Fans Craze on Boybands, Not Only Girls!
As "boy groups" once more explode on the pop music scene, we have
discovered that not an "all-female" fans go crazy on male bands but
also bandwagons, hold a second --- audience now ready to reveal their
inner closets"

Wherever there are boybands there are gay boy fans! That is the way
it is always been!.
"I about almost died when I heard that F4 were coming to Singapore"
recalls michel, guy, now 25. "But because I didn't want to make it
look obvious to others that I had a crush on this guy group, I would
go to the grocery store, do some shopping and conveniently throw in
any teen magazine containing F4 on it at the bottom of my shopping
cart under the food that I bought so I wouldn't attract attention."

"I am a Ken-aholic!" raves Wes, a 20-year-old from Mainland. But
while Michel buried his enthusiasm beneath the produce, Wes buys F4
Magazines to have little posters" to hang on his walls. "At first my
friends were like, `He went from gay to supergay,' " he adds, "but
that did not last long. Soon enough they found the same appeal to
this group that I did."

Even high school students have let their fandom out of the closet. "I
would scream and shout and act all crazy if I got tickets to a Comic
Boyz show," writes 16-year-old "Tai," who couldn't get his parents'
permission to be out for this story. "I think liking boy groups
reinforces some people's ideas about me being gay, but I also think
the stereotype that all gay guys like boy bands is dumb. In fact,
none of my gay guy friends like boy bands nearly as much as I do."he
explains.

Vanness Wu, who were being stalked by millions of fans all over asia,
even showered him with expensive gifts said "I like the attention I
get from the fans, it makes me feel much better about myself, it's a
solid inspiration for me in every task I do" Admittedly receiving
Dakota and Swatch Watches from a fan on his birthday and party at
Vivid Salon Store, Vanness, more than any expensive gifts he got was
more impressed with the Chinese Drawing with letter given to him by
an american fan during the grand opening of the second vivid salon. "
I don't think any of the group bands had a problem dealing with this,
but this is their way of reaching out to us, we cannot possibly stop
them from giving us presents, but we are not encouraging them to
totally give it all out, like buying gifts for us, your support and
love for us matter most than any other expensive gifts"

"Few guys love Jerry Yan!!!" proclaims a fan who is registered as
Closet Fan in site dedicated to Jerry Yan of F4. "At the time I had
this big thing for Tony Sun of 5566," he confesses. (He now thinks
F4's Jerry Yan is "the cutest guy in any group he has ever seen.") "I
love the `mysteriousness' of boy next door type image of Jerry," he
explains. "He just put across a sound and style that is easy to
listen to and his eyes makes me drool"

Closet Fans point out that even fully clothed, many boy bands are co-
opting looks pioneered by gay men. "They are more accessible to gay
youth because of the cross-pollination of fashion trends between gay
and straight cultures," he muses. "Look at the members of current
successful boybands who have body-conscious clothing, and body
piercings. These are all affectations that originated in the gay
subculture."

Popular group KOne member Darren added. "I have never had a gay fan
come up to me and say, `Hi, my name is so-and-so and I am gay,' " But
I don't think that a person's sexuality is important when it comes to
music."

"That's what's so incredible about the gift of music," echoes Milk of
Energy "You can write something, and even though maybe you're writing
it about one aspect of your life, someone can listen to it and have a
totally different interpretation. If that's ever able to help someone
through something, then we're doing our job. I hope that our music
has that ability because that's wonderful."

How will you handle if 1 member of your band is actually ----- GAY?

"It has nothing to do with that member being gay," insists WeWe,
Chinese Singer "The sound of most Asian boy bands is not right for
what's happening in pop music here. It didn't have to do with the
image. It had to do with the songs."

Should one member of a band of four or five come out, the straight
band members "could absorb" the fallout, argues former editor Fields.
But that wouldn't be his professional advice. "If I had a group I'd
say, `Sleep with who you want, but don't get up and announce it.' I
don't see what good it can do. I have never seen it really help
anyone's career."

10 Big "Shuai Ge"s, Hair Exam

Yan Cheng Xu (Jerry)

Considered a higher level type cut, intentionally disconnected cuts, making the hair at the crown assume a radiated style, along with layered ends and random highlights, not only makes it stand out, it also increases his "shuai qi".

