After a while, Joey was promoted by the music company in Hong Kong and she later had plastic surgery. well to be fair, the reason why Joey was "struggling as a singer" was not because her singing skills didn't qualify for the job, it was just other factors. The reason why she got signed to Go East in the first place was partially because Joey won the Big Echo Karaoke Singing Contest (which at the time was really big), so she DID get signed cuz of her talent. in fact, she even recorded the theme song for a movie. But for whatever reason it was Mark Lui that decided not to further promote Joey (according to Paco for some reason Mark had the power to make that decision). This could have been because they were already focusing on Kelly who signed a year earlier (interestingly enough, during her auditions Kelly's singing didn't qualify, but they gave her a chance anyway...btw i'm NOT hinting anything sexual related, i'm just saying dat its interesting in non-sexual way).

later on Joey did get signed by a Japanese record company (the same company as SMAP is in) but then they stopped all their businesses in HK. so for the second time Joey got signed to a company but wasn't able to officially debut. but this just shows how the reason why Joey got rejected had nothing to do with her singing abilities, it was really just bad luck and bad circumstances.

anyway, my main point is Joey didn't just appear from nowhere. While it is a little bit weird how EEG put THAT much effort into promoting her, she definitely didn't appear out of nowhere. What happened was that when Joey first signed to the Japanese record company, Mani (who at that time was managing Grace Yip and a few other singers like Bondy and Joyce) heard that this other company signed a new singer that was a pretty good singer (and this singer was Joey) and that she was a threat/competition to Grace. But then when Mani found out that the company stopped all their business in HK, Mani thought that it would be smart to sign Joey herself. So what was now a threat was now on her side too. Joey being recognized by the general public as the better singer between the three (Joey, Grace, Lillian) was then "promoted"/pushed to be the big sister of the company.

okay it seemed like I wrote this huge post just to say one thing, that Joey didn't appear from nowhere, so i thought i might just add one more point. The thing is, the entertainment industry is so dark and corrupt, that if you were to even care about stuff like this, you must as well not pay attention to HK entertainment at all. honestly, the purpose of these entertainers are to entertain you with their talents and art whether it is their singing, dancing, acting etc. If you are entertained, then they have succeeded. All i know is that Joey has become a pretty amazing entertainer, and that is all that matters.

As much as I would like to not believe it, I think there's a distinct possibility that they might have. It seems almost like an open secret that female artistes sleep with higher ups for promotion. I don't believe I've seen anything set in stone though.
