I have to strongly agree with tamaya and strawberry67.
Why is he not nominated?? That's is probably one of his best work so far and knowing the fact that Linda got nominated for best actress for it and he is not. That is just waaaayy too saddening.

Tamaya, when i sign in, i usually go straight to Steven's forum, i don't really bother to read about other news (which is bad) that's why i am left behind with regards to the tvb awards nomination. What you said is true, i am so so dissapointed with the way tvb is treating Steven. So unfair to him for all his hardwork done this year and despite him being such an "obedient" artist all this while. I wonder what was the response of his fans in HK. Anything mentioned in his fansite? I have not register yet, been busy lately.

Not even a chance for winning anything?! Zilch.
From the onset, Steven never had a chance of winning the best actor award, (given his series ratings), but being nominated would have accorded him a pretense of having a chance to win. But that pretense is ripped off now with his non-nomination, and as such, he has lost much face in the HK entertainment industry. Can you imagine him having to constantly deal with nosy, and generally callous reporters concerning this?
I wonder what was the response of his fans in HK. Anything mentioned in his fansite?
Steven fans were flabbergasted & incredulous by the news. Most fans knew that Steven’s chance of winning the best actor award this year was slim to zilch, but we did hold out hope that he might get the favorite character award. But it had never ever occurred to us that his name would be totally off the list, especially glaring given Linda’s 2 nominations. Don’t know about his HK fans’ reactions but as to his Mainland fans, they had flooded Baidu TVB site with their disbelief and indignant. But mostly old-timer fans have gone underground, (so as not to offend fans of other stars with their candid comments) to ‘talk’ among themselves. So by contrast, outwardly, their own websites remain considerably calm, but emotions run high below their surface.
Why is he not nominated?? Don’t know. But it sure has nothing to do with his acting ability nor reflect it. The lawsuit might have had. Who knows!
However, there might be another reason which I truly hesitate to say, lest I start a baseless rumor. Please be cautioned that this is an unsubstantiated rumor originated from HK discussion forum on Sep 19. A poster said that his friend who is part of “Dogs” production crew mentioned that Steven will be leaving TVB after wrapping up “Dogs” due to heart problem. That ‘bit of info’ was reposted onto Baidu Steven site, which was quickly deleted because it was not verified. I had refrained from posting it here for that very reason. Alarmed fans, hoping for some sort of verification, got on Steven TVB blog pleading for an answer. It is yet to be verified by either Steven or TVB official.
Anyway, Steven fans, do brace yourself for the possibility of Steven calling it quits in TVB and maybe in showbiz.
Those who read this unverified ‘bit of info’ please do not spread this outside this thread, as I have stated, it is just a rumor until proven otherwise. Thanks!
Steven Ma and his then manager, Frankie Fan 范志荣, set up a joint company in 1999, but because of stock share conflict will contest latter’s lawsuit against him. Yesterday, Frankie (Sep 27) filed his lawsuit in high court claiming that when Steven divvied up the company new stocks, his (Frankie) share proportion was inequitably low, and that Steven had also illegitimately stripped him of his title of company president. Therefore, Frankie appeals to the court to rule that he should be given his ‘proper’ share of the company stocks, and to order Steven to turn in the company account books, and to re-compensate him for past proceeds.
Plaintiff (Frankie Fan)’s lawsuit against defendant (Steven Ma) claims that in Feb 1999 they jointly (each with 50% ownership) set up an entertainment company (式比奥娱乐有限公司). The same year in March, they purchased a unit with car park in 何文田山道加林阁 building complex under the company’s name. Plaintiff claims that in 2001 November, defendant re-issued 9998 new stocks to himself, thus, greatly diluting plaintiff’s own stock share from 50% to 0.01%. Subsequently, defendant (Steven) transferred plaintiff’s original shares to his sister’s name(马淑仪) . In 2005 September, plaintiff’s president title was (illegitimately) stripped, and sister (马淑仪) was given that same title. Plaintiff sued defendant for a breach of contract and will have the court decide the outcome.
Steven was preoccupied with filming “Dogs” and responded thus: “My lawyer received the litigation notice on Friday (Sep 26). I’ve only these 4 words to describe this whole situation “mo ming kei miu” (bizarre) Since he wishes to use the legal system to settle this matter, accordingly, I’ll let my lawyer handles it.”
He revealed that he has not seen Frankie for ages: “These 5 years we had not collaborated or seen each other. Thus, all news concerning him, I read from the newspapers.”

If what is reported is true due to health reason, then we wish him well. He could take some time off and when he recovers he could make a comeback. But tvb should at least him give him a nomination. Whether he will get the award or not is a different issue. As one of his loyal fans, i will support Steven in whatever he wants to do. As for the lawsuit, i believe he can't just change or transfer the company's shares to his sister's name without the other party giving his consent to it. There are documents that requires signature when it comes to all this transfer or changing name.

