Which language do you guys like better? This of course only applies to people who speak both because usually if you only speak one of the two, you'll be more inclined to pick that one.

Mandarin has a more smooth flow to it, it sounds much better when you're trying to woo a chick

but Cantonese is much better for simply everyday talk. That's just the way I see it.

I speak both and I like canto better because there's slang and the swearing is better. Jokes are play on words are a lot better when speaking in canto.

mandarin(non-beijing) imo sounds smoother and flows more easily than cantonese. I've been watching a lot of chinese series recently, HK/Taiwanese and for some reason the huge amount of slang in cantonese pisses me off. That's why on my radio i listen to a mandarin station instead of cantonese(english doesnt count). I also noticed that i prefer listening to a female voice(maybe between 18-30 yrs old) speak mandarin because it sounds nice. When a male with with a deep voice starts speaking, or an older women speaks, it doesn't sound too good to me. I don't mean that as a diss, it's just something that i noticed from listening to the mando radio a lot. This goes for most languages, especially japanese.
Also, when i say mandarin im referring more to taiwanese mandarin, not beijing/mainland simply because i don't like that "er" sound that they put at the end of specific words, for example instead of "na3 li3" (where), mainland ppl go "nar3". Maybe i'm just not used to it iono. It doesn't sound good to me. Perhaps this was what ~ azn pink angel ~ meant in the second post in this topic.
THat is not to say i don't like cantonese btw, i think cantonese is an awesome language.

Actually Cantonese is much older than Mandarin. Cantonese is far closer to ancient and Middle Chinese than Mandarin is.

me wanna add somfin else... altho i agreed w/ canto b4, i fink mando s2 songs 4 some reason 2 me sounds more romantic-ish...

'
I speak a bit of both but ill have to say that mandarin is FAR better than cantonese. Mandarin is alot smoother and clearer in songs and the big plus is that you dont have to get pissed off listening to the retards who wreak the cantonese dialet with an annoying slurring five year old kid style, putting stretched out GAY "lar" and "wah" sounds at the end of each and every sentence.

but then again mandarin accents depends on who is speaking it, some have better than others i find vicky zhao's speaking accent to be one of the best to listen to

Many says Chinese when they actually mean Mandarin. I know only Cantonese though.
Intresting. I do agree mando is so much smoother but i like canto better because it seems to have more of a modern culture glow to it. Mando seems old school =/

Mandarin somehow sounds much pleasant and smoother than Canto. But I prefer Canto just because of all the slangs.
I tend to think of Mando as traditional chinese, and Canto as the new generation Chinese, lol. (no offence to those who speaks mandarin)
I like canto more. I agree that mando have a strange sound and it's old fashion.

Beijing accent Mandarin sounds rough and harsh, my preference lies with accents that are softer (i.e. Taiwanese accent). For conversational purposes I prefer Cantonese; there's also a lot more slang and stuff but my preferences may have been influenced by HK films/series. For songs I tend to like Mandarin better.

I can speak fluent cantonese and can understand mandarin if spoken slowly. I actually like both for diff reasons. i like Cantonese for its slangs and unusual words. I like mandarin for it's poetic sounds and properness. When u speak mandarin, it's almost the same as reading it.

And it is quite handy to speak both dialect, for movies, friends, etc.
