Brand either WD or Seagate.
I have both brands on 5 of my systems and none of them has failed. Except my external hdd which was never turned off for 2 years and yea...over heated.
-> USD i found heaps of HDD around 166 and Under at 1 TB to 750 GB (750 = 99 Bucks)
You may find cheaper but i am from AU so yea, this is the website i found "www.directron.com"
I just used that to compare prices to the AU listing, since AUD practically equals USD but still AUD are over pricing especially in the games department where i get more than 50% off purchasing US sold games.
-> External Casing
Pick any really...i've got a fair bit and they all the same. The only concern is whether you'll have this External HDD as backup or use during your computer boot up. (Which then questions why don't you make it internal?)
On that website it has a 1tb for 170 under so that cool but i prefer to get the external case and hdd myself.
Anyways, if you want a specific brand for the external casing then Vantec is my choice. I have 5 at the moment and the one i use alot has a rear exhaust fan so it makes it more stable for prolong use.

I have Western Digital one and it is usually the cheapest out there. Hard drives are really cheap these days so it won't be hard to find one that's under $200 USD.

I've owned both WD and Seagate.. and honestly. they have been great for me..
Price point wise, I do believe WD is cheaper slightly.. otherwise i'm quite satisified by their similar performances..

200$US should be enough, the cheapest I've seen is around 160$ for 1TB.
I would recommend using Western Digital or a Seagate as hard drive, put within an external enclosure. the enclosure cost around 20-40$. The hard disk the cheapest 1TB I've ever seen of Seagate is around 140$ at ncix.com
Some says Samsung's drive is very fast but I've heard it being less reliable.

Hello I need to buy an external hard drive, but I'm not sure which brand is good out there...
I'm willing to pay less than 120... I need something around 320 gb +
I prefer that's powered by usb & not ac adapter...
Thanks !

I prefer Western Digital My Passport hard drives. Here's one from Newegg that fits your budget
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16822136227This is the only brand I have used for portable hard drives and I have never had any issues with it. I'm not sure how other brands are like but I know SimpleTech and Iomega comes out with 2.5" portable hard drives.

I think what your looking for are
"Passport Portable HDD"
The only 320 GB and PP-HDD is priced at 200 AUD.
Your from US so i went to a US computer seller. (They are located in TEXAS)
http://www.directron.com/wdme3200tn.htmlThe Australian one is model "WDME3200TA" at 200 AUD around and the american site is obviously "WDME3200TN" at 140 USD.
Western Digital Portable Passport HDD with 1 Year Warranty and Western Digital is one of the big boys in the HDD market.
* Looks like someone beat me to it and at a much cheaper american reseller.

wow I didn't know you can get 2.5" portable HDD for so cheap... now that I take a look, I do see 320GB models around 130$
for those who mentioned 500GB models they are 3.5" so it takes an AC adapter I think

I also recommended the western digital passport. They are very portable. The only issue I had with it was that one of my computer didn't recognize it because some motherboards/computers does not provide enough power to the western digital passport. Hence in order to get enough power, you will need to purchase another USB cable from western digital that has 2 USB inputs and 1 USB output. This way your computer will be able to provide enough power for the external hard drive. This will use up 2 Usb ports on your computer (so if u don't have enough you will need to unplug something else) and it the cord cost about 15 bucks (I believe). Good luck!

All HD are the same nowdays. i use seagate since it has a 16MB cache compare to the 8MB.
With 200 bux u can buy like 1terabyte for like 150 bux or 130 bux at futureshop or other computers store.

WD isnt cheap, there are cheaper ones. I think the question is do you want only usb or firewire, even eSata or W/LAN.
If you only use it for backup USB should be good enough. I would buy one also with LAN, so I can get access with my laptop.

if you dont want premium features (ie... 1 touch backup, eSATA, firewire, LAN), they are actually pretty cheap.

I like the LaCie enclosures. They have been around forever, and while not as cheap as the other brands, they are very solidly made.

There are too many brands to choose from like WD, Seagate, Iomega and Hitatchi to name the most popular. I prefer WD or Seagate. Another option is to buy an external USB enclosure and a 3.5" harddrive. This is cheaper but lack the software support, but you don't really need it.

LaciE if you going to get a external HDD might as well go BIG.
LaciE provides good external HDD
forgot the name of the other brand.
WD and Seagate are whatevers for smaller space.
Im not a Seagatge fan. for 1 reason they always break read some of the reviews before buying. alot of people say they go bad and from experience my friend had 2 external HDD from Seagate and they died after 1year 1 internal and that died after 2 years. told him go for WD didnt have a problem since. WD is alright, Seagate i would not recommend, just i.m.o. some people dont have a problem with Seagate.

I personally go for Maxtor hard drives because they have never failed me before. Hitachi hard drives should be avoided becausemy old one failed and I lost all my data >_< Only managed to recovery the data that was backed up, but oh well.
Seagate and Western Digital Hard Drives are good too.

Just beware that Hitachi has two "ranges" of hard drives. One "range" is those that they acquired when IBM sold their hard drive business to Hitachi. These are the ones that you should avoid - some of my friend used to nickname the IBM DeskStar range as DeathStar.
The other range is the Hitachi design and manufactured ones. They are rock solid and very reliable. We have two Hitachi SANs at work with over 50TB of disk space and we did not have a single disk failure yet for the last few years. (note: not all disks in the SANs are Hitachi but many of the fibre channel disks are Hitachi)

I recommend getting a Western Digital harddrive 5200rpm 3.5" will be better since it will run cooler, plus you never ever get to its maximum speed thru a usb, and buy your self a one of those Harddrive 3.5" to usb casing, it may be big, but save you alot fo money. 1tb of WD is around 100$, 80$ for the green one, and casing is like 50$, 130$ you can get 1tb external drive.
Go with WD, I had a really bad experience with seagate one.

My friend with the $200 you got, you can get 1TB drive online with no problem. I recommend WD drive because I got one and been using it since 2002. Good Luck
any brand it ok. get 2 tb hard drives for about 220 dollars

I just got an OEM 1.5TB WD drive for $102 total incl. tax. If you look around, you should be able to find a 1TB drive for about $70. If you want one in an enclosure, it'll cost maybe $10-$15 more.

I'd go for WD, but imo as long as the hdd has a decent housing then any will do as long as you dun care about transfer speed since a lot of the generic brands generally buys hdd's from the larger companies and use their own housings to lower costs

I prefer western digital and seagate.
Http://www.newegg.com is a great place to purchase hard drives or if you live near the retail store of Microcenter which is another great place to visit.
