Steven is awesome! A few months ago I barely knew who he is but now he's one of my favourite actors. I prefer watching his more recent dramas though. He is so funny in 'Better Halves' and so likeable in 'Safe Guard'.

I also read a short excerpt from his first book 'I am the relative of a sick person'. First, I lauged when reading the title cos I thought it has something to do with comedy. But when I read the excerpt I realised the title is to be taken literally. He talked about his childhood growing up in a complicated neighborhood and his mother who suffered from cancer.

He's just so talented and seems to have much more depth than many other artists. He writes books, is good at singing and interested in chinese history etc...

Didn't like him much before but after watching Safe Guards, I believe he's one of the better actors in TVB right now.

I found an "old" 2003 articles about Steven Ma. It talks about how he started in the entertainment industry I thought some of you might enjoy reading. There were other articles I found as well but they were "negative" rumours about him and I'm not sure if it is necessary to bring it up since it is also old rumours as well.

26 October is the birthdate of many celebrities including Steven Ma, Aaron Kwok and Deborah.

Real name being Ma Chee Wai, now known as Ma Chun Wai was born in a family of poverty. His dad is a bus driver. He spent his childhood days in Bak Tin. He scored an 'A' for Art, 'D' for his Chinese, 'E' for his English, top his Maths and stopped school after Secondary 5 to become a Sales Executive with a monthly salary of HKD20,000. He did not have a rich family background. Nor did he have outstanding results. But, he has a trait of all Chiu Chows --- determination and enthusiasm.

In 1993, he entered a Karaoke competition organised by Pioneer Laser and won the champion cup with 'Lei Heong Lan' (originally sang by Jacky Cheung). He also clinched a 3-year contract with Warner. However, he was jeered because of a promotional slogan the company had insisted on --- "He is not Leon, He is not Jacky". Long term jeering hurt his pride, diminished his morale and caused him to lose his contract with Warner.

In 1994, he was on the verge of withdrawing from the entertainment circle. However, his 'benefactor' revived his destiny.

In July 1999, his mom died and he hid himself in his house. Luckily, he was enlightened by a book. He had wanted to meet his true love by age 35 but he is prepared to achieve success in the publishing line by age 40.

He was born suave, charismatic and with a learned look. With Steven as Prince Consort in Dai Lui Fa, there wasn't a better candidate for the role. Since his 1998 role as the emperor in DMOD, a composer praised that he has got the studious and learned charisma similar to that of a true ruler.

In 1994, Annie Yi, the female lead in Steven's "No Longer Pessimistic" MTV was full of praises for Steven during her talk with a reporter. She said,"He really got what he currently has the hard way, I am truly happy that he has made it. I believe those with ability and talent will get their harvest someday. I was actually approached for the female lead in Lok Sun, it was such a pity that its filming clashed with my schedule, or I would have the opportunity to work with him again." She added,"Charisma is something which cannot be obtained using money or 'packaging'. I believe Steven will be the pet of TVB. He has a charming smile."

Steven said,"Since I worked in this line, many people have thought that I have high qualifications or even studied abroad. Actually I only have Secondary 5 education and I started working on a part-time basis in a cake shop when I was in Secondary 3 to help lessen my father's load.

After co-acting with Koi in Better Halves, I got to know some people who found my ancient image gracefully charismatic, that is probably why I can still survive for the time being in the entertainment world.

Steven has 3 elder sisters and a younger one. When he was younger, he was like the male lead in the Chambers of Red Dreams, being doted on by his sisters with a 'powdery' look. Growing up amongst females, Steven appeared shy and silent. He was in a boys school until Secondary 4, he got to know his first love through a friend.

"People's impression of me is that I'm very gentle and learned. They tend to think I'm frail and feeble. But I'm not what I look. I'm a very stubborn and strong-willed person. I know I do not have a good educational background, but I'm very keen to improve my self worth by reading widely. I believe stupidity/ignorance can be overcome by conscientiousness.

Exploring in the entertainment world has been hazardous for Steven who was getting despondent. He said,"¾G¹Å¿oand I entered the entertainment circle in 1993, but ¾G¹Å¿o's contract was with Polygram with effect from March. I signed my contract in September with Warner. We were the only ones fighting for Best Newcomer Award. If he gets the Gold Award, the Silver one will come to me. If I get the Gold one, the Silver one will go to him. Yet, I ended up being jeered off stage just because of a slogan "He is not Leon, Nor is he Jacky". My first show was at a shopping hub together with Lui Fong, 'fighting' against Polygram's ¾G¹Å¿o, Linda Wong and Leon Lai. I was bombarded with jeers the moment I step onto the stage. I managed to finish my song, but had to fight back my tears."