Zhou Yu Min (Zai Zai)

A slightly flaired mid-length hairstyle, the angle of the cut is no more than 60 degrees, a moderate level cut. The object is to maintain the length of the hair at the top, suitable for "xiu4 qi4" (refined) type men with smaller heads and oval shaped faces.

The Boys in the Band

F4 may be the first Mandarin pop band that all of Asia can love. And they're helping to make Chinese culture cool.

by Alexandra A. Seno (With Erin Prelypchan in Manila) | Sep 22 '03

Many southeast Asians are full of worries about China, ranging from the effects of the region's new trade pact to how to compete with Beijing for foreign investment. But for tens of millions of young Asians, there is a far more burning question at hand: who is the cutest member of F4--Jerry, Vic, Ken or Vanness? The boy-band pop singers may be Taiwanese, but they sing in Mandarin and have Southeast Asia deep in the throes of a love affair with all things Chinese. Says Indonesian entertainment executive Daniel Tumiwa: "Mainland Chinese, Taiwanese, Hong Kongers. For ordinary people here, it doesn't matter; it's just Chinese to them. It makes no difference. F4 is huge, huge, huge."

Not to mention hot, hot, hot. F4 is the first Mandarin pop band to win a devoted--some would say fanatic--pan-Asian audience. In many places, they are even bigger than the local acts--highly unusual in Asia's widely segmented music market. Pop tastes in east Asia have traditionally been split, with the north looking to Japan and Hong Kong, and the south to their home markets. F4 has radically altered the equation. They've sold 3.5 million albums--an astonishing number on a continent where pirated CDs are the norm. In Manila last week, fans paid up to $200--the equivalent of several months' salary--to see F4 members sing and dance live. Their faces loom large on billboards advertising Pepsi along Bangkok's expressways. On streets throughout the region, children can be heard belting F4 lyrics in passable Mandarin. "This is the first time I've ever seen a group actually conquering all markets here," says Mishal Varma, Singapore-based vice president for talent relations at MTV Asia. "No one else has crossed over the way they have."

Their staggering appeal is not easy to explain--even among music experts. A la 'N Sync, they don't play any instruments and they are not great singers. Few people even know what they're singing about. But the four twentysomething band members--Jerry Yan, Vic Zhou, Ken Zhu and Vanness Wu--belt out frothy tunes with a bubble-gum beat, and possess clean-cut good looks that have landed them on magazine covers, posters, key chains, T shirts and the bedroom walls of countless teenage girls. Indeed, their most committed fans know not just their birth dates but their blood types as well. They seem to possess that elusive blend of charisma and good timing that strikes only rarely among musicians. "In life, there comes only one Elvis Presley, one Ricky Martin, one F4," says Varma.

Their wholesome image is a big selling point. In person, the bandmates tend to be exceptionally polite. During an interview, Wu, the only F4 member who speaks fluent English, tosses off lines like, "The Vanness dream is to take care of my family one day so they don't have to work so hard." Such emphasis on family values plays well with young Asians. "F4 represents something they can aspire to within reach," says Ian Stewart, CEO of The Filter Group, an Asian trend consultancy. "Compared with Robbie Williams, Asians can connect more with F4."

The band's rise began with "Meteor Garden," a slick television drama launched in Taiwan two years ago. Based on a Japanese comic book, the series revolves around a group of Taiwanese students nicknamed F4--"Flower Four"--because they are so pretty. The show, massively popular in Taiwan, also turned into a runaway hit on Southeast Asian TV when dubbed or subtitled in local languages.

The program ran for two seasons. Like many Asian actors, the four boys also sang and danced. They quickly released two albums under Sony Music, and began playing to sellout crowds from Hong Kong to Manila. Today, in addition to touring, making TV appearances and hanging out together, the members are also busy working on solo careers. "We want to grow," says Wu, who just finished shooting his first film, a Hong Kong martial arts movie.

