Can you compare him to a summer's day? No, he is more lovely and more temperate. He is one of the Heavenly Kings. He is Leon Lai: The Honorary Ambassador for the 28th Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF). Hong Kong's premier annual movie event is taking place from April 6th to 21st and will showcase nearly 300 movies from more than 40 countries. Mr. Leon Lai Ming -- known to people throughout the region simply as Leon -- is the figurehead of this event. His is the face that will promote Hong Kong movies to the rest of the world and the film festival to the local Hong Kong audience.

At the penthouse of the Miramar Hotel in Tsimshatsui, Barry Manilow's classic tune, "Copacabana" is being piped in via discreet speakers; Lai has just walked off the stage having had countless photographs taken during the press conference for the HKIFF. Despite having just faced a wall of Hong Kong media, some of whom are still shouting "Leon", Lai is smiling. He has been in a gracious mood throughout the press conference -- even answering insipid questions about Shu Qi's alleged inability to shake off her character from The Eye 2.

The general press interviews have been brief while the TV interviews are held with Lai in dark glasses. For this interview, the glasses come off. The unbroken soft brown eye contact throughout the fifteen minute conversation leads one to believe that Lai is either a mean poker player or seriously passionate about his role as ambassador. In an intimate setting away from the main press conference area, a half dozen curious press and PR personnel look on as Peter Tsi Ka-Kei, director of the HKIFF, translates Lai's views on the cultural significance of the film festival. "Unless you're a person who doesn't like choices," says Lai, "the film festival is a rare occasion ... it's an exhilarating experience."

"Countries around this region have already been dominated by films from Hollywood and, other than that, maybe films from Europe. So, if we don't get together and pool our resources and create more synergies from cinemas from different film industries, from different places, it's not going to work."

The Barbarian Invasions, the French-Canadian film recently awarded Best Foreign Film at the Academy Awards is one movie Lai expresses particular interest in. Alluding to the way the film questions American 'culture' and how the world has embraced it, Lai says: "There are political issues in the film but it's really intriguing and very interesting."

Leon Lai. Heavenly King. Heavenly Ambassador.

Questioned about his favourite movies as a child, his eyes light up. Without need of Tsi's translation, Lai says directly, "Child is Star Wars. Star Wars and Alien."

Stressing the value and importance of the variety of offerings screening at the international film festival, Lai points out that no matter how accomplished or polished Hollywood blockbusters get, they ultimately cannot connect with local audiences at a deeper level. "It always happens in Asia when a certain national cinema is too dominating then sometimes the audience will feel that it's quite condescending or somehow they will have a distance to that particular country or cinema," he says.

Hollywood is not forgotten however. Questioned about his favourite movies as a child, his eyes light up. Without need of Tsi's translation, Lai says directly, "Child is Star Wars. Star Wars and Alien."

His favourite non-Hollywood movies as he's matured are Leon: The Professional and Le Grand Bleu (The Big Blue). Clearly, Lai is the perfect ambassador for the HKIFF. Personifying cultural diversity itself, Lai is a Heavenly King of Asian entertainment and a Luc Besson fan.

When asked which movie he had seen last, a long time was spent deciding upon what to say. The pause allowed one to ponder if it would be a foreign film, an art house film or perhaps a film from Asia? The toss up is between Golden Chicken 2 and The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, both films from 2003. Lai is so busy producing movies and music, the time to indulge in other's productions is a rare luxury.

Lai certainly is a busy man. He has received countless awards for music, the Golden Horse award for Best Leading Actor (Three: Going Home) in 2002, the Medal of Honour for his charity work in 2003 and is the Ambassador for the HKIFF in 2004. His work ethic will doubtless result in further accolades in the years to come but it is not the acclaim that drives him.

Future plans, Lai says, are to, "make films, do more records. Whether you're doing a film or you're making a music album there's still some pressure from the market. It's not a problem for me because I really commit to what I do and, at the end of the day, good work will come out of it."

Again, Lai reiterated, "I don't really take a lot of consideration with regards to the awards."

