so, what second language are you taking in school right now? and why did you choose that specific language?
right now I'm taking French... because well, for starters it's required at my school

and even if it wasn't, I'll still take it because I've been learning it since grade 4 and it's a pretty easy subject =)

Well, here in germany we MUST learn two foreign languages if we want to go to uni.. my first was english, starting in grade 5.
Then i started learning french in grade 7 - i had the choice between latin and french ;-) so that wasnt really hard to choose... plus both my parents speak french and travel to france quite often..

I'm taking German, because I have relatives who live in Switzerland and because it's similar to Swedish, which make it easier to learn. I have taken German lessons since the 6th grade. At first I thought it was quite boring....but after a few years I started to like it, that's why I decided to continue with it at Highschool.
I took french because I don't like spanish and there wasn't anyone who picked german. Now, I have to stick out with french and the only thing I can do is to blame myself. The lessons are boring like heck and I don't know what's wrong with me, it seems like I can't pronounce the words right and I've taken lessons in two years! I'll definitely drop french at highschool and take japanese instead.

second language for me is french which i took for 9 years (it's mandatory). Now I'm taking optional language courses such as german and spanish. both are quite similar to english and french...very easy; free credit and good marks! i'm also going to viet school, my viet isn't very fluent.

My second language in school is french and I think it's very hard...always getting B's. I wanted to take mandarin but I'm already taking a mandarin course outside of school, so i'm stuck with french. Of course there's spanish but my parents say i won't have many chances to speak spanish in the future.

Took french in grade 8, right now I'm taking mandarin. I have to say because of my cantonese background, mandarin is super easy, so it isn't really like im learning a new language, but its easiness = very good grades + no stress ><"

^ ur just like me! I took Cantonese for 9 weeks in 6th, 1semester in 7th, and Mandarin for 9,10,11. I took it because I know Cantonese to begin with, which makes my whole world easier. But now I regret taking Chinese, because my teacher is a total b*t*h. I just wasted the past 3 years of my life. I shoulda taken Japanese, but *sarcastically* nooo...I just had to take the easy way out of life and take chinese.

Well, I have been studying in a public school in Malaysia... So, I was forced to learn Malay language since I was really small... English was our second language as we have various races and culture in our country... And since I am a Chinese, I have to learn how to speak Cantonese and my mother tongue is Teochew.... SO, instead of having 1 second language, I have 3!!!

Its hard to say what my 2nd language is, cos in Singapore we sorta learn both english and your mother language at around the same time i guess. English is the official language but I don't see chinese as my 2nd language either. The term 2nd language in my opinion has the connotation of being inferior. Learning Japanese now though.

Yeah, kell have said all I've wanted to say. I'm Singaporean too! Just to correct, the s'pore gov set mandarin, english, malay, and tamil as the co-official languages. In school, we choose only one type to learn, so I'm a chinese, I'll learn chinese. Malay is the national language officially as our national anthem is malay, but I doubt most chinese s'porean can speak malay. Hello kell!

I took french in high school, but now since I'm in college i'm starting to forget it...
I took 3 years of German in high school and I can barely count to ten. it's pretty sad. all we did in that class was watch german movies. basically learned that germans like sex and beer.
Let's see, I took French I in my freshmen year in high school. That class totally sucks. Can't prounouce most of the words. The teacher was funny but I don't get that class and I probably don't need to use it in the future, so I drop that class. In my soaphmore year, I took Chinese Mandarin. It was a pretty easy class. Great teacher and everything. I'm currently taking Mandarin VI now. It's gotten harder through the year but I still enjoy the class.

I'm glade I took that class because now I can understand some of the mandarin when I watch a series in mandarin. I wish I could've took Japaneses at the same time too but can't because of the schdule.

I took about four years of Spanish through Junior High and High School. Sad that I don't think I remember any of it except Hola. I did pretty well in those classes too. I also took Latin for two years in High School. We were forced to... And I remember even less of that.

wow seems like a lot of Europeans here... in the US we are only required to choose 1 foreign language for 2 years(usually Spanish, French, or German, some schools have Latin)...but you dont really learn much because we cant use the language and so most of it is forgotten after it is learnt...

too bad

I took indo in primary school, but thats because we didnt have a choice. didnt really do well in it, but they went at a very slow pace so that was good
then in highschool i took mandarin, which was easy as i knew abit to start off with. however so did everyone else, so when it came down to the final enterance exams for uni, the average for the state was in the high 70's and everyone were badly scaled

the thing is that at the moment, cant be easier since the average is already so high, but it also cant be harder since at this stage, it is difficult for the non background students. damn i knew i should have done geography

anyone else from perth in the same situation?