Practicing 中庸 (The Golden Mean of Confucianism)*
Recently, a friend said to me: “You’re doing very well these days!” Dim lah! Don’t get too proud wo!” When I heard this, I smiled inwardly. For sure, this friend doesn’t know me well enough.
I’ve been in the industry for more than a decade; the period neither long nor short; the experience itself is very personal, impossible to articulate in a few words. Every artiste’s success or failure has its own reasons. Furthermore, how many (of those reasons) were within their control? Artistes are basically passive. Indeed, how many artistes can claim their success was solely due to their own effort? Opportunities are given them by others. To succeed or fail is another matter. But for sure, one should always be prepared and ready when opportunity knocks.
I have always believed that success happens not only due to a person’s effort but also due to every associated factor, no matter how minor; including all the people, tasks, things and time, all co-operating together; when heaven, earth, time and fortune are aligned, then success will take place.
Both feet on the ground; this being one of my principles. The vicissitudes of success or failure notwithstanding, the knees will not fold, and the feet will not leave the ground. Come stormy weather or bright sunshine, the feet still remain firmly planted on the ground. This sense of being genuinely grounded is what I need.
Happiness and sadness to me will never be too excessive. I will not be extremely happy nor be extremely sad, only wish to keep my calm.
Perhaps you’ll say I’m being too discipline. I find contentment in it. If things are felt too extremely then it will provoke an equally if not more extreme opposite happening.
My friends, don’t worry about me. The vagaries of human affairs are unpredictable. Today, heart wrenching grief; tomorrow, teary-eyed happiness. Since there’s no foretelling of things to come, might as well be down-to-earth, look to the future, live for the present, and be ready to receive tomorrow.

Tamaya's note: The Golden Mean of Confucianism advocates moderation, and avoidance of excessiveness and deficiencies so as to achieve a balanced and harmonious life.
Not being nominated is a big setback to his career, not to mention bruising his ego and making him lose face, but Steven will get back on his feet and get past his disappointment. I especially picked this prose to share with his fans here, so that you all know that Steven will bounce back on his feet, soon. Give him time.

haha! Steven fans out in force on Baidu TVB, bumping up all his threads to front page (10 or more) daily just to vent.
Like this running conversation which I thought was really funny:
Where was Steven in the Lighting Ceremony last night? I searched until my eyeballs almost fell out and yet I still couldn't find him? where did he go? Is it because of that scary makeover forced upon him by TVB that he decided to skip it totally?
Ni Ye Ye di.. (in DOMD xiao gui zi's favorite expletive) Not only did you not nominate him but also gave him such a terrible makeover How can he even attend the anniversary ceremony looking like that! I really want to bomb TVB! 你爷爷的 不但不给人家提名 还给人家弄一个那么恐怖的造型 那个造型连台庆都不能出席 我现在真想炸了tvb……
that curly hairdo, I thought he looks cute in it 那个卷发造型吗? 我觉得挺可爱的。
Steven himself hates that look Said he can't stand looking at himself in the mirror. 马浚伟本人非常讨厌那个造型 他说他看着镜子觉得自己好恶心
And then as usual without fail, if a thread is long enough, some poster(s) will post something to ripple the fans' adulation. And then all hell breaks loose, fun eh? Lol!
These two threads are like daily fixtures on the Baidu tvb front page 1) silent tribute to Tavia Yeung and Steven Ma 2) The most pitiful this year is Steven Ma
But mostly the bumped threads are singing his praises. Baidu tvb posts are trite amusement, good for a laugh.
Btw, Steven's tvb blog has been updated. He preparing to shoot tvb 2009 calendar so his hairdresser is trying to straighten up his hair for obvious reason. Poor Steven! Haha!

Here it comes, the gleeful, barbed arrows of speculations and jabs.
The oldest group of actresses in history lined the front row. Only 3 "youngsters" Giga Lai, Ada Choi and Charmaine Sheh graced the front with "youth".
Those who are 'in' and those are 'out'
Out:- (physically) Both Mr. Mas (Joe and Steven), who just last year stood side by side with the other favorites. Here today, gone tomorrow. Nat Chan, plucked from the prestigious center. Bernice Liu, who has yet to sign her contract. And all of Stephen Chan's male favorites. (non-actors) Mr. Chan himself is very conspicuously absent. Is he out too? Banished to Iceland? Raymond Lam, away, filming in China. (personal choice?)
Steven is involved in the photo shoot for tvb 2009 calender. If he's leaving, they don't have to include him. Still don't know what's the reason for not nominated :-(

Most probably he didn't toe the company line. Who knows. He looks really tired and drawn in his recent video clip. He looks as if he could fall asleep right there and then on his seat, despite his hairdresser messing around with his hair, so exhausted he looks. Of course, that hairdo didn't help, either.
Read what Jessica Hsuan wrote in her blog, it might give an inkling to how TVB works:

Date Posted: Oct 6, 08 - 10:44 PM Message:Hi Cute Little Piglet, Sorry to let you know that this year will be my first time not taking part in the calendar shooting. Reason is because my contract with TVB will be expiring in January and I haven't had time to discuss with them about renewing my contract. They have asked me 4 times already, but I wanted to wait till I finish shooting. The past 4 months have been too tiring. Would rather concentrate on shooting. Therefore their decision is normal. A very common case. I was not invited to the TVB Anniversary Lighting Ceremony for the same reason. This is TVB
Hope I haven't disappointed you all. luv jessica