"Later, I hid myself in the hotel and cried. I was really depressed. In the end, I couldn't take it anymore and went to the hotel bar to turn to beer. I had my head low while sobbing to prevent people from recognising me. I have been jeered thoughout my 3 years in the entertainment world. My pride is gone. My legs go wobbly whenever I'm on the stage. Warner then declared that they will not extend my contract, so I was determined to withdraw from the entertainment world."

However, whoever is born must have a special talent. The talented Steven was spotted by Tseng (TVB management staff), his so-called benefactor, who pulled him up from his rock-bottom situation. Steven was soon given a role in FOJ4 in 1995. This was his stepping stone in his acting career. Steven is grateful to Tseng for her guidance. If not for her, Steven Ma would have vanished from the entertainment circle.

In 1998, Steven was given the emperor role in DMOD which was originally acted by Andy Lau in the first version. When trying out his role image, a reporter ever mocked that he doesn't look like an emperor even in the imperial robe, but Steven didn't mind. He said,"I was waiting for a good role. In 1998, I was given the chance to act in HH1. This was a great revolution to my adverse image. Audience wrote to me
saying that I suit the role of a doctor. But I was not conceited. I wanted to start from scatch since I was still new in the field."

In 1999, Ultra Protection did not win a good viewers rate. On top of this, Steven has to bear the pain of losing his mom who has been cancer-strickened for more than 10 years but finally succumbed to tuberculosis. What pains Steven most was he wasn't able to see her off. He isolated himself at home and landed in a state of despondency.

"A good friend encouraged me by telling me a story by his teacher -- You can never diminish the pain brought to you by the death of your loved ones, yet this type of pain cannot be consoled by any logic, because in life, there must be tolerance. And being faced with deaths of loved ones, you will learn to treasure the ones remaining around you. It will also make you stronger."

"I was in tears on reading that. I started reading his teacher's writings. They are all very aspiring. They made me realise that true life has to go through experiences and understand and accept that the cycle of life, old age, sickness and death is natural.

Towards illness, Steven has deep thoughts. He was a victim of an illness "Panic Attack" 4 years ago. The symptoms of such an illness are sudden tightening of nerves, giddiness, freezing of limbs, trembling hands, breathing problems, heart problems. "The main cause comes from stress. If I cannot calm myself down or relax myself, and if I am always on the Get-Ready mode, the illness will relapse. These few months, I suffered relapses and once, I even had to stay home for 10 days. There was another time when I was poising for a magazine photoshot, my hand trembled nonstop suddenly and he had to be rushed to the hospital.

No wonder Steven always felt that it's a dog's life in the entertainment circle. He hopes to retire by age 40 and concentrate on his publishing business. "My first job was a Sales Executive selling textbooks. I set up a publishing company last year. I believe it's a type of bond. My application to be a social worker, when I was 16, was unsuccessful. So I decided to work with the local social organisations and Anti-Suicide association to write my first book "Why Suicide?". I will be publishing another book "I am Patient's family" and it will be out end of this month. I sought help from an association, and apart from my own story, there are 10 more touching real life stories."

Steven's love life is yet to be fulfilled. Before he enter the entertainment circle, he had a few girlfriends who loved him for his filial piety. However, they left him because he was unromantic. "Actually someone unromantic can be said to be stable emotionally. (Reporter nods) Those who are looking for a romantic love life will still settle for the stable later on in marriage. Once I had a bicker with a male friend who was popular amongst females. My friend said if men weren't bad, women won't like. That time, I was 20 years old. My ideal girlfriend must be like ¸­µ£, have charisma like §d­Å½¬, and must have a frock of long hair. Now I only ask for true love and telepathy, I don't even mind even if she was a dance hostess before."

Steven said he would definitely be a 100% good husband and father due to his father's influence. His father always taught him that a good man is a man of justice and uprighteousness. His father also said that supporting a family of wife and child is the basic duty of a man. When asked whether he is still friends with the female leads in his previous rumours, Astrid Chan, Ada Choi and Sonija Kwok, Steven answered sternly,"Astrid and I have no problems remaining as friends, she had disagreement with Chan, not me. But she is blissful in her relationship so we seldom contact. As for Ada, please (to all media) do not give us pressure anymore. We are still good friends and colleagues. (When reporter wanted to mention Sonija) About 'her', no comments!"

To foster good relationship is a form of desire. Yet, to keep a distance from a conditional relationship is another form of desire. Sonija publicly criticised Steven, revealing her adverse self, no longer being a wise beauty as what was bestowed on her.

Steven, on facing previous 3-mth girlfriend's criticism, still maintains his grace without rebutting her.

I think these radio shows are so cool! I listened to the last one and it was either the 2rd or 3rd hour of the show I lost track It was good though cause I think Steven Ma knew the host to an extent where he seemed comfortable speaking of his feelings about the paparazzi, negative reports that were written in
the past about him and his experiences in the last few years that he was not with TVB.