These contemplative musings continue as he is asked whether a successful film festival this year can show Hong Kong's resilience following a brutal 2003. "Whether there's a 'bounce back' or not, the show has to go on. It's the dream of all the film makers -- we should just do our best and see what happens," he says.

The two opening films of this year's festival, Baober in Love and Jade Goddess of Mercy, are from Mainland China. This is indicative of an increasing number of Mainland Chinese films coming into the Hong Kong market. Lai welcomed this development. He says, "there are a lot of good topics being portrayed in films from China. Unfortunately, there hasn't been a very good system or mechanism from the film industry in China but it's improving."

Lai speculated that there would be a positive change in 2005 and clarified his position on Mainland Chinese films entering Hong Kong. "There shouldn't be any competing scenario here because, first of all, we're one country and I believe the exchange and merging of films and film industries between the two places will actually come up with some really exciting and positive projects."

As Honorary Ambassador, Lai continues to enthuse about all cinema with thoughtful and thorough responses. He does not see the emerging Bangkok Film Festival as a competitor to the HKIFF. Rather, he sees it as a sister event. "The best thing to do is to actually try not to fight against each other," Lai says. "Instead, we should work towards the same goal which is to have a more vibrant Asian film industry as a whole."

For Lai, the world may be in chaos but, "with a lot of things happening around us in society and the world, I think it's probably going to be better for the film festival. When people face negative news or chaotic happenings, it's always nice to go into a cinema and watch movies."

In the blink of an eye, fifteen minutes with Leon Lai Ming has passed. On screen, on stage and in his albums, Lai's personna is filtered through the perspective of a director, a choreographer or a songwriter. In person, Lai's nature comes through unencumbered. He is honest, sincere and mature yet he has not lost the exuberance of youth. If the festival is half as captivating as its Honorary ambassador, it will be an exhilarating experience.

TVB will be holding another special show on Sunday in the build up to the Olympic Games entitled "Lighting of the Flame Thundering Night" and there will be many special guest singers and artistes present on the night, including Leon Lai, Ekin Cheng, Miriam Yeung, Hacken Lee and Nancy Sit along with the usual group of Olympic Stars and over three thousand members of the public.

In order to mark the event, a press conference was held yesterday and was attended by the event MC's Carol Cheng, Chin Ka Lok and Vincent Kuk. Also at the promotion were Edmond Leung, Leo Ku, Don Li, Rain Li, Raymond Lam, Shirley Yeung, Sammul Chan and Bosco Wong. On stage, they each took turns to play games such as walking the beam. When Edmond mounted the beam, Chin Ka Lok joked: "You have to pass an alcohol detection test before you can do sport! You appear to have been a good boy this time and seem to be wide awake!" When Edmond heard this, he did a one-legged stance as well as a cartwheel, really putting his all into the game.

I-I-I was Born in Beijing
On the 11th of December 1966, a little baby was born in Beijing. His family liked to call this little boy by his nicknames, which were "Wah Wah", Xiaojie etc. One wondered what was going to be his official name. Then his father decided that his name should be "Ming". When it is combined with his surname, it becomes "Lai Ming", which means "dawn" in Chinese. Would Lai Ming , as what his name says, have a life full of brightness and hope?

Life is a Journey
In the early 1970s, Lai Ming and his parents migrated to Hong Kong. As Lai Ming could not speak Cantonese then, he had a hard time trying to get used to his new life. At school, he was teased by his classmates because he was a mainlander and he could not speak Cantonese. Some of them even called him "The Ape from Beijing".
Then, when Lai Ming was 15 years old, he had to move on to England. His father had sent him there to study. As it was compulsory for every student to have an English name in his college, Lai Ming had to find an English name for himself. At first, he wanted "Alexander" to be his name as he had seen this name in a History textbook. However, it did not seem to sound right. So, instead his tutor flipped through the dictionary and found the name "Leon" for him.
Life in England was not quite a happy experience for Leon. In the first college which he went to, he was often beaten up by other students because Chinese were rare in the college. Even the school itself had a very harsh punishment of caning students with their pants stripped off. Hence, after one year, Leon changed his college. Then, another year passed and Leon decided to return to Hong Kong. Although his father wanted him to go back to his studies, he had started to find jobs and ways to get into the world of showbiz.

