Huang Xiao Ming and Miriam held hands while singing "Elixir of Love" in a music show. When asked if Huang Xiao Ming was embarrassed when holding Miriam's hand, he replied, "No, both of us are actors.(Is her hand good to hold?) Didn't take note, but I feel honoured to sing with her."
News 23/06/07 - Promoting "Hooked on You" in China Zhengzhou
Miriam and director Law Wing Cheong attended "Hooked on You" press conference in Zhengzhou and spared 20 minutes to accept an exclusive interview with Da He Bao. Miriam initiated to let the director speak in Cantonese while she translate to the reporter. "This way you can interview more within the short time."
33-years-old Miriam is playing a character from 27 to 37 years old in "Hooked on You". "It's easy and also hard. Easy is my age is within that range, I have the feelings. If I didn't enter the showbiz, I would have been a mother now and continued being a nurse. After entering showbiz, my thinking is different. The director wanted me to portray the character with homor and sadness at the same time because it's a single woman striving in Hong Kong. After fully emerged in the role, I found that using my eyes to act is more difficult than using words."
The director also "ordered" Miriam to change her emotions naturally, "20+ years of age needed to be energetic, strong in character, and stiff in expressions. 30+ years of age there will be a big change and the character has more dynamics. Example, there are many ways of crying. The director let me tried a new look, new thinking. It's a breakthrough and I achieved a lot."
Miriam broke off with her boyfriend outside the entertainment circle because relationship "hindered" her work, "I'm a workaholic. In the movie, the love that came late is very similar to myself. It's not that there are so many good men that I don't know how to choose, I'm not that lucky. But everytime the ending (breakup) was chosen by me. Work is in first place. To reject dates because of work is very normal to me. I chosed to be a power woman and not a small woman. After 30 years old, I feel out of love can be a kind of happiness too, it's better than nothing happened. When love matures, she'll get married and give birth, giving up her career is not impossible."
Miriam thinks that producer Johinnie To is a serious and sturn director. "Director To's temper is hot. Director Law is my director for this film. He's not fierce so I'm not scared. But Director Law had to face Johnnie To alone after work, and I don't need! Law Wing Cheong followed Johnnie To since 1990 and they filmed 20 over films together. I cooperated with Director To a few times and I admire the techniques he used in comedies. He's born with the ability to know which actor suits what kind of character." Law Wing Cheong also expressed this is the reason why he had found Miriam, Eason Chan and Richie Ren to shoot comedies.
"Hooked on You" placed it's characters' relationship over the background of Hong Kong Handover 10th Anniversary. Miriam said she could understand how the director designed in such a way, "The film has metaphorical meanings but it's not talking about Handover specifically. A person(Ah Miu) has walked all over Hong Kong for 10 years, what the camera tells audience is so memorable that words are not needed." In the film, Ah Miu and Fish Guy's relationship drifted along with scenes of invension of SARS, contruction of Disney, demolition of Star Ferry... Perfectly combining entertainment value with changing of time. "The result is much better by showing with a couple's love story."
Neighbourhood marketplace is used as the main setting. Miriam said, "It's more or less the same as most marketplaces in Hong Kong, so there's a sense of reality. Modern people has too much stress at work. There are many characters and matters in the film and a marketplace makes it more light-hearted and comedic. The art department is quite powerful. They proped up an abandoned market with stocks and the residents nearby came over to buy stuff and even threw them temper: 'Why don't you sell to me? I have money!'"
China actor Huang Bo was selected to act in the film because the director thought he has a comedic feeling all over him. Another reason is because "2 Become 1"'s boxoffice in China wasn't as good as Hong Kong, so he hope to make a change.
There are more bad quality and copycat products that caused a decline in the Hong Kong film industry. This film in invested HK$16,000,000 by Media Asia and is produced by Johnnie To's Milkyway Image, to ensure the brand's quality and commercial draw. Miriam said sincerely, "Mainland market is getting stronger. Stories are unique and techniques are changing, and they don't only cater to mainstream taste only. Hong Kong and China industry people cooperating is a trend. The market is very big and I also hope to cooperate with China."
Miriam most admire China's director Zhang Yimou and Lu Chuan. "'Riding Alone for Thousand of Miles' and Lu Chuan's documentaries let audience feel the charm of the filmmaker's passion in work. They are role models."
