F4 will attend Yu Xie Awards

ZZ’s “Love is Loving You” and F4’s “Can’t Lose You” compete for this year’s Yu Xie Awards International Group Best Original Song Award. ZZ said that it’s best if “Can’t Lose You” is nominated because then all four of them can attend together. He also said optimistically that as long as he consults with the company the four can easy coordinate at that time.

ZZ has just finished with “Mars.” Following is a commercial and movie. ZZ said that he prefers to film dramas because when singing, sometimes when he releases a solo album he goes around publicizing alone so he feels lonely. But he hopes to write songs.

In addition, talking about Sammi holding a concert next month in Hong Kong, ZZ said, “If I have time I will go to observe and learn from some performances by good artists. It will help my singing. Although she’s a female (laughter) but there are differences, can go take a look.”

Then will you be a guest at the concert? “What do I need to perform? She should find Jerry Yan. They filmed a movie together so he would be more suitable. I’ll just watch at the side.”

Cai Zhi Ping : Bao Long, ever hurt me deeply

F4's action have been very quiet, Jerry Yan, Vic Zhou and Ken Chu's topics did not stop. As the big parent, Cai Zhi Ping is also very busy with Mars going on tv screens. She didn't expect her close friend, Cai Yue Xuan, actually started bombing few days ago. She admitted, "It's a little bored but i can take it. In fact, the failure of Meteor Garden 2 one and a half year ago, adding up to Jerry's opinions in the media, for a whole year, i was close up, depression, approaching the psycharist, only able to sleep after eating sleeping pills."

How deeply was she ever hurt by Jerry ? She smiled and said, " It's already over, he's always so rush before he does anything, however that time(when Jerry pointed out the she did not have "ren xin" , emotions like a human), it hurt me alot. After that, he openly apologized, and i accepted it. However, the thing that keeps me thinking is the failure of Meteor Garden 2, the re-fliming kept piling up and it delayed till August, no one could share that burden with me, and the reactions wasn't as predicted when the show was out, i was blaming myself."

The pressure affected her health, she realised her immune system went a little haywire, her whole body was different, after seeking cure from many different doctors, she realised it was depression. When MG2 was broadcasted, i closed myself up, not seeing anyone, i didn't go out of my house, it was terrible." Had she had suicide thoughts at that time, she shook her head, "The intentions of not continuing the life is a everyday intention, however, thinking that i have to feed so many people in the company, i cannot just leave them like that."

Ever being hurt by her loved one, now as Mars is broadcasted, she is again being hurt by another close friend, however, she does not hide in a place anymore, she said, "I'll find out the reason, to release the tie in our hearts , after all, we did had wonderful results together."

Fans against! Not stupid,6K's cheapest

A large group of F4 fans slept and waited for the tickets sold from 6 pm the day before at Central Ladprao. It is a little bit chaotic for being in a queqe. The ticket price has been criticized a lot but the fans insisted that it was the cheapest.

4 popular guys of F4, Jerry, Vic, Ken and Vanness, perform the 1st concert in Thailand for fans who have been looking forward to for 2 years. The "Yamaha Makes Your Life Different,Bangkok Fantasy with F4 Live in Bangkok will be staged 2 times on 29th and 30th at Impact Arena, Muangthongtani.

Before the tickets sold, there was a chaotic of both young and adult fans who slept and waited to buy the tickets. Until 10 p.m, the fans named "Bo" and "Som" are the first fans buying the tickets. She said,

"I have been here since 6 pm yesterday. I can afford the ticket myself, don't do anything badly. My mum didn't complain me because I'm usually not an extravagant. She'll also join the concert. We've been looking forward to the concert for 2 years and I think it'd better than going abroad and spend for air fares and the tickets, totally around 30,000 Baht"

"6,000 baht is reasonable and better than going abroad. Somebody said we were foolish and nuts as we were ready to spend such a large amount of money, higher than Britney Spears concert's tickets. I'd like to say not only teenagers are F4 fans but also adults and children.

Som disagreed lots of media complaining that the price of the tickets,6k, is too expensive. " We've planned to stay here and were in a queue before. We realized that today would be crowded. Previously,I missed a free ticket to participate Jerry's meeting event and was so disappointed though I was in the queqe from 10pm in the day before."

"Whether the price is reasonable? if you ask any fans staying abroad, you'll know that the price is about 10,000 Baht. It's more expensive if we go abroad. We're not that stupid! 6,000 baht is acceptable. We don't wanna miss it !"

F4 "Reunion" Earning 2500 thousand in 2 days

F4, who reunited because of Pepsi, would also be showing the group unity at the end of the month, 29th and 30th August, they would be holding 2 concerts in Thailand. The four pockets with commercial and singing, would earn NT1 million.

Meteor Garden was officially shown in Thailand last year and it caused a F4 fever. Earlier on, the foursome took thousands of money with being the spokesperson for their local YAMAHA motorbike commercial. Many various manufacturers invited them to come to Thailand to sing, however, the four of them could not squeeze in any schedule at all and would only be held on the 30th August this month.

It was actually only a one show "F4 Bangkok Concert". Although the four of them did not have the time to go to Thailand to promote, the manufacturer held a promo event, and they placed lots of huge F4 posters at the scene. In the end, they attracted around 2000 fans to attend. And the 3 million ticket was sold out in one day. The most expensive ticket cost HKD$1500 and it was snatched up in less than an hour. Many fans went foward to the record company to request for another show. In the end, they added another slot on the 29th.

As known, the money that the four of them get for endorsement and singing, was around NT1 million. Each of them would be having thousands inside their pocket. As the 4 of them has work on hand, they would be travelling to Thailand from China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and US. Jerry would be going from Taiwan as he's busy with his solo album promo. Ken and Zaizai would be staying around China and Hong Kong for fliming shows. Vanness would be flying to Thailand from US.

