Born in West Virginia in the United States, Pan left for Taiwan when he was seven and returned to the US to study at the California Polytechnic in Pomona, where he was talent-scouted by record label BMG.
That led to a stint as a VJ on Channel V in 2000 and a bad-boy role in Taiwanese idol drama Spicy Hot Teacher.

A snippet of the article:
----------------------------
Pan was born in the US but hadn't heard a single word of English until he went to kindergarten at age 3. He couldn't understand what others were talking about. This made him feel like he was in prison.
One day, he tried more than 30 times to escape. At last, his teacher lost her temper and shouted at him, "Wilber, sit down!" Though he couldn't understand, he knew she was angry.
Later that day, his mother asked him, "What have you learned today?" He shouted, "Wilber, sit down!"
Pan did gradually learn to speak English and soon became a chatter-box. Because of this, his primary school teacher asked him to sit alone, three meters away from his classmates.
"It was so shameful," he recalled. "But I might make the best of this trait. I believe I'd make a successful PR manager if I weren't a singer."