It has been a few years since working with Eason in "Feel 100% 2". Miriam thinks his performance is very good this time "We have different life experiences and lifestyles from the past. He has a wife and daughter now, same as the character in the film. We have more understanding of how to act these kind of roles with rich life experiences in this film. And he's more matured in his acting."
The cheerful Eason never forget to create an energetic atmosphere on set, "He will play the guitar and sing, or stand and play portable game. And he will disturb Director Law and make others laugh." But when Miriam has to get into her role of sadness, "I don't talk so that the emotion will not go away."
Miriam is a likeable person in real life. She bought a property so that she can live with her parents. "it's not really fillial piety, but because I have lesser time at home when I have filmming. Even when I get home I'll be tired and don't wish to talk. Mum complained many times", Miriam said humbly.
She has just received certificate of "Honorary Fellow". Is she very concerned about charity work? Miriam said if the social activities is not related to commercial purpose, she will care about it a lot. But in reality, celebrities care more for their career, "Charity work is just a way how we can repay the society, to spread charity to the furthest in the shortest time."
When the interview ended, Miriam said she had a good chat and told the reporter, "I like Sapphire Prince in the cartoon the most. A princess dressed as a man to rule the country, really resemble me. And in the recent new drama 'Wu Shi Lang', I played a strong character who like to dressed up as a guy from young." Miriam is a female workaholic with a man's heart indeed.
Zaobao Interview of Hong Kong's Miriam Yeung
Hong Kong artiste Miriam Yeung believes in Buddhism and the importance of life. But for the role of a fish seller in "Hooked on You", she had to kill many fishes. Miriam could not bear and asked the director to make the fish faint.
"Hooked on You" is about the changes in a market place between 1997 to 2007. As Miriam is playing the role of a fish seller, she naturally had to kill many fishes in the movie. "Even though we killed many fishes, they were mostly those that are unable for sale, hence it's not that cruel. There was once I had to kill an eel that jumps around. I was so scared. My family believes in Buddhism and don't take lives. So I asked the director to hit the fish for it to faint and I can't have NGs, if not we had to kill another fish."
This is Miriam's 4th time cooperating with Eason Chan. She recalled the first time when they worked together, "We filmed 'Rumble Ages' together when we first entered showbiz and we looked like extras. That was about 8 years ago. This time collaborating again, both of us have changed. He is more matured and detailed in expressing his emotions. Our chemistry was good."
Miriam's character in "Hooked on You" hopes to get married before 30. In real life, the 33-year-old Miriam is not worried about this problem, "We mustn't let numbers determine our thinking in life. In the past, traditional thinking is that getting married and bearing children is a woman's final destination. But it's more important for modern women to be independent nowadays. Love and marriage are for women to enjoy, and not to become their burdens. Even if there's no marriage, there's still different love experiences. There need to be serious consideration before getting married."
Miriam still looks forward to a relationship, "I do get to know some guys, but I'm clear that work is the most important for me now. I just changed a company, there's no time for dating. But this doesn't mean I won't go for dates. If I met a guy who can understand my working hours, there's still a chance."
As for marriage, Miriam said, "I wanted to get married when I was 25. Because that time I had been working in the showbiz for 6 years, I was a little tired and lost, thinking how I could go on. Now I find that I love my job very much. Marriage is not very important. The process of 2 person being happy together is more important."
Recently, Miriam received the title of "Honorary Fellow" by Hong Kong Polytechnic University to acknowledge her certificate in nursing school. "Hong Kong nursing schools didn't have certificate courses in the past." Before entering showbiz, Miriam was a nurse. "I miss the days working in the hospital, there's a lot of memories. The values and judgement skills I've learnt in the nursing school can still be applied in the showbiz." This honour let Miriam thought of studying Chinese medicine, "Some Western medicines have complications. Chinese medicines have less complications. I hope to study if there's a chance."
Miriam is often being asked about her rumours with Sammi Cheng. "Such rumours are written since I entered showbiz. Actually what the media write doesn't matter. I'm just a topic, putting me and Sammi as the opening then rest of the essay will be talking about other things." Both of them are in the same company now. Will there be a chance of collaboration? "Yes, if there's a suitable project. But there won't be a cooperation to create entertainment topics."
