For the past three days, I watched this amazing series called Shanghai Tan/The Bund/Shanghai Beach. Has anyone else seen this series starring Chow Yun Fat, Ray Liu, and Angie Chiu? I feel like this is the best series I have seen from TVB, China or ATV. Is anyone else familiar with it? Hehe...I know it's really old (lol made 8 years before I was born!), but wow the acting, story line, and issues is truly spectacular. Nothing seems cheesy or old about this series even though it was made 28 years ago. It supposedly shot Chow Yun Fat to stardom, I have to admit, he is dashing in this series. And he is the GOD of acting, he played every emotion and feeling beyond perfection.

Cast:
Chow Yun-Fat
Ray Lui Leung-Wai
Gigi Chiu Nga-Chi
Lau Dan

Short Summary:
For those who aren't familiar, the story line is about these two friends in the 1930s starting with nothing and eventually climbing to the top of different mafias to rule Shanghai. It is inspire by the Godfather but definitely has its own feel and story.

The series is on youtube, tudou.com, and many many other places

Here are some pictures from this classic TVB series- Chow Yun Fat as Hui Man Keung

Ray Lui as Ding Li on the left

the female lead, Angie Chiu as Fung Cheng Cheng with Hiu Man Keung

Usually with TVB series, I honestly feel bored because of the slow pacing and cheated because of the slapstick humor. This series completely changed my view because I actually felt for every character and scene. They were real live characters, each with different faults and strenghts.

I would love to start a discussion if there isn't one already. Some of the questions I am left thinking is should Hui Man Keung have taken revenge? What about Cheng Cheng? Should she have taken Hui Man Keung back?

Gosh never watched this series before but from what my dad said, it was one of the best TVB series a historic classic. I think the hype around that time was unbelievable, I heard people were desperate to get off work to watch the show.

i this and the remake in 1994. this maybe a classic, but i like the remake better because of the cast

I prefer the new adaptation with Huang Xiao Ming, but Chow Yun Fat wasn't too bad as the original shuai ge.
I like Ray Lui as Ding Li, though. The new one paled in comparison.

I prefer the 1996 remake because of the cast. They've probably the same storyline anyway!!
