As we all know, these two share 3 things in common:

1) The movies are adapted from the books
2) Both of it belong to the fantasy genre (tho' Twilight leans more towards the romance)
3)Robert Pattinson acts in both movies. =)

So, the question now is, which do you prefer in terms of the book? Movie? Chemistry between characters?

Although I'm pretty obsessed with Twilight now, I'll have to say that Harry Potter wins hands down in terms of the book, the style of writing by JK Rowling compared to the teenage-like style of writing of Stephenie Meyer and HP movies are a better adaptation of the book compared to that of Twilight.

However, i think that the chemistry between the main characters in Twilight is more intense than the one in HP mainly because the main characters are lovers whereas in HP , the main characters are friends.

That's my opinion for now. What about yours?

P.S.: You're allowed to cristicise, but constructive ones only and also, please state your reasons as to which is better.
Love. Music.
I like HP more.
I hated the actress in Twilight so that kinda ruined it for me.
at least in HP the leads so a much better job.
Both skipped out alot of parts but in twilight it seems they tried way too hard to make it "modernized"
i mean "its call adrenaline google it." ok who talks like that?
and then "hold on spider monkey.." no.
in HP they just let it go and talked in the actual language of the book so thats so much better.
call me a nerd but i am realy into the HP series. and the movies havent dissappoint as badly as twilight.
♥hippo-holic♥
i like Harry Potter maybe its because ive been a fan ever since Sorcerer Stone.
i also like the main casts of HP more Dan & Emma while on Twilight i only like Robert.
so yah Harry Potter for me.
but both books are really good.
#1 priority
HARRY POTTER n_thumbdown.gif I prefered the movie ova book...
TWILIGHT infatuated.gif The books are soo much beta!! They skipped most of the stuff in the movie

so i guess that means...

(Sorry this is a long post)

First of all, you can’t say that both the HP and Twilight movies have those three things in common unless you’re being specific, since Robert Pattinson was only in HP: Goblet of Fire.

In terms of the books, even though I love Twilight (only the first book in the saga), I like and prefer the HP books more. JK Rowling is a very talented writer. She is able to write in a consistent manner in a span of 7 books. It’s amazing how she’s able to be keep track of all those details in all of her books. I think she’s a talented storyteller because she’s able to captivate a whole range of audience, not just limited to a certain group. People of all gender and age are able to enjoy the story. I think one of the things captivating about HP are the chemistry among the characters. You have the friendship among Ron, Hermione, and Harry. You have the “parental-like” relationship between Harry and Dumbledore, Harry and Sirius, Mrs. Weasley and her kids and Harry, etc. It’s one of the things that worked really well in the books. Also, the majority of the characters are well-developed, so they’re not one-dimensional.

I think Stephenie Meyer is a very good storyteller, but she is not a very good writer. Her books are filled with in plot holes and grammatical errors. Plus, her over usage of words like chagrin, winced, and dazzle… well she could have benefited from using a thesaurus. I find her very wordy also, in her usage of adjectives. Chemistry wise, you can say that Edward and Bella’s bond was very intense and strong. The bond amongst the Cullen clan was also very strong. However, Stephenie Meyer failed in character development department. I feel like it’s something she can work on a bit better. I just find some stuff very inconsistent. Bella can’t stand the smell of blood, but in Breaking Dawn, she’s suddenly able to drink blood out of a sippy cup? Jacob and the pack are NOT wolves, but they’re “shape-shifters,” and also the whole chromosome thing, and the idea of vampire venom as sperm. Even if it’s “just a story,” there has to be some logical sense to it. I have problems with her answers to her FAQs, and how she just brushes away the criticisms with answers like “I’m not a biology major” or how there’s going to be a “Rob effect” for the book (referring to how initially people didn’t want Rob to be Edward, but they ended up loving him.) I think this saga only appeals to a selected audience, which is a reason why it won’t be as big as the Harry Potter books.

As for the movies, I know very well that not all film adaptations of books turn out well. However, there have been good film adaptations of books in the past, like Sense and Sensibility (and Pride and Prejudice [Colin Firth A&E version], or Jane Eyre [BBC 2006 version], though these two are television series). Even though I only liked the first Harry Potter movie, and didn’t care for the rest, I still think overall, the Harry Potter films are much much much better than the Twilight films. Yes, there is a huge sum difference in budgets between the Harry Potter films and Twilight, but I personally don’t consider that a valid excuse. You can make a crappy film on a high budget, and a good film on a low budget. They’re called Indie movies. Twilight suffered from a poor script, poor directing, and lackluster acting. There was seriously more chemistry amongst the Fork High School crowd (Jessica, Mike, Eric, Angela, etc.) than Rob and Kristen, and even among the Cullens. Perhaps it’s because their onscreen time was limited. I don’t know. I love the cast chemistry in Harry Potter. I personally can’t stand Emma Watson, but her, Daniel Radcliffe, and Rupert Grint have great chemistry. I love the other actors and actresses also, like Dame Maggie Smith, Alan Rickman, and the guys who play Fred and George. The supporting characters may not have that much screen time, but at least they make a lasting impression. Both Harry Potter and Twilight suffered from a case of “cutting too much from the books.” My main criticism with HP is that they cut so much from the book. But at least they were able to make it flow well. Twilight included most of the “famous” lines from the book, but the script was poorly written because there was no flow. The scenes didn’t connect. It was like you jump from one scene to the next. People go to see it without reading the book beforehand may get confused. HP, on the other hand, does a better job at this. Yes, there are people who may also get confused, but they would probably have a better understand of the movie than those who saw Twilight.

