hi hi hi first!!!! LOL

new youtube GEM clip

i will try to maintain a top songs of the year's list every so often....to refresh the impact of some songs earlier in the year.

here's to a great 2009 year in hk music.
themissingpiece
^ Ditto here's to a great year for HK music in 2009!

Battle of the Top Line Female Singer Mandarin Albums:

Gigi, Kelly, Joey, Miriam, and Kay are expected to release Mandarin albums. Who will come out on top?

Joey has 3 albums planned for 2009: A Cantonese EP, Mandarin album, Cantonese Album

Swing is regrouping (I know 60699 is happy about this!)

The newcomers are starting early this year, with Edmond Tong, Alex Wu, and Keith Wong releasing in January. Or maybe EEG is trying to make us forget William's "Lucky Star" by giving us talent in Alex Wu & Keith Wong.

blablablah
YAY 2009 MUSIC THREAD!!!! wow much much happening this year!!!

Swing reunion sounds awesome! i must say though it'll feel a bit weird seeing Eric and Jerald back as singers performing on JSG LOLL

and wow, EEG seems to be stepping up their game, 2 talented singers releasing albums this early on in the year! (and omg, wasn't Keith originally supposed to debut in 2005? i remember looking at an EEG pamphlet from in Bi-Heart).

Mando album wars!!! it'll be interesting. Joey's Mainland series just started airing and she just finished her Shanghai concert not that long ago, so it looks like she has the edge. But then Miriam's currently filming a series in Beijing herself (though she doesn't have the concert advantage anymore cuz her Shanghai concert got cancelled), while Kelly and Gigi both have a big mainland Chinese fan base. Kay probably won't be "winning" the fight, at least not yettt, but then if she makes a good album it'll definitely help pave the way for a successful career in Taiwan where the public really seem to like "unique/different" talents like her.

And and OMGSOEXCITED for Joey's releases this year biggrin.gif she already finished shooting the cover for her upcoming EP!!! and apparently there are 2 songs in the album by Alvin Leong and 1 by Christopher Chek. And if i remember correctly, Joey said there's gonna be a big project this year (iunno if she's talking about these 3 releases or something else). Let's hope Joey has an amazing 10 year anniversary biggrin.gif

oooo and don't forget, the HK Coliseum's re-opening very soon after a much needed renovation!!! I'm going back to HK, so hopefully i'll be able to catch a concert!!!! (rumour has it that Kay's debut concert will be in May, which is wen i'll be back in HK!!!)
themissingpiece
What a coincidence, blah, I'm most likely going to HK in May as well biggrin.gif

I'm actually really anticipating the Christopher Chak composition for Joey. I LOVE his compositions that I have heard so far, 富士山下, 自愛, 鍾無艷, and 不吐不快. Wonderful that Joey is able to work with new producers!!! How is she able to work with the Universal people though?

And of the Mandarin album wars, my money's on Gigi and Kelly, probably the edge going to Gigi. Both have such solid Mandarin market records. There are supposedly Cantonese tracks on Gigi's album, actually kind of curious about the new music from Gigi. She's been quiet for a while.

So odd, they are packaging Alex & Keith's debut albums together. Alex's = The New Man, Keith = Who Knows Keith? Both are good singers and seriously they should have put one out last year instead of William.

And..SAMMI'S BACK!!!!!!!!!!
Jump Then Fall
is desmond pang considered a newcomer for 2008 or 2009?
his 你是我的蝴蝶 is pretty good

Eric Kwok's Wow is quite catchy

I don't wanna start the forum being a b*tch, but ugh can you please stop with all the GEM videos, we know you like Gem, and please tone it down. It's becoming almost a bit unbearbale with all the videos and basically everything about her.

Ugh sorry, having PMS and major moodswings cuz of a bigbigbigbig test tmr, and no I don't even watch it, it's just seeing another GEM video... 8-)

Back to 2009, Alex Wu is someone I definately will be keeping an eye for. Still waiting for some of the younger generations to release their albums since mando doesn't interest me all that much.

