I notice a few kpop stars that are making an attempt to break in the US market. Being that the Us is flooded with mainstream and underground artist battling to get to the top already.(Me) Following along with Kpop blogs and reading the comments people have posted a lot seem in different and non supportive. With the leaving of Se7en and "Girls" single being a flop. Many argue that he should had stayed in Korea with his loyal fan base. Boa Kown slowly making a name for herself and Wonder Girls getting request on Radio Disney appearing on the Teen Choice awards. Are making a quicker progress then Se7en was but still receive some hard reviews from fellow Kpop fans.
I do not get the attitude that some Kpop fans have towards Korean artist who go outside their normal music market. Like if a US artist goes to Asia and does good there they are label "International Superstar" and still have support from American fans. If a Kpop artist does this they may lose support from their own fans and judge harshly.
Do Kpop fans truly support their artist regardless of what music market they are in or do they criticize them to death for leaving Korea?

I think it is good for the artistes to leave Korea and make a mark for themselves outside, as long as they come back and not totally focus their time in US.

I am quietly anticipating the day that one of these KPop artists to make it big in the English/American market, but until then I will happily listen to the music of these stars, in their native language, (without completely understanding) but loving just the same! I think that most of the American audience feels the same way. We take it as it is.
I seem to like songs that Korean artist make specifically for the American audience, instead of making an English 'version' of their existing Korean songs. Those never seem to go well anyway, they can't compare.
Personally I liked Girls and Eat You Up and I Did It For Love by BoA.

I like Boa to, I love her english albums
I listen to Korean music and I don't understand what they are saying but I'm really just listening to the music. Usually I find english translation of those songs. I don't see anything wrong with listening to Korean music even if its in Korean. I'm learning Korean but it takes certain type of people to wanna her some music in their native language. There a lot of american artist that I don't understand a word what they're saying. Like lil wayne would be one of them.Voted Best Rap Artist at BET Awards 2009 and I still can't understand what he is saying.

I think most kpop fans support the artist no matter what country they're in. as for the wonder girls being in america, im guessing their success is due to the overwhelming support of koreans living in america.

There are those that are trying but it is VERY difficult for an international artist to make it big over here. There might be a couple solo singers who have a chance, but none of the girl or guy groups could ever make it big over here.

I just listened to BoA U.S Debut Album and there a quiet a few good songs. They all seem tailored for the American market with the digital voice etc. which I'm not sure is good or bad. It does mean that her music will fit in with the style/trend, but is that necessarily what will get her noticed?
I feel that in the American music industry it all depends on the amount of exposure an artist receives. I think that BoA is a great artist compared to alot of the stars that are famous over here but they get all of the radio time and tv promotions that she doesn't get (well I haven't seen any at least). Lady Gaga vs. BoA... I would definatly pick BoA, yet Lady Gaga is a big hit in America. Why, maybe because she doesn't like to wear pants and that's why she is promoted everywhere? Who knows.
I also agree with Taylor N about the music groups. Boy bands and Girl bands in America were a big thing in the 90's. When I was younger the Spice Girls and Backstreet Boys were 'hot', unlike how they are still a big thing now in Asia. If those types of Asian bands came to America, they would be compared to the Backstreet Boys and N'Sync, which are now a trend of the past.

You must have read my mind cause I was thinking about the same thing. Boa vs Gaga since both or the new pop divas in the US. I like Boa a lot more because I can she that desire to be the best. There is no doubt in my mind that Gaga has talent but the constant weirdness and weird antics over shadows her musical talent. I don't like artist who hype themselves up in order to seek out attention. I like Boa is she is just more done to earth and really lets her talent speak more then her looks or fashion.
Reading Kpop blogs in recent claims against G-Dragon(Big Bang) on plagiarism on "HeartBreaker"
Every song except "Butterfly" and "Gossip Guy" has been crucify for being plagiarize.. yet. They are comparing 'Heartbreaker" to Flo Rida's "Right Round" which is a remix. "The Leaders" Feat. CL(2Ne1) Teddy Park (1tym) comparing it to Snoop Dog "Drop It Like It's Hot." The netizens are in a frenzy know on G-Dragon music and having endless debates whether it's truly original or plagiarize. To act G-Dragon on this issue seem really stupid. There are many Kpop artist that has been influence by American pop artist and what is big on the charts. I can name several Kpop stars who have taken lines and so heavy influence of American styles.
Lee Hyori
1tym
Masta Wu
Brave Sound
Drunken Tiger
2NE1 (image wise)
etc... I heard some American influence but to what extent are they willing to down right take form another artist? Seems like netizens not only criticize kpop artist for having American influence but even have the nerve to point the finger of plagiarism against them.

I just didn't like the new harder boyish hip hop image (trying to make her almost a 'black artist') just to promote her in the US. they should just stick with her current style, it worked so well.
I know some of my Korean, American and some African friends were surprised and prefer Boa's image here and not the weird one they tried overseas.
I am always cautious when it comes to exports though.... (the negative side of the whole industry)
but I wish them all luck!

Wonder Girls is slowly making progress in the Us but they seem to be catering to family and young children artist or those of the preteen age.
I just read about 2pm is coming to the US in 2010.
http://www.allkpop.com/index.php/full_story/2pm_in_usa_2010/I'm not a big 2pm fan but its been a while since the us had a successful boy band let alone a foreign on enter US market. They are super cute boys and their music make teeny boppers go crazy but are they really for the US?

Generally I have no protest over Korean artists breaking into the US market. BoA has done quite well, even though I'm not a fan of her English songs. Wonder Girls, too, have begun to grabbed the attention of many American media and even celebrities. As long as they produce music that is likable by the Americans, and they speak fluent English there shouldn't be a problem.
Not sure what the Korean fans think. Perhaps they are just wishing that their idols would focus on the Korean market and spend less time abroad, like how DBSK is right now. But then DBSK is only venturing into Japan, which is a neighbouring country and thus, not as much protest. Celebrities like BoA went to the US and when they come back for regular performances, they perform their English songs, which isn't exactly the Korean fans' taste, I think. Plus, English is not a major medium of language in Korea so the Korean fans may feel strange to it.
I anticipate 2PM's debut, though. I think they are capable of carrying American style music and image. Plus, three members have lived in USA before and the group wouldn't be as tensed up when they're in the country (I think Wonder Girls appear to be quite nervous when receiving interviews and interacting with the audience. But surprisingly, they can communicate in English better than I thought).

To be honest I don't think it's really possible for korean artist to be really successful in America. The states are just too big. Even if I don't understand Korean, their songs IMO still end up sounding better in their native language.
I am agree with aznboy189 ...it's difficult to kpop star to succeed in the states. Question of culture ? Are american people ready to accept asian pop music ? Who knows but it's sure that it will take a long moment!
