to 9/25.

It was a big turnout by the news media. The cinema was flooded by news media and it is the biggest turnout I’ve ever seen at a drama briefing. Even when I got into the cinema, I was not certain whether SSH would be present…

The 31min-long MV, which has cost some 12million dollars, was screened at the start. I believe that those present shared the same sentiments…. it is a great MV. But I thought that SSH’s shots were too few. But my friend said no…. maybe I was just too greedy in hoping that the MV only shows SSH! After the MV, the actor and actresses went on stage one after another. I almost stopped breathing then…. To my great relief, SSH did not appear….

The producer started by explaining SSH’s absence….
In fact quite some time back, SSH already told me that he did not wish to attend today’s briefing. He felt that it would be meaningless to attend if he could not continue in the drama. I wish he will be present today, as we have not yet given up on keeping him. However, since the military incident, he has not been in good shape. I respect his decision. He wanted me to let everybody present today, his friends as well as his fans know… he felt sorry for not being able to turn up today…. (he only mentioned of SSH’s absence at the briefing, but did not confirm his continuation in the drama).

Then it was the Q&A session. Most questions asked in relation to SSH, until the master of ceremonies had to comment “last question, please ask about the drama. No more questions on SSH please.”

Summary of Q&A:

1) Is SHH not able to continue with the drama?
The producer:
We have not given up on him. We are not stopping SSH to continue in the drama, but we have to follow the MMA’s decision. However we are still trying… We have submitted our appeal letter to the authorities. At present we do not have a replacement nor a better plan, and cannot confirm removing SSH from the cast. I have always regarded GunWoo’s role being specially tailored for SSH, and I don’t have any better replacement for him. The story emphasizes on both love and friendship, and friendship is a core part of the storyline.
(Although they did not confirm, but my Korean buddy told me he felt that 80-90% possibility that SSH is unable to continue. I looked at the foreign investors from Japan, Taiwan and China sitting at the first row. I bet they need to quickly resolve investment and contract issues off stage.)

2) KSH and KSW’s view on SSH

3) Will the MV be sold in Taiwan
I asked the Taiwan investor separately. He said definitely yes, and will be sold with the OST. Although the copyrights are expensive, but it will definitely be sold in Taiwan.

4) The Storyline
The scriptwriter said that the story is not entirely about the threesome’s love triangle, but will also emphasize on friendship between the 2 male roles. No idea of the ending as yet.
(After watching the MV, I strongly believe that SSH and KSW are truly good friends in reality. Such a feeling is difficult to be acted out, but you could somehow feel it.)
About the author:
She (my smart guess?) is a great fan of SSH, and is the moderator of Taiwan's Perfect SSH web. At the press briefing, she was interviewed by one of the local press media. She has accurately expressed the majority views from SSH's overseas fans.
She is currently studying in Seoul, mass communication course I believe. She decided to further her studies in Korea, to learn the Korean language..... all inspired by her love and support for SSH. Amazing....

Police have arrested 43 entertainers and professional baseball players for illegally avoiding military conscription and booked 48 others on similar charges without detention, winding up their two-month-long investigation into the draft-dodging scandal.

Investigators said Monday that those charged with draft-dodging were among a total of 136 young baseball players and entertainers suspected of paying brokers to manipulate the results of their physical tests.

Police sent the list of draft-dodgers to the Military Manpower Administration on Oct. 18. Some 52 violators, including actors such as Song Seung-heon, Jang Hyuk and Han Jae-suck, for whom the statute of limitations has expired, will have to join the military by the end of next month after having a new medical check-up by Nov. 4.

Police have investigated the case for the last two months after arresting two conscription brokers, identified as Woo, 38, and Kim, 29, and seizing medical supplies used by them for manipulating the urine tests of medical checks, a planner with a detailed list of draft-dodgers, prescriptions and bank books in late August.

The brokers are suspected of receiving a total of 4.2 billion won ($3.65 million) for helping 76 people avoid military service with feigned kidney disorders since January 2001.

Among 95 draft-dodgers to face judicial punishment as the prosecution period for their crimes has not expired, 43 confirmed to have avoided military duties through manipulated tests have been arrested while 48 others have been arrested without detention. They will be required to serve in the military after completing their prison terms if sentenced to a period shorter than 18 months.

In addition to the scandals related to the brokers, police have also acquired from the administration a list of 1,783 men exempted from military service for similar reasons and is set to investigate each case.

``After investigations into all the suspects on the lists have been completed, we will summon related officers of the administration for questioning in order to determine whether they were aware of the crimes in advance,¡¯¡¯ a police officer said.

I really hope Oppa can finish Sad Sonata bfore goint into the military...i was looking for so much to see him in it...but i also now the pressure on him if he doesn't join the military know...the only thing i can do now is to support him and wait for his return after 2 years...hope he'll come back as a better celebrity and make up for the 2 years that he lost of his career...

this is terrible news. i was really looking forward to this show. i'm such a huge fan of ssh. it's such a shame that he won't be able to make any films/dramas for another 2 years....

I've watched news of him yesterday thru taiwan entertainment news. His medical report was out and yes, his report showed that he is in perfect health. He is right now waiting to be enlisted.

His role in Sad Sonata will be taken up by another guy. However, we'll be able to see him in the mtv of Sad Sonata.. Saw a bit of this clip, think he looks real cool in it... Quite sad that he's unable to complete the filming...

I got sad after reading this one, I still can't accept that he will no longer do any series or movies in the next two years, i just kept on watching Summer scent and He was cool so I could still see him despite the fact that he is now gone and is ready to serve in the military exercises....I just hope he will be allowed to make some apperance once in a while....I will surely miss this hunk....

Hi guys! I'm a new member, and undeniable, I'm a new fan of SSH. So, I hope I will get a warm welcome here. I just took a fancy on this hot actor not so long ago considering that I've watched his drama series `Summer Scent` and I thought he look and act pretty good. (actually the drama is my bro`s but since it's a long holiday here in Malaysia, I thought I would like to watch anything to get over my boringness :popcorn:).

the rumors are true. he released a statement back in october or something saying that he was sorry for what he did and that he would take responsiblity for his actions. he was supposed to be one of the leads in a new drama called sad sonata with kwon sang woo and kim hee sun. however with this new development, he had to pull out and it's been confirmed that yeon jung-hoon will replace SSH. 2006 is a long ways away. to make a long story short, it's basically going to be a long two years without song seung hun. i don't think i can function.... goodbye SSH!! we'll miss you!

SSH's character will be replaced by yeon jung-hoon in sad love store (aka. sad sonata). it was confirmed in some korean reports at the beginning of november.