It, brings to us, space! It, has always been very mysterious, very strange, and unfathomable. Perhaps I will ask: Today, what should I do? The right thing? The wrong thing? Anyway, right wrong is hard to separate! To separate? Whom to ask? If already a reality, no need to ask, Yet to be a reality, just do it, no need to ask, either! So, the choices, where are they? I’ll keep in mind what Today can do, let it decides then. But, I’ve never asked, never asked Yesterday or Tomorrow, what they want Today to do? Never asked Yesterday how it spent its day? Also, never asked Tomorrow what it wants to do, either? I’d thought they communicate with each other, When in fact, they don’t know each other at all. Yesterday never knew Today exists. And Today is not concern with Yesterday’s or Tomorrow’s fate. As for Tomorrow, its sight is set so high it spares no thought for those behind it. Consequently, though plainly intertwined as a pulse, they go their own separate way! Wrong! I was wrong! I was too permissible with them! Wrong! I was wrong! I didn’t tell Yesterday that Today was its child; I didn’t tell Today that Yesterday was its mother; I didn’t tell Tomorrow that without Yesterday & Today, there’s no you! Wrong! I was wrong! If only I had taught Today well from the start. Then the problems with Yesterday and Tomorrow would not have occurred. And I will not have to worry about those three! Fortunately, it’s still not too late, seize the present, Teach Today well.

Thanks for another transalation on the Steven's book. OMG they really removed the last video clip on his tvb blog. You are right, he looked so tired in the whole video especially his eyes, there are not eyebags but luggage! I do hope that Steven will stay on so that all his fans can continue to watch his series one after another. If he's leaving, then we will not have so much opportunity to see him on screen. Nevertheless, we all want the best for him and support him in whatever he wants to do.

Drunken style of writing – World
Staring at the ceiling, a light’s there; Lying flat, absorbing the feel of being alive. Humans will at times doubt, Or perhaps ponder the value of being alive, But, reality or perhaps the present, often times, At that very moment, cannot be fully grasped. Perhaps at that moment will question The flavor of existence: Sugary? Sour? Sweet? Hot? If so, might as well ask oneself this: “How’s life today? How to live tomorrow?” Eyes closed; Going to sleep? Or drunk? Or tired? Or feeling guilty? Once, someone asked: While lying on the bed, Staring silently at the ceiling, what did one see? Perhaps you will say I saw the ceiling, that’s it. Or perhaps, you saw the world beyond the ceiling. Once, that same person also asked: Below the ceiling, What’s there? People? Things? Who? What? Within the same space, its past existences Are beyond our wishful thinking or imagination. 50 years or perhaps 100 years ago? Who? Who had once lain in this patch of hazy, boundaryless juncture? Mulling: Who’s who? Where’s who? Doing what? Thinking of whom? Living? Waiting? For whom? Then, with eyes open or eyes close, will the world vary? Perhaps the world cannot be seen with eyes, or be heard with ears, Or be touched with hands and feet, or be breathed with lungs Or be tasted with tongue. In that case…use the heart then! Perhaps I can use my heart to observe, to sense, to feel, to experience. Your world is up to you to imagine. Mine, belongs to me.

Steven once mentioned that he has 2 distinct personalities: a contemplative (pensive?), private being who embraces solitude at night, and a cheerful, public persona who embraces sunshine at daylight. Judging from his blog writings and from his latest book, Steven indeed comes across that way - dual personalities, and more. He is an introspective thinker, who sometimes entangles himself into a knots because of his tendency to over analyse stuff. Yet, he is also this blithe guy who writes such trivial but amusing subjects like "which comes first, the egg or the hen?" or "Stinky tofu" Or "the cat always gets the blame." etc.
So, in his book, the 'heavy' stuff is cleverly offset by his 'light' stuff for easy reading and enjoyment.

Don't worry about it. I was just getting offline when I 'saw' you. For starters, if you don’t mind me saying this, when you quote me, just pick out the relevant sentences from my post and delete the rest. That way, reading your post is easier on the eye.
As to visiting his tvb blog, there’s the pix and videos to look at. Unbelievable as it is, there’s this ludicrous award that TVB has come up with for its 41st anniversary ceremony. The award is for the most hits blog. So just by your clicking on Steven’s blog, (no msg necessary) you are in fact helping Steven along the race to most hits blog award. Mindless, meaningless and totally making fools of fans.
Anyway, It seems together with 1874 , “Landgull” is the favorite piece among the fans, which I didn’t know until now. I guess birds of a feather do flock together, but what is interesting is the different vibes/feelings elicited from that essay. Same essay, different viewpoints and feelings. I’ll translate Chicken egg first, and then 1874. Steven must have also like 1874 since it is the 1st essay in his book.
There's no updated news on Steven just yet.

