Anyone here find it annoying to see ABC/BBC/CBC's in TVB who can't speak proper Cantonese? I mean come on, there are non-Chinese people who speak better Canto than them.

I have found it annoying before, but it rarely bothers me . That's also because I probably speak like them too . sleep.gif" I find it more annoying if they can't act .

I've noticed it, but I dont find it annoying as much. Being a BBC myself, I play spot the BBC/ABC !!!

So long as it fits the character its ok. Like, just don't put any accented Cantonese speakers (Mandarin accent or English accent) in ancient series...totally ruins the credibility of the whole drama. If they play a character coming back from overseas, its alright...I don't mind.

But I do like those ABC/BBC/CBC who can speak fluent Canto better...I think Selena Li is pretty decent. Sarah Song (Miss Syd/Miss International) speaks really well too and is a host.

Moses Chan went to Australia to study for a bit but when i watched the coffee programme which he presented, his english wasnt really that good.

what really bugs me is when a person who cant speak english properly cant sing english songs properly. that really annoys me because they totally ruin the song.

^ same goes for those who can't speak proper cantonese and singing cantonese songs. I was watching 'The Voice' and this contestant (who I'm assuming came back from overseas) was really slurring his cantonese. He had to sing a classic and it sounded horrible...

^ Whose "she"?

I thought this thread was about those who are not good at speaking Cantonese as well as others. This applies to people who speak English but can't too? O.o I think Myolie was from Edinburgh? I think...and she speaks both languages well. Canto and English. She was born in HK though so yeah hahaha.

This is one of my biggest pet peeves (both Cantonese and English, but especially English). I really hate it when I watch interview shows and the host comments on how "fluently" someone speaks English (or Cantonese) when you can hear for yourself that their English (or Cantonese) sucks...I mean, do these people think we are stupid or naive enough to believe that they are "fluent"? Or perhaps these people don't understand what "fluent" means...I get annoyed and offended when I watch these types of shows because I feel that the host is either lying through their teeth or think that we (the audience) are very "dai bee" (loosely translated as "retarded" or "without intelligence").

TVB is actually pretty bad in this area as well...true, some of the actors/actresses that they hire truly do speak English (or Cantonese) well, but majority of them do not (in terms of the English piece)...what's really sad is that their production people have bad language skills too, as TVB is notorious for having bad English translations...have you read any of the English summaries on the back of their DVD boxes? Unbelievable! I mean, with a big company such as theirs that is trying to cater to the international market, they obviously have not invested enough time or money in this area....
