Making Pho is really easy. If you are lazy, you can just go to the supermarket and buy the ready made Pho broth. All you need to do is add in any kind of meat you want, some vegetable, boil it up and then add in the noodles =) Also add in whatever spices you want. I used this method to cook for my mom, she didnt complain one bit so i guess it is alright food?

You know how some people go to restaurants to eat pho. the soup in that pho is not REAL pho soup. That is just MSG powder mixed with hot water. What you have been eating is just a cheap substitution for PHO soup. Real pho soup takes days of preparation to get that special salty flavor pho has. It requires boiling bones for hours or days.

I don't know but dad makes the soup for his restaurant. It takes quite a bit of preparation for the meat, depending on what kinds you want. It took him a while to get that 'just right' taste as well. Our house really smelled like the soup for a while when he had to try it out. Sorry, I can't help you with it!

I made pho today. It's easy:
12 cups of canned chicken broth
4 cups of canned beef broth
1 1/2 package of rice noodles
2 pounds of round or sirloin steak sliced very thinly
1 pound bean sprouts
4-8 ounces of basil, preferably Thai
2 bunches of scallions chopped
5 cloves of garlic chopped
Peeled piece of ginger, the size of a quarter, chopped
1 jalapeno pepper (sliced thinly) (watch your hands. Don't touch).
(optional)
Hoisin sauce )
5-6 pieces of Star anise
Tablespoon 5-spice powder
Two big pots (or at least 1)
1. Saute/stir fry the garlic and ginger
2. Add chicken broth, beef broth, star anise and 5-spice powder and
simmer for at least 30-60 minutes (I like a lot of anise flavor, so you
might want to add more). (Beef broth tend to be very salty, so I don't
use it for 100% of the broth)
3. Mostly fill other pot with water and bring to a rolling boil.
(NOTE: if you don't' have 2 pots, cook noodles in pot with broth, but
add more broth)
4. Add rice noodles to pot and stir to separate. Cook until tender and
fully cooked. (NOTE: The noodles will absorb a lot of broth unless
they are fully cooked)
5. Raise broth to a full boil.
6. Drain noodles in a colander and add to the broth.
7. Add beef and cook until just done
8. Add bean sprouts, basil, scallions.
9. Serve in bowls with jalapeno pepper and hoisin sauce added to taste
10. Tell your friends not to eat the star anise.

Hi Joseph,
You are not alone, there are a lot of people who are not VN but love to eat Pho. It is becoming a very popular dish.
What is your favorite pho place and where do you live. do you eat other Asian food as well.
Would you be interested in writing some reviews. I am looking for some good reviews from the every day people like you and me.
If could, please contact me.
Thanks.

Pho is Vietnamese style soup noodle. The soup is usually beef based and there are rice noodles in the soup. Add different cuts of beef such as sliced brisket, steak, tendons, beef balls, tripe, etc. There usually green and white onions in the soup. On the side you get a plate of jalepeno peppers, bean sprouts, a lime wedge, and some basil that the customer adds.
Condiments on the side are hosin sauce and siracha hot sauce.

When you order that in a restaurant, sometimes you get the raw beef on a separate plate. This way you can cook it as little or as much as you like. As for the noodles, that's to prevent the noodles from getting really soggy, but they're already cooked and ready to eat. You are just heating it up when you throw it in the soup. The bean sprouts are always served on the side as a garnish. The sauce is a condiment kinda like ketchup on fries.

and oh yes JtWo, whats that street dish thats like tofu and veg and the roadside seller with just pour piping hot oil with some black (fish? maybe?) sauce over it and voila, its served..
i tasted it when i went to hanoi in winter, and it was soooo delicious... i have since had cravings for it but never know how to order them again in the overseas viet eateries because I dunno what its called...

I love to eat PHO and I do know how to make it. I can tell you making home-make PHO is the best, because you can add as much raw beef you like and vegs, but the it takes alot of work and to me it worth it, so you have to see if you feel the same way. All I will said here is that it takes alot of bones and about a day to make.
