what are your favorite tvb series but the ratings are average/low?

right now, i think "the master of tai chi" is underrated. great series but ratings are in the 20s.

eternal happiness was an underrated series toos xD

Eternal Happiness was underrated? I thought it was a big hit back in the day. O.o But then again I watched it on my friend's recommendation. I don't know what the ratings were like.

YES! TMOTC is SUCH an underrated show! The HK audience should be ashamed. This is TVB offering you something fresh and grand! But ah well, different taste perhaps. But even if one doesn't think it's great, surely it deserves more than a 20+ viewership. sleep.gif

Yeah, I think Eternal Happiness was underrated when it was broadcasted b/c the leads raymond, michelle, myolie and joe were all 'newbies' at the time but it was a good series indeed.

I thought Ultimate Crime Fighther was underrated last year. On Contarary, Heart of Greed was over-rated.

The most UNDERRATED TVB series has to be "Green Hope" starring Stephen Fung, Bowie Lam, Joey Yung and Melissa Ng. This series focus on a serious illness and Stephen was very impressive in the lead role. It also doesn't drag on with the love relationships. However, the ratings were very poor which is probably why TVB doesn't make these type of series anymore. Such a shame...

^ Ooo, OMG I totally agree with kenji1234, the Green Hope was fantastic. It was a very realistic portrayal of mental illness and the hardships they have to overcome. The relationship btw the brothers (Bowie and Stephen) were done very very well and so well written. Then you had Mary Hom in the role as the drug addict mom. Also, while Melissa could be viewed as a "semi-villian" in the series, because she left Bowie, the audience could really relate to her character. Being uninformed about mental illness, you could see why Melissa's character was scared to interact with Stephen. Plus, you got some great story with Yoyo and Lai Suen..

I recently rewatched the series, and it still holds up with time. The series portrayed mental illness BEFORE it became "popular" (Myolie in Golden Faith, Roger in Square Pegs). And Stephen's performance handily beats Roger's unrealistic Ah Wong in Square Pegs and ESPECIALLY horribly written Ah Wong in The Simple Life.

But the ratings were so bad. It was like low 20s sad-smiley-065.gif such a shame.

The Master of Tai Chi is really good but i don't understand why the ratings is so low. The actors in it are good, as well as the actresses. The plot is not bad and the setting is cool
missLILY
The ratings have been really low lately tho. Like the Seventh Day, they kept hitting low 27/28 ratings.. Tai Chi even ranked higher than the Seventh Day. BSS was higher than usual tho ? It hit like 29-30 i think.. Tai Chi isn't that great.. there were far more better ancient series than it. I'm only watching it because of Raymond + Melissa.. and I have to admit this series somewhat bores me ><
rayoliefan
Yup, I agree that Tai Chi is pretty underrated. Great cast and storyline, but the HK audience doesn't seem to appreciate this kind of series. Well, at least it did better than the Seventh Day. Hopefully, this week's ratings will be higher.
pnelonia
yeh Master of Tai Chi is good......but i didnt like Seventh Day, it got so boring in the middle.
happytavia-bernice
i thought that the seventh day was underrated. i think that it could have been a little higher, i mean it was a really good series.
poopoo16
phoenix rising. finally something fresh, yet was barely promoted. Sigh. TVB sure has its priorities messed up.
dragon51013
not sure if this is an underrated tvb series, but war of the genders with dayo wong and dodo
siaoliao
^It was underrated?! Are you sure? I thought the ratings were sky high for that one.
calvintcl
Recently the Seventh days and The master of Tai Chi have been underrated..Both drama by standard is quite good and deserved more...

I guess I'll have to say The Master of Tai Chi. I thought it was a great series but was surprised by its ratings.

I too agree with kenji1234 that "Green Hope" was underrated.

But I would have to disagree that Roger's Ah Wong is unrealistic in comparison. If one is comparing the two Stephen's character suffered a mental illness while Roger's character has mental retardation, which is not a mental illness. Totally different because Stephen's character suffered internally while struggling with himself and Roger's character suffered externally with the "abuse" he received for being mentally retarded. I think both actors portrayed their roles to its character exactly, but Stephen had the more difficult role and therefore the better portrayal.

