Andy Lau to shoot Song-and-Dance Duet film

XINHUANET - Hong Kong film and music star Andy Lau will shoot a comic film with top mainland comedian Zhao Benshan based on a traditional folk art known as Song-and-Dance Duet, reported CRIENGLISH.com. Andy Lau said he has long appreciated Zhao's efforts to revive this art and they decided to bring it to the silver screen. Song-and-Dance Duet is a popular form of entertainment in northeast China. It combines oral story telling, local opera and dancing, usually between two performers. The film will be released during the Spring Festival next year.

(8/25/2004) Andy Lau Tak Wa and Sammi Cheng Sau Man play thieves in YESTERDAY ONCE MORE. Since they play high class characters, red wine naturally is a must. In the film they even have their favorite red wine. Sammi likes the mini bottle while Wa Jai only likes the big bottle.

In real life, neither Wa Jai nor Sammi enjoy drinking and have no idea how to enjoy red wine. Wa Jai said, at public events and celebrations he would ask the crew to prepare green tea instead of champagne for him. Sammi said that she used to drink red wine with friends. When she tried to shake the glass, the red wine in the glass went all over the floor.

Imo Andy Lau is one of the most talented actors and singers in the business at the moment, some of his songs i really like are 'Kick to the Future' (soundtrack to Shaolin Soccer), 'Wu Jian Dao' (soundtrack to Infernal Affairs also sung with Tony Leung), 'Bing Yu', 'Wang Le Yin Chang' and 'Wo Bu Gou Ai Ni' (also sung with Kelly Chen)

I'd say Jiang Hu is worth watching but it can come as a little disappointment what with all the hype surrounding it. The DVD by Mei Ah is worth purchasing as it has lots of special features too, best if you get it from sites like dddhouse. I wouldn't say it's a bad film at all, it has a very dark mood to it, you don't know what is going to happen next, and is acted well by the whole cast even Edison did a good job loool.gif . It also has a nice twist at the end. Just don't expect it to be as good as Infernal Affairs because it isn't.

ORIENTAL DAILY NEWS - Besides pleasing his fans, Andy Lau's current concerts have another usage: to provide work to youngsters who have been released from prison and reentering the work force. Recently a youngster who served jail time was released from prison and was worried that he wouldn't get hired because of his tainted background. He is thankful to Andy for giving him the opportunity to appear as a dancer at his concert. The star's been keeping close tabs on this group of individuals. Worried that they can't get a job, Andy immediately promised two of them jobs to play a lion and a horse at the show. He even plans on having them show their faces during the show on the 14th, allowing these behind-the-scene heroes to be applauded by 12,000 fans. Andy says, "I really hope I can be of use as a leader, to tell society that they can do it. This time I used action to prove they can renew themselves and live a normal life. But my strength as one person is very small. I really hope everyone can give them another chance."

Andy Lau Tak Wa's 15 show concert series ended last night. Two nights ago on the second to last show Wa Jai invited Jacky Cheung Hok Yau to be his guest performer. The two Heavenly Kings exchanged praises. Although Wa Jai humbly said that he cannot sing as well as Hok Yau, Hok Yau pointed out that Wa Jai is his real idol. Hok Yau even praised Wa Jai's professionalism as worthy of being the younger generation's role model.

While Hok Yau mysteriously appeared the crowd erupted. Hok Yau first sang SHE CAME TO LISTEN TO MY CONCERT (TA LOI TING NGOR DIK YIN CHEUNG WUI), then he sang with Wa Jai the song that he competed in a singing contest with, DAI DEI YUN CHING. After the performance Wa Jai found a mosquito flying over Hok Yau's head and brushed it away, Hok Yau said, "This is what the saying meant by 'the tone lingered in the room for three days.'" Wa Jai pouted, "I sang the entire night and I didn't get one mosquito!"

Wa Jai said that he has always wanted to invite Hok Yau to be his guest but he did not know whether Hok Yau would agree. This time he finally got enough courage to ask. Hok Yau said, "Why didn't you ask me earlier, I've wanted this for a long time." Hok Yau expressed that he and Wa Jai share the same Chinese astrological sign and the same birth year, but Wa Jai looks much younger than him. Hok Yau also described Wa Jai as "iron man". "Wa Jai's positive professionalism, treatment of people and events in the business is absolutely number one. On television, in films and music he is everywhere. The younger generation should see how veterans stand in this business and should first look at Wa Jai."