Wish everyone here at forum and singers have a happy and successful year.

Oh so is the 2008 music discussion gone forever? or is it archived somewhere?

^i dont share a lot of gem stuff...maybe i've talk about her a lot recently because i've just started to get used to this thread/ppl and so i introduce a 3 month's worth of material of her...(like in one post)...she doesn't share often so i share it with you guys...if you don't like it, don't watch it.

besides, she doesn't have new material out yet...i share more jane zhang stuff than her...i believe...now that's something you should complain about

you are obviously taking this topic way too seriously...i share as much new music as i can find...to talk about the music...i don't care tooo much about the thing's outside of it that much...just good quality music...

Understandable, good luck on the test! LOL (me wonders why you are here...lol but music is a good way to prep up for a bIG test)

OMG Eric's Wow is soooo good now lol (only problem is the name of the song...Bibi Zhou released a song entitled Wow about a year ago...i know a lot of song's have the same name...but 1 year?)
"I like to live my kind of life
I like the way I live my life"
i love the fast songs 2009 has brought early on...from Sammi, Eason, Miriam, Hins etc etc
shawty_says
Desmond Pang's a 2008 newcomer. He has a decent voice, his songs aren't bad, and his live performances are pretty solid, though I've seen some horrible ones (ie male newcomes performing with Hins). I was disappointed that he didn't win any newcomer awards, esp after seeing William sweep all the gold ones.

Anyways, question about Alex and Keith's debut. Are they being marketed as a duo, or did EEG become cheap and decide to package their debut albums together? If it's the latter, then that's quite sad considering Alex Wu seems very talented. Agree that they should have debuted last year instead of William.
daydreamgirl
I heard the news that Jacky Cheung is back and will release cantonese album this year but not sure if it is true or not.
themissingpiece
^ wow 2009 = new Jacky material? Great obviously biggrin.gif

I like Desmond a lot as well, he was unfortunately overlooked due to the likes of William, Bosco, etc. Sad considering there weren't that many male newcomers to begin with. Sigh, Desmond is just in the list of newcomers rather overlooked from 2008, Rannes, Cherry, Takki, Eva, Colleen.

Nope, EEG isn't marketing Keith & Alex as a duo (like Don & Mandy). They're just packaging the albums together to save money n_thumbdown.gif Both are said to be really good but just from the online comments, many are anticipating Keith's debut cuz he waited very long for an album to get released.

Break: There is a G.E.M thread @ AF, you can post there as well with her videos. It would be nice to maintain some variety in here which was one of the things I enjoyed in our 2008 thread whistle.gif

kencl: LOL, no way would I delete our old thread. It's actually just unpinned and closed in the HK Ent forum, it's still floating there biggrin.gif

angelicdestiny
2009 is going to be filled with unlimited music! I cannot wait to hear Alex Wu's album, he was great in EEG's singing contest. Jacky is definitely going to be back in the Canto-pop scene this year, and I can't wait to hear new material from him!!

And wow! Universal producers for Joey? I really like 可歌可泣, and I just can't wait for her EP! This is going to be a wonderful thread of 2009!
Yunsias ♥
themissingpiece: I believe that RubberBand is in GoldLabel.

Whee~ new thread! I believe 2009 will be an exciting year of music since people are getting competitive after seeing a non top-tiered singer sweeping the 4 station awards.

I absolutely can't wait for Alex Wu and Keith Wong to release their debut EPs/albums! Hmm...shall look forward to Edmund Tong's debut this month.

By the way, Joey is coming to Singapore for Starlight concert in April! Hope that I can save enough money to go and get the most expensive tickets! This is her first concert in Singapore, no?
tvbaddict
Hi guys, hopefully this thread will maintain like the beginning-middle of 2008 one...

Yes, Jacky's back! His new song is the Disney themesong (I think). Sadly, it's a Mandarin song for Hong Kong's Disney.. weirdo. He also said that if he does do another concert, it'll be in 2010. His new album better not be another Mandarin one.

Yay to Swing!

