I am interested in teaching English abroad in Taiwan or Korea. If you have any experience teaching abroad please tell me where you taught (or currently teach) and what company represented you. Also any tips, advice, or fun crazy stories would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi there!

One of my best friends, is from South Africa and he is teaching English in Wuhan, China right now. He says the pay is very good, and he is enjoying the hell out of himself there. His family are very happy too.

As for myself, yes, I do plan on teaching English and moving back to China, but as a sort of "second option."

The economy in the US is very bad right now, so after I am finished with school, who knows what's in store for me?

But going back, and teaching, is always an option, and a GREAT one for me at least.

Good luck with your future endeavors.

U'd need a degree + a tesol/tesl/celta cert before u can do anything nowadays. I do recommend as it can be so fun. I usually tutor people that come to Australia and plan to go travel while teaching in Asia.

You'll have to do a 'Teaching English as a Foreign Language' couse (TEFL)
my friend is off to italy to teach kids at a summer school english,
but you have to be careful and check over any contractual things carefully because this girl I know went to teach english in Prague and it turned out that she had to pay for own accomodation (when they said in the advert that they'd pay for her) and also the pay was a lot less than what they stated. Remember to read the small print.
Good luck!

Interesting thread! I've been thinking about this recently. Do you have to be a native speaker though?

I want to teach English in Asia as well. I know that I have to do a training course for 100 hours and if I pass that then I could apply for the job. The job isn't that great I believe, but it would look good on CV as my friend says. He plans to go to teach English for a year and his friend said it was great experience and he met his Japanese wife by teaching English in Japan. I wish I could be like him tongue.gif

I'm currently in Japan teaching English for a small company but I hope to move to a bigger company where I'll get sponsored past my current visa which runs out in September. I didn't take any TEFL or TESOL course but I do have a degree however. I know in Japan that the qualification isn't necessary but it does help, you only really need it if you want to work in an international school.

After that I hope to do the same in Korea or Taiwan but as an ALT in a school but I'm gonna see how things go on here...or go to Hong Kong as I don't need a visa.

Get TESOL training before you go, as most good schools or companies would require that. They'll also help you find a job at a good school after you graduate. The intensive course only takes about a month. I had a really good experience with it, and they give you some helpful resources. thumbsup.gif

Teaching abroad is one of the things I'm considering doing once I get out of school. Where? I don't know (probably either France or East Asia) but this thread is fantastic, thanks to everyone who has posted in it biggrin.gif
I know someone who told me he really enjoyed teaching English in Korea, and that re-ignited my want to teach it, haha. My mom told me not to because she can't see me dealing with kids/teens every day though. Maybe in a university setting though.

I'd like to teach English in Japan. Although that is very very hard to do because Japan is so strict with letting people in now. I suggest you visit the country for 2 years or so before teaching there. (if money wasn't a problem haha)

I don't have any experience teaching English abroad but I heard the pay is very attrative and it comes with house allowance, Japan & Hong Kong and Taiwan are very popular. Some of my friends doesn't have much or none experience, they still manage to get a teaching job abroad. Best of all is to land a job in the international schools, the benefits are great.

I had no experience nor did I have any qualifications but it's not a big deal...at least in Japan anyway. They just prefer people with it though. The pay isn't bad, it's more than I ever got at home so I'll be staying here for the meantime...especially while it is pretty much impossible to get a job back at home.