Don’t get me wrong. I loved HP and Twilight. Each has their strong and weak points. But I have to say, I prefer HP over Twilight in terms of books and movies. Twilight as a movie was very disappointing, and I had really really low expectations right before I went in to see it. I even tried thinking of it as just a movie, and not related to the book. Even then, it was still a bad movie.

Harry Potter by FAR.
Oh my goodness, I could go into GREAT LENGTH discussing how much better HP books and movies are over twilight's both.

Stephanie Meyer writes fan fiction. Seriously, she didn't create a 'vampire world', just made a story line with good guys, their rivals and bad guys. Oh, and of course a love story!! (why else do you think it got so popular? whistle.gif) and dropped characters in it. It was all made so coincidental that I had trouble believing it. Oh, so Bella moves into this new town and meets a vampire who coincidentally was attracted to her and a van coincidentally was almost smashing into her and the vampire saved her and oh they later fall in love. The books weren't even that tied together, entwined together to make it a full story. It was like, first book, bella and edward meet, fall in love. Second, Bella and Edward break up, get back together, blah blah blah.

JK Rowling created an entire magical WORLD. Wizards, animagus, death eaters, dementors, etc. She even invented an whole new sport!!! At least we get full insight as to WHY Harry was chosen (prophecy made, Voldemort turns up, parents died to save him, voldemort couldn't kill him). She also has a very dry and humorous style of writing that I just smiled reading some parts that weren't actually supposed to be funny.

The supporting characters in the HP books aren't even supporting characters. Unlike the Twilight series, were supporting characters are just like, people in the school, Bella's friends whom you don't even get to know A BIT, cos Stephanie Meyer doesn't even bother trying to write out their characters. In HP you know so much about people like Neville, Lupin, Peter Pettigrew and many many others.

Think the baseball scene of the twilight movie was cool?? HP's qudditch scenes beat it FLAT. The acting was superb by every single actor in the HP films. Twilight's was inconsistent, but I think the main problem lies with the fact that the cast has very little acting experience. Though I don't think that is a suitable excuse, because the first HP film was superb even with inexperienced main characters. Don't even get me started on the directing. I just thank God that they're changing the director.

Another main reason why I much preferred Harry Potter over twilight were the main characters. BELLA JUST IRKS ME SO DANG MUCH. She is so selfish and weak that I don't think she even deserves to be called the heroine. Sure, I didn't like Harry so much (particularly in the last few books where he keeps blowing up and you just want to shout at him), at least he was real, he was courageous, and he was willing to sacrifice love in order for much more important tasks. Compared to *someone* who just MOPED around when her lover left her.
Nothing turns me off a story faster than characters who irrates me and aren't real.

I agree with most of the posts here. I remember all my friends telling me to read twilight and that it's the best book ever. I began it with high expectation but was so disappointed by it... the overall book didn't even get interesting until chapter 17 when James came in. Edward and Bella's love was pretty shallow. He likes her blood and she's attracted to his amazingly handsome face... geez, they barely went through anything together before they were head over heels with each other... and i was so annoyed at Bella. She basically ditched all her friends from Forks after meeting Edward. and then there were those long paragraphs just pureply describing how good looking Edward is. Okay, we get the point. He's handsome. Move on! Not to mention that Stephanie Meyer's writing style isn't all that great, which made it harder to read. Twilight is overhyped where I live. Almost every girl I know is in love with Edward Cullen. I think he's one of the reason why most people love the book series so much.

Twilight just can't be compared to the Harry Potter series. J.K. Rowling spent years plotting the story. Every detail from the last book can be related to the first book. All the characters are more developed and real whereas Twilight's characters are really one-dimensional.
iBulu
HARRY POTTER!! I'm sorry, but I hate Twilight... The whole thing on Twilight is like being in love with a vampire... I'm mean, seriously? Harry Potter's storyline is so much more intricate and intense. There's also some love in Harry Potter, but it's mainly based on the entire magical world mixed in with some nonmagical stuff while Twilight is just about being in love with a vampire... Don't get me wrong, I love romance novels and movies, but Harry Potter is soo much better!!
IKAAA.is.da.neym.
i love these two but nothing could beat harry potter for me.. harry potter is the best fan fiction i had ever seen and im still waiting for a fan fic that could beat this one up.. but nothing had still arrived.. hohoho~~ griffindor is still the winner clapping.gif
veronica_s2
They don't compare. The evidence is in the writing itself, JK Rowling outshines SM by a mile.
Then again, Twilight is SM's first novel, so you can't expect it to be brilliant.

Harry Potter is about good versus evil. Twilight is essentially a love story. The only thing they really have in common is that Harry Potter is set in the supernatural world and Twilight contains supernatural elements in the story, i.e. vampires.