The Breaking Point
In 1986, Leon participated in the 5th New Talents Singing Competition organized by TVB and emerged the second runner-up. After that, he acted in a few TV serials and movies, but none of them became a hit. During this dark period of Leon's life, he toyed with the idea of quitting to become a production assistant. To make things worse, he broke up with his first love who was a girl called May. Finally, in 1989, the girls began to swoon at Leon in the Taiwanese serial, The Glorious Years. Being the television's newest romantic, TVB immediately cast him in two major serials, Challenge of Life and Breaking Point. Next, in 1990, PolyGram Records astutely signed a recording contract with Leon. Leon had become a full-fledged star. Later, Leon's popularity reached such a peak that he was named as one of the four Heavenly Kings of Hong Kong, together with Jacky Cheung, Andy Lau and Aaron Kwok.

With TVB's recent release of some of its music specials and music awards ceremonies on VCD, this has led to the displeasure of a number of record companies, who have lodged complaints to Hong Kong's authority for the music industry the IFPI in a move to claim royalties on the sale of such programmes that feature their singers and their songs. Leon Lai has recently joined in the protest as TVB have released one of his music specials previously filmed for the company, claiming that as he no longer has a contract with them, then he should be given royalties on any profit they continue to make from his work. He says: "Singers make these specials for promotion and having done the work, we should be entitled to claim our rewards as the company will already have made from the advertising revenue when the show was aired. (Will you be asking TVB for some money back?) No, I will leave this decision with them, if I need to chase anyone it will be the record company. (Will you be making your own productions and selling them to TVB to air instead?) It doesn't matter if I make them myself or not, but if they are selling them, then we should be entitled to royalties."

Leon name drops Michelle Reis; Dreams of romance in space with wife

SING TAO - Yesterday Leon Lai trekked to Macau to a grand opening event was hounded about being spotted enjoying some red wine with girlfriend Shu Qi earlier. The star instantly joked, "Fine if it's Shu Qi, fine if it's Michelle Reis, I haven't eaten out in 3 or 4 years. When I have time I will do more meaningful things, and do more things the audience likes to see. I won't disappoint the viewers." The two were spotted by magazine reporters at a restaurant and they insisted Shu Qi left through the back door. Leon explains: "First of all, the restaurant doesn't have a back door. Second, there were crew members from a digital graphics company having dinner there and it was a work dinner. Shu Qi wasn't there." Leon's been swamped in work lately and apparently hasn't had dinner with friends in a long time. One place Leon does want to see though is space, and will gladly trade a journey to the universe with two first class tickets to USA, and says he will take his wife with him to die together in space.

Yesterday, Leon did a recorded interview with RTHK, and he talked about the reason for setting up his own record company. He said, "These few years are the low point of the record industry. Many international record companies are under very great pressure. Also, I don't want to make everyone's burden greater, and sometimes many things which I want to do, they may not want to do. Then at this time, another record company came to find me, and it is my present East Asia Records." Leon also admitted that he had a sense of stubbornness regarding the production of the music videos of his songs. He had very high expectations which not many people could accept.

Leon is 37 years old this year, he was asked whether he had plans for marriage. Leon said that he had never thought of it before and he felt that his love relationship could be damaged by the media. Seeing Kenny Bee getting married to getting divorced had a great influence on him.

What the name of his new album? I haven't listen to his songs in a long time...
watchie
me too. I haven't heard of him lately. The very last album that I loved most is the Happy 2000 one, (don't konw chinese name) but it's great! The song is soo good and romantic. His voice is soo special and suits the song.
By the way, any other songs to recommend that is similar to that one? I think the some i'm talking about is "yu guo ho yee zhoi gin dou lei". So any other songs as good as this one?
His happy 2000 MTV was real funny and good too.

He is one artist dat doesnt follow fashion to look good or be cool. he just needs to be himself and that is why he is soo original.

