So both TVB and ATV decided to pumped out HK versions of Taiwan's successful show 超級星光大道.

They both premiered on July 19

The host for the TVB version is Prudence Liew. (Gary Cao is co-hosting for 3 episodes).
The hosts for the ATV version are Bowie Tseng(Eric Tsang's daughter) and Jerry Lamb

I've only watched the TVB version but the host is kinda really bad... the whole episode she was like umm errm umm... not very professional.

The contestants are mostly average... but there is always room for improvement I guess.

After being a fan of the TW version, the TVB version is lacking.

What did you guys think??

I haven't watched the ATV version yet, but I know the TVB isn't HK's version of "America's Got Talent"...it's more "American Idol."

Based on the name of ATV's version, it doesn't look like it's "America's Got Talent" either and is another "American Idol."

Edit:
Having watched both: "Asia Million Star" > "The Voice" after the first week. Aside from better hosts & judges, ATV's advantage is that they're already in the competition phase while TVB is still sorting out the final contestants.

about time that HK had their Reality TV Idol Show lol! I was always wondering why it took them so long to do it... the host should be someone who has achieved a lot in the hk music industry, I mean not saying that Prudence is not upto scratch, but it could have been, I dunno Alan Tam?? or someone that can host like Amigo Chui...

both hosts in TvB the voice and ATV's millionstar are bad..Liew was simply not a proffesional host while i dont like Jerry Lamb laughed at a situation which is i think was very sad ( a contestant cried watching his grandma supporting him and family matter being told out)

personally, i prefer TvB's The Voice.

Hehe, I like both shows!!! ;p
I'm quite happy to see so many talented vocalists in both ATV's & TVB's competition!

While i agree that Prudence is not professional enough, i actually enjoy watching her host. She does seem nervous at times & makes a few minor mistakes, but shes nice enough to be a good host for the contestants, & shes quite funny and witty at times... ;]

On the other hand, i think Jerry & Bowie are perfect matches as hosts for Asian Millionstar!
They are fast thinkers & have the ability to ease the contestants nerves because they are funny!!! They obviously sound a lot more professional & orderly.

I prefer ATV's judging panel more than TVB's.
I feel that ATV's judges give each contestant more honest/good advice & aren't afraid to say what they think.
& I just hate how TVB changes their judging panel... ;/

Also, ATV gives each contestant "equal opportunities!"
As for TVB, they have an opening song & decide to have only a certain few perform...
They have the "few" contestants sit on stage, while others are no where to be seen until they perform.

Overall, i enjoy both shows & i agree that it is nice to compare & see what happens later on. I'm excited to see collaborations & waiting to see the competition get fierce!
Hehe, let the battle begin! So excited for the contestants & HK!!! I'll for sure be a supportive audience! xD

I haven't watched the ATV version but I have to say I'm not a big fan of the host for the TVB version. She seems lost for words during most of the show and though she tries to comfort contestants, she comes aross as slightly patronising. I'd definitely prefer it if someone like Amigo hosted this instead.

To comment on the judges, is it me or does Justin get caught with the most hilarious facial expressions when the camera is on him? He's so into the song that the contestants are singing and he doesn't notice the camera xD

So far, I think the ATV version is better than TVB one, the judge, the host , the contestant. ATV has better production. What you think?

i must say.. im disappointed tvb must steal ideas from other shows.. but whats worse is the rude hostess.. lol.. i like ATV's design more.. even tho they deliberately took it from taiwan, its not like taiwan was any original either.. im sure they also paid royalty fees too

the atv version sounds interesting. i might just check it out.

There's this article in the news section that speaks about "The Voice" showcasing a lack of talent in HK. It obviously points out TVB's show, but I think it applies to both. However, I also think it applies to the fact that HK isn't appreciating the talent they currently have.

When it was announced that the guy on "Million Star" was going to perform Andy Hui's 真心真意, I was excited because it was one of the judges' songs (props for being the first to choose one) and because I personally love the song and am familar with it. However, when the guy (very nice guy, so apologies) started singing, it was the end of his run! He forced up this fake smile to make the song happy and it just wasn't working, at all. It should've made people realize the greatness of Andy (because he is obviously neglected these days) and realized not only his ability as a vocalist, but as an emotional singer. Andy never had to force up a fake smile when he performed this song, the happiness always came from his voice and not his face.

Prudence Lau. Talk about being blunt! Gary was pretty much speechless for majority of the show. He was probably wondering what is wrong with Prudence and her bluntness.

Prudence started off okay for me. Her voice was crisp and clear and she rolled along. But now, her bluntness is taking a toll. I don't think she's intentionally being rude, but she comes off as if she has no feelings/sympathy.

Prudence's greatest blunder/rudeness so far...episode 3 when she joked Justin liked the 16 year old girl. Leo playing along as if it's a funny joke was just ridiculous. TVB airing it should've gotten them xyz complaints. There are a lot of things they can joke about in private, but to put it on national television and in front of the girl (who, mind you, is a minor) is not a joke.

TVB & ATV need to exchange ideas. TVB needs to give their contestant name tags along with their numbers and ATV need to give their contestants numbers along with bigger name tags. I don't like how "The Voice" only gets several judges to comment, while I don't like how "Million Star" asks every judge to comment but only airs half (now (starting episode 4) only 1) of them.

BTW, they spelt Justin's name "Justine" for the entire 2nd episode. The subtitle-ist should've been lectured! For the entire episode? What? Copy and paste? And technically, Prudence was saying Judge-Tin, so it wasn't like Prudence made it sound like Justine.