I've never seen Steven appearing in the top ten. Do you leave message in his yahoo blog and has he ever replied?
I seldom leave messages on his blogs, and if I do, they are usually well wishes like during his birthday or festival occasions. Btw, his birthday is coming up soon. His websites are assembling fans' messages to him, like: reviews/thoughts on his book(s) & series, birthday wishes, and anything under the sun you wish to say to him. Steven can read English, so if you so interested you can have your well wishes included in the birthday scrapbook.
Actually in the earlier stage of his Yahoo blog like 2006 & 2007 Steven interacted quite a bit with his fans. There was once this 'unrest' among fans that Steven had to step in to mediate. (lol!) But as his 2008 postings dwindle so did his responses. But, he has never responded in TVB blog; which, btw, is his only in name. His tvb blog is managed by tvb blog manager. The posted messages are not written by him, and the essays are all reposted, (horribly abridged, I might add) from his own Yahoo blog. He also has a copycat Sina blog opened on his behalf by TVB.
Yes, once Steven’s tvb blog even shot up to #3. It was such an anomaly, a fluke, that all his webmasters, and I immediately captured the unbelievable documenting image for posterity. (And of other images depicting his 3rd position.) Prior to that, his blog had never even got into top 10, much less #4 and then incredibly into #3. All the celestial and earthly bodies must have had aligned during that ephemeral period, But alas, fleeting it was indeed! (Can’t remember how long his 3rd position lasted, that’s how much I care.) Anyway, it was heady and ‘exciting’ while it lasted. In fact, I didn’t know about his meteoric climb on TVB blog until a stunned forumer, (a non-Steven fan, at that) mentioned it here in Steven’s thread. Check out post # 582 TVB blog #4
In his Yahoo blog, "Ma Zai’s Corner", Steven, after reading the plethora of praises left on his blog, had this to say to his blog readers:

Actually, what I want to write today is my thoughts on this blog. The reason for this blog, from the very onset carries only one thought…. which is, hopefully, be you my fans or not, blog friends or not, strangers or not, that you all can freely chat on this blog. But more so, I hope through this medium you can all relate to or share my very limited life experiences.
However, I want to stress this; my blog may be a bit dull. But, that is the exact reason why I, Mazai, started this blog in the first place. This is neither an entertainment blog nor a fans blog. This blog belongs to a regular person called Ma Chun Wai, who wishes to use the most advanced & convenient way of communicating with strangers and friends, alike.
Mazai is very ordinary, truly ordinary; so, please…don’t put me on a pedestal.
Whatever we can share…let’s share ba! Whatever we can experience…let’s experience ba!
But, brothers and sisters, I am just like you, only an ordinary person! It’s always been that way! But, believe me, what I can do, or perhaps, what I should do is all very simple.
So please…let’s all of us be a good and useful person. Haha!!!! Now I've given people another chance to laugh at me lah!! Laugh at me? So what? Haha!!!
Chicken lays eggs; eggs incubate chicks; that’s the law of nature. As to the question of which came first, chicken or egg? Since elementary school, I had already heard of it, only that all these years I had never analyzed it.
So, while the whim lasts, let me hereby publish my ‘grand’ stance! First off, I want to make it clear that this question of chicken first or egg first is, in itself, flawed. Think about it, duck, goose, bird, and for that matter, all fowls, or perhaps all egg-laying species like snake, dinosaur, or turtle; they all have this ‘first, later’ situation. So, why chicken only? Why not turtle?
Back to topic, the supporters of ‘chicken first’ viewpoint contend that the egg must be first formed inside the chicken before it can materialize. Therefore, per their rationale, without the chicken, there will be no eggs. Furthermore, if the supporters are religious to boot, they will obviously believe that all creatures, great and small, were created by God. Just like the human race, Adam and Eve came first, only then came their billions of progeny. What more a mere chicken?
As for the supporters of ‘egg first’ viewpoint, they believe that all life on earth either evolved from marine micro-organisms or from various unicellular organisms. Some say the humans were originally a kind of marine animals. When they got on land, they underwent metamorphosis, and in the process developed four legs, duly becoming land animals. To survive in their new environment, they evolved and gradually learned to stand upright. Over time, they became the Neanderthals. And later? Need you ask? Therefore, supporters believe that the egg evolved from a micro-organism, first as an ovum, later as an egg with shell. When life inside the egg grows into a chick, it cracks the shell and gets out.
Both the above viewpoints have their own merits. I have no religious faith, nor am I knowledgeable on anthropology, so to me, both viewpoints are credible but doubts remain. Since no definite conclusion can be had, let’s look at it from a different angle, using a different method to get to the bottom of it!
One day, in a certain preschool classroom…
Teacher asked: “Class, who do think came first, chicken or the egg? Raise your hand to answer.”
At hearing the teacher’s question, the children started talking animatedly among themselves. After considering, four-year old Ne Ne raised her hand, and said: “Chicken!”
Teacher: “Ne Ne, Why?”
Ne Ne: “I’ve seen Mama cut open a chicken.”
Teacher:” Haha! What’s that got to do with this?”
Ne Ne: “I saw…an egg…inside the chicken’s tummy!”
Teacher: “That’s no unusual. But it doesn’t mean chicken came first ya!”
Ne Ne: “Why not? Chicken’s tummy has egg, but I’ve cracked open an egg before….inside, it’s all yellow. No chicken!”
Teacher: “…..”
Not only was the teacher lost for words by Ne Ne’s answer, I was too. As always, a child’s purity is precious!
So, I believe the chicken came first!