Mars, which was lead acted by Zaizai was broadcasted last Satuday. The ratings were number 1. Zaizai, who was the lead actor, had to go back to Yilan due to some matters and was unable to attend the post party celebration. And Jerry's endorsement in sliver jewerly was make known together with his releasing of album.

F4 in Thailand

F4 no longer popular? The answer is - No! The Thailand Fantasy concert they will attend in August, each will pocket at least $10 million.

August 28 and 30, F4 will proceed to Bangkok, Thailand to perform in front of close to 60 000 audience from Asia. The company was willing to pay a sky high price, reaching 8 digits. According to estimates, each F4 member will rake in 10million

F4's concert tickets are still on sale, with the highest priced ticket fetching around $6000, which was gone in one day. F4 are still hot!

F4's MG was shown in Asia, and last country to broadcast was in Thailand. Two years ago, their first album was released. This year, the sequel was shown. In just over half a year of release, F4 are at the peak. F4 is coming to Bankok for a concert. It was originally scheduled to be one show only but due to the great demand, another show has been added.

Each member will sing 3 songs, with Jerry, ZZ and Vanness all singing songs from their new album. Ken even though has not released his album yet, has been producing his album and has recorded a number of songs. Whether he will let his fans hear it, is still being decided by his music company.

F4 held concerts over a year ago. Due to their lack of experience and their own songs, it was criticised to be "tong he hui". After a year of practice, their stage experience increased, they are confident the Thailand concert should please their fans.

In the past year, F4 have each been doing their own things. The Thailand concert will reunite them and they will arrive in Bangkok from different parts of the world. Jerry will come from Taipei, ZZ HK, Ken China and Vanness from the US.

Approximately, from the ticket sales, advertisements and concert products, NT$100million will be the revenue, taking our expenses, each F4 member will at least pocket at 8 digit figure.

F4 Going to Thai to Fix Peformance

After the Pepsi Concert a while ago, each of F4's member is drowned again into their individual work. But as soon as they got the offer to perform in Thailand, their management arranged for the schedule right away.

One of the factors that they can get together is...of course-none other than the highly budget that the promoters offer. It is reported that each member is paid for about 8 digits, but it all can be busted by the fans' antusiasm which reported to buy out the tickets in less than a day.

This states that, different from other countries, the F4 fever is still running high in Thai. Even though beside their payment, the 4 guys' goal is to aim for something worth higher : to fix their performance.

When holding the same concert a while ago, F4 got the same response as they have now. Only one makes the difference: that time the guys didn't prepare as well, especially when tuning out the songs, at the end they are bombed by critics.

Now a year after, we can expect a strict rehearsal and more time on a higher stage, thus a better performance to be watched.

F4 ends partnership, each member endorsing new product

F4 has always been S&K’s spokespersons in China, HK and Taiwan. Recently the local popular group S.H.E took their spokesperson positions in Taiwan. After reporters did some research, they found out that S.H.E didn’t take F4’s job but that they have other jobs at hand. The four will end their partnership and become new spokespersons for other products under the company individually.

F4 has been the spokespersons for S&K (short for Samuel & Kelvin) for several years. F4 are the main promoters in stores in China, HK, and Taiwan. However, recently the big posters of F4 at the Taiwan’s Xi Men Ting S&K store have been taken down and replaced with S.H.E’s.

According to what’s known, S.H.E will be the new spokespersons for S&K. S&K will also be sponsoring their concert in Taiwan in September. Other stores in S&K will be changing their posters successively. S.H.E’s earnings are of course not as high as F4, but the 3’s earnings still reach up to NT$10,000,000 (HKD$2,500,000).

After F4 endorsed for S&K’s fall apparel, the four will officially end their partnership commercial-wise and become the spokespersons for other products under Baleno separately. First was Vanness Wu who will be the spokesperson for I.P.Zone and ZZ Vic Zhou will be the new spokesperson for Kentas (I thought it was Kentex?) Jerry Yan and Ken Zhu will have arrangements later.

In fact, besides F4, Baleno has many other “big star” spokespersons such as Faye Wong and Andy Lau.

F4 and S&K have cooperated pleasantly. The four often wear the clothes of the product they endorse. This time the main reason why the four will be ending their partnership is because the advertising company hopes to have the four become the spokespersons for under products under their company individually so they can expand into the young people’s market even further.

Boy band fanatics

They go to great lengths to catch their idols, spending big bucks on merchandise and trips

By Debbie Swee

IT'S an expensive obsession.

Over a year and a half, 16-year-old Angie Chua has spent more than $5,000 on 5566 albums and merchandise.

The bulk of this money has gone into the purchase of 600 posters - costing $3,000 in all - of the Taiwanese boy band.

Then there were her three trips to Taiwan. The Henderson Secondary student said: 'The most recent trip was in June this year, when I went to watch them record a variety show and to have dinner with them. The previous two times were spent trying to catch them on the streets and buying magazines featuring them.'

Welcome to the heady world of teenage idol worship. Angie is just one of thousands who go to extremes in the pursuit of their favourite pop singers or movie stars.

These ultimate fans queue for weeks to be first in line for autograph sessions. Some spend more than $1,000 on trips to Taiwan and others hire Maxicabs by the hour to trail the stars when they hit town.

Mainly females in their teens and early 20s, they worship mostly 'pretty boys' from the world of Chinese entertainment such as Energy, 5566 and F4.

F4 fan and National Institute of Education trainee teacher Elaine Lee, 20, said: 'I camped over a week for Vic Chou's autograph session in January this year. I also chased after him and Jerry Yen in a cab when they arrived at Changi airport in June.'

F4 comprises four Taiwanese singer/actors who shot to fame after starring in a teenybopper drama serial, Meteor Garden.

Ms Lee literally lives and breathes F4. She can remember all their lines in the show. She adorns her room and stationery with their pictures. Her T-shirts are all from Samuel and Kevin, a fashion chain endorsed by F4.

