I feel nowdays, hong kong movies are really stupid and pointless. It is really gay and makes no sense at all. They have bad actors( some are better than others) i think that they are very "mo liu". when i watch one, i think to myself "What the hell is the point of this movie?". I prefer the older ones like the ones with Steven Chow Because its ACTUALLY funny sometimes. So what do you people feel about hong kong movies?

well it really just depends on the movie...some movies are better than others, but englishmuffin does have a point about nowadays hong kong movies are kinda stupid and pointless...because so far this year i haven't watched a movie that i really enjoyed simply because 1. it didn't really make sense 2. it wasn't very interesting 3. the genre of the movie is mixed up (for example: a comedy is not a comedy because it's not even funny, a horror movie is not a horror because it's not even scary etc...)

maybe the during the next half of the year there'll be more better movies out!!

I haven't watched much of the Hong Kong movies lately but comparing to Hollywood.....they are still behind but I am not saying they are rubbish. Difficiult county has their different ways of making movies, Hollywood is rather daring and with Hong Kong, they do held back slighty with violent scenes or how the language is being used.

It's hard to say if this decade of Hong Kong movies are worse than previous. What is alarming is the number of productions, every years it is less and less.

And last years are bad not for the numbers of movies, but somehow diversity of genres is decreasing.

But You can still find masterpieces from Tsui Hark, Johnnie To, Wai Ka Fai, Edmond Pang, Pang Brothers, Ann Hui, Stanley Kwan, Benny Chan.

But it's no dobut, creoators are in mortal danger cause of money and China censors, what use is to make film like you want, when you can't sell it, or someone cut some scenes.

I have to agree with the original poster. Modern HK movies are just awful. Their comedys are distasteful and most of the humor is either outdated or just not funny at all. I specificly hate the sexual humors.

yupz i have to agree. most of the time they crack crappy jokes, which is lame instead of funny.

Mainland and taiwan is still doing a good job though.

I kinda agree with Buidoi. Hong Kong movies have come a long way from poor film quality and poor dubbing.

I think the serious HK movies with big stars..the plots are soooo complex! If you are not fluent in chinese like me, you won't really get it....