Another series I have to agree with is "Phoenix Rising." C'mon, how often do you get to see the female side of being in prision? Not to mention the solid, but less popular cast.

"The Last Breakthrough" also didn't get worthy ratings. It's almost as if people don't care about series that actually matter and send a good message. TV is entertainment so I can understand people not like serious stuff, but aren't people at least interested enough to watch?

omg net deception! One of the best plots ever, it doesn't dwell on black vs. white because it talks about how the world is more morally ambiguous then most hope. And omgsh wong hei gives such a good performance in there!

Yet I have not heard another person talk about this show once.

Except in "Life Made Simple," Ah Wong DELIVERED A BABY. Even a person with normal IQ would be frightened and scared at the sight of so much blood and a baby's head pushing out. But yeah Ah Wong was able to successfully deliver a baby AND cut the umbilical cord. I don't find that particularly realistic. Sure it shows some of the prejudicies against the mentally retarded..but the way the series portrays him, it makes Ah Wong out to be a hero everytime, which is not a very realistic point.

^ I don't know if there was ever a finding where a mentally retarded person delivered a baby, but it is not at all unrealistic. A mentally retarded person doesn't have the same mental capacity as a "normal" person and therefore doesn't see the world in the same way, but they operate in the same world. At most, Ah Wong was mildly retarded and therefore able to do a lot of things on his own, so I wouldn't say that Ah Wong wasn't frightened, but he instead chose to put that fear aside and did what he had to do.

Another example would be when a mentally retarded person is being bullied. He assumes that the bully is playing with him and it isn't until he gets hurt when he realizes that the bully is not playing with him. They just don't have the mental capacity to realize certain things, but do have the mental capacity to differentiate what's good or bad, right or wrong, fun or not fun.

Obviously it is up to the individual case, but in Ah Wong's case I wouldn't even categorize him as being severe enough to be mildly retarded. Then again, I'm not a doctor.

yep! net deception n the last breakthrough were great. though i only watched the first part of net deception n i didn't finish watching the last breakthrough then, i think they had gd plots. i wanted to finish watching them but there are other series coming out too so i keep dragging them back sad-smiley-065.gif
i think i will watch them at the end of the yr though cuz their plot seems just so interesting. wonder why they didn't really receive gd ratings - or were the ratings bad? (i don't really noe cuz i don't keep track of the ratings of tvb series).
Eliotyuhin99
I can't believe Master of Tai Chi is not popular in HK. I was totally into the series and the Vincent/Melissa story line, maybe is because Myolie's fake acting scared HK people away from watching it
i_fotted
I thought Lethal Weapon of Love and Passion was good but it performed poorly based on ratings. I'm not sure what the reason was.

Yea me too. i thought the series wasnt that bad either.
I quite like the Charm Beneath and thought that it was a mixture of Heart of Greed and war and beauty which are two great series. however it wasnt that popular which was a surprise.
.sugarhearts
underrated meaning low ratings or the production wasn't very popular yet it was great?
Kenway
Frankly speaking. I only saw overrated in TVB series and not underated
ViN Cent
dance of passion... because the dialogue and screenwriting is just excellent tho it might be kind of hard for viewers to follow
HySquared
I'm sorry but I believe The Master of Tai Chi is very overrated, or at least very overhyped.
Felli
'Seventh Day' was so bad. They tried too hard to create another 'UTCOL'. Underrated? I beg to differ.

'Land Of Wealth' was extremely underrated. Great plot, great cast & fantastic acting, yet low ratings. Thankfully it was a hit in China.
strawberry_hit
The Conqueror's Story - it's old i know. but it's great story and good acting...however i remember it didn't do too well...
llwy12
Hmmm...this is a difficult one because there are quite a few series that I would put in this category....though I don't really keep track of ratings, so I wouldn't really know, since I feel that ratings don't mean anything when it comes to a good series -- to me, it just means that a particular series didn't suit the audience's taste, but didn't mean the series wasn't good.

I would agree that TMOTC was underrated...though it's not really one of my favorites (I did find a couple scenes quite boring), but overall the acting was very well done...especially Vincent and Melissa. I didn't like Myolie though (as usual) -- her acting is always bad IMO....