Leon Lai attended a Casual Day event, Thursday September 30, 2004 Hong Kong

Leon Lai Ming yesterday attended a Casual Day event and played table tennis with Ko Lai Chak and Li Ching. Later Lai Ming teamed with Ko Lai Ching to play against Li Ching and other celebrities and Lai Ming won.

As for recent criticism of singers "lip syncing", Lai Ming said, "Right now Hong Kong singers rely on the media for protection. Only 50,000 to 60,000 people buy records but over 1 million are downloading. Sometimes they accuse singers of lip syncing without knowing the whole story. The influence on the image isn't good. Actually if the sound system is perfect, the singer's health condition is at its best, then he or she can perform live. A lot of times the situation may not allow that. Like for Mainland performances many events ask for taped music so the audience can see the artists at their best. (Many new comers are not qualified to sing live.) Not to mention new comers, even I am super poor. Give singers some space."

Leon Lai Ming attended "Leon What Concert", Saturday October 2, 2004 Hong Kong

Leon attended "Leon What Concert" which was held for him by Commercial Radio the night before. Besides hearing Leon sing at the concert, some fortunate fans also had a rare chance to get closer to their idol. This was because the winner of a game could become the passenger of Leon's bike for a few rounds on the stage. While the lucky fan was enjoying herself at the back of the Leon's bike, the fans under the stage were both envious and jeolous.

There were two fans from Taiwan who especially came to Hong Kong to watch the concert. At the arrangement of the organiser, they had a special privilege to take photographs together with Leon. They also specially brought duck tongues from Taiwan for Leon. After taking photographs and giving the gift, they had to go down the stage to watch the performance, but these two fans wanted to hug Leon before going down the stage. In the end, Leon granted their wish.

While chatting with the fans, their most concerned question was when Leon would hold a concert. Leon replied that he had always wanted to hold a concert, and he had already applied for 5 times to the "Hong Kong Coliseum", but till now, none of his applications had gone through yet. However, he would continue to try, until his application goes through.

Recently, Leon and Jerry Yen attended TVB's mid-autumn show and it was reported that the strength of Leon's fans was less than Jerry Yen and even the number of security guards was less than the other. About this, Leon said that he did not mind, because reports had their own perspective of report. Actually, he felt that every singer who performed that night was popular. As for the arrangement of security guards, Leon explained that the organiser had not arranged for any security guards that night. It was only that Jerry had already employed security guards for an activity before it, and since their working hours had not ended, so they continued to follow Jerry to the show.

[Ta Kung Pao 08/01/05]

TVB's "Jade Solid Gold Music Awards 2004" will be held tonight at the Hong Kong Coliseum and a special blessing ceremony was held yesterday. As many of the stars were rushing to attend the Tsunami fundraising event, it was a rather hectic day for them all. The MC's for this year's show will be Cheng Dan Shui, Denise Ho and Ronald Cheng and among the presentation guests will be the "Olympic Duo" Ko Lai Chak and Lee Ching, Vivian Chow and Felix Wong. In memory of the late lyricist genius James Wong, the show has invited Francis Yip and the Wynners to perform some of James' classics.

With the main focus of the event being on who will take the "Most Popular Male Singer Award", Andy Lau, Hacken Lee and Leo Ku are still the top three in the running and Andy says that he is confident in winning but is not too nervous because since 2000, it has been four years since he has won it and no matter if he wins or not tonight, he will still be able to accept it.

When asked if he is confident in becoming the most popular male singer in the Asia Pacific as well as Hong Kong, Andy says with excitement that if this is the case then it would be even better. However, he says that he would rather pass on his good luck to the victims of the Tsunami disaster in the hope that they can rebuild their homeland. As for the rumours that Leo Ku is using the production rights to his concert as an incentive for TVB to give him the award, Andy says that he does not believe this and TVB is not so shady, with their own operating procedures that he has faith in. Having just completed his own concert run recently and unlikely to hold another one for a few years, Andy says he believes that he will have a chance to work with TVB on a concert.