bagua (gossip) news
I suspect Steven named the little girl Ne Ne (妮妮) in his chicken egg essay after one of his HK fans, whom he had mentioned in his Yahoo blog 2 years ago. Apparently, earlier on, Steven received a letter from Ne Ne’s mother telling him about Ne Ne being his loyal fan, and that she suffers greatly from a chronic, painful disease. So Steven wrote a msg in his blog rallying his fans to drop a line or two to comfort Ne Ne. From then on among Steven’s fans, Ne Ne came to be known as the “little sister”. Fast forward to AJCL promotion, Ne Ne got to meet Steven in person, and he was stunned to see Ne Ne looking so tall (170 cm) and grown-up, not the little girl he had pictured in his mind at all.
That picture of Doraemon (Ding Dong) (p 78) in his book is actually a photo of a fan's (♀如 ) present to him. She presented a ‘bouquet’ of Ding dongs to him during one of his public functions in China just this summer. So you can imagine that fan’s excitement at seeing her present making it to Steven’s book. That essay talks about Steven wishing he has a portal door to access different dimensions, just like in the cartoon series.

She presented a ‘bouquet’ of Ding dongs to him during one of his public functions in China just this summer. So you can imagine that fan’s excitement at seeing her present making it to Steven’s book. That essay talks about Steven wishing he has a portal door to access different dimensions, just like in the cartoon series.
strawberry: I would love to read about your take on Steven's prose essays so far, especially on Landgull. It is intriguing to find the same essay (Landgull) elicited so many different reactions from the readers; some analyses were so profound, they didn't even occur to me. (lol)
Yes i know when is Steven's because it is just one day before mine. Well, i wanted to drop him a birthday wish but i can't. I have regsitered with tvb.com but don't know why i have a problem logging in
Tamaya, i am sorry. I can't do the "quote" thing from my computer today so pls forgive me if my reply is difficult to read. I highly suspect the ranking in tvb.com is controlled by tvb themselves. The blog is written by 1 of the writer and the videos and photos are posted by them. Have you ever noticed each time the top ranking is usually occupied by the artists which their series is currently airing? I think this is one of the way to boost their popularity............
strawberry67: If you have correctly registered, then to login TVB blog: on the right side, way at the bottom, click on "login", then sign in. Steven's tvb blog is wacky today, its msgboard has lost half its messages.
To respond to me, don't click the "QUOTE" button, instead click "REPLY" on the right most corner. A reply box will pop up, you may then edit the words within the quote brackets. You may want to preview your msg before posting.
"Have you ever noticed each time the top ranking is usually occupied by the artists which their series is currently airing? I think this is one of the way to boost their popularity............"
I don't keep up with blog hits so didn't notice that coincidence, if any. But I went back to check when Steven's blog cracked the top 3 ranking; it was in June, way after the airing of his two series. So that theory doesn't apply to Steven at all.
QUOTE (strawberry67 @ Oct 13 2008 11 32 AM)
This is well written by Steven. I feel that he treasures every moment in his lives and whenever he sees something, he could put it into many different meaning. He could do a lot of things alone and he will do it with flying colors. A man who has sympathy, respectable and can accept different point of view in life.
But fans have read much more into that essay that I. Somewhat different from how I felt, guess, I didn't dig deeply enough between the lines. I feel that Steven is at peace with himself, with the world and actually savoring his solitude, unlike what his other fans wrote. Eta: Although there is that sense of loss and sadness when the gull flew off, after disdainfully declining his offer to stay. But he did get over his despondence with rationale. But what I like most about this piece is how in just few words, he could draw his readers into that moment, at the same time, evoking different feelings from them.
What they wrote in addition to my opinion:
---bird and man == analogy about society/person pressuring another to conform
---the bird is the personification of Steven himself. 1) like bird, he wishes to fly free, proud and unencumbered. 2) like bird, he's flying alone and proud, but where to?? He has resting stops but no home in sight. Why is the gull flying and where is it going? Where is Steven heading to, when is he going to find what he's looking for?
---gull/man transient meeting is likens to his "you yuan wu fen" transient love relationship, predestined to meet, predestined to part. Or an unrequited love for someone.
---the loneliness in Steven is exposed because he finds it easier to speak his thoughts to a bird who won't judge him. Lonely bird flying over lonely man in a lone ship drifting on a vast sea.
--- that the solitude of night and the vastness of the sea only served to accentuate Steven's loneliness.
So what do you think of the fans' analyses? Imagination runs wild? So which theory do you support: Chicken or egg first? Did you guess Steven's answer? I'm with him, chicken first.

In your last post, you left out the closing quote code.[ /quote]

Latest news flash for those not in the loop: Steven, Julian Cheung, Tavia Yeung, & Kingdom Yuen will participate in producer 徐遇安's modern series in Nov. Julian has yet to commit but the chance is high that he will. The pairing of Steven and Julian is reminiscent of 徐遇安's The Return of the Cuckoo. So keeping my fingers crossed.
p/s but Steven has lots of support from mainland fans and non-fans in Baidu TVB; a big flap over his non-nomination is gathering steam there.
Eta: Previously, it was supposed to be Sonija and Steven pairing in what is now Moses and Myolie's 唐伯虎点秋香 (Tong Bak-Fu & Chau Heung) series. There were actually news report in which both Sonija and Steven, in separate occasion, confirmed their participation. baidu tvb When the news broke, Steven fans were really upset at the thought of him pairing with Sonija. I've been quietly reading stuff on here, so many thanks again to you for translating stuff.
I am also very disappointed that Steven has not been nominated for anything; what is it? Is he too old? Not "hot" enough? It's bloody ridiculous.
There are some people on the lists that frankly do not deserve to be there at all. Steven is a much worthier candidate for an award, but he gets pushed to one side. I feel rather frustrated with TVB sometimes.