I really hope Joyce will release her album this year.

Back to watching Obamamamamama.
princess_kazumi
A article from New Monday magazine said that I Love You Boyz moved to Gold Label because their contract with Silly Thing has ended from last year's November. Apparently, Gold Label/Paco held a signing contract event on 19th Jan for I Love You Boyz.

Gigi, Kelly, Joey, Miriam, and Kay are expected to release Mandarin albums. Who will come out on top?

In terms of sales, I would probably say maybe Gigi coming out on top in Taiwan; Kelly in the mainland.

In other news...

Alex Fong renewed his contract with Gold Label, pocketing ~ HK$10 million for renewing a 3 year contract.

2009 plans for Fiona - (wants to) release a good/high quality Cantonese album
2009 plans for Endy - going to release his 1st New songs + best selection
2009 plans for Pakho - advancing in music, film and TV industries

hmmm i'm kind of new to understanding how a contract works in the hk music industry. can anyone fill me in? i'm guessing artists receive bonuses tied to selling albums...and that they have obligations to hold concerts. they also have to participate in company events...are they given any free/spare time?

anything else that i didn't cover would be nice ^^.

blah: Do you know for sure that Miriam's concert in Shanghai was canceled? I know I've read it somewhere before but previously I tried looking for news on it to be 100% sure but couldn't find any.

edit: yes it was canceled
themissingpiece
GASP, blah got a new font color and font!

Thanks for the news boa_fan. Was wondering about Alex's contract. And omg I didn't know that Endy's family opened a "hoi mei' store! I thought Fiona did great with <Smile>, though timing of the album killed her chances in 2008..though it got her started and ready for 2009 since the songs are still plugging.

I think we're forgetting a BIG contract that will end at the end of 2009...Miriam's with A-Music. My money's that she'll stay in East Asia but definately no longer in A-Music under Mr. Lai.

Btw, for anyone who's curious what Edmond Tong (湯駿業, the newcomer) sounds like. He's the one featured in the duet with Fiona in 給十年後的我 in her latest album, <Smile>. And nice voice biggrin.gif

Anyone notice the pedigree that Niki has on her new album? With names like Khalil, Chet, and Keith Chan(!). Yet..the outcome is a disappointment...What happened to Keith Chan, he used to be so prolific.

Clesias, princess_kazumi, thanks for the info. They are added and/or changed.

Was youtubing Keith Wong's songs and he's good! Yet notice the date they're uploaded in 2007..and he's releasing an album in 2009..

Probably in the contract, the artist has to agree to release X number of albums within the contract period, maybe do a concert or something, do movies etc.

Selling albums - they may get a commission on each album sold like maybe 10/album goes to their earnings

Contract would probably also have how much of your total earnings goes towards a 'management fee'

And maybe if the artist is big enough they may be able to negotiate other terms like getting getting a long(er) vacation time, music freedom, or maybe aim for certain awards that kind of thing.

There are SOO many concerts for the 2009 year already at the brand new HKC!!!

Hopefully, this time they will find some way to get Miriam's concert released on DVD.
I'm just so bummed every time I watch those fan recorded clips on youtube of her AAL concert.

tried listening to Keith Wong's song eh...I don't really like his singing. He sounds out of breath =/ and his voice seems strained. ><

I heard there was gonna be a Denise concert though wasn't sure if it was confirmed. I hope there'll be more guests this time like Eason and Miriam (maybe a surprise guest like Joey ^^) They haven't had a duet in so...long. Still a long wait before the concert though.

Although I don't really know what you mean by "find some way," ... I doubt their gonna not release her concert on DVD again so hopefully you can look forward to watching it on DVD.

She meant 'find some way' cause a DVD for Miriam's AAL concert was not created because her current company Amusic has not bought out all the rights for her songs from her previous companies. It would have costed Amusic ALOT of money to do so therefore they forfeited the idea of a DVD. And if she only used songs from Amusic, it would have only been her songs from Meridian which meant that there wouldn't even be a point for her concert.