She has also collected six huge books containing newspaper and magazine cuttings of them. 'I've dreamt of eating and going out with them, and of them being my boyfriends countless times,' she said, adding that Vic Chou pops up most often in her dreams.

While there are no figures for the number of fan clubs in Singapore, more than 40 clubs are estimated to be active, ranging in size from less than 10 members to more than 350. Membership for the Only F4 fan club hovers around 150 - with 98 per cent of them being female.

Some of these clubs revealed that the older fans tend to be more extravagant and excessive. The younger ones are limited by a lack of both money and freedom.

Ms Stephanie Loh, 32, vice-president of the Only F4 fan club, said: 'It is the older fans, some who hold high positions in the education sector, who will buy air tickets to get into the airport transit area to greet their heroes when they arrive in Singapore.'

Some passionate fans even taunt fans of competing stars.

'Some F4 fans have deliberately chased 5566 when they came to town, just to give them the finger. Somehow, the F4 fans and 5566 fans just cannot get along,' said Ms Adeline Lim, 35, president of Only F4. She said the girls are in their early 20s.

Thankfully, face-to-face clashes have yet to occur.

In Angie's case, her homemaker mother accompanied her and two other sisters, also 5566 fans, on all three trips to Taiwan. 'I don't mind taking them there. So long as they don't turn bad, they're free to do what they want. If they're happy, I'm happy,' said Madam Lau Chiew Har, 45.

However, Angie's father disapproves of their fanaticism. 'It's not as if these pop idols are famous people who have done great things. I always tell them, even if you know them, they don't know you,' said Mr Chua Beng Huat, 51, a machine operator.

Nevertheless, he footed the bill for their trips. 'I just let them be. There's no point nagging them about it. They will grow out of it.'

Similarly, 16-year-old Nicole Cheong finds it a big waste of time and money. 'I think it's going overboard. I'd rather spend that money and time on bonding with my family and friends,' said the CHIJ Katong Convent student.

Dr Brian Yeo, consultant psychiatrist at Mount Elizabeth Medical Centre, said while idol worship is normal, it becomes a problem if it interferes with a teen's school work or daily life.

'While young girls have pop idols, the teenage boys have their soccer stars. The fear is really for the younger kids, as they are more easily influenced,' he explained.

But he added that most teenagers do outgrow this phase.

What really is the attraction of these pop idols?

'They're very handsome, and not proud. They set a role model for me when I see how hard they work to achieve what they have now,' gushed Elaine.

Fan favourites finally coming to Bangkok

By Suwitcha Chaiyong and Daniya Ponganutree, Photographs courtesy of BEC-TERO Entertainment

Did You Know: Vanness likes to throw things like clothes, accessories or even his microphone into the audience during F4 concerts.

The word supergroup was created to describe acts like F4. The Taiwanese boy band — Jerry, 27, Vic, 25, Ken, 25, and Vanness, 26, (real names: Yan Cheng Xu, Zhou Yu Ming, Zhu Xiao Tian and Wu Jian Hao) — count a legion of screaming fans all across Asia who were drawn in over the years by the group’s music, movies, TV series, modelling and commercials.

Among their most fervent fans are the crowds of Thai teenyboppers who will be flocking to F4’s first-ever Bangkok concerts on August 29 and 30 at Impact Arena.

MEDIA DARLINGS
Unless you’ve been in a coma the past few years, it will have been hard to miss the fact that F4 have been the talk of teens across Asia. And while many teenage girls know more about what Vic and Vanness eat for breakfast than the guys’ own mothers, we’d better fill in those who may have forgotten.

The guys got their start in 2000’s massively popular Taiwanese TV series Meteor Garden, where the four guys played a group of friends known as F4. F4 stands for Flower 4 and is supposed to symbolise the fact that the guys’ friendship would blossom forever. That series was based on the Japanese comic Hana Yori Dango.

The show was so popular that the producer decided to take Jerry, Vic, Ken and Vanness and turn them into a boy band. Their debut album was titled Liu Xing Yu and was a roaring success in Taiwan. Later the title song would become popular across the continent.

After a concert tour around Asia (but not Thailand), F4 released their second album, Fantasy 4ever, in 2001. In 2002, it was back to the small screen for Meteor Garden 2 in 2002. To say the show was popular is like saying klong water is dirty.

Anyway, F4 are now big business. In 2002, the group raked in more than $40 million for their activities, and they have gone on to pitch Pepsi across Asia.

And now, after taking some time of to do their own things, the guys from F4 are ready to reunite for their Bangkok Fantasy with F4 concert. Here’s what celebrities and fans are saying about F4’s big Thai trip.

Naowarat Yuthanun, celebrity and diehard F4 fan

I’m so excited. I thought they would never come to Thailand. I’m also an actress and have never been crazy about any band as much as this before. I want my sons to be as nice as F4. Fans shouldn’t miss this concert. This could be the last concert where we see the four members together.

Tharathong Suksomlerd (Young), singer who sang the Thai version of “Liu Xing Yu”

I am glad that they are finally coming to Thailand. Among the four members, I like Ken most because he is a musician like me. If I could ask them anything, I would like to ask them to sing their songs in Thai, so I could sing along easily.

Kaneeart Dandamrongsuk (Art), member of Vacation, the band opening for F4 in Bangkok

F4 frenzy

......continuation

It is such a great honour for me to be opening for a big band like F4. From the pictures I’ve seen, I think they all look more handsome than before. If I meet them, I would like to ask them to pick an audience member to sing with them on stage.

Patcha Wongbaisaj, 22, recent graduate

F4 are my favourite band because they offers great variety of music. My favourite member is Vanness because of his cheerful personality. I also study Chinese, so I can understand their songs. If I could talk to them, I would tell them that I will always be their fan. By the way, I suggest that they all go on a diet.

Sarpsiree Srithai, 16, student at Sueksanaree School

I know F4 from their TV series Meteor Garden. They are nice and gorgeous. I just like everything about F4. However, Ken is my favourite because he is independent. I will definitely go to F4’s concert, even though I can’t understand the songs. If I have a chance, I will tell them that I love them and will always be their fan.