I love both series though. They're books I'd read to my children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren when I get older smile.gif

i shall ans this question by question...i have to say..i've oni read twilight and new moon...oni chap 1 of eclipse frm steph's site so tat dun count....whereares HP i've read all 7 bks...

which do you prefer in terms of the book?
tho i'm like at the peak of my twilight fever..i still have to say..i prefer HP bks at the end of the day...tho HP sucks at the romance department..haha.. but still..the bk's more abt HP's harrowing adventures and all..and guess tat's loads more exciting then the persistence into wanting to turn into a vampire...XD

Movie?
TWILIGHT...lol... i think it's cos i knew the potter bks so well my expectations were SO SO SO high for them.. i was greatly disappointed with almost every movie...lol...twilight on the other hand...well it still disappointed me..the meadow scene especially..but i wasn't disapointed as much..i think rob made up a lot for tat..XD ........

Chemistry between characters?
well...romance chem..in HP..nothing much can be said abt tat..unless we're to discus mr and mrs weasley, or aunt petunia and uncle vernon!..lol..so i guess rob-kirsten wins...family wise..the cullen family compared to the weasley family....i guess the weasley family look more of a one unit..tho the cullen family are all "we got ur back" and all...there's still something abt em tat's not as "flowy"..maybe it's the emphasis of the pairs..teh alice-jasper lairing, emmett-rosalie and carlisle-esme coupling..i dunno...lol...

I don't know how people dare to compare HP with Twilight.

With HP, JKR brought a whole generation of kids back into reading. She created a whole new world filled with magic, hope, good vs evil etc. Before Twilight and it's fangirls came along, where else would you find millions young and old waiting outside hours before a store open just so they can get it's hands on the latest HP and then devouring it like hotcakes?

Without all the hype over HP thus making the young adults and supernatural genre popular, Twilight wouldn't even exist.
Granted, JKR sucks at the romance department and I am still stinging about the whole Ginny/Harry because everyone knew that Hermione and Harry was supposed to be together!

Movie wise, I still pick HP. Yes, they did cut a lot of it out from the books, but that is expected, I mean have you seen how thick those books are. If they had included everything from the books, the movie would probably be the length of 4 hours or so.

I've seen so posters and trailers of Twilight, and honesty, the two main characters look stone.

That's my two cents anyways.

self_hypnosis
O.M.G. ... Twilight is SO SO SO overrated. Book AND movie wise.
The book - Stephanie Meyer's writing skills cannot be compared to JKR. She's actually a pretty crap author ... it's her storyline that appeals. It's not horrible, but seriously it's not outstanding. What is the hype? Edward Cullen? ... =.=" Am I the only one who isn't obsessed like the rest of the female population? Lol ... I hope it's not just me ...
The movie - I regret watching the movie, cos it's made me dislike the book even more. Poor acting and delivery of storyline.
Yeah, girls that have Edward Cullen all over the msn nick names and signatures make me sick, no offense.
weird&short
Well to me
Both:
Are over hyped
Got people reading which isn't a bad thing
XCGunners
I don't think both of this is good. I just dont get what they want to do in twilight. First part of the movies is really boring. For harry potter, well will never like their story at all.
choc_tomo
stephanie meyers can't write half as decently as jk rowling.

PLUS. the storyline of twilight is sooo cheesy. that love story is only suitable for girls under 15.
sweetenedsam
I find it stupid (no offense) that people keep on comparing these completely different series.
But then, I guess it's because both of them are on the mega-popular level right now.

I'd say HARRY POTTER hands down. As much as I enjoy reading about Edward Cullen's golden eyes and his beautiful figure and personality blahblah, I think Meyer's writing is a lot more amateur and the plot isn't wrapped together so well. Twilight is just, what I would say, my guilty pleasure (: Honestly without Edward, Twilight would be nothing. It's just a simple lovestory about the infatuation between two people.

HP is definitely a masterpiece. It talks about soo many things, from love to friendship to magic to evil to greed to-- the list is endless. When you're finished with reading Deathy Hallows, you end up all breathless because the way she wrapped up the whole series is simply amazing. All the little things that kept you hanging from Sorcerer's Stone to the Half Blood Prince was explained, and gosh, idk how to explain it.
suki.L
I agree HP is definately way better than Twilight. JK Rowling's writing style is so much better and detailed than Stephanie Meyers. As much as I love Twilight, the HP books win by a landslide. The movies were also adapted much better than Twilight. I found that in Twilight the movie was really weird in some points and some scenes didn't transition very well. The chemistry between Bella and Edward was reallly good though. I like Twilight because of Edward and Robert Pattinson. smile.gif

My vote goes to Harry Potter anyday. I actually wrote an opinion piece for my friends. Here's a bit of it.

TWILIGHT

01: CHARACTERS
BELLA SWAN
Bella is introduced as a 17 year old moving from the city, Phoenix, to Forks. Since Twilight is written in first person, readers see the story through her eyes and relate to her. Personally, I don’t think I can ever relate to someone so stupid and shallow. How is she stupid? A great example is how she was nearly raped. It’s established that she came from a place with a large population – a city person, a city girl. However, she wanders around in an unknown and unfamiliar place, alone, at night. I’m younger than Bella and I know that doing that is being completely stupid and simply asking for trouble. I guess that’s why she’s always the damsel in distress; and damsels in distress aren’t my thing, they’re simply annoying.