OMG thanks Sabby for the list! <3 Sept - Nov. Sucks that when I'm going to be there, nothing that I want to see planned.

Ohh I wanted to ask who's the one singing in the duet version of 給十年後的我, turns out that that it's Edmund Tong! Hmmm...not bad.

Speaking about Keith Wong, this is the song that got me hooked on him. I don't know why the song is made in 2007 but it was included in EEG's album last year.

Keith Wong 王凱駿 - 緣崖
angelicdestiny
themissingpiece: I actually think that Vincy is more ready to hold a concert at HKC than Kay. The reason I say that is because I think Vincy is extremely good at a live show (I'm not implying that Kay's bad or anything). Every song she does in her Close To You concert, is absolutely flawless to her recorded versions. I believe that she's got what it takes.

And, I desperately want to go to see Vincy's HKC concert!! Too bad I'm not going back to HK anytime soon sad-smiley-065.gif
kencl
I too agree with AngelicDestiny that Vincy is more ready for the concert. Not only can Vincy perform her own songs flawlessly, I remember her singing a handful of other songs (such as Stephy's Lightbulb) and they were all great.

Kay, has her ups and downs with live singing, and I don't think she can perform other people's songs as well, perhaps due to the distinction of her voice. Another thing would be the fact that Kay lacks fast songs, so the whole show is basically slow love songs, whereas Vincy has a few fast songs and she can dance. I just can't imagine Kay dancing at all shocked.gif

Despite that, I will look forward to both their concerts, but I am pleased to see Vincy being promoted by EEG as I feel she can be 'queen' material in a given few years.

i think both can hold a least a decent concert. they both have enough great songs to make a worthwhile playlist. i'd also like to hear both concerts if they ever appear on cd =)

thanks for the information. movies....that must be in special cases...lol i didnt know artists had to know how to act before becoming artists.

when it comes to finding a new company/contract, how does it work? if i remember one situation, when eason left. his music had to stay behind and was property of eeg. eeg kept releasing all these eason compilations to try and get as much money out of it possible. does eason have the right to distribute song's made during his time with eeg on a cd compilation for universal.
blablablah
yeah i finally decided to change my font! LOL might as well spend my AFz right? aha nothing special though, but i like green tongue.gif

hmm i agree with themissingpiece that Kay is a bit more ready to hold a concert at the HKC than Vincy. If you talk about live singing, they both have their pros and cons. I do agree that Vincy is more consistent in terms of tuning, but i think Vincy needs to work on her vocal projection cuz sometimes she gets drowned out by the background music (of course, that can be fixed by playing around with the amp system tongue.gif). Meanwhile, even though Kay does have her off days, at the same time she surprises us with a performance even better than the recorded version. And i personally find Kay's performances more interesting cuz she likes to ad-lib/improvise on the spot and harmonize. And i would also like to see Kay make more use of her whistle register smile.gif

Also, again i agree that Vincy has more fast songs and is a much better dancer lol (i still won't say she's awesome though tongue.gif but neither was Joey at first and now she's improved heaps and is actually recognized as a good dancer biggrin.gif). That said, i think Kay in general has more variety because she does more alternative, rock, and R&B stuff with a unique twist.

Finally, holding a concert at the HKC is about status and popularity, and in this "category" Kay has the edge cuz she has a larger fan base and just won the Media Award which is arguably the most prestigious award at the 4 major awards ceremonies. But either way, i think both concerts would be interesting and i'm looking forward to watching clips from both their concerts on youtube and possibly buying the DVDs aha

Not exactly 100% sure how it works because I always thought that a song belonged to the composer/lyricist, but in HK the songs appear to belong to the company it was released under.

So using the Eason case for example, Universal will need permission from EEG to release Eason songs from his days at EEG and Universal & EEG will need permission from Capital Artists (which is now under a new name) to release Eason songs from his days at Capital Artists.

But in a strange case, Universal bought all the rights of Eason's Mandarin songs during his Capital or EEG days, but EEG released yet another "Best of" Mandarin Eason collection with those songs post-rights buying. So I don't know if EEG got permission from Universal to release those Eason Mando songs (which is highly unlikely) or Universal didn't actually get the full rights to the songs.