Sarayut Tachaiwog, 16, student at Donmueng Jaturajinda School

I know F4 from the series, Meteor Garden, but I prefer their singing to acting. I like F4 because my friends like them as well. Vic is my favourite because he is the cutest. If I could, I would let them know that I have admired them for a long time.

Fans mad because F4 not complete
Posted: August 23, 2004

In April Pepsi spend a lot of money to invite F4 to film a commercial. Summer vacation is almost over but there are still many cans with Jerry Yan and Vic Zhou that can't really sell. As for Vanness Wu and Ken Zhu's cans, Taiwan didn't even sell them!

Starting from April Pepsi got their 9 stars to film a commercial but F4's Pepsi cans were a great disappointment to Taiwan fans because this year's Taiwan Pepsi cans can only sell Jerry Yan's and Vic Zhou's. Vanness Wu and Ken Zhu's are no where to be seen.

Currently there has been fans that took the initiative and contacted Taiwan's Pepsi's manager to ask when they can buy Vanness and Ken's pepsi cans. The answer they got made fans very disappointed.

Taiwan's Pepsi's manager expressed that portrait Pepsi cans will stop selling before October. Until now, there are still Jerry and Vic cans. Taiwan Pepsi has to clear out their warehouse so for this reason they decided not to manufacture any other portrait cans. The commercial obviously had F4 in it, but cans only have F2. Taiwan's Pepsi's manager said that it's mainly because Pepsi is against surveys in Taiwan using popular spokespersons as the priority choice, involving celebrity's original Taiwan portrait contract. Therefore Taiwan Pepsi can't produce all the stars' cans.

In fact, Taiwan's Pepsi cans are manufactured in Taiwan and then sent to Pepsi's head company factory. If they really wanted to print, the amount of orders are in 10 thousand units. Pepsi estimated that it'll be hard to sell more than 10,000 of Vanness and Ken's cans so they simply didn't manufacture any.

Regarding Taiwan's Pepsi's reply, fans' reactions varied. Some fans question how professional Pepsi's market estimation is and protested on Pepsi's official site wanting Pepsi to re-evaluate F2's portrait cans. They hope that Pepsi can ask for different fans' opinions.

There were also fans that angrily expressed Pepsi isn't respecting F4 fans. Besides the first year when they had F4 on one can, then the second they sold F4 separately. Moreover, Taiwan didn't import. Fans that wanted to collect must ask their overseas friends to buy four cans at once. Even though Pepsi's portrait cans were visible in the Taiwan market this year, but this time not only did they sell them separately, there's only F2. F4 fans that want to collect have to search in different countries, making many fans very disappointed.

Many F4 fans that collect F4 related items can only get Vanness' cans through HK fans. But this year in HK there were no Ken cans making HK and Taiwan fans not know what to do. Pepsi expressed that it's hard to re-evaluate but they promise to do their best to import the cans for fans.

To fans, what's worth being happy about is the event in October will have Pepsi vans for the first time in Taiwan so Taiwan fans don't have to get these merchandised through HK fans.

The Way The Music Died

Many dismiss Canto-pop as fluff, and its Taiwanese cousin, Mando-pop, is feeling the same heat. But the problem of record sales runs deeper than piracy, MP3 and economic woes, industry watchers tell Shu Shin Luh

Cigarette smoke and crusty tea cups fill the recording studio. Eason Chan Yik-Shun, dressed in a simple black tee and khaki carpenter pants, strums an air guitar Bruce Springsteen-style and taps his foot to the beat of the latest of the recorded songs while his producer, Jim Lee sings along, marking appropriate places for mixing in the harmonies. It is almost one in the morning, and the singer-producer team is hurrying to wrap up the recording for Chan's Putonghua album, due out next month. He still has a full filming schedule for his music video the next day.

Chan is a rare commodity, a song-writer cum singer, in a Mando-pop music industry that churns out pretty faces and cookie cutter teenage idols like an assembly-line garment factory. Within months of boy band F4's success, record labels rapidly replicated the proven formula with a slate of new boy bands, 5566, Energy, Comic Boyz among others. Record producers and lyrists dub this idol-making machine as the "F4 phenomenon," but in reality, the formula extends beyond just boy bands.

Jay Chou Jie-lun, for example, coined the "king of Mando-R&B,"has set off a new generation of wannabe R&B artists. And S.H.E., a three-member girl band formed last year, is spawning similar groups s uch as Sweety, a duo of two 14-year-olds.

Within the music industry, producers, record company executives and musicians all try to explain Mando-pop's shift toward an era of mass-produced teeny-bopper stars. Some fault rampant piracy and MP3 CD-burning for producing a generation of cookie-cutter Mando-pop stars; others accuse record labels as greedy money monger who mass-produce the same kinds of pop stars and shun untested music styles.

The reason lies somewhere in between, says Lee, a 20-year music industry veteran and producer for pop stars such as Sandy Lam Yick-lin and Kelly Chan Wai-lam. "The music industry is a business, and I understand record labels are in it to make money," Lee said. "But we need to remind ourselves what kind of industry we're in. We're in it to make good music ... not to be greedy."

Piracy and MP3 technology have undoubtedly eaten into the recording industry's profits. Just five years ago, an A-Mei or Jackie Cheung Hok-yau album could easily break the 500,000 sales mark. Now, even these super stars are relegated to accepting 100,000 or 200,000 copies as successes. As profits shrink, so have record production budgets, which by most music producers?estimates, have been slashed at least 50%.

"A few years ago, if you sell 200,000 copies, your boss would call you into the office and lecture you for failing," said TC Liu, senior director of Sony Music Taiwan's domestic division. "Now you sell 200,000 copies, your boss throws you a party for a job well done." (The only album in Taiwan to break that 200,000 mark last year was Jay Chou's Eight Dimension.)