Of course, he is definitely not too old, nor is he ugly or anything, but then TVB don't see things that way - they are so focused on promoting younger, "hotter" artistes regardless of their talent, that people like Steven are ignored because they think there isn't anything worth promoting.
TVB tries to please fan-girls too much sometimes. It's like a beauty contest; all style and no substance.
Very disappointed.

Yay! Silent readers surfacing. Thank you! Xiexie!
Steve –UK: Age has had nothing to do with Steven’s non-nomination. Moses is a few months older than him while Kevin Cheng is actually a year older than them. I’m not going to second guess TVB; the fact is, Steven’s screwed this year, so we can only look forward to next year.
Dawnyee: Except for book translations, I always tagged my sources to my translations unless it's an oversight. 2 reasons for omitting the posting of the original prose essays:
First: too laborious and tedious to type each essay into the computer. Second and more importantly: infringement on the book copyright. A big no no!
Strawberry67 Wow! I’m impressed by your multi-quotes. Way to go, girl! As for Salt Traders aka Sweetness in the Salt – rumored to air Feb 9 but I can’t vouch for its factuality. It all started with an enterprising Steven fan surfing some obscure website, the source found the info and promptly shared it on Steven fansites. Later, an equally enterprising Tavia fan saw the info, and onto Tavia fansites, it went. Then lurker(s) abound industriously spread the juicy morsel all over the internet including Baidu TVB and this very forum. So take this info with a grain of salt. Like the saying goes; garbage in, garbage out. I’m just mindlessly repeating what I read online.

1874 I like to meditate, sometimes got so into it that I became quite peculiar. I, often, suspect that I do not belong to this era. Close friends know that I am very fond of singer Ekin Cheng’s 1874. (1874 song) I like it not because of the movie, but because of the lyrics.
“Why couldn’t I make it in time to be born in 1874? Be earlier by exactly 100 years, an era……though unacquainted & unrelated as contemporaries, but at least, could live and die in the same era.”
If I were born in 1874, then what I experienced would relate to one of China’s most turbulent eras. The weakness of late Qing; the invasion of the Great Powers; the signing of the Treaty of 1901; country invaded, internal strifes; Japanese occupation; the 9.18 Mukden Incident; 7.7 Marco Polo Bridge Incident, The Nanking Massacre, the post 1949 Chinese cultural revolution, so on and so forth. All these and more, during China’s most turbulent era in past century, inflicted the people with ineffaceable pain and hatred.
The elders told me it is a blessing not to be born into that era!
True, what I know about that era is either from books or documentary films. I did not experience its turbulence nor endure it. But perhaps of my wont to transport myself through contemplation: the despair, the pain, that moment of hopelessness, that indelible hatred; I felt as if I had been through them!
If I were living in that era, I would step out; step out alongside the national army to protect homes and country, and to defend: our motherland and her honor, the citizens’ properties and wealth, the citizens’ lives, and most of all, the citizens’ dignity. Even though during that era staying alive was no easy task; but to lose my country - I would rather risk my life and shed blood, at least, it was done in the name of nationalism!
Truly, living in this present society, I sometimes feel distress. Distress, really it should be bliss! I live in Hong Kong; a prosperous and vigorous city with hardly any natural calamites, and well-protected by motherland to boot; in my opinion, it is a patch of Heaven’s playground. To be able to live here is indeed a blessing!
But, oftentimes when immersed in happiness, one tends to become overly pampered. therefore, one tends to become more demanding of this and that from life; one tends to be more demanding of this and that from Hong Kong; one tends to become more demanding of this and that from the country. So, what of one’s own demands of oneself?
Mankind’s greatest shortcoming has to be if they make no demands of themselves. People who have no demands of themselves tend to become irresponsible, habitually shifting responsibilities onto others, while conversely becoming overly demanding of others.
If I were like that, I would soon become a zombie; a person of no tomorrows!
Although, this may not be the only approach, it is one of them, which is, to bow one’s head in introspection. Introspection is the best approach because the answers are usually found during the self-reflecting process. Whatever I could do today, I’d first ask myself before I ask others; before I take, I’d ask my contribution first; before I ask tomorrow, I’d ask yesterday first!
Maybe my love for 1874 is because I want to ask 1874!
Steven is very much aware of his own idiosyncrasies, sometimes even taking jabs at them at his own expense as depicted in many of his writings. I've translated too many of his philosophical pieces, here's one that is more of a 'light' anecdote, but still reflecting his personality. Next one coming up is Forget Hate. 忘恨! Heavy stuff! I'm torn between translating the piece on the Love Story of Durian & Mangosteen 榴山戀 (light), and Which is Scarier? 哪個可怕﹖(heavy) Which one sound more interesting to you all?
Smelly Tofu 臭豆腐 Loathe the taste of Smelly Tofu. As to Smelly Tofu’s special brand of ‘fragrant’ scent - even if the hawker’s stall selling them is at one end of the street, the other end of it also reeks with their odor. That pungent odor saturating the air will have me instantly turn on my heels fleeing the scene. In no way am I disparaging Smelly Tofu, it is just a matter of personal taste. Many of my friends who like Smelly Tofu told me that it is actually not smelly at all, on the contrary, it is quite fragrantly crisp to the taste. They tried to sweet-talk me to sample it. I refused to open my mouth. Instead I pinched my nose tight and begged them to please take it away, or else I would die of suffocation. A bit of hyperbolizing here, but my loathing for that particular odor is no joke! Until that one particular get-together of new and old friends sharing a meal, having fun chitchatting happily away.
Then the doorbell rang. Another friend had just arrived. I opened the door, and immediately saw the package of Smelly Tofu in his hand. An ‘aroma’ rushed up at me. And I thought to myself, “Oh God! (Tin, ya!) Never mind that you did not buy a visitation gift, but do you have to bring along that “thing”? At that moment, I was so tempted to lock that friend out. But as a host, such discourtesy would be inappropriate, and so I grudgingly let him in.
The moment he sat down, he immediately shared his goodies with good friends, which upon savoring prompted exclamations of “Delicious!” (hou mei!), “Great!”(zheng ya!). I cautiously sat myself at the very far end, watching them devouring the goodies. Suddenly, a lady friend asked me why I was not eating. I said I did not like fried food. My good friends instantaneously hooted and eagerly divulged that I was actually scared of the “stink” not the “fried”. Upon hearing that, the lady friend snickered and uttered, “Useless” (mo guai yung!) “What?” How did disliking Smelly Tofu become associated with being useless? I was a bit peeved, but could only keep mum.
Later, a group of good brothers (hou hing dai) deliberately taunted me with this speared piece of Smelly Tofu dangling before my face. Since my manly ego was clearly being challenged, I took a piece, promptly popped it into my mouth, and chewed determinedly. Yee? It’s not smelly! Not bad tasting, either! All my friends cheered and taking turns, teased, “There you go, you ate it! What’s there to be scared of?”
True! Actually what I previously thought of as scary, including tasks and things, they were really no big deal. If one is daring enough to try them out, or willing enough to take the first step out, the real situation might indeed turn out quite differently. Although to this day I still dislike eating Smelly Tofu, I do, however, want to thank my friends for opening up my mind.

