Full Version: CD/DVD drive not responding
AsianFanatics Forum > Hightech Corner > Hardware Happenings
Shoe.
I think this problem has been going on for quite a while but I only notice it today as I was trying to get my CD into the drive. I'm using an Acer laptop (retarded brand)... it's going 3 years old. I have to mention that it's a SLOT drive. I've been poking around the internet looking for causes and solutions, but have yet to find anything useful. All I found is slot drive in Macbooks but the thing is, I'm not using a Macbook. There's also this blinking amber light on the outside, which is usually green I suppose? blink.gif

I tried pressing the eject button to see if there's any CD in it, but there's no response. Afaik, the last time I ever inserted a CD in was when I was watching some movie, but right after that, I took out the disc and haven't been putting in any ever since.

To be more specific, I'm using Acer Aspire 5590, running on Windows XP Service Pack 3. My cd/dvd drive icon on my laptop has been blinking but I didn't really erm... notice it. Not sure if this contributes to the problem...this laptop of mine has overheating problems from the very start. I'm having it on a laptop cooling fan, with A/c on as well, but it still crashes on a normal day. weeping.gif

I'm planning to get a new laptop once Windows 7 is out but I need this laptop to last me until then... So..... help? Pretty please~! down.gif

P.s. It doesn't have to be a solution... I want to at least know the cause of it. But if you have the solution, by all means...... spill it!

Thanks in advance smile.gif

Even though a forum is a nice place to get answers, it's also good to whip a quick e-mail to ACER: http://support.acer-euro.com/emea.html (should be that one)

As for your issue:

1. Check if the system is recognizing your drive. (device manager and in bios)
2. If it is recnogized then do two things, in the OS load a disc in (there shouldn't be one in but if there is then it won't accept the current one - no harm in shoving a useless disc in)
3. Before the OS boots, load a boot up disc like ubuntu and see if that works.

Hopefully others would have more insightful replies.

I would look into a software related issues eg. driver/firmware and if it all looks fine then it comes down to a dead drive.

A possible resolution is external drives, see if your interested in spending under 50 dollars for one. I got my sony external RW for $35. Take that into consideration if you really really need to use a cd/dvd in your laptop.

Otherwise i would just grab a USB and burn an image on it on another machine then use daemon tools to mount the image and use it like that...lol...it's not too long before windows 7 is out.

Good luck

It's probably time to replace the drive. These things can die in just a few years. Very common.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. unsure.gif