But producers and talent scouts such as Eddie Chang, who trains new artists for Avex Taiwan Inc., say piracy and MP3s have become easy scapegoats for all of the recording industry's woes. The more pressing wrinkle egging record companies toward the time-proven cookie cutter idol syndrome is technology. Even as record companies?revenues fall to a quarter of their income levels five years ago, consumers are becoming more demanding. Cable television, the Internet and the video-gaming industry are inundating the young record-buying consumers with an abundance of entertainment alternatives, degrading the importance music plays in their lives.

"As kids, we were content spending a Saturday afternoon listening to a good vinyl by Lou Dayou; we thought life couldn't get better than that," recalled Simon Ho, general manager for MTV Taiwan. "Now, music is no longer a necessity. The youth today have so many options; they change their tastes and preferences constantly."

He adds: "As a pop star, you are easily replaceable; the recording industry has to keep up with this new reality." In what music producers call the "fast-food culture," these added worries are pushing fiscally-conservative record labels to be even more cautious in their choice of stars they are willing to shape, favoring those who fit a tested mold.

F4 represents the clearest evidence of this trend. F4 offered its teenage fans "more than just an album with a bunch of songs on it," says Tiffany Wu, a 21-year veteran of music marketing who finds new artists for Linfair Records Ltd. F4 provided "a whole package of TV dramas, variety shows, and online video games. Looks matter more now. Consumers want a fantasy, an idealistic image of the artist."

F4 fan clubs of screaming teenagers quickly popped up all over Asia and in overseas Chinese communities; some devout F4 fans -- mostly teenage girls between 15 and 20 -- spend on average HK$10,000 a month on F4 paraphernalia. The group's overnight success -- including winning MTV Asia's Inspiration Award -- encouraged other record labels, to adapt that formula to their own versions of F4. The five-member boy band, 5566, for example, has its own cable television drama, MVP Lover.

Music producers, composers and lyrics lament this shift in Mando-pop toward formulaic replications of teen idols. "I don't dislike F4 the band," says producer Jim Lee. "But the sad part is that F4 has become sort of the mainstream. It sends a message to music people that if you want to make it big, you got to fit this formula, be it a boy band or a solo artist."

Influential new artists (defined as those who sell 50,000 album copies) who used to be able to sustain the momentum of their success for five years now might easily fade into oblivion after a year or two. Wu, for example, signs a dozen potential new artists every year; only half of them even produce an album, and even fewer make the 50,000 sales mark that measures their success.

Even well-established singers such as Wang Lee-Hom and Karen Mok Man-wai who have a few hit albums under their belts are relying on other mediums such as commercials, television dramas and movies to protect their salaries.

Such an environment will only get tougher for new talent to survive, , record company executives and music producers say. Few believe piracy or MP3s will go away. Dwindling record sales will continue to mean shrinking profits and more pressure from record labels companies to churn out albums blindly to compensate for lost sales, creating a seemingly endless vicious cycle.

"Piracy has been around even before CDs were, and the record industry has been crying foul for years. But if you can be flexible and cope with these technological changes, it will continue to haunt you," Lee says. "We just have to answer to our own conscience and keep making good music."

Tickets To Hear The Billionaire Boys From Taiwan Have All But Been Snapped Up

After keeping their Thai fans waiting for two years, boy band F4 from Taiwan will perform two full-scale concerts this Sunday and Monday at Impact Arena Muang Thong Thani.

The long wait for a concert by the hottest boy band in Asia has sent Thai teenagers into a frenzy. Tickets, rather expensive at Bt1,000 to Bt6,000, have sold like hot cakes.

"It is a dream come true", said a member of an F4 fan club, smiling happily. "It is absolutely fantastic."

F4 has several fan clubs here: Fan Cool Gang, f4thailand.com, Ken-Chu International Fan Club, www.jerrybunnyclub. com and ww.zaizhouclub.net. Several Thai fans are expected to fly in from abroad for the shows.

The four Taiwanese lads - Yan Cheng Xu, better-known as Jerry; Zhou Yu Ming, aka Zaizai or Vic, Zhu Xiao Tian, aka Ken; and Wu Jian Hao, aka Vanness - have enjoyed tremendous success since their debut a decade ago.

Their maiden album "Meteor Rain" did well in many Asian countries and their appearance in a TV series called "Meteor Garden I" topped the ratings throughout Southeast Asia. Titled 揜ak Sai Sai Huajai 4 Duang?in Thai, it was aired on Channel 3.

Fans of F4 went wild again when their second album, "Fantasy 4ever" hit music stores in 2002. It featured the hit soundtracks "Jue Bu Neng Shi Qu Ni" and "Yan Huo Ji Jie" recorded for their second TV series, "Meteor Garden II" released the same year.

Last year, F4 won the Inspiration Award at the MTV Asia Awards in Singapore.

The group is now reported to have earned over US$40 million

(Bt1.6 billion). Bringing them here reportedly cost Bt100 million.

The shows are organised by BEC Tero Entertainment Company and Thai Yamaha Motor Co. "The expenses for the concert came to Bt50 million," says a public relations officer from BEC Tero Entertainment. Perhaps that explains why the ticket prices are so steep.

Fans from all ages joined the concert.

Four members of F4 have come to Thailand with a warm welcome even there was a little difficulties as the fans was not only waited at the airport but also chased them with such a high speed drive. Lots of fans stayed at the hotel but because of almost 50 security guards, no one could be close to F4.

At the front and inside of the hotel, lots of fans waited for F4 made the excited atmosphere at Silom.

For the 1st round of the concert, it was so crowded. Many fans, all ages, went there with their own collections, some gifts and souvenirs to give F4.

Somebody came to the concert alone. Some fans gathered in groups or came to the concert with their family. Look at this family, mummy arranged the project, papa had to carry big boards so their 2 children could enjoy the concert convieniently. (555 don't have to carry a heavy board )

After the concert ended yesterday, there was a meet and greet event. It was one of the yamaha campaign which some fans could be close to F4.