Strawberry67, The first character that popped into my mind that Steven would love to portray is Lu Xun, 鲁迅, an early 20th century renowned Chinese poet. Steven actually did a short film on Lu Xun's life for some tv program. Next, maybe, Zhuge Liang, Qu Yuan - (屈原) of Dragon Boat Festival, and Li Shi Ming. He loves the historical figures and of course, the patriotic heroes of the late 1800s and early 1900s. Steven is really into poetry. He is a member of a poetry club in Hong Kong.

Steven portrayed Lu Xun, one of the 4 Chinese historical figures in an educational program, that was aired on Hong Kong Educational TV station in 2004. The program was part of 2nd grade school curriculum. The other 3 figures were Li Shi Ming, Xiang Yu,(項羽 - a great general and hero of Chu State) & Commissioner Lin Zexu (林则徐 - Opium War). Steven was invited to portray Lu Xun because of his air of refinement and scholarly look. In the program, he appeared first as a young Japanese overseas student and later as a mature man.
I'm right now communicating with Xiao Hu to see if I can buy a copy of the book, which costs about 87 yuan (bound book) + postage. Yeah, the keepsake book is more costly than Steven's own book because economies of scale does not apply here, and the photos are all in color. The book is about 100 pages thick. For the overseas fans, there is the problem of remitting payment for the book. Hu admits that it might create a bit of inconveniences, but that he will do his best to get the book to me, regardless. It may end up with him sending the originals to me through internet and I will have them bound into a book myself. Are you interested in getting one for yourself?
Forgot to mention earlier, the book is a present to Steven from Steven-ma website. I believe his other fansite, 温馨马仔小屋, (Steven's Warm House) will give him a different present.