The reason why Bella is shallow? Read a couple of pages and you’ll know. She continuously describes Edward. Any chance possible, she will describe some feature. Really, she’s completely obsessive. After Edward came into her life, she threw away her family, friends, education etc. She didn’t care, as long as she had Edward. Her life revolved around him. She became dependent on him. Love can make one do stupid things, yes, I know that. But seriously, even if I was “unconditionally and irrevocably” in love, I would never throw away my family and friends. NEVER. The moment I do, I’ll know that I’m in an unhealthy and unbalanced relationship. And that is exactly what Bella has. So really, I can never relate to Bella. NEVER.

EDWARD CULLEN
Edward Cullen is described as the most beautiful and handsome person vampire. He’s the perfect male protagonist, quite possibly the perfect hero. He’s the one that every girl loves after reading Twilight. Heck, there’s even a cult for him. Apart from his “godly” features, I don’t find him appealing at all. I actually find him quite scary and hard to believe that he’s the perfect male protagonist, or hero for that matter. He’s selfish. He knows that he’s dangerous for Bella, especially since she is so irresistible, but he stays with her. He could lose control and kill her at any given time, but, he still doesn’t leave her.

For someone who’s been alive for so long, he seems quite immature. For starters, why does he act so much like a teenager when he’s so old? He tells Bella about a secret that he’s supposed to protect. You find out in the second book that it’s a law to hide your real identity, but no, Edward spills the beans to Bella in a matter of seconds. Shouldn’t he be more rational? Hell, shouldn’t he be like Dumbledore? They’re both pretty old, and the older you are, the more experienced and knowledgeable you are. Edward surely doesn’t display that.

He’s controlling, and can possibly be an abuser. He doesn’t allow Bella to do anything she wants. For example, when Bella wanted to visit Jacob, Edward says he will use physical force to stop her by stating, “I’ll stop you”. It’s not his decision on who Bella can and can not associate with. He’s also pretty bipolar if you ask me (thank you DBSK for teaching me this word). His mood swings are insane and extreme. One minute he’s serious, the next he’s laughing and smiles his “crooked smile”, dazzling people. The main reason why I’m so scared of him is that he watches Bella sleep. He entered her room and simply watches her sleep; before they got to know each other. This is what you call a stalker. It’s not romantic, it’s scary and creepy.

OTHER CHARACTERS
In my opinion, the other characters in the saga are like the ones discussed above, one dimensional and flat. They stay the same throughout the whole saga and nothing about them changes, at all; especially the vampires. My favourite character would probably be Jacob. Yes, not Edward, but Jacob.

02: RELATIONSHIPS
Twilight is essentially a love story between a vampire and a human, but really, I don’t understand their relationship at all. I really can't understand their "love". The reason why Bella loves Edward is because he is "hot" and "godly". As for Edward, he loves Bella because she smells good and probably interested as to why he can't read her mind. Also, I can’t find much development of their love. It just happened so suddenly. It was like BAM and they’re in love. I find that hard to accept. Therefore, to me, their relationship is based on infatuation and lust.

HARRY POTTER

01: CHARACTERS
HARRY POTTER
We meet Harry at the age of 1, having lost both his parents and are sent to live with his aunty; the only blood relative he has left. After, we meet him again at the age of 11, having found out that he is actually a wizard. There, we begin our journey with this little boy, the one who lived. Throughout the series, we are with him as he learns the truth behind his parent’s death. We are there to witness how he struggles to defeat Voldemort, how he made mistakes, how he loses everyone close to him; one by one. He expresses numerous emotions, of anger, happiness, stubbornness, sorrow, bravery, courage etc. We see him continuously change as he gains more experience of life, symbolising that he is indeed only human. This makes him seem so real, and it gives readers the sense that they’re “growing up” with Harry. Sure, we all knew that he was going to win in the end, but who would have guessed the numerous traumatic circumstances he would find himself in, one after another. Who would have guessed that this boy was prepared to sacrifice himself for the future of man-kind; whether they were magical people or simply Muggles? I don’t really need to describe Harry; you’ve all seen the movies or at least heard the Harry Potter fans talk about him. However, the main reason why I don’t need to describe him is because, like I said, he seems so “human”. We’re all humans and we can relate to him, therefore, no explanations are really needed.

OTHER CHARACTERS
Every single character in the series is dynamic and complex like a human. You witness their changes, their mistakes and understand how they came to be. For example: Dumbledore, Snape and Voldemort. Dumbledore: the grandfather figure in the series. The one who was nearly always right, the wise one. His past was simply amazing. You learn about his family and what became of them. How that changed his life and how he regrets it everyday that he lives. Snape: the one everyone loved to hate. We learn about his past, his love for Lily, the truth. He became a respected and loved character, but it was all too late. Voldemort: the antagonist. The amount of detail you learn about him is simply amazing. The complexity of his past makes you sympathise for him. Even characters you think are simply useless or hold no important role plays a special part in the series. Like Neville Longbottom. Who would have thought that the prophecy could have meant him? Also, who would have imagined that he could help with the destroying of the Horcrux? So really, all the characters in Harry Potter played a vital role that was needed to keep the series alive.