F4 expressed that they were so glad that they could come to meet Thai fans and they were come here quite late as their tight schedules so the plan was hardly arranged.

Zaizai said that even he hurt his right hand,no problem at all to entertain Thai fans and expected that his hand would be recovered in 2 months.

Ken ,who could say Thai (a little) ,said that he mostly spoke Thai while going shopping and he had a great time everytime coming to Thailand so he felt that he would like to permanently stay in Thailand.

Jerry, not talkative last night, said shortly that whether he had time, he would like to go to Samui Island as Zz told him about beautiful beaches so he thought he must be there.

Finally, Vanness said if he could change his soul to someone else, he would like to be Zz as his mainly habits were sleeping and eating. He felt that was a happiness and jealous Zz.

It is hardly for them to gather for their next work in the near future. Vanness now is working for his 2nd album while an acted man,Jerry, is now released his album in Taiwan. F2 have their plans to promote the albums in Thailand.

Zaizai who has just finished filming his master drama said his drama might be broadcasted in Thailand soon as he had heard that a company had bought the right. Ken also has a new work soon.

"Meet & Greet with F4"

Quoted from Moo-too (tinyrabbit) - f4forever.pantipmember.com

1.When asked what each of them will say to his fans before going to sleep ..

Jerry - See you
Ken - Good night & sweet dream
Zaizai - Good night
Vanness - (can't catch up with the first part) ...I love you .... (So Vanness!!)

2. When asked if each could switch among the foursome of them, they want to be ...

Vanness - Zaizai. Could sleep all day. Don't bother with too much thinking.
Jerry - Zaizai too. Could have a good sleep. Better yet nothing to worry about.
Ken - Zaizai again (Oh, gals..) On the second thought, Jerry and Vanness chose that already and now Zaizai's hand is injured. Don't wanna be him anymore ...hehe...

3. When asked whom each will pick to ride with them ..

Ken - Anyone who sees me riding and the back seat is still unoccupied. Hop in.
Zaizai - The gal (he co-starred) in CM is beautiful enough. Don't know who else to choose.
Jerry - Want to ride big-size motorcycle. That he could tag everyone along with him.
Vanness - Any Thai gals needs a rider, just let me know .... I'm at your service

CM - Jerry, why it took you so long to get here?
Jerry - I'm just waiting for them. (pointing to F3) They all have long listed queues.

(Err ... isn't it supposed to be you, Jerry? )

CM - Vanness, you change you hair style quite often. Does this also happens when it comes to your g.f.?
Vanness - Nah, not at all.

CM - Ken, you've cousins here in Thailand. You even once lived here. Say something in Thai, will you?
Ken - Well, by now I could only speak simple sentence, like those you said when shopping.

CM - Let's say, "I love you?"
Ken - I love you .... "Can I?" <== he added this on his own. So cute ..hehe...

ZZ Performed Injured, F4 Break Thailand Record:

First time concertin Thailand, F4 rake in over HK$20 million, breaking Thailand concert records. Jerry, who is busy with his album promotion, took time to fly over and ZZ, who injured his hand, performs with injury.

Ever since MG broadcast in Thailand, it has started an F4 craze. With hundreds of F4 clubs being established, many people begin learning Mandarin to sing F4's songs. At the promotional press conference, F4 were not there, but the posters were, that alone attracted thousands of fans in support.

F4 last night held their Bangkok Fantasy With F4 concert, and rakes in over HK$20million for the 2 performances. Tickets cost over thousands of dollars but still sold out.

Different to the previous concerts, F4 presented themselves with a new image to the Thailand fans - Prince Charming image melted the fans' hearts. When the forusome same MG's theme song - QFDY and their famous Meteor Rain, the audience joined in.

At home in Taiwan, ZZ hurt his hand when lifting heavy boxes and his right had was in a cast. However, on stage, his hand was covered with a black handkerchief to hide it. ZZ used his left hand throughout the concert, many fans were very worried, pointing to his right hand. ZZ explains: "Hurt it when clearning up." Then he thanks everyone for their support: "Thankyou to all those that support us and came to see our concert, so F4 can unite again!"

Even though ZZ was injured, he was still the joke target of F3. With no skills in language, ZZ was pestered by Vanness to say hi to everyone, he could only manage: "Hello! hello!", causing laughter all around. Jerry, who is busy with his Di Yi Ci album, is sick and held his first autograph session in Taipei and flew to Thailand to meet up with F3. After singing the songs, he will immediately fly back to Taiwan to continue his promotion.

F4 holds Concert in Thailand Vanness's Dance Sparkled Chaos

F4 held 2 "Bangkok Fantasy with F4" and it ended smoothly 2 days before. There was a huge rain before the concert started, however, it did not spoil the fans' mood for supporting their idol. Near to a thousand fans had arrived early to attend the F4 carnival held outside the arena to purchase F4's concert merchandise.

As F4 went popular in Thailand after Meteor Garden, the four of them sang Qing Fei De Yi and the huge screens upstage showed slides in Meteor Garden. When scenes of DaoMingSi was shown, the whole place was in high mood, screaming "I Love Jerry!"

In between, the host asked and laughed who would want's Ken's number ? In the end, the whole stadium of fans shouted, "Give Me!" Ken did not stop giving flying kisses to fans, and fans return him with cat stuff toys. When Vanness came out with performing a hot dance, fans were all so excited and many stood on their seats. Securities who were at the scene went up to stop them, it was chaos all over, Vanness, who was upstage quickly told fans to sit down

When Jerry was interviewed, he claims he's a very naive person. And it was Ken who was knows thing best and would automatically be concern about people around him. In other words, he was like a kid, and he is most afraid of seeing girls drop tears, many a times, he doesn't know what to do. When seeing fans' support to him, he'll be so touched that he'll drop tears. -- (awwwww...)