Foreword by Chen Jia Ying (陳家瑛) (a paraphrase) It’s strange how I got to know Steven. We both work in showbiz, but for 10 or more years we never met each other before. My impression of him then was vague: only that he was a singer, heard his songs and that he sang quite well. That’s about it, as far as my knowledge of him, then.
Until on one evening in 2004 when my friends and I talked about him. One of them was a good friend of mine of a decade or more, Xu Rong Rong, I was curious as to why she would quit her journalist job for a publishing one.
Ah Xu said,” I love publishing. Ma Chun Wai gave me an opportunity to learn, so I changed my career path.”
Ah Xu’s obvious respect for Ma Zai impressed me.
Last year, an overseas mutual friend introduced me to Ma Zai. I finally got to really know him. This fellow was even more 清秀 (qing xiu – delicate & pretty?) than his TV image. On the polite side, he had on this bashful look on his face. Well, an image of a “good” young man, indeed. (Haha!) That was my first impression of him.
Later, a group of friends invited me for an initiation into a club... what club? Can’t guess, eh?
Apparently, Ma Chun Wai, Xu Rong Rong and other friends have gathered to form a poetry club. They were inviting me to join them in matching poem couplets. Poem couplets match? I had never done that before in my whole life. There I was, caught; here coupling this dui lian, there matching that phrases. At first, I was scared to death. Who were these people? But as time passed, I began to enjoy this kind of interaction; furthermore, I got to know the real Ma Chun Wai.
I discovered Ma Zai’s lovable side, but at the same time, his hateful side, too. Let’s start with his hatefulness first. Don’t be deceived by his refined exterior appearance. He actually possesses quite an impatient disposition. If anxious, his impatient personality will surface. He is very self-deprecating; he has an extremely strong sense of self, and can be quite impetuous – all in all, a very traditional Chaozhou chauvinistic man. And his most annoying trait is that he is very perceptive, in that he can penetrate other people’s innermost thoughts. The people whose innermost thoughts are so penetrated by him, will feel a sense of self-failure. (translator’s note: because they failed to protect their thoughts from him)
But he also has a lovable side to him. He is filial; he is responsible to family; he possesses good work ethics; he is willing to help people (but sometimes can be overly helpful); he is loyal to friends and loved ones; and he understands gratitude.
I also discovered that this fellow’s Chinese Language standard is very high. If I made an error, he actually dared to pointedly expose my mistakes. All these years very few people dared to be this direct to me; I actually appreciate his directness.
Ma Zai is very discerning of things around him. His sense of perceptiveness is very strong. He is a very intelligent person. A strong perceptive insight will only benefit an artist in his entertainment work.
He also has a very fertile imagination, as illustrated in his prose essay, “Landgull” It’s really funny that a person could actually waste a whole hour just staring at a seagull. “Hi, fellow (Xiao Zi) weren't you tired?” I guess normal people will not do that, only a mental person would fantasize over a seagull for so long. He has the talent to write fantasy fictions.
I hope that readers reading his book will also share my feelings about him.

Forget Hate 忘恨 Sometimes, love’s flip side is hate, indeed. 有時, 愛的反面, 真的挺恨的!But not for me! 說的, 不是我! Frankly, in my philosophy, love can be infinite but hate is as to forget. 愛可以很盡, 但恨, 等如忘!
There are friends of mine, who only yesterday were inseparable, pledging vows of undying love but in the instance of falling out or in a fit of intolerance, would cast their past off like ashes into the winds! Even to the extreme of becoming bitter enemies bent on destroying each other.
If cannot be good friends or lovers, does it mean they cannot co-exist peacefully in the same place? Who gains? Who loses? It just cannot be clarified or delineated. But, people, oftentimes, like to shove all the blame onto the other party. Never mind how you feel, at least, I feel better.
Yeah! You feel better. I don’t. Enough!
Not enough! For some people, it is just not enough! Who owes whom? Let’s not get into that just yet. Both parties or maybe just one of them will content with nothing less than the ex’s “death”. Death, be it the literal annihilation of life or the figurative ruining of life. Regardless, hate you is just that, hate you! 反正恨你, 就是恨你!
This kind of mind-set; both males and females alike have them. Moreover, this kind of mind-set has nothing to do with being self-centered or not. I believe it is an inherent trait in human nature; to possess. 佔有!
This desire to possess; it’s very insidious! It can push people towards atrocity, malevolence, cold-bloodedness and even self-debasement. Or perhaps to infect people one hates with this frame of mind and behavior that one has no wish to possess.
I, truly, do not want to be that way!
Once person to person destiny is over, they should split! Split? To what degree? The ultimate split should be to forget! It maybe be difficult to forget everything all at once, but heading that direction cannot be wrong. Even if one says trying to forget is to evade, I also believe between ‘forget’ and ‘hate’, ‘forget’ is preferable to ‘hate’. 我也相信, 忘和恨, 忘比恨好!

Hi! Hu, Just my way of supporting Steven. Strawberry shows hers by buying all his books, cds and watching his series. And you, by hosting his fansite. So fans show support of artistes in different ways. But anyway, without other Steven fans posting of news in the first place, there won’t be any news for me to translate at all. So my most sincere thanks to all Steven webmasters / webmistresses for hosting Steven fansites. Here’s another newly created fansite: stevenstation

Oh strawberry, how I wish you could read Steven’s own writings. His style of writing is truly “very precise and straight to the point”, but powerfully evocative. Whereas he may use only 4 characters to describe a thought, my translation of his words could run a mile long. Just translating chengyu (idioms) drives me up the walls. To me, English is so inadequate a language to translate Chinese, which is so beautiful and so precise in its brevity.
And Steven’s style of writing is just that, succinct and precise. He chooses his words very carefully, simple words but when strung together into sentences evoke images, moods and feelings. Like his Landgull, after reading his fans’ insight, I re-read the essay with a different perspective, and this time around, the essay evokes a different tone, images and feelings. The solitary feel remains, but that contented feel I first felt is now steeped with this sense of forlornness, resignation and indeed, loneliness. His sigh of self-deprecating realization that seagulls should remain seagulls, and not being made into landgulls is very evocative and imbued with hidden meanings. Yeah, it does make one thinks if he is indeed referring to his own past experience.
Btw, both Julian and Tavia are confirmed publicly to film the Director Tsui tv series scheduled for nov. Although Steven is rumored to be in the same series, there is no public confirmation of his participation, yet.
The series plot supposedly centers around horoscope.