02: RELATIONSHIP
There are several love relationships in the series, including that of Harry and Ginny. Although romance was quite weak in Harry Potter, I don’t mind since the story isn’t about Harry’s love life. What I admired in Harry with his relationship was that he knew his presence was a danger to Ginny. So he decided to break it off; even if it may cause him heartache. He chose to protect her than put her in a dangerous situation where her life could easily be endangered by Voldemort. I think the reason behind this decision was because he was well aware of what Voldemort was capable of. After all, his parents were killed by Voldemort.

There are countless relationships in Harry Potter, each one different from one another. Take Harry and Sirius for example. Harry finally had a person that was closest to a father figure. The strong connection that they had was undeniable, especially after Harry saved him from the Dementor's Kiss. This was proven once again when Voldemort took advantage of their relationship. However, Harry lost Sirius right before they could finally be a proper family, something that Harry always yearned for. Readers are so aware of the development of their relationship that when Sirius died, they couldn’t help but sympathise for Harry. Therefore, they would also understand the emotions of anger that Harry felt soon after and the need to avenge for his godfather. Their relationship was built on trust that developed into love.

I was disappointed with the pairing of Harry & Ginny. It felt as if they paired up in the last minute.

Oh ...dumbledore gay??where did that come from.

Lack of extra story behind - Snape's feelings towards Harry ... Towards the end he really cared for Harry?

--- Actually these things made me dislike H.P

As for twilight - I've only seen the movie
lol I'm kinda biased as Twilight is loosely based on ''Pride & Prejudice'' - and i love that book!! lol

Lack of extra story behind - Snape's feelings towards Harry ... Towards the end he really cared for Harry?

Well the POV in the Harry Potter is technically first person. I know it doesn't go "I went to the washroom" or whatever but everything written in the books is based on Harry's opinions or thoughts. So it makes sense that Harry thinks Snape is evil and there is no "real truth" to Snape's attitude towards him.
Aspire
Twilight enticed me only for a short period. I find the writing a little too blant for my taste. It was like reading a teenage novel meant for the understanding of a 12-year-old. Plus, the books don't elaborate properly on many of the details that could help the story develop nicely, so I find it an ambiguity to decipher what they actually want to convey.

The movie was poorly made. I was thankful because I read the book before going to the theater, otherwise I would have wrecked the ticket counter asking for a refund (Haha just kidding). I tried to watch the movie as a person who has not read Twilight, and I find it difficult to understand. Yes, I am glad that they invited the director of The Golden Compass to film the next movie. At least that makes me having a more hopeful expectation.

I prefer JK Rowling's writing because of her variety in vocabulary usage and extraordinary descriptions of the stories. When I read the Harry Potter books I feel like I could actually drift into JK Rowling's imagination, seeing what she intends to let us see. Plus, I know she made a lot of researches and efforts to come out with bits in her stories. Many of the character names, spells, backgrounds are derived from actual happenings in reality. For example, Sirius' name is based on the constellation known as the "Dog Star" while Black reflects the colour of Sirius' dog appearance. Also, Diagon Alley is a play on the word "diagonally" because the alley doesn't run straight. Knockturn Alley is a play on the word "nocturnally", that explains why the alley is always visited by dark wizards who are up to no good. Other than these, I have read that most of the names she creatively made up have insightful meanings as well, which is why I admire her for not just simply writing a story without preparation.

The relationships between the characters are well-developed, in my opinion. You have Hermione started out disliking Ron and later on falling in like with him, unlike Edward and Bella, who fell for each other without even knowing each other that much. And yet they get to end up together in the end. Things moved on too fast to be believed. In Harry Potter, although Harry and Hermione share a strong bond, their love remains as love between two friends only, and nothing more. Twilight stories are too mushy for people like me. It was impossible for boys to stay just friends with girls. Though I like the Cullen vampires, but I don't know why all of them have to be paired up together. Bella's friends are the same, with her two female friends (I forgot their names) being together with Eric and Mike. Like there is no such thing as "single"? Yes, I know that it's a romance story, but does it have to go to the extend where nobody is left alone?

As for the Harry Potter movies, they deteriorate as they go on. I think it's because the stories are getting longer and more complicated, that's why it would be troublesome for them to translate all of the things from the books into the movies. They have to leave out some insignificant events so the movie could last not longer than, perhaps, three hours. I can empathise, because I certainly wouldn't want to sit in front of the big screen for a six-hour movie (The Goblet of Fire is potentially being like this), even if it means that the movie will be more understandable.

Book-wise

TWILIGHT: I have to agree with how someone mentioned that Stephanie Meyer did not write a novel. She wrote a fan fiction. Her phrasing, vocabulary, plot and character development were ghastly. I read the first three books hoping that the next one will be better than the other plus i was really bored at that time. I did not have the patience to read the fourth book and i did not really want to know what happens next. You can pretty much guess what will happen next. The series was predictable and unoriginal. When people ask me about the novel. I laugh and say its pretty much stupid. How can one girl see a drop dead gorgeous guy, fall in love with him, find out he's a vampire, does not even act surprised and asks him to make her a vampire. All in the span of less than a year. Its pretty much shallow and superficial. I don't understand how fans say that SM created a world of her own. To put it in my cousin's words. The author is like a stay-at-home mom who did not have anything to do, decided to write a novel. Very amateur. Character wise. Come on. Bella's a dork. Not even a lovable one. You hate her because she has absolutely no personality. She is unable to do anything except plead with Edward to make her a vampire. Edward has no backbone. Despite all the romantic ways he profess his love for Bella, he'd not even lovable. Actually, they're a perfect match. No depth at all. It was like reading Sweet Valley books except i enjoyed those more.

