Susan Tse's role as a villain in "Beyond The Realm Of Conscience"

Susan Tse's popularity has gone up very rapidly recently. Just the phrase of "Jer jer(sister) wants to borrow something from you, it's your head" in <Beyond> is scary enough. In "Rosy Business", she played the role as the first wife(大奶奶), she was top in the internet for her popularity for being a "villain". Susan has been in the entertainment industry for 46 years. She joined TVB from ATV less than two years ago. Who is to say a 56 year old cannot have a career in this industry again?

Talking about her role as the Grand Empress in <Beyond>, her popularity is no less than that of Charmaine Sheh's "Lau Sam Ho" and Tavia Yeung's "Yiu Kam-Ling". In <Beyong>, she portrays a ruthless character, in order to protect her position as the almighty "Grand Empress", she constantly hurts Empress Cheng (鄭太妃) played by Mary Hon. The reporter asked whether she thinks her role was too ruthless? Susan disagreed "Grand Empress is the grand daughter of Kwok Chi Yee (Tang Dynasty General), she came from a very rich and powerful family, and Empress Cheng was a feet maid, from a very low class. They were just like the modern day first wife and the second wife (mistress). Under this circumstances, how can I as the Grand Empress not wanting to get rid of her. Just look at me, I worried someone might snatch my husband when I was young, and I worry about my son the Emperor when I am old. If you were me, am I a villain?"

While everybody was cursing the Grand Empress, Susan laughed and said the audience should watch the episode when the Emperor died. The Grand Empress was betrayed by Ma Yuan-Zhi (Joseph Lee) and ended up a painful death. Susan said "In this series, I use my eyes to act. At the beginning, I used my eyes to look at the concubines, but at the end, I used my eyes to show I was desolate. I was practicing that at home, I couldn't help "eyeing" my husband. He was so frightened and asked me why did I look at him like that for?"

Susan had put on 10 pounds in weight for that role. She said "The background of the series is in Tang Dynasty. It is well known that the women in that era were plump. In fact it is good that I put on a bit of weight because I do look a bit better on screen. Moreover, the head decorations are very heavy, when we were filming, we had to be so careful. We even had to wear a neck collar to protect our neck when we were not in front of the camera. I must praise the producer for considering all the details in the costume design. The higher the rank, the more sophisticated the head dress and the costume are, and everyone's decoration is different."

Susan Tse has gained a lot of popularity for the series "Beyond the Realm of Conscience". She has also become the hot favourite to be awarded Best supporting actress. There were reports that claimed she exchanged the award by having tea with the TVB executives. She immediately admitted that she often did have tea with the executives, however they didn't discuss about the awards. She would like to thank the company for giving her great opportunies and being nominated for Best supporting actress. She has never thought about competing over the awards and feels who ever receives the award truly deserve it. She joked that she still treats herself as a newcomer and would rather receive most improved newcomer.

TVB's anniversary series <Beyond> has recently become a hot topic, welcomed and applauded. On the fourth week of broadcast (Monday-Wednesday), its ratings continued to raise averaging 36 points, peaking at 40 points (approximately 2.54 million viewers). TVB invested in a 30,000 HKD feast to "reward the soldiers", namely Charmaine Sheh, Moses Chan and Susanna Kwan who attended the celebration. The cast had an abalone feast.

<Born Rich> ratings continue to fall, no celebration for them

After the series completed its filming, the main leads Gallen Lo and Ray Lui both went back to Mainland for work, while Kenix Kwok remains at home resting for her pregnancy. Although everyone came together for promotions, but the ratings does not compare with <Beyond>. When speaking of celebrations, <Born Rich> is excluded.

Last night, the celebration was held at Regal Kowloon Hotel having 8 tables. TVB general manager Stephan Chan arrived to support the series. The organizers arranged a "3 ambassadors feast" menu to honor the artistes, with a high value worth of 28,888 HKD for Ambassador Feast #1. Ambassador Feast #2 was worth 18,888 HKD. The only main difference between them were that the main artistes were honored with two abalones and goldfinch. The other 7 tables were offered an abalone and golden shark fin soup.

Susan, Kevin and Susanna are the 3 popular cast members from <Beyond> who had recently had many rumors going around. It was said that Susan Tse invited TVB executives out for coffee and chat. Kevin Cheng went to Thailand to pray to the gods for better luck. Susanna Kwan invested 20,000 HKD for diamonds to look pretty for the award ceremony.

Susan Tse out having coffee with TVB Executives, better chance of award?

Being a popular pick for the "Best Supporting Female Character", Susan Tse has been chased by reporters for interviews and even dragged her husband into the water. She said: "He has always been low-key, someone outside of the circle, I don't want to mix my work and private life together. I need to respect him." Did her husband complain to her? "He let's me do what I like to do. The only complaint he has is the pet dog I have. One time when I was in Malaysia promoting, he didn't let the dog to enter the room." What about the rumors saying that Susan's having coffee with the executives? She said: "I often have tea with the executives, but we really didn't talk about awards. I was notified that I was nominated for my role in <Rosy Business>, but I didn't think too much about it. I do thank TVB for giving me this opportunity, I have never thought about competing for an award, whoever wins is well deserved. Actually I treat myself as a newcomer, I rather get the Most Improved Award."