Wu laughs when asked if he feels famous. Three years ago, he was living in his native Los Angeles (he is named after the famous street in L.A. and San Francisco) and working as a customer-service rep for a phone company. Then he decided to indulge his passion and pursue a show-business career in Taiwan, where his parents were born. For the first year, he slept on friends' couches in Taipei. Now, though he's glad to have his own place, he says the band is still adjusting to its stardom. "We had never met until 'Meteor Garden'," he says. "Our personalities are so different, which is probably why our fans like us." Indeed, there seems to be something for everyone. Wu says he thinks he's seen as the extrovert, Jerry Yan is the funny but mercurial one, Vic Zhou is quiet but "off the wall" and Ken Zhu is "cool and collected--but a deep thinker."

The members have turned into unwitting ambassadors for greater China. Thanks largely to F4, Thais, Filipinos and Indonesians--not generally known for their interest in contemporary Chinese culture--are embracing it with a vengeance. In Jakarta, "There is growing acceptance that Chinese boys are good looking," says Tumiwa. "It's quite a shift here." Indonesia has had a checkered history with its Chinese population, highlighted by anti-Chinese riots and targeted violence. Now, the only mobs are those lining up to see F4 perform in concert. Young people are adopting F4's style of dress, which tends to be casual with a flair, such as tight jeans and fitted white shirts. Fans have also copied their trademark long hairstyles. Says Bangkok hotel clerk Praphaphorn Sithuha, an admitted F4 fanatic: "F4 has good style, they sing well and are very funny."

The band members have also sparked an unlikely interest in the Mandarin language. "Now my workers are listening to Chinese songs all day long," says Charlie Clement, a flower-farm owner in the central Philippines. "They sing along but don't understand." At least one is going even further; Thai fan Praphaphorn has a friend who was so inspired by the group that she enrolled in Chinese language lessons.

Not surprisingly, everyone is trying to discover the next F4. TV executives in Manila, for example, have been snapping up other Taiwanese soaps, like "Lavender" and "MVP Valentine." In Jakarta, the Taiwan all-male hip-hop group Energy, which also sings only in Mandarin, has been performing to packed crowds. "They have good music," says Harry Hui, Asia president for Universal Music. "[But] teenagers in Southeast Asia don't yet think of China as a source of cool." Just give them time.

F4 officially disbands, competing money-wise

Translated by Jessie - www.kenforever.com

Jerry earned 17 million in two years, marginally winning Vic
F4 officially disbands, competing money-wise

Every now and then, rumors say that F4 has disbanded and united again. In fact, the four boys have “broken up” last year together with their contract as the spokesmen of the clothing company. They have split up and started working as individuals.

F4 rocketed into stardom by their Taiwanese drama, Meteor Garden. They used to film together, record their album together and take ads together, but since the Pepsi show on 8 March last year, the four boys began to develop separately. Earlier on, they did a Pepsi ad and two concerts in Thailand, where both contracts were signed last year. It’s hard to say whether F4 will appear as a “band” in the future.

Changes in their contracts lead to disbanding
The reason why F4 split up is mainly due to the changes in the contracts with their agent. At the time of F4’s debut, only Ken Chu belonged to GeFuHong’s “Fulong”. Jerry Yan, Vic Zhou and Vanness Wu were under Angie Cai’s management. This year, F3’s contract will end with Cai Jie respectively. Up till now, only Vic has extended his contract. Vanness’ contract has not ended yet, so his direction is undecided. On the other hand, Jerry joined Ken as one of Fulong’s stars.

They split up together with their clothing ad. F4 has been S&K’s spokesmen for a few years and their contract ended this year, so the four had to split up and take up different brand names. Jerry and Ken are both under Ge Jie’s management, so they will carry on as S&K’s spokesmen. Vic will represent a new brand, Kentex, whereas Vanness will be I.P. Zone’s new spokesperson.

Since that F4 has formally separated, it’s hard to avoid comparison. The first ones to bear the brunt is Jerry and Vic, as one of them released his album when the others drama was on air. It was said that the fans of both parties had arguments, however, it does not affect F4’s friendship. The other day when Jerry was in Changchun for a Pepsi function, he denied that he and Vic were not getting along well. He also said he hopes that everyone in F4 will develop pretty well in their careers.