Andy Lau, Emme Wong, Leo Ku and Jeff Chang were the guests on "Jade Solid Gold" on Wednesday and Andy indicated that he had not been on the show for a while. As for having to sing live, he says: "If you have enough time to prepare, then it is a good thing and the live band is even better." He had originally planned to take part in the 'Rock' section of the show, but because he did not have enough time to rehearse, they changed it to the song 'Massage Lady' with a guitar accompaniment instead. He says: "I felt like I had suddenly gone back to school."

After taking part in the show, Andy had a party for thousand people as he celebrated his birthday early with his fans, saying: "I will be heading to Shanghai for my tour tomorrow, so with fans all around the world having come to watch my concert, I did not want them to stay in Hong Kong to wait for my birthday celebration and so we had one early instead."

As guest host on JSG, Emme revealed that she was very nervous during rehearsals and wearing hotpants, she indicated that she has six or seven bruises on her inner thigh, saying: "It is quite spooky. They appeared when I woke up and I don't think I had hurt myself. (Sleepwalking?) Maybe!"

Anyone know when his concert will come out in DVD? I know it just ended but on average, how long does it takes for the DVD to come out. I heard that his concert was really great. Too bad I couldn't attend his concert in person.

Andy Lau Tak Wa's 15 show VISION TOUR concert has ended two nights ago. Hong Kong Men's Double Table Tennis Silver Medalists Li Ching and Ko Lai Chak were in the audience. Wa Jai led the audience in applause. "All of the athletes have given quite an effort and should be respected. Are they not athletes if they don't win the gold medal? We should support all types of athletes." He even said to Li Ching and Ko Lai Chak, "Although I am not as rich as other people, if you want a sposnor just ask me!"

Two nights ago due to the big lottery drawing, Wa Jai played "Mr. Lottery" as the audience requested and unveiled the numbers. He promised, "If I win the top prize, I will perform 4 free shows at the Hong Kong Coliseum. Tonight's audience will even get a share of the money." Unfortunately all 20 of Wa Jai's tickets came up empty except the number seven. "I just have to keep working hard!" Wa Jai said, "I am skin and bones and you say I am huge. I am full of wrinkles and you say I am handsome. You have been so supportive in whatever I do. This is what is called love! With so much love what do I need to win the lottery for?"

The show lasted until 12:15AM. Wa Jai said, "We have to dissemble the stage for TVB, otherwise TVB will sue me. The stage has to be transported to China for the tour. We will have more fun next time!"

The final show's guest was Deanie Ip Tak Han. When she appeared she was dressed as a crew member who was inspecting the equipment. When she removed the hat everyone recognized her. She even tried to stand on the elevating platform to sing CRIMSON SON (CHET JI), but she said that seniors do not have much blood to the heart and came down after awhile. When Wa Jai appeared and embraced he could no longer hold back his tears. Then he sang HOW ROMANTIC IS A LONG NIGHT (CHEUNG YEH DOR LONG MAN) for her. After the show Wa Jai opened champagne bottles and sprayed the audience. The viewers did not duck at all. Wa Jai said, "I have so many friends, not every artist has that kind of luck. I hope everyone treats me like a friend."

Today Wa Jai will fly to Shanghai for his Mainland tour. He revealed that at the outdoor shows water will replace fire and the shows will even have firework. Originally he had a day off yesterday, but due to a physical check up he had to fast at the post party. "The doctor said that at my age I still exercise a lot and wants to check whether I can take it. My old knee injury still hasn't healed yet."

Andy Lau Tak Wa yesterday accepted a radio interview and celebrated her birthday on the 27th in advance. A metaphysics expert predicted that Wa Jai has at least 20 more years of success. As for birthday wish, Wa Jai said, "This year I am more practical and hope to reach 150 pounds. Right now I am only 143 pounds." Earlier he went for a physical check up. "The female doctor checked my body and said that I am the body of an athlete." Later he will fly to Haiban to perform.

When the host said that iron man Wa Jai would need five Wa Jais to be able to do everything that he does. Wa Jai joked that he needs six because one of them has to date. When asked about Jackie Chan and Alan Tam Wing Lun revealing the identity of their sons and whether Wa Jai would publicize his marriage, Wa Jai stressed that he is single and has no children. He uses his time to sing and not to cover up. If he has a girlfriend he will definitely publicize that.

