How will you raise them and why?

Like, will you raise them according to the country you live in, or will they be brought up Asian style? You're going to let them speak your asian language, watch tvb-series, read Wuxia novels or are you just letting them become Gwai Jai's?
rainsy
this is so funny..
i have never thought about this.

but i definately will learn them how to speak chinese.
and bring them to chinese school, so they know how to write and read.
i think it's important that you can speak your own language.. (moedertaal)

I see your from holland.. dus even verder in het nederlands tongue.gif
vraag me af of chinese school in de toekomst nog wel bestaat.

You will have a lot of Social Life in the early of yours life. But you must don't mind people will ask. This is your grandson or ....... And you have a lot of time to have One night stan...... Ah AH
nicole
If I ever had any kids I would like to teach them both cultures. Chinese and American.
Sylvie
What is a Gwai Jai?

Well, if I have kids (which I never will), I'll raise them in Asian style and in the style that I live in right now. It's their choice if they want to watch tvb-series or not. I'm pretty sure that I'll teach them my asian language (which I'm currently learning right now), I'll teach them vietnamese and chinese language... hehehe... maybe even introduce them to this forum too... if its still exist at that time... heheheh
HonMan
If I later have children, I will definitely teach them how to speak cantonese and read and write. I will make them go to chinese school...I will probably be living in canada at that time so english will be no problem for them.

It always makes me think about them watching tvb series.
I think they should learn cantonese like me, so they can enjoy the wide range of hk movie and music just like me.
I'll let them watch tvb series with me.

You say "gwai jai" (which means a white male/person) as if its a bad thing...

I'd raise them so that they are aware of different cultures and practices. I would want them to be able to speak Cantonese and English, watch TVB series and Australian drama series, read wuxia novels and Shakespearian plays, eat dim sum and meat pies and so forth.

They should know their history but not be bounded by it.
chaumay
I will teach and speak with them chinese.
x3.
asian.. its always cool to speak an extra language besides the language of the country you live in
m-blizz
send them to hong kong so they learn chinese. lol
then bring them back here when they're like 8 or so so they can learn english fluently as well.
candy.rain
uhmm in a chinese and western way. in my family now .. we're not really "asiany" as alot of asians i know. lols. but we're not like, completely westernised.

i would like them to learn cantonese ..as long as they can speak some..then its good enough. i dont care if they can read or write chinese , because i cant. LOL =.=! it`ll be cool if they watch TVB shows..but i dont care.. they can watch aussie TV if they want..

i fink with me as a mum..our house and stuff we do wont really be asiany or traditional .. because i duno much stuff. >< but we`ll eat rice! ><

of course they need to learn english..its Australia =.= learnin some culture stuff from australia is good .. because its where they live.. so they need to learn about it .

If they speak to me in canto .. cool .. but i duno if i can understand it happy.gif' english is just fine to me .. but not ALL the time though...
2PiEceFeeD
i would want them to speak sum chinese since they still have chinese blood in them. i fink ne1 raised in australia can speak english right?

i wouldnt mind too much wot shows the watch but it would be good if they watch tvb and tv shows so they can learn from both culture and ideas etc.
hardrice
at the moment my 3 year old boy can speak both chinese and english, and i would like him to contiune that way. because my parent can't speak much english so i want him to be able to communicate with them.. he already know all the current tvb series... clapping.gif
nyc4izzz
they're gonna be Americans but they'll definitely have to know Chinese. Send them to Chinese school. Gotta keep the language and traditions alive!!!
Ayanami
chances are they will kno less chinese than me, so ill make them goto chinese school, as well as drown them in chinese movies. i dont want the traditions to end on my generation
summi1983
I think I will want my kids half honger half western hahaha
i don't really want them to be ABC or CBC ~~
but i don't want them to pick up bad habits and attitudes from hongers either
so maybe somewhere in between is good =P
chaumay
I must let them integral in society where they borned, and keep my original root as possible (continually speak and learn chinese with them).
Linql
Hmm... most likely both the Asian ways. I'll make sure they learn Cantonese and the Asian's culture while they live in my house. Since they are going to be living in America, there won't be any problem for them to learn English in school.
cdub68
Most likely in the asian ways such as going to chinese school to learn how to read and write. I believe learning the language is probably the most important thing to learn about ones culture. They are of Asians and i think its important that they know that.
Jupa
I definitely want to raise them in a Western country.. preferably Australia or my homeland, England. I want my kids to be well-educated with English as their first language. I will also take them to Chinese school and encourage them to read Chinese books and magazines. Heehee, I am already full of plans for them, even though they probably haven't even been reincarnated yet!
jadedreams27
I would like to raise my kids happily preferbly in a suburb environment in Canada or America. I would like them to have English as their first language, but I will most definately make my kids learn other languages like Cantonese and Mandarin and maybe even Spanish, French, or Japanese. I will probably force them to watch TVB and other Asian movies. They would grow up being fans of TVB! And of course celebrate the Chinese culture such as Chinese New Year, Autumn Moon Festival, and Chinese food! haha The Chinese culture is very rich and interesting, so I think my kids would enjoy being a part of it.
chye8
I want my kids to speak chinese, but it's so hard nowadays with so much english influence. I myself have lost the tongue, but I can understand it very well. I don't know what it'll be like in the future. Probably have to send them to chinese school. Ewww!!
sy_ong
if ever i hav a kid......well.....of course that kid gotta know my language and my culture......otherwise he cant communicate with me.....and of course he gotta learn my hubby's language and culture for sure......and when he grows......depends on where he's gonna be....and learn more then!!!.....my kid will be great!! hahah