HARRY POTTER: I would like to compare this series with Tolkien's LOTR. That's a much better debate. *Though Tolkien might win that one* Rowling's craft is too good to be even on the same paragraph as Meyer's. HP is an entirely different world. My little brother actually believes in Hogwarts and wants to go study there. Each character has a history, a background, a reason for their actions whether its revenge, love, ambition or friendship. The depth of the relationships of the characters actually exists in the real world. One feels the Harry's anger, Ron's insecurity, Sirius' frustration and Dumbledore's need for good to triumph. What makes all these characters so good is that we see a little bit of ourselves in each one. And deep inside, no matter how old we are, we do wish we had someone like Dumbledore as our principal, or we met someone like Fred and George. The novel has humor, drama, adventure and you feel it all in every chapter. Who didn't gasp when the very first chapter of the last novel dealt with a murder. We all had to read each and every word carefully, sometimes twice because the mystery, the solution just might be in those words. We were kept guessing. We had debates. We reread each book and we tried to find out what the last horcrux was wishing to God that it wasn't Harry. Rowling created a world, a complete one, with all the creatures, sports, governement, literature and even folk tales. Pretty much the same way Tolkien made us believe in Middle Earth, Rowling made us believe that wizards live around us.

movie-wise
C'mon! The twilight movie had poor script, poor acting and what little magic the novel had, was lost in the creation of the film. I practically laughed out loud when Edward uttered "You're my life now Bella" or "You're my favorite brand of heroin". I know those were in the novel but no one can actually say those things and get away with it. Although, some said that they loved the movie then were completely disapointed when they tried to read the book. HP was not an excellent movie. They do have great supporting casts but i have to admit that Radcliffe was as bad as Pattinson on the first movie. Although the main difference is Radcliffe actually looked like the HP that we had in our minds. Casting was great in HP and i think that's what made the difference. All the characters that we imagined truly came alive with the actors. They were what we had in our minds (excpet Lupin, i really thought he'd be handsome). But the movie was nothing compared to the novels. The depth of the mystery of the books were not even touched in the movie.

yuck..i dont know why people like twilight so much..hahah

Though I like the book of Twilight but then when it got to New Moon and the rest
I got bored >.<
Disappointed because of the movie ^^
But Harry Potter is not my type at all
I still go for Twilight :]
salientblue_viel0912
i think the greater advantage of twilight is that it adapts well with teenage audiences... you know romance and all... like its a whole package in one.....

and harry potter is a novel filled with mysterious happenings that makes you just want to jump up and down... and harry potter never dies...... but i think the story is sort of one sided only... which i find it quite uninteresting... its all about the same person.

i cant really choose tho. lol

Ima go with HP movies and TW books even though I read neither. I"ve seen Twilight and I thought it was wack. Harry Potter was neat.
16_ASiAN-iSH!
I prefer Twilight books!:D

The story moved me.:]

I really love how Stephenie Meyer described Edward in the book, he`s so hot. Lol.:]

Phew, I thought I was the only one out there bashing on Twilight and so not on the Edward Cullen bandwagon.

I don't know about everyone else, but here in Melbourne, the minute Twilight and Breaking Dawn were promoted "soon to be released". My freaking holy gosh. It was like a plague hit us, worse than the breaking out of SARS (exaggerated just a tad ;D), it was the freaking "Edward is so damn freaking hot" - disease. Everyone was reading the first three books before the final chapter came out. And O-M-G-S-H, the minute Breaking Dawn was released, I swear, every single student in my school could be seen either carrying the book underneath their textbooks on their way to class, or could be seen secretly reading it on the first day, in class. My eyes must have rolled and twitched about a hundred times everytime the words "Breaking Dawn" passed my eyes.

Book Wise:
Twilight - yes I know is a TEENAGE romance, but if you compare it to Harry Potter, ORIGINALLY this was aimed at CHILDREN, but as the story progressed, the genre targetted a more adolescent and mature audience, however, people did not really notice, cause people still remember Harry as the 12yr old entering Hogwarts. And when you saw him grow up like til 16, it was like watching a child grow up in real life. This is here is the HUGE and most important difference between the two series. Character development is really important to me. Storyline is too, but the characters are living the life, and if the actual character is so poorly made, the story can't possibly make up for it.