Andy Lau spends $800,000 on gifts to fans, Monday September 27, 2004 Hong Kong

SING TAO - Andy Lau has been working nonstop. Just shortly after wrapping up his Hong Kong concerts, the star went on to tour China. The tour manager was nice enough to give Andy a short break so he could fly back to Hong Kong to celebrate his birthday. Andy already had a pre-birthday with his fans on September 15, shelling out HK $800,000 worth of tea. Because fans are sreaming for their idol night after night, Andy will give each fan club member the very same Chinese herbal tea that his doctor prescribed. Each dose is close to a thousand dollars. In addition to the cash prize given away at the party, Andy will add a travel package to be raffled off. Andy celebrated his birthday with Lam Ka Dong (his birthday was on the 21st). While they dueted on stage, Andy even stripped off his shirt to reveal his upper muscles causing fans to shriek and swoon.

Andy Lau saved an abandoned temple in Malaysia?, Tuesday September 28, 2004 Hong Kong

KUALA LUMPUR: An abandoned temple off Jalan Sungai Besi has received a new lease of life after Hong Kong superstar Andy Lau became a devotee a couple of years ago.

Since word got out that Lau was now a follower, the Yee Ling Temple has also attracted other movie stars from the Chinese territory.

This year for the first time, this temple will become the destination of a Hong Kong tour group during the mid-autumn festival or the mooncake festival which falls on Tuesday.

Hong Kong disc jockey and actress Celia Sie Nien Che will be a member of the tour group.

Temple caretaker Lee Hiu Fong said a special mass prayer is being organised for the Hong Kong devotees who have joined a three-day-two-night tour of Yue Lao praying here on Monday night.

Lee said she was surprised that her temple had become a “tourists attraction” although the Hong Kong movie stars had been frequenting the place.

She pointed out that this was the first time they had a mass prayer which was to take advantage of the auspicious year blessed with two li chun (beginning of spring) and double leap months.

Lee said Jia Shen year was one with twin springs and double leap months thus having two li chun (beginning of spring).

According to the lunar calendar, she said a year with leap months was auspicious and ideal for couples to get married.

“The Chinese believe that Yue Lao and He He Er Xian (Two Gods of Blissful Marriage) match make singles and bless married couples during this period,” she said.

One devotee Ong Kim Hoe, 35, who was spotted praying at the temple on Friday, said he was there to offer thanks as he was getting married.

Established more than 50 years ago, the temple was formerly located in Jalan Loke Yew before it was relocated in the 80’s.

How very kind of him to save a temple... not many actors do that very often now..

I ran across an article on Andy Lau which is sort of a character analysis of him, from the perspective of the western (non-hk) media. It practically gushes over his raw animal calculated magnetism and evil/charming ways blink.gif ... it's a little over-the-top, possibly, but kind of interesting...

"Sept. 9, 2004 | What would happen if one of the biggest stars in Hollywood persisted in playing gigolos, male strippers, smooth con men, double agents? Imagine the effect it would have on movies if one of its major players chose to be softly insinuating, yet entirely seductive -- a teasing, duplicitous love object whose eyes cunningly work the screen, but who somehow retains the persona of a dynamic action hero.

It's not likely that an actor like Tom Cruise would consistently cast himself as the homme fatale. But Andy Lau, 42, whose 2002 film "Infernal Affairs" finally will be released Friday in the U.S., has done just that. And he is perhaps Hong Kong's most bankable, respected star who hasn't yet crossed over into American films. Lau, who is also one of Asia's most popular singers, is an actor with the dexterity of Kevin Spacey, but with the command for a romantic role; he specializes in intriguing women and tough-talking other men, yet he undermines both action and romance pictures with his deliberate, delicate playing. "

Unfortunately, you will have to watch a brief flash animation or ad of some sort to see the full article.

edit -- this probably should have been in the HK Idols forum..

some news

[Ta Kung Pao 28/11/04]

Having made a great contribution to the film and television industry in Hong Kong in his lifetime and having trained many great stars from the TVB artiste classes, Teacher Lau Fong Kong passed away in Vancouver in November this year and left a great sadness among his students. In order to remember such a great teacher, a special remembrance ceremony was held in his honour yesterday by his students and friends as a final mark of respect and in the hall were displayed many photographs of Teacher Lau and his students, some photos of his appearances in films and his copy of the script from "My Pretty Wife at Home".

Andy Lau recounted some of his memories of Teacher Lau, saying that in 1986, when he was frozen by TVB, it was Teacher Lau who contacted him, told him not to worry and just keep on working hard. He reveals that when he heard that Director Cheung Chi Leung had headed over to Canada to arrange for Teacher Lau to move to an extremely good nursing home, Andy had wanted Cheung to pass on his good wishes to Teacher Lau, but did not get the message there in time and this is his greatest regret.
