I think cantonese is the oldest of the two languages as mandarin comes from the north (mandchus)

I can speak cantonese, I hear mandarin almost everyday (thus i can speak it too)
between the two i still prefer cantonese because there are some weird sounds in mando like : "kan ma" for what are you doing is pretty a good example

I speak mandarin and I like it better
Ppl that don't speak both mando and canto say that mando sounds ALOT better
Frankly, I agree -____-
cantonese is very harsh on the ears

I think nowadays more people are learning and speaking mandarin but the majority of them learning and speaking are mostly cantonese people. The difference is that they're spoke differently but the chinese scripts are the same. I think i would stick with speaking cantonese because there aren't many cantonese schools, since it's a traditonal language.. pretty hard to learn and many people have a different dialect with cantonese.

i speak canto and i prefer canto..but then mando isnt bad either..
im learning mando..but i just find canto funnier and more casual...
jack_20my
prefer canto ofcourse, but i think mandarin is easier to learn than

cantonese, it sounds more chinese if you know what i mean

i can only speak cantonese and know zilch about mandarin.

personally i think mandarin is much more important than cantonese... and i would like to improve my mandarin but i know it will be very difficult.

i'm canto .
but i enjoy speaking and learning about mando more ;
i think it's easier to read the pinyin .

i know a bit of both from Cantonese relatives and Chinese [Mandarin] School.
I like mandarin better since it's more common.
a bunch of my friends can speak it while only two know cantonese.

beijing mandarin is a bit annoying though. x.x;

Mandarin like the way they speak it in Taiwan.... I can't stand the r's of Beijing.
if i was to read chinese, I read it in mandarin... First thing that pops out of my mouth is mandarin as well... My canto sounds like crap. lol no one understands it (I have a heavy heavy accent so I don't even understand myself sometimes -__-).
I like reading traditional though (it's prettier).

i could speak a little of both languages but i really prefer mandarin since it sounds better than canto. but in terms of everyday talk, canto is easier to speak and use.

I think mandarin sounds better than cantonese. More poetic, and flows better whereas cantonese seems more harsh and slang. I absolutely hate cantonese songs because i think they are usually non-sense or weird (like Leo Ku's song about the dogs and Cat) but I like watching cantonese dramas.

So, overall, I like Mandarin better but cantonese comes very close behind

I personally feel Mandarin is much easier to grasp, because Mandarin only has 4 tones, and Cantonese has about 6.. Cantonese has a lot more to learn than Mandarin such as the pronunciations etc..
But I think both are nice, but I like using Cantonese more. Don't know why..

Cantonese rules! Mandarin sound so old-fashioned and outdated.

I agree ! When I was little I didn't understand Mandarin or Cantonese but I thought Mandarin sounded better. x: I used to watch drama series with my mom & she watched them in both languages. Whenever I hear someone speak Cantonese it sounds like they're all yelling at each other. ><

I prefer canto, even though mando is smoother and altogether nicer and stuff.

Canto is a lot more choppy and rough, but it has more slang and stuff so I find it better to communicate and describe stuff. happy.gif

Also, canto is a lot harder to learn than mando, mando only has 4-5 tones whereas canto has like 9+ tones, and the pronunciation is harder which just kinda makes it easier to express yourself..

I studied both. I think my view is pretty objective since I'm not Chinese. I prefer Mandarin because the pronunciations are less exaggerated for an English speaker than Cantonese. I'm a bit embarrassed to try and speak Cantonese even when it's spoken to me because the pronunciations tend to feel more unfamiliar. It just feels awkward.

Canto is mostly slang, so its different from how we speak compared to how we write. For mando it's the same, so I guess Mando is easier to learn especailly if you know English as you can learn it from pinyin. I think Mando is more useful anyway, but I only know Canto smile.gifsmile.gif