When Bella is introduced, yeah she was a city girl and that was pretty much it. As you read on - you come to find, Bella is EXTREMELY annoying with her obsessiveness towards Edward. The guy is good looking (some say 'godly'), the dream guy of supposedly every girl's fantasy. Okay, to me, you could describe that in let's say one page maximum. I read books to see charcater and storyline development - EVENTS occurring. I don't want to sit there to read pages and pages of desccriptive words about the protagonist's features.
Book two. Oh hell. We know the girl is depressed and basically a walking zombie, okay we feel that, but reading that book turns the READER into one as well. ==" Comment done.
Book three. Back to Bella and Edward (yay for many fans! whoop-de-doo, more lovey dovey stuff) Honestly, you know basically this was pretty much sexual for me. Not that they did anything, but the whole book basically revolved around Bella wanted a 'deeper' bond with Edward, and Edward just wanted to marry the girl. Usually that's the other way around. But who knew, 'it's vampires'.
I so have to agree on the comment about Meyers writing a fanfiction . Because frankly, Harry Potter really just makes you feel as if you've just stepped into a whole new MAGICAL world. Twilight, gees, it just feels as if the story is based in my backyard. The best Meyers did to describe 'vampire world' was "dark and gloomy clouds to block out the sun". Even when they went to Italy, well whichever European country it was. Honestly, how can you NOT create a vivid picture here for the readerm it's one of the places with a long and detailed history. Instead all we got were more comments on the Volturri clan and their looks. Nothing to set the scene and feel of it.
Fourth book? Major bomb for the ending, talk about total BOMB for the climatic point.

I know both booksare fiction, but seriusly the main plot for Twilight indeed revolved around the two protagonists falling in love (the whole point) but, did she have to make it so R&J style? Harry Potter, this is A COMPLETELY different world - a complete fantasy, and yet when it comes to love and friendship, it is so much more REALISTIC. Twilight was set in the MODERN day world, and yet, the whole thing is just unbelieveable. You have to be completely accepting of everything to be even remotely interested in it.

Movie wise: I think we all agree, Twilight lacked in all areas required to make even a decent movie. So twilight = failure. My money went down the drain. You know, I wasn't expecting it to be good, because mose book adapted movies are NEVER good. But this was, I cringe remembering that experience. I sat there and basically made stupid comments/noises throughout the whole entire movie. The acting made me wonder, how on earth the people in charge of casting still have their jobs. Honestly, Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson, were so much younger when they started filming the first movie. And they did 10 times better at playing their character and showing the chemistry between themselves than Edward and Bella.

My two cents.

EDIT: because this is just a whole mumble jumble, so you might not see which one I voted for:
HARRY POTTER ALL THE WAY!

o___o YES! That was exactly the same for me (I'm also a Melbournian). Every girl was reading the book and obsessing over Edward. I still understand why people like him so much. Sure, he's handsome and all, but he's also immature, controlling, bipolar and a stalker to top it all off. And I can't stand it when people assume I'm on the Edward bandwagon because I'm a teenager >_>"

I've finally seen the movie, and well, I was quite disappointed. There's wasn't enough chemistry between the main. Also, I felt Robert did a better job as Cedric than as Edward.
tonyliu1992
i didnt like twlight as much as i didnt read the book and i thought it was a bit random. Harry potter was really enjoyable until 4th or 5th movie where it was just ....stale and rushed on a bit
BingBANGbOoM
okey , I have something to put in on this chat. biggrin.gif
I agree with many of you that Twillight is a very very good and wonderful movie, and Edward is very very veeery cute (A)

but please let me remind you that this is Harry Potter we are talking about , it's the best ever.
it's historic and everything.
You ask me , you can't replace Harry Potter.
A vampire movie like Twillight , it can be replaced.
But not Harry Potter, nono.. but that is only what I think (:
Don't missunderstand me , I totally love Twillight . I can't figure out who's the best of them two (A) <33 xoxo
darkboyz
Well you can't really compare both as they kinda from different genre. HP is more to children's fantasy while twilight is more to romantic part. I would prefer HP over twi though
fungyiluv
both! i think both is good, but twilight is like for romantic people so..'', but anyway both is good!
n0-tym3-qu3st
I agree it's a total different genre between HP and Tw. Should you compare Edward & Cedric? idk. But I thought Cedric was way better than Edward and it's not because the characters or acting. Something just tells me Cedric is better than Edward. haha
-xtlover-
I can't compare the both like half the everyone says they have a different genre. HP is about wizards and Twilight is about vampires and werewolfs. In terms of what i like i will answer both.
narutov2
man i dunno why everyone get soooo worked up when it comes to these two movies, i mean i heard twilight was stupid, and when i watch harry potter i get tired. I guess i am just into marvel and Dc too much
elanation
i prefer HP over Twilight since i'm not really into love stories... plus i find HP much more mentally stimulating since the plot is magical, the readers are left to imagine most scenes and events from the book.

as for the movie version, well, we all know how movie rendition ruins the book version. but in this category, i choose twilight. it was a much closer remake compared to HP (which was mutilated by the script-writers and movie producers who always leave out the good parts of the book).
Junvy
I like both?

But I prefer Harry Potter more, truthfully. In terms of movie or book. It is very interesting and the way the director filmed for the movie is much better than Twilight. The graphics of the dragon-battle and everything was good. The book is totally irresistable. The first time I read the book(Philosopher Stone), I read it thrice in a night. I was only 11 when I first picked up the book and the story still stucked in my mind. The first time I watch the movie, there wasn't any moments I looked around the theatre and allow my mind to wonder off because I was totally glued to the screen.