*Note: F4 has never said that they are officially disbanded, it's just the interpretation of the media - Jessie

A Conversation from Meet & Greet with F4 Campaign

A conversation from Meet & Greet with F4 Campaign. On Aug 29, 2004.
After the concert 30 minutes.

Host : How about this concert in Thailand? Are you tired?
Vanness : Not much, the concert was very enjoy. There were a lot of fans. I feel happy and so pround.

Host : Why do you have the concert in Thailand too late? Because we saw you in the other concerts in other countries.
Jerry : Because each person was busy. For example, if I'm free, the other 3 are busy.

Host : Vic... Many fans left a spirit for you, because of they saw your hand hurt since at the airport.
ZaiZai : Thank you very much. I'm very utterly happy!

Host : And you might be the person who knows Thailand more than the others. How much Thai can you speak?
Ken : Not very much. The most words I could speak are about on the bus or shopping.

H : May I ask you a question, just kidding, if you can change the person between F4. Who do you want to be?
V : Vic is better. Because he has a comfortable life, he can sleep all day. (laugh)
ZZ : Then, I choose to be Vanness. Just cut new hair style (strange style), he can cheat many girls...(laugh)
H : Maybe you often change your hair style as same as a girlfriend?
V : No! I just like to change the hair style!
H : And Jerry, who do you want to be?
J : I want to be Vic, too. Because his life has only sleep and eat. I see he's happy. (laugh)
K : In fact, I'd like to be Vic, too. But his hand hurts now, I don't want already. (laugh)

H : If you have a free day. Where do you want to travel in Thailand?
ZZ : I ever went to Sa-mui Island. It was very fun. If I have a chance, I'll go there again.
H : Will you wear a swimming suit and run on the beach as same as the children?
ZZ : I might not (laugh), actually when I travel, Ialways wear a shirt, shorts, and slippers.
H : And the others, where do you want to travel?
J : I'd like to travel to Sa-mui Island, too. Because I've ever heard from Vic, and I interested.
ZZ : Eh! I forgot. There is Phuket Island, too.
V : I've ever seen a commercial on TV and an advertisement in a book about Phuket Island before. It's very beautiful. If you ask me, where I want to travel, I'll travel there.

H : The house of the fans here also beautiful, would you like to go?
V : If I'm free, I'll go... (laugh)
K : I've ever travelled the Sa-mui Island with Vic, I felt it's very beautiful. But there's many place I want to go more, such as (Ken spoke Thai) Haad-Yai, Cheang Mai.

H : If you can choose a girl ride a motorbike with you, same as a commercial. How about the girl do you want?
K : Every style. If you see me ride the motorbike alone, you can jump to behind my back!!
ZZ : In fact, presenter in the commercial, she's okay. I don't know how to tell my ideal girl.
V : It's better, if you want someone ride the motorbike for you, please call me to be a chauffeur. (laugh)
J : If I am, I need a big motorbike, very very big, because I'll take many many girls if I can do.

H : Nowadays, how about your work?
V : I'm preparing my 2nd album, because this album I compose songs, produce by my self. I'd like to hurry finish it. For the future I'll promote the album in Thailand again. (Grzzzz I always welcome back Vanness!!)
J : I have a solo album now. I'd like you cheer me as same as before, and I hope we'll meet again.
ZZ : I just finished a drama in Taiwan, and I knew that Thailand bought right already. Everybody here might see it soon.
K : I just finished a drama of CCTV, too. It might on air in this year. And I have a new commercial of Yamaha, too.

H : For the future, if you are not a singer, what do you want to do out side the entertainment?
V : Er...(so long) I'm busy about the new album now. So I don't have a time to think about the future. I'll answer you next time.
J : I'd like to play baseketball. I might be a baseketball player.
ZZ : I'd like to use independent life as same as a farmer.
K : There are many works are waiting for me. And I'm waiting for my sister come back from Paris. And I think we'll have a restaurant, or not , I might work about the behind.