超級巨聲 vs. 亞洲星光大道 which one is better ????

^ wow, def did not know she was actually a student of one of the judges.....
her singing is quite good, but i wonder if she's gonna sing chinese songs too....
i wonder if the other contestants have such a well known teacher....it would def help a lot...especially one thats a judge, so u know exactly what to expect...

I am sorry to say that i MUST critique ATV's poor quality when it comes to transitioning and doing sound effects. When they did animal sounds for the contestants, it made me feel like they were insulting the singers. Personally, I like the Voice more, the singers also sing better and it's actually pretty nice to follow a contestant's footsteps from early stages...
Musical-Notes
I watched an episode of ATV yesterday but didn't really like it that much. I prefer My Voice...and I like the contestants in My Voice more too. =P Though, I think Jerry & Bowie are better hosts than Prudence! I can't wait to watch episode 6 and see who's gonna go home this time. My favorite who was #27 [The younger twin brother..very shuai xDD] already went home even though he's not really that great of a singer. xP But I thought he sang better than that girl [girl he PKed]. :3
lovesound
ATV's Asian Millionstar is by far better than TVB's The Voice.
I really think Prudence is horrible as a host from the first few episodes. She seems as if she has no sympathy and even seems to mock the contestants! The judges in The Voice also seem unqualified in my opinion. Justin, Leo, and Kay are all great singers but they do not give useful comments or advice after performances - they tend to just say whether it is good or bad and do not really elaborate.
The only good thing going on for The Voice right now is the addition of Sammy Leung as host. He should've been invited in the first place!

ATV's Asian Millionstar on the other hand has much better hosts and more qualified judges that are able to give professional tips and advices about singing techniques and bringing out more emotion during performances.

In terms of the contestants and their talents, I think they are both pretty much up to par.

lets see whos better ... both singing the same song.. but one took part in the voice other million star .... 超級巨聲 vs 聲光大道 認錯

i personally think the guy from the Million star sang the song better .. the other guy from the voice i think he sang a bit crazy like the notes going too high

Adding Sammy as a co-host of "The Voice," has helped the show, no doubt. But why not fire Prudence anyways (rhetorical question)? Ever since Sammy was added, Prudence only has like 2 lines to say in the episode(s).

Asian Million Star has little time for judges to say their critiques, but the contestants can sing the full song, which is a bonus.

I love Koo Cheuk Man. He's such an enertainer! I saw the preview clips for next week and the "Super Idol" guy is awesome, the song he performs is sexy. Then they show clips of Koo Cheuk Man and that just is "HELLO" but his English isn't as great as I would like it to be, but nonetheless, such an entertainer. I think Sandee Chan will like him.

i've only watched the voice and like it, but it hasn't been as good the last few epis.
hope it picks up again n gets emotional!

The Voice:
-Mark Lui is super hilarious as a judge. Need to keep him!
-I guess TVB tried to get a Fei Ma judge on the show and got Eliza Chan. She's good, she's honest and brutal, but sometimes she appears very in-her-own-space. She appears like she's set on how a set of lyrics are supposed to be interpretated and if the singer doesn't interpret it that way, she'll automatically criticize. There are times where she's absolutely correct, but sometimes, she's a bit too set on her own thought.

Asian Million Star:
-Jerry Lamb is hilarious!!! There was not one audience member who did not laugh at one of his remarks during the PK battle.

I havent watch AMS yet but the Voice is got much better with the inclusion of Sammy

I completely agree with you! Sometimes when the participants try to sing it in their own way and it doesn't fit her interpretation, it's automatically bad. It's still much better with her in the judge panel though. The current judge panel is so much better and I'm glad TVB changed it around instead of having only those current singers/artists
Oh Crap!!
i've just started watching this, it's not that great...but i'll admit, it is better now with sammy being the co-host.

The 11 year old boy that was on episode 14 has a voice like an angel! It's so clear and soothing! Amazing! Although he sounds like a girl, it's still an amazing voice!

And the classic 月亮代表我的心: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3HFe62KqPE

^ omg he's amazing. i'm watching the tvb one, but just looked at ur clip and wow. is he a singer ?

I think Koo Cheuk Man sang the theme song of Endless Love 1994 better in AMS than the contestant in The Voice in wildcard round last weekend.

The addition of Louis Cheung to the hosting gig has been excellent over the past 2 episodes. I, once again, think TVB should hire him as a host. He can speak smoothly and pronunicate well like Amigo (though I have yet seen the speed that Amigo has because its not necessary) but he brings an extra element, comedy, that makes him a better host than Amigo for this show in particular.

For example, the guy who meesed up his lyrics in episode 17 was down after criticism for forgetting his lyrics and Louis lightened the situation by turning the truth into a little laughter. When he was "challenged" by the same guy, Louis stepped up and shot back, not with an attitude but with reason and that is hosting 101! Considering Louis wasn't a host to begin with (if I have my info correct), it is called hosting talent!

Just a little OT...I think TVB made a big mistake by letting Jerry Lamb go because he showcased in episode 16 (of Million Star) that he is more than a funny guy who can recite lines. He provided instant relief and a positive attitude at the most heartwrenching moment and THAT is a quality in hosting that cannot be taught. So IMO, the only way TVB can get a Jerry Lamb back is by hiring Louis Cheung because he brings a lighter side to hosting than Amigo does. If it does happen, Louis and Amigo will fit perfectly as partners rather than competitiors.

I have been watching each episodes and it is very excited to have competition with different singers!
