Joey Wong was my fav actress durin the early 90's...my fav role of hers was the vulnerable ghost from Chinese Ghost Story w/ Leslie Cheung...never has any ghost in HK films history looked as beautiful as Joey did...

Wow! Thanks for the photos! I'm a huge fan of ACGS. I absolutely love Leslie and Joey. They are such a cute couple!!

She also starred in the Green Snake, God of Gamblers, Beautiful Shanghai, Peony Pavilion, Eagle Shooting Heroes, and many more!

I really love Joey back in the 90's. She was in my opinion, the most beautiful hong kong actress!! She looks a little mix, like chinese/japanese. She was just absolutely stunning and she can really act! I think she makes a good couple with actors like Jacky Cheung in 'Tian Lian Lu Yill', Leslie in 'Ghost Story', Andy Lau in 'God of Gambler', Chow Yun Fat in 'Dai Chang Foo Yut Gay', and Tony Leung in just any movie! tongue.gif Basically, she was so good looking that she looks good with just any decent looking guys!

Yeah, she's pretty as well as sexy. Is Leslie the guy from Preal Princess I and II and that one dude's younger brother? where is Leslie now?

No, Leslie Cheung is a famous singer and actor, not in Pearl Princess. Unfortunately, Leslie is no longer here with us sad-smiley-065.gif. He passed away in April 2003.

(5/18/2005) Hsu Feng promoted her new film SHANGHAI WOMEN in Beijing.
The film is slated for a Mid Autumn Festival release.
Hsu Feng regretfully said that Joey Wong Cho Yin might not be able
to attend the premiere. She has settled in Vancouver and hoped to live
the life that she wanted to live. She did not want to be recognized when
she went out to eat and had to put on make up when she went out. If
SHANGHAI WOMEN promoted her again she was afraid that her life would be
disturbed.
Hsu Feng even revealed that her company has signed many directors
and actors including Jiang Wen, Feng Xiaogang, and Chen Kaige. Currently
they have oral agreements. However, Feng Xiaogang has already signed a
film contract with her. Earlier due to script problem their collaboration
fell through. She admired this people's director a lot and felt that he
was very talented.

[FONT=Times][SIZE=7] wavecry.gif It really breaks my heart to hear that Joey Wong will not act again. I love Joey Wong and Brigitte Lin and they are in my opinion the best and most beautiful actresses and people in the world. If Brigitte or Joey actually star or even appear in a movie again I would be the first one to take a plane to Hong Kong or China or Taiwan just to see them even though i actually live in the US.

It is really sad that Joey retired as soon as she did. I mean she was only 26 years old when she retired in 1994. And at the time it was over such a trivial matter. I mean the tabloids and media just blew it way out of proportion. She and a married man fell in love but she would not be involve in the relationship unless the guy divorced his wife. So, naturally the guy divorced his wife. But as a result of this, Joey's popularity in Taiwain dropped so she retired.

Joey has had quite an outstanding career although her most famous performance was in A Chinese Ghost Story, she also has a lot of other great performances in movies like Swordsman 3: The East is Red, Green Snake, God of Gamblers, and Eagle Shooting Heroes.

But Joey has yet to win a single award for her acting talent and it is such a shame to see her retire. Like Brigitte Lin, even after years of retirement she is still incredibly beautiful. Anyone who has seen her last staring role in 2001's Peony Pavilion will know that although she is retired she is still a great actress and she is still as beautiful as ever and her eyes can still bring audiences to tears.

smilie.GIF I think it is such a shame that Joey does not want to be a part of the Entertainment circle, but i certainly understand her reasons.

Even in the heights of her career her talents as an actress were never really appreciated. Joey was best known for her Chinese Ghost Story role and filmakers and audiences just kept making her play that same role over and over again such as in Painted Skin, Fantasy Romance, the 1000 Beheaded.
If Joey was not playing those typical ghost roles, she would be playing cute girly roles with little room to really show her talents such as in A Hearty Response, City Hunter, The Big Score.
The absolute worst aspect of her career may have been the times Joey had to do really sexual or seductive roles in which often times she was portrayed as merely a sex object and/or she was put in topless or sexual scenes like in Green Snake, even the CHinese Ghost Stories, and Swordsman 3: East is Red. For example, I still cannot forget that awful scene from A Hearty Response where Joey was tortured and had most of her clothes torn off and almost raped, I was fighting the urge to cry and throw-up at the time.

Joey is a great actress and yet filmakers only utilized and exploited her beauty and innocence by having her only do cute or sexual roles. This explains why she never won any awards for her performances. wavecry.gif And I think it is such a damn shame.

wow...i always thought she was pretty but i didn't know that she retired for that reason...it sucks to be under the public's eye all the time...but she's probably happier now than when she was acting...