There was a part of the show where he said he enjoyed traveling alone because he enjoys the freedom of waking up when he wants and not having to wait for people ... he HATES waiting for people and he's usually on time. I thought that bit was interesting because I personally don't like to travel alone and don't know of others who enjoy traveling alone either. He just seems to be a very lonely person. He's really BIG on reading Chinese history (another activity that involves being alone) as well I just think that's so boring LOL Sorry that thought has been lingering on ever since I have been listening to him on the radio. It was interesting to know the personal side of him other then his talented acting and singing skills.

Glad you liked the radio clips, maggimoo! I'm afraid Steven won't appear on radio that soon cos he should be filming by now. Besides, artists usually appear on radio when they're promoting some series. But I'll keep my eyes open. It's too bad that Margie and Lai Lik Chi don't have this "superman" radio show anymore. They had really good guest and were so entertaining.

Unfortunately, I have no idea how to listen to metro radio interviews cos they have so many famous guest. But my chinese is very limited and the metro radio website is very confusing.

I enjoyed that "Reunion" show the most cos he was singing all those songs and chatted away with the host. Lol, that traveling alone thing is funny. I prefer to travel with one or two friends cos we can look out for each other. But for a 30 something guy this is another story. I can see the upside of traveling alone but I'd feel lonely sometimes.

I think it's sweet that he still lives with his dad and one sister. He seems to be quite family oriented and macho (due to what he said in "family affairs).

Anyway, here's an article from about a week ago, recording the success of "Safe Guards". Don't know how this series would've turned out had Charmaine or Myolie been casted instead but I think Steven looks more compatible with Elaine than with Myolie. So Steven has apparently "booked his place" in the producer's last drama before Lee retires. I certainly have no qualms about that.

I wonder why you hear news about Safe Guards towards the end of the series or even AFTER the series has aired. Every time I hear news about it it's about how successful it WAS but they never did any promotions during the air time. I just think that's really unfair

It was a great script with great actors I think it just deserves a little more promotions on it. I mean they went way over board with their marketing on series like War and Beauty, A Life Made Simple, War Of In Laws, etc ... I never heard that mentioned during that interview show but a subtle hint of embarrassment from Steven Ma and then the host goes "don't worry that was all I was going to ask you" The words "female companion" or any words related to that in Chinese was NEVER mentioned during that part of the interview. BUT we can only guess why Steven Ma was "laughing somewhat embarrassingly."

I still kind of think it's a little weird to travel on your own but after what you took out of the interview it makes more sense that he could have been traveling with a "female companion" haha ... THAT would be more logical thinking then "I like to travel on my own" LOL Especially if this was a leisure type of vacation it only makes sense to want share it with someone other then yourself.

umm...how is it possible that bernice could look remotely like a 16 year old??!! i am very doubtful she could pull it off.. but i'm actually quite doubtful that steven could pull off looking like a middle-aged man altho he is indeed in his 30s, because steven just has such a cute small boy face...but perhaps because of that, the pairing will turn out ok..

Yesterday Steven and Bernice were filming for their new series Dat Wai Hang Dong 《突圍行動》. The scene talks about the two of them developing their first love for each other when they were 16 and 17 years old. Steven, who plays a 17 year old role, wore a t-shirt, and a big backpack. He joked, "It's really funny. I need to act like I was 10 years ago. The director wants me to chase her and make her smile. I think it's so naive and it's so hard to stand it! (Will this make you reminsce your first love?) It has already been 10 years! We were at the beach and also riding bicycles."

As with Bernice, she has to wear shorts, a backpack, and a ponytail. Playing a 16 year old girl, she said, "I think it's pretty funny, maybe because of the real age difference. But I don't think it's hard to stand. When I was in school, dating was not like this since I didn't know how to ride a bike or swim. We would usually just go to the library to read books."

i heard steven is really famous in HK rite now and he is just so welcome by a lot of people. sometimes i would listen to his songs and it sounded so good too.

Currently Steven Ma and Bernice Liu are busy filming for their new series “Breakthrough Action”. A day earlier, both of them were filming outdoor scenes at Chung Hom Kok. This scene is about them remembering their youth, at that time Bernice was 16 years old. For her appearance, she has combed two pigtails as well as wore a school uniform. Steven portrays a 20-year old university student. Steven has a crush on Bernice and meets up with her at Chung Hom Kok.

This scene required a rainy scenery, however the sun was shining. So the drama team needs to wheel out the water wagon to reproduce ‘artificial’ rain. In addition to the rain, they were also exposed to the sun, so they had a hard time. The worst was that there are many mosquitoes in these suburbs. Bernice and the drama team all became a target for the mosquitoes, but Steven didn’t have any. He was actually teased by numerous people that his flesh wasn’t sweet enough. Steven will help Bernice ease her itching as he chats with her the whole time when they don’t have to film.

I love your animations YHY! The one that doesn't work looks funny. I hated that Ben person in Safe Guards! He was so evil!!! But at the end he got what he deserved.