BTW, Christopher Chak isn't under Universal. He was only "discovered," if you will, by Alvin Leong who is, by name, under Universal. The only reason he appears to only be working with Universal artists (Eason, Kay, Hins) is because Alvin and Universal are the only ones giving him a chance. Actually, Christopher has gotten other chances, his work has been used by other artists (a Mainland artists also, I believe) but their names aren't as big as the aforementioned and therefore no one cares/cared to pay attention.

I had an idea in the older thread, where I can generate a list of singers, and people can add singers, and we all write down our favourite songs from that artist, since the start of the year tends to be calm.

I guess a starting list would be something like this:

Joey
Miriam
Denise
Leo
Eason
Hacken
Andy Lau
Andy Hui
Hins
Kay
Janice
Fiona
Khalil
Ivana
Vincy
Kary
Stephanie

Anyone want to add or minus singers?? I thought it would be nice to revisit some of the older songs of various singers that people tend to forget, such as the song that got them famous or other underrated songs that you like.

Eason talks about his new song: Allegro Opus 3.3am

Kay talks about her new song: 祝英台

personally i'm a bit disappointed. First of all, the colours are tacky, they actually looked better before imo. And omgggg why the heck are those "things" there outside the Coliseum? Oh and the LED screen is a disappointment too. It's not bad, and its apparently HD, but for such a prestigious arena i'm sure they could afford a better looking screen (like the scoreboards you see in North American NBA/NHL arenas). The increased space between the rows and the higher backrests do look good though, and it does look cleaner. I wonder if they added more facilities/amenities cuz the last time i went there it didn't really have anything of that sort (no concession stands, no stores, not even an indoor corridor, its like the actual arena the second you enter the building). And i DO hope they renovated the washrooms lol cuz it was pretty gross the last time i went.

^ OMG surprisingly the last time I went at the end of a concert, the bathroom WASN'T gross...but they NEED MORE bathrooms.

AngelicDesinty, kencl: You guys definately touched on a point that actually is much discussed in the HK discussion forums and something that Kay has gotten attacked for. And that is her live performances. It's much criticized and many are saying her live singing is not as good as it was pre-pregnancy. Personally, I wonder if it's cuz of her constant lung problems. But in terms of live singing, I do think that Vincy has the upper hand. She is more consistently good in her live performances. While I liked Vincy's version of 富士山下, I was disappointed by her performance of 愛在記憶中找你. And sorry but I don't really envision Kay or Vincy putting on a good dance performance but of course they have time to improve. I actually think that Ella is a more consistent live singer than Kay is sweat.gif

I don't think either has it to hold a HKC concert yet, in terms of no. of hit songs or the stage presence. But I only said Kay has the edge so to speak, because of her success in 2008. biggrin.gif

Clesias: oo I like Keith's 緣崖!!

kencl: I think that's a great idea, because it can help to songs that aren't that well known but are hidden gems. But I was actually thinking of going back EVEN further biggrin.gif Say 80s with the greats of Leslie, Anita. What do you guys think..start at that era and go forward or just start with our current king/queens?

o and btw..Mani said that Twins will "definately" release an album in the last half of 2009.

EDIT: I definately LIKE the idea of the seats with higher backs cuz I was really disappointed by the seats when I got there. I was like what?! Plastic seats?!? and it wasn't that comfortable.

kencl, from that list, maybe add FAMA and HotCha and minus Andy Hui. don't think i heard much from andy this year.

Being a singer doesn't mean you have to know how to dance. they can dance around the stage and swing around and whatever...they don't need to formally do dances.

covering the 80s till now would take some time...lol (although im for the idea, but will not contribute) im all for doing 2008 though

i wonder how Twins will be received when they return. i liked the gillian solo act. make a wish was a good song sung solo...but its a good thing gillian will be able to come back. hopefully she spent her long time off wisely. (maybe brush up on the singing part?)