When Leo was asked about this suggested deal, Leo said candidly that he has put a lot of hard work and commitment into his work this year and everyone can see this, so he will not enter into any such deals. As for whether his concert will be produced by TVB next year, he says he is not sure as yet.

Leon announced a long time ago that he would not be competing for the awards, but he will still be present at the JSG awards ceremony because there is a new section where he will be singing some classic songs to raise funds for the Community Chest. Leon will be heading out to Beijing on the 9th to take part in a local charity show before attending the film festival. When asked about his former rumoured girlfriend Day Wong's reports that she will be marrying Li Yapeng in April, Leon refused to comment, saying: "I don't care. Don't ask me, it is not me getting married." When asked when he would be getting married, Leon laughed and said when he needs to, then he will get married.

There have been rumours that some of the stars have donated some of their personal effects directly to help the victims of the disaster and Edmond Leung was reported by Andy Hui to have donated a crutch. However, Edmond denies this, saying that a crutch would probably be more useful to a pensioner than to a victim of the tsunamis. He says that the appeal is not a joke and donating a crutch is not an auspicious gesture. Edmond says that he will not be angry at Andy for suggesting this and he will be donating a diamond necklace worth $130,000 for the charity auction in the hope of raising more money. Andy explained himself, saying that he was in a rush when he called Edmond that day and caused a misunderstanding, but this is not important because they are all doing their part.

Leon Lai Ming two nights ago attended a LOVE FROM CHINA disaster relief show in Beijing with Aaron Kwok Fu Sing, Eason Chan Yik Shun, Tian Liang and others. As of 10:30PM two nights ago the donation has already reached HK$20 million.

The 7th Annual China Changchun Film Festival was unveiled yesterday. The committee announced the nominations and most of the attention went to the direct competition for Best Actress between actresses from all three lands on two shores, including Mainland's Zhang Ziyi for JASMINE WOMAN (MOOT LEI FA HEUNG), Taiwan's Shu Qi for FOLIAGE (MEI YUN CHO) and Hong Kong's Kelly Chan Wai Lam for BREAKING NEWS (DAI SI GEIN).

As for Best Actor, the nominations included Lu Qi for DENG XIAOPING, Xia Yu for ELECTRIC SHADOW (DIN YING WONG SI), Leon Lai Ming for LEAVING ME LOVING YOU (DAI SING SIU SI) and Liu Ye for FOLIAGE. 20 Best Chinese films nominees included INFERNAL AFFAIRS 2 (MO GAN DOH 2), PTU, BREAKING NEWS, and LEAVING ME LOVING YOU. Best Director nominees included Johnnie To Kei Fung, Hou Yong, and Zheng Dongtian. This year a Box Office Value Award was added with nominees like NEW POLICE STORY and DENG XIAOPING.

The award ceremony will take place on the 12th. Lai Ming has already agreed to be a guest. Yesterday online information claimed that Lai Ming has agreed to attend in exchange for the Best Actor award, that the results have already been set thus other nominees like Chan Wai Lam and Shu Qi will not be attending.

Changchun Film Festival's Hong Kong guest coordinator Ho Kam Wa yesterday clarified that the rumor is unfair to Lai Ming and the awards. Changchun Film Festival is State Administration of Radio, Television and Film organized and the only award that permits actors from all three lands on two shores to compete in China. The festival is already in its seventh year and is a very large scale award ceremony in China. The rumor is truly negative and unfair for the festival.

Ho Kam Wa expressed that Lai Ming was already invited at the end of September and he already agreed in early October. At the time the nomination did not exist since applications were not even being accepted yet. Chan Wai Lam has agreed to attend another event in advance and was unsure whether she could attend the festival. Shu Qi has confirmed her absence a long time ago because she is working on a Hou Hsiao-Hsien film in which she plays three different roles.

I'm so sad about the recent news bout him that media dumped him.
It's like after the sweetness end, then just dump it away...
Leon voice is good, strong. He and Andy has different characters.
Maybe Leon is not as popular as Andy nowdays (also other four heavenly kings) but he's still worth some appreciation....
Go, Leon!!!