F4 has good gains, they even bring wounds to perform to earn hundred million

F4 is outstanding. Two nights of concerts can let them earn a hundred million bhat (8160 ten thousand NT), their hard works paid off. On 29th and 30th sept, for consectively two nights, F4 were at Bangkok's IMPACTARENA STADIUM to perforom [Bangkok Fantasy with F4] concert. Not only F4 has high rewards, even the concert tickets were also high. Per concert ticket cost 6000bhat (4900NT). The tickets were selling fast.

At the beginning of the concert, 4 of them appeared as prince charming which lead the fans to go crazy. When at the solo, Jerry and Ken decided to sing their latest album's songs to let the fans feel fresh and get infatuated with. The interesting thing is that the fans came from Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia etc. The countries are known as ten countries allied armies and therefore the 4 of them have to use different languages to send their regards to their fans.

Because recently zaizai has move heavy things around his house, and his right hand had accidentally been crushed by boxes, so at the concert, his right hand was in cast. Therefore, in the whole entire concert, he uses his left hand to hold the microphone. This leads fans to dropped down their tears as they could not endure it. Facing the fans' heartaches, zaizai was touched. So he comforts everybody by saying, ' This happen a few days ago, while I was moving things around my house. As the things were too heavy, it pressed my hand. Still ok lah. It is only some small bone fractured. It will be fine after about 2 months, so everybody need not have to worry.'

As zai was hurt when he was on stage, he became F3's joking opponet. Always not having the talking talent, zaizai was being asked by vanness to say hi to the fans in thai. He learned from the handphone commercial, and started joking by keep saying 'Hello! hello!' This leads fans that were present then to laugh non stop. Ken discolsed that he had stayed in thailand for more than half a yr. Therefore his thai was better than the other 3 and he kept praising that thailand is a very beautiful place.

When Ken returned taiwan yesterday, he had high fever non-stop. After being diagnosed by the doctor, the doctor claims that he was ill because of over-worked. Therefore after he had dripped in the hospital, he headed back home to rest. Initially, last night he had to do recording of 'kang1 xi1 lai2 le4' but due to his illness, it was temporarily cancelled.

HAPPY WITH THE MEMORIES

That oh-so-sweet night that the fans from Thailand, not to mention other countries in the Asian region, had been waiting for is already over. Members of F4 fan clubs queued up in the registered areas of Impact Arena on Sunday night to drop off the souvenirs they had bought for their Taiwanese idols, before disappearing into the audience to be entertained by two opening acts. And despite just one hour and 20 minutes of seeing the now defunct F4 regrouped on stage, the busloads of female fans went home happy.

It was more like walking into a sporting event than a concert, as the groups from each fan club had chosen to come in the same colour outfits. Many had prepared posters plus large signs to hold up for the four lads from Taiwan.

The girls applauded local artist Art of Vacation, who performed five songs before handing over the stage to Taiwanese boyband " Comic Boyz". Again, the applause was polite but the admosphere was tense. The fans were not there to be entertained by Art or Comic Boyz. They were there for F4.

The united screams was as loud and as drawn out as a roll of thunder when the four darlings, Jerry, Vic, Ken and Vanness, showed up on stage looking natty in white suits. In an instant, every female was on her feet singing along to Ask For More.

Vanness was the first to show off his singing and dancing talents. He also said that he would be coming back to Thailand with his own album.

Ken grabbed a guitar and sang Here We Are and one Taiwanese song. He also overwhelmed his fan club by speaking in Thai, reminding his fans that he lived in the kingdom when he was a lad of 10, and causing another outburst of screaming when he added: "I want to live in Thailand in the future".

Poor, sweet Vic, looking dreamy in a pink shirt and white pants, explained to fans that his right wrist was in splint due to a small accident that involved lifting. The youngest member performed two songs, " Wo Hu Xi Ni" ( I feel You ) and "Ai Zai Ai Ni" ( Love Loves You).

However the who got the loudest screams was Jerry, leading actor from the TV Series, " Meteor Garden". The four boys joined up for a finale, singing two songs from the hit series. Then it was back to the buses, ready for a long trek home and a night of dreaming of F4.

F4’s Thailand Concert

F4 once again reunited to hold a concert in Thailand. The charm attracted many fans from various countries to the concert. F4 first appeared as prince charmings and then gave fans great performances respectively. The four haven’t seen each other in awhile and played around on stage vigorously. Furthermore, making everyone relive F4’s most beautiful memory.

F4: “Hello everyone, we are F4.” ZZ: “In Thailand, first the local temperatures are very hot, second fans are very enthusiastic and also our performances were very good.” Vanness: “I was also touched because his (talking about Jerry) singing improved so I was touched.” Jerry: “I was also touched because his (talking about Vanness) dancing was really too rotten.”

And this time ZZ came with a hand injury. He joked that he wanted to film “Star Runner.” ZZ: “Star Runner because can zhang…”

Jerry Zaizai Friendship stays Unchanged

As to sayings "Shu Da Zhao Feng" (being popular invites rumours), Jerry who has released his solo album for the first time, and the media kept comparing him with Jay Chou. At the same time, another good friend, Vic Zhou (Zaizai) was being pulled down the drain as well. Fans who named themselves as Jerry and Zaizai fans, started giving critism at opposite party's website, causing a war between fans, purposely spoiling F2's relationship.

Jerry's popularity was number 1 recently, and his sales won Jay Chou who released his album at the same time too. However, rumours are easily invited when you are popular, earlier on, both Jerry and Jay's managers were saying that their friendship was number 1 and need not worry about the chart's results and it would not destroy their friendship. However, recently, someone put the limelight onto Jerry's other good friend, Zaizai.

Accordingly, Jerry and Zaizai's fansite, continously recieved words of critism from both sites from someone who name herself as Jerry and Zaizai fans, causing fans from both sides to start the war. Yesterday, a magazine place both of them to compare with their events, as if to spoil their friendship.