Li Bingbing, Joey Wong create Sept. movie romance

www.chinaview.cn 2005-09-07 09:01:46

BEIJING, Sept. 7 -- Shenzhen movie fans, particularly the sentimental female ones, have a reason to be excited this month, as two romantic love stories hit the city’s silver screens.

“Waiting Alone,” (《独自等待》) which will open Sept. 8, and “Beautiful Shanghai,” (《美丽上海》) which will be in theaters from Sept. 15, are both set in Shanghai. The popular Taiwanese actress Joey Wong (王祖贤) plays the leading role in “Beautiful Shanghai,” while the prominent mainland star Li Bingbing falls in love with another promising young actor Xia Yu in “Waiting Alone.”

Though “Beautiful Shanghai” boasts many big names, insiders feel that “Waiting Alone” will do well, on the back of enthusiastic performances from the young actors, a strong plot and great direction.

The director of “Waiting Alone” is Wu Shixian, famous for his accurate portrayal of human nature. The ambience of Shanghai is masterfully depicted in the film. The film shows the growing pains of a young man who is always dreaming about falling in love. While some humorous incidents centering around youngsters falling in love add some lively touches, the film also offers a lot of food for thought about the philosophy of life.

Having lived for years in Shanghai, the “Beautiful Shanghai” director Peng Xiaolian is no doubt cashing in on her unique understanding of the city in the movie. The movie is inspired by the ups and downs in the fortunes of a royal family, and emits a strong flavor of old Shanghai.

DOes anyone know if she is still acting? or any updated pics of her? she was the most beautiful girl in the late 80s
ngpossible
Joey has basically stopped acting because of all the newbies in the entertainment business. It's very difficult for people to maintain popularity when people are going for those most popular and best looking. Joey was my idol when I was young and I really liked her because I thought she was good looking. But now, Joey has gotten older. She therefore cannot compete with the younger ones.

I highly doubt Joey Wong is quiting the entertainment world permanently simply because there is a lot of newbies taking up space.

First and foremost, Hong Kong Cinema is in terrible shape and the newbies cannot do much to help hk cinema. These newbies might be fresh and pleasing to the eye, but cinema requries skills not just looks. These newbies can probably support a modeling or singing career but real acting takes a lot of hard work and talent.

If Joey was in fact worried about competition, she would have resurfaced earlier to kick off her career. She was only 26 when she retired and was still incredibly young and beautiful. But she chose to quit and lead a quiet life for almost a decade. She still has much of her natural acting talent and many friends in the enterainment field.

Joey has a face unlike any other, and a beauty that is uniquely her own. And even to this day, she still has her own unique beauty that is unmatched. She has not gained weight nor is she really that old today, so I really do not think her elegance or beauty can be put into question.

But Joey hasn't been doing anything lately. I haven't seen her do commercials, shows or have appearances on tv shows. If she wants to stay, she should do it now.

Joey is really beautiful. She's tall and has thick eye brows, an envy to most girls!
Still remember one of her movie where by she's a ghost wearing all white with long flowing hair hehe
vividwolf
she knew what was needed in the roles before she made the films. i think it's abit nasty to blame the filmakers when at the end of the day, she said yes to almost being raped, or having her clothes ripped off etc etc there is no exploitation
happy
awww...wish she didnt retire. shes a great actress and also pretty I think if she stayed she can still get popular again over some time.

She is very beautiful. I like her movie with Leslie very much. Its one of my favourite movie.

Wow! I didn't know she's 5'8". I'm impressed cause I heard girls weren't that tall back then and only recently cause of nutrients, etc. She's very beautiful and especially in the Chinese Ghost Story (is that the name?). Kinda miss seing her in movies. She was a great actress.

I found this forum when i searched for pics of Joey. She is really one of the most beautiful and innocent looking actresses in HK with a strong expression of feelings. That's why I love ACGS so much. She fascinated me and made eager to see more of her. Of course I felt very disappointed and even sad when I got aware that she retired. Can anybody tell me more about her ? Where does she live now ? What does she do ? Is she still active as actress in a theater ? I would really like to know more about her. Is there an email address to contact her ? Then I could write some personal lines to her. :-)

Joey has retired for several years. She also my most favourite actress. It is said that now she is living in Canada with her husband. She also acted in Fox Legend, Fractured follies, Hearty response, 100 ways to murder your wife (with Chow Yun Fat), Fanstasy Romance (with Tony Leung), Peony pavilion, many more great movies, hehe.

I love to see her again in the movies, she's very pretty. I love her in A Chinese Ghost Story. Never knew you sung songs.