Twilight, on the other hand, is much better when you read the book. The movie was good because of Robert Pattinson? His facial expressions amuse me, I'm a fan of his anyway, lol. But certain parts of the movie is so boring that you could have fallen asleep. Even though I watched it thrice, all was because of the male lead? Lol. I do love the book like crazy though. It's fabulous. It leads to imagine a lot, the scenes of Edward & Bella and everything. The way Stephanie Meyer wrote it brought you into another world of yours when you finished the book. You start to wonder if there is a Edward Cullen or a Bella Swan or Jacob/Jake.

But ah, I do love both. I watch the movies over and over again. Hahaha.
little_a
i like HP more cuz Twilight is kind of not that interesting...i dont have a liking in Vampires and i'm nor a romance type of person, HP well i love their accent!! and it's very interesting and not romance - y
Tiffiany_45
My answer is Harry Potter on both counts!

The Harry Potter books are so much better because they're so much more in depth, thought out, researched, eloquent. The writing itself is so much more engaging and significantly smarter. I agree with InitialE when she said that Stephanie Meyer wrote a fanfiction when she wrote the Twilight series.

However, I definitely recommend The Host! It was one of my favorite books of last year. It was complex, deep, and well written. I was amazed by how good The Host is compared to the Twilight saga.

~~~~~
As for the movies... Did you watch the Twilight movie? It shows you what an art adaptation is. That screenplay was SO true to the book, but it just didn't work at all. The acting, special effects, directing, everything was terrible about that movie.
Now, the HP movies might dumb down the plot from the books and they cut out A LOT, but the HP films never fail to be entertaining and the quality of the acting and story just gets better every film. Daniel is becoming a fantastic actor and brings SO MUCH to the role of Harry.
HP gets the budget that Twilight should have had. I think the Twilight movie would have been SO MUCH better with a bigger budget and better director.
For me, i dont want comparing the two books/movies.
i know they are really different from each other. all just fiction.
i like fiction. mostly i read fiction books. i've been a HP fan. now also a twilight fan.
i do like both a lot.
HP has a lot of adventures. i like JK Rowling wrote the stories. the movies were okay since i dont remember much about the book when i watch the movies. hehe
HP was unique talking about magic,wizards etc. it was the first fiction i've read and liked a lot.
While twilight was a typical/weird love story which caught my attention. cause i've never read any books like that. it was different for me. im dont know much how you can say a book is a 'good book'. for me twilight was great. i just love the story. different from what i expected. though i was also disappointed with the movie twilight. of course movie is different from the book. i just appreciate everything they made about twilight.
shellstah__
I wonder if people failed to notice that Edward kills, disembodies and does cannibalism to that girl Victoria in front of his girlfriend.
No wonder girls can't find their Edward Cullen. How many people do you see doing that everyday?
*.marshmalloww
okay, the more hype there is about Twilight, the more I find myself disliking it. And I agree, the Team Edward, Team Jacob stuff...etc etc is really gay too. And goodness, just as I'm writing this, there's an ad on the bottom of this forum talking about TWILIGHT Merchandise with some t-shirt with Edward's head on it? No offense, but I'd NEVER get caught wearing something that ugly. And advertising Robert Pattinson's head on my body. =="
People are getting infatuated over NOTHING.
Though I really hate how Ginny and Harry are paired up in the HP for NO damn reason at ALL.....I say I would still like it more than Twilight. Cuz Twilight is just absolute too fictional and unrealisitic. Even my English teacher wouldn't count it was a book. (ROFL, he says the whole saga would count as one book if we chose to read it for reading logs)
JK Rowling's writing is definitely lots better than Stephenie's.....there's actually descriptions and everything is described well. I find it well said that JK Rowling actually created her own world in her words.
As for the movies, still Harry Potter. Twilight....other than some parts being funny, everything else was just bleh. And the ending was crap. AND THE ACTING...GOODNESS! That was the first thing I noticed in the TRAILER alone. Seriously, Kristen Stewart AND Robert's acting is like O_O. The dialogue that they say have no emotion at all. I remember saying this numerous times, but phrases that they say that are supposed to be all full of emotion....are said with no expression at all.
So Harry Potter > Twilight
Just sharing a quote from Stephen King:
QUOTE
Both Rowling and Meyer, they’re speaking directly to young people. ... The real difference is that Jo Rowling is a terrific writer and Stephenie Meyer can’t write worth a darn. She’s not very good."
I have to say I absolutely agree.
Tiffiany_45
HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! When did Stephen King write that?! That is crazy hilarious.
It sucks to have something written like that about you by a writer though. I guess the truth always hurts the worst.
I actually had the Twilight/HP debate while on a teadmill before my trekking class yesterday. I thought it was extremely hilarious, esp since the girl had never read the HP books but I was just going off on how much better they were! Hahahaha...
Anyway, thanks for sharing that, IE! I laughed really hard at that!
^ Haha... it was from an interview, actually.
Then I looked around somemore and I found a video with twilight fans' responses to his comment.. here.
I guess most Twilight fans care about the lovey-dovey storyline and not the actual WRITING? I also complained to my friends (who are twilight fans) about how utterly WEAK I found Bella, but they were like, uh no, she's only physically weak. She's really strong. I didn't argue anymore but excuse me, strong?! I can't believe I have so much contempt for a fictional character. dry.gif
tpylopez
i'd rather read Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles. HP is great too... i love the books more than the movies.