mahlif3
if i got children..i what first get them to speak chinese ..n den..may b for the next 5 yrs in america i what send them to hk school XD that way they cud speak englishy n write/read chinese XD asian style lol
xtcnrice
the same way my parents raised me. if i did something wrong, i'd get hurt for it (well obviously not when i was 1 years old. but a bit older than that). thinking of raising kids seems so hard!
headiness
I'm a proud chinese living in australia ... I would want my children to speak their mother language (chinese/canto)
xi3lahx
If i had a kid, i would want him to at least know how to communicate in chinese, know a bit about chinese customs and culture. The rest I would let him decide, like whether to watch chinese tv or english tv. As for sending him to chinese school or not... I guess I would, for a few months and see if they have any interest in it.
justin20000
i will raise them just like my parents raise me gave them any love what the need!!!!
pk_heaven
I will teach my kids multi-culture, both chinese & english. This will help them understand and adapt to living in different countries and taking care of themselves.
rtr
chiense first, put them in saturday chinese school, and english later
madz
I would definitely teach my children chinese , send them to chinese school etc. That way, they can get the best of both worlds (china and UK), they get the choice to choose where they want to go later on in life. e.g. take up a job in china. Give them the choice !

teaching them to (speak/read/write) another language other than english , could well be the best thing u can do for ur children.

don't limit their chances in life by your traditional ideas !
ettexor
my children will all learn how to speak and write chinese via chinese school.. They will only know english through school and tv.

My kids?

OMG...they're going to be so confused.
My wife speaks Spanish, Chinese (canto) and English.
So I figure they're going to have to learn all three.

I'll probably have them learn Chinese culture from their mother and
I'll teach them about American culture.
I don't think I'll have to raise them using TVB but they can watch it.
I'm a strong believer against watching too much TV as it probably screwed me up socially as well as physically (eyes and inactivity)

One advantage to living in San Francisco is the number of Asians in the Bay Area. I'm from the middle of nowhere bumf*ck mid-atlantic. Our public library had about 5 books on Asian culture, all about the great wall and silk road. My kids will know who they are and be confident earlier in their life than I ever will be.
idofan
My children will have to learn both English and Chinese. I will bring them to Chinese school and will expect them to speak Chinese at home and English at school. Its actually a benefit to know a second language!
lil_dimples
Obviously have them learn various language like myself i know 3 languages so i would hope they would know all of them and learn to write chinese too. Besides that i dont know because i dont wanna put them too hard. Whatever interest them for example learn karate or piano.
_Charmainia
Okay, I would want them to:
be able to speak mando/canto
appreciate the things they have
have a skill in music & some sort of self defence...

LOVE ME HEAPS AND HEAPS! ^__^
Artificial Sweetener
i'll teach them hakka first...then chinese....and they'll pick up the english from english shcool.

Like how my mother raised me basically.

But i'm not having a complete gwai jai son/daughter that only speaks english and not chinese.

Not that its a bad thing, just it'll be more benficial for them to know both languages.

summer-rose
i would want my children to learn cantonese first as it will be their mother tongue. then english and mandarin smile.gif
its best to know a range of languages.
5thAce
I'd let them do most things my parents wouldn't let me do lol well everything that i find ok. And remember that i used to be a kid too so you already know how i'll raise them haha. Like in high school i'd let them skip if they are sick or just want to at the end of the year cuz i do that well without my parents knowing and let them live sweet life xD...

But i'd probably want them to know cantonesse at least and be good at english and french.

s2Wennie
If i ever have children they must: learn a second of their choice (preferablly Chinese), play and sport and a musical instrument. In return, they will get more freedom than what I had considering the fact I know what's going on with their life. I don't want to raise my children the "Asian way" or the same way as my parents raised me.

I don't even know why I think about this stuff haha.

kwazytazz
i think i'll jsut let my children live watever lifestyle they want. Of course it have to depend on where we are gonna live, this will also influence the kids. I wouldn't mind any, cause they are all fine in everyway.
preciosobaby
ermmm...i think my children will be very westernize..lol```
simply due to the fact i was bought up that way..
however, they will have a lot of freedom too i think they will be rather spoilt but not too spoilt as they will have manners and everything *
they will learn a variety of different languages and will learn the art of polo and tennis.
hello1982
I want to learn my children a lot of langluage likes cantonese, mandarin, english and Dutch.
I want learn my children to play football or tennis or an another sports they like. And I want to travelling with my children over the world
Core2Duo
i will raise them in asian style. We are chinese and have to learn them the language and traditions. My parents also raise me like this and i will follow this way also
snuggie ♥
Being Chinese, I would definitely want my child to grow up knowing how to speak it, although I'm absolutely rubbish at the language. And being brought up in this bilingual society, I feel it very essential to have my kids to speak both languages well. I would love to have them watch TVB dramas and picking up canto, watching chinese dramas to learn martial arts (haha!) and just enjoy what they really like, just like how I enjoyed my TV shows, with the proper limitations of course. smile.gif
Shooting_Star
I would like to teach them the chinese culture and ensure that they are speak the language because that will always be a part of their identity.
I also believe that having a chinese upbringing makes children more respectful to their elders.
iieHateuu