SING TAO - Recently Leon Lai flew to Vancouver for participate in a charity show and returned to Hong Kong two nights ago. As soon as Leon stepped foot inside the airport, thirty or so fans swarmed him, jabbing lucky money envelopes in his face. It might've been jet lag that left the superstar stone-faced. He didn't reach out to accept the lucky money and seeing that their idol had no reaction, fans shoved the money into his hands. Ticked off and getting impatient, Leon yells, "Can't I receive these later? I haven't even caught my breath yet!" Fans didn't care and continued to shove them in his hands. Leon had no choice but to take them.

News!

The Sun

Leon Lai Ming yesterday morning went to the Shatin racetrack for the million dollar walk for Community Chest and attended the start ceremony. Lai Ming had the support of a group of fans, but Chief Secretary for Administration Donald Tsang Yam Kun was more popular. When they appeared the people shook their hands and needed over ten security team members to open the road for them. Even the artists fought to shake hand and take pictures with Tsang Yam Kun.

Lai Ming was asked about Faye Wong and Li Yapeng's wedding rumors. "I don't know, I have nothing to say." Even when he was asked what he was working on he was just as secretive. Lai Ming responded with the most popular phrase recently. "At the appropriate time I will make a statement."

its aight....kind of getting the feeling lately music is something leon does to maintain his "idol status" and sell movie tickets rather than a passion of his...
praiseur
I don't think Leon care too much about his image..

I thought love and promises is alright. Not his best but hey, who can always have good albums all the time?? After so many albums, eventually there will be one that is not as good. That just my opinion. I think he still have what it takes to bring us good music!
gqsmuv
^^ here's the thing, i would think that he will put more 'effort' into this album, since it's his first in awhile, to try to recapture some fans again...but it really didn't seem like a good effort, or a good album for that matter...promotional wise, it was strong either...i do agree with the fact that no one can put out a good album each time...there are a lot of ppl who dont know who Leon is, and it would have been nice to get some of those fans...but oh well...

I read a lot of people talking bad about Leon now, its getting on my nerves. What is so bad about him? Is it his acting causing him to win Best Actor of 2003? Is it his singing? His singing won him Song of the Year awards and Best Singer of Asia in 2002. Is it because he doesn't win any awards on Jade Solid Gold or RTHK anymore? He declined accepting awards for a long time already after winning so many awards. I am not bragging about him. When he first started, i thought his songs were great, but his voice was not that great. However, he has improved a great deal singing for over 14 years. All these teenagers talking bad about singers they don't know about it. Just because you think someone else sings good doesn't mean you can diss who doesn't match up to your singer's songs. Its unbelievable how immature the HK or the Cantonese people think in this generation. People think he is just a pretty boy with no voice. Its amazing that you have this general idea about singers, and you cannot accept the fact that they could have improved or that they are good singers.

Jacky Cheung is a good singer, his voice matches his songs all the time. No voice is the best ok. He has had some horrible songs composed. He also has wonderful songs composed. He has been a singer for around 20 years i believe. The fact he has a lot of good songs makes him a good singer. Don't criticize singers who have not the chance to sing good songs for long periods of time.

Andy Lau's voice is dull and low. He uses that talent of his voice to match his songs, to make his songs sound good. He is not a junk singer. His songs are good its just that his voice cannot produce higher pitched singing. He is a good singer, he has won consecutively for 20 years, his awards.

There are people who have 4.0 in school, but do horrible on tests because something about tests just freak them out. It is the same for the singers you guys are dissing. Maybe Candy Lo just can't sing live because of a personal reason. Maybe the twins have a reason why they are not good performers. You people nowdays respect no one but the people you like. Even if the singers are not good singers, doesn't mean you can disrespect them. You don't have to listen to them, but just accept the fact they are singers.
heydude819
he's just not good at it anymore i guess...i remember back in the days when he used to be so famous (one of the best 4 singers...along with aaron kwok, jacky cheung, and one more person...was it eiken?) but yeah...like i said...he's just not good anymore.