As to people trying to spoil F2's friendship, management company first talked about the fake report from the magazine and there was no need to reply on it. However, they hope that fans of both sides not be affected by some "ignorant" fans. F4 have always been on good terms and they're fans have been supporting each other always.

In fact, Jerry and Zaizai are on very good terms. At the press conference of Jerry's album "Di Yi Chi", Zaizai, who was on holiday, specially rush back from Yilan to attend it. And Jerry kept praising Zaizai's new show, Mars during his promo events. And both of them would encourage each other in front and off screens.

Other than that, Mars which is lead acted by Zaizai and Da S, after releasing the pictorial book, the Mars OST is released yesterday. They would also be releasing the first part of VCD, theme song LING is sung by He Sou Liang and He You Lun while Zaizai and Da S sang the duet Let Me Love You.

MORE F4

Taiwanese Boyband F4 is very much in the limelight. But the 4 stars of Meteor Garden are also shining as
individual artists.
Vic Zhou is apparing in a new television drama series titled "War God" opposite Barbie Xu. jerry Yan is
promoting his new solo album. Ken Zhu is doing location shooting for City in the Sky. Vanness Wu is producing his own
album in the United States.
Vic Zhou popularly known as Zaizai plays 2 brothers in the Chinese Television System's War God. The drama explores the
problem of split personalites. After completing the filming of the series with Barbie Xu, he developed a keen interest in the study of
human nature. When not working, Zhou stays home most of the time. His agent, who calls him regularly always finds him going online and
playing video games. Only recently, he did a commercial for a milk product. His fee reportedly had 8 digits in New Taiwan Dollar.

Paradise on Earth
Ken Zhu for his part is spending days in a "paradise on earth" in a remote part of China. The landscapes is fantastic, but the weather is unstable,
Zhu has had to put up with both sudden heavy downpours & blistering days. Outdoor filming has meant grabbing a meal and relieving self wherever he found himself,.
Friends who wanted to visit him were discouraged by the prospect of having to travel one whole day to get to the shooting site.
Zhu plays a geaographic magazine photographer in the drama. Off cam, he has developed real interest in photography. His fascination with the many cultural minorities in China drove him to do some homework
beforehand.
Jerry Yan however has been keeping a high profile to drum up attention over a labor of love, a solo Chinese album. The music is largely slow rock in style. He chose 10
songs after going over 1,000 pieces, most of the emotion-filled ditties.
Yan worked on the album for 3 yrs. "people have been so supportive of what I do, i work hard to show that im not shallow"
Yan, mobbed by hordes of fans wherever he goes says "fame has meant that the public place where I can go freely have become less and less. During my travels, I stay in my room
most of the time. I read novels & get deeply engrossed, ending up feeling in love just like the characters. I also watch DVD while away my time" he recently went to Green Island to shoot a commercial
for a jewelry label. He grabbed the rare opportunity to take a dip in the sea w/o the fans popping up to mob him.

F4 fans in Taiwan have lately found the images of Jerry & Vic on Pepsi bottles being retailed. According to Pepsi exec in Taiwan, 2 stars enjoy a much bigger following than the other 2 ken and vanness.
however, Wu appears in Pepsi bottles retailed in HK. Zhu's image has yet to be launched on Pepsi bottle.
Vanness wu meanwhile is choreographing his own routine for his new album which is introducing in the United States. His showmanship as a performer recently earned him an invitation to
participate in MTV Korea. Little did he realize the extent of his popularity in Korea.
A fan on the flight he took passed a note asking him to guess how many fans would welcome him the Korea Airport, he replied that he didnt expect to find a single fan. To his great surprise, more than 300 fans
greeted him. He was overwhelmed by their warmth

Guo Pin Chao, Yan Cheng Xu, Zhang Shan Wei; Street Corner Interview About Who Should Not Be Releasing An Album; Three "Shuai Ge"s Qualifies

Which celebrity is the one who really should not release an album? The other day, Dong Feng << Yu Le Liu Tiao Tong >> conducted a street corner interview. Guo Pin Chao (Dylan), Yan Cheng Xu (Jerry), and Zhang Shan Wei (A-Wei) qualified. However, a visitor at the scene interceded and expressed, "They are already singing with a lot of sincerity."

When the program << Yu Le Liu Tiao Tong >> researched the subject, "Depending On Popularity To Release An Album? Singing Abilities Don't Matter", they asked passerbys on the streets to name who shouldn't be releasing an album. Who would've thought that "shuai ge" Guo Pin Chao (Dylan), Yan Cheng Xu (Jerry), as well as Zhang Shan Wei (A-Wei), were named. However, the people at the scene were quite interesting, believing that "Yan Cheng Xu (Jerry), Zhang Shan Wei (A-Wei) are already very earnestly expressing their sincerity." The team's Wang Fu expressed, "No one is not suited to release albums and there are no voices that are unpleasant, it's only whether it fits or not."

And before Huo Jian Hua (Wallace) was once accused of having a replacement for theme song, "Qian Jin Bai Fen Bai" for << Somebody >>. However, the record producer, Ding Xiao Wen, 5566's manager Sai Men, and other guests, all expressed, "Impossible." Sai Men stated that he has never heard of such a thing as a singer using a substitute, because it definitely will get out. Furthermore, nowadays, recording technology is very good and the producer just has to work a bit more. However, Ding Xiao Wen mentioned that the production of an album of a "very professional singer" but expressed, 'it was simply a kind of spiritual torture!'"

In addition, others like F4, Lin Yi Chen (Ariel), Huang Zhi Wei (Jerry), Zhang Shan Wei (A-Wei), Guo Pin Chao (Dylan), etc. but their singing is not superior. Sai Men thinks that it's ok, as long as you find the right place. When you're famous, of course you can release an album. Ding Xiao Wen thinks that the singers who release albums these days can be placed in two categories: the very professional singers are called "yi ren" (artist) but not all actors are classified as those who cannot release albums. Xie Li Jin praised Zhang Shao Han (Angela): "Her voice is very good!"