H : If I want you say some word to your fans before go to bed, what will you say?
K : Good night, sweet dream.
ZZ : Good night. (Maybe Wan An in Mandarin)
V : (Spoke Thai) Phom Ruk Koon (It's "I LOVE YOU") (Grzzzzzzzz I love you, too)
J : See me in the dream tonight.

i totally agree with you!! The other boy bands seem to lack something of f4... hehe, no offense though. Anyway, f4 is soo popular in ALL parts of asia, no other groups in taiwan has done that. when jerry went on the "fen si ju le pu" show, they pratically had an international conference there! so suprised that people from usa, japan actually flew over to support him.hope the f4 spirit never dies, and do support jerry's album and zaizai's "Mars"!

I've always known about F4 since they first came out, but it's only recently I've become interested in them. I first heard about them when Meteor Garden I came out, and I thought they were pretty, but just a fad. Then, I actually sat down and watched Meteor Garden the other day (I live in UK but I'm Chinese) and I thought WOW! those boys have amazing charisma!!! I hope that they do more stuff together. If you think about how many fans they've gathered independently, their group stuff will be huge!! Me, I like Zaizai. Eat and sleep, thats so cute!!

Date Posted: Oct. 3, 2004

Jay Chou's Concert.. Good friend wishes...

Zaizai wrote: To Jay, who knows alot about basketball, wishing the concert to succeed, don't do like the robot style anymore. If you have any difficulties on dancing, you can ask me.

Vanness wrote: It's too much. It's so fast and you are opening the second concert. Good luck. Believed that it will be a very exciting one. (especially.. it is Jay's third concert. Vanness wrote wrongly.)

adding to the above, Jerry sent a msg too. His msg was as folllows: -

"When will you be writing a song for me as well?"

Vanness Wu Ken Chu, popular snatched up goods
In April this year, Pepsi invited F4 to flim a commercial, and they did a line of promotions. The Pepsi bottles which is printed with their faces on were the most popular. As the summer holiday is ending soon, many fans complained that they were unable to find Vanness and Ken's Pepsi bottles.

Several Taiwan fans, had to use exchange ways to get the Vanness face-printed bottles from Hong Kong fans. However, as Hong Kong did not release the Pepsi bottles printed with Ken's face, fans couldn't do anything too.

Taiwan's Pepsi in-charge said, The pepsi bottles would stop its stock in October. Regarding the printed bottles, it's to regards of the celebrity signing the Taiwan printed contract, thus unable to bring the bottle into Taiwan. And the fact was that, Pepsi bottles were actually manufactured in Taiwan than sent back to the head office. However, Pepsi would try to help fans to grab the chance to bring the bottles in.

However, the thing which makes fans excited is, after the October promotion, the Pepsi truck would be released. Although it was selling hotly in Hong Kong, it's not released in Taiwan yet. This, was a happy event for fans.

Thanks to Singtao

Are they going to be back together in the same management?
The contract will end soon, but Jerry haven't say yes for that. Wonder still F4 exists after this ??? down.gif

11/5 Meteor passes by Japan, Japanese crazy over F4

Japan's authoritative TV magazine BS recently published a lengthy article on F4 and the "Meteor Garden" miracle. Taiwan idols and Chinese trends will be Japan TV's new power. The drama's producer Angie Cai and actor Ken Zhu has gone to Japan and recieved an interview. Because of Angie's outstanding appearance and response capability the Japan media calls her "Taiwan's Most Beautiful Producer."

For a half of the year "Meteor Garden" has broadcasted on Japan cable TV to broadcasting various regional channels. Its influence is growing more and more, gaining more fans day by day. It's become Taiwan idol drama miracle in Japan.

Earlier Angie and Ken went to Japan to meet fans and also accepted an interview with BS magazine. Angie said that she's been trying hard to bring the four guys together for another collaboration. But bceause their plans are different, it's very difficult to have F4 film a drama together.

During the interview Angie also mentioned that Taiwan idol dramas are currently exporting's primary strength. Japanese manga's influence on Taiwan idol dramas are especially big. The magazine advertised F4's acting to singing very well. Jerry Yan, Ken Zhu, Vanness Wu, and Vic Zhou's personality and their recent news were covered in complete detail also.

Ken mentioned that he just went to China to film "City in the Sky." This drama also filmed in Japan. And Angie's separate F4 dramas in the recent years will come one after another. Vic Zhou, Ken Zhu and Vivian Hsu's "Love Storm" will be broadcasting on Japan cable TV after "Meteor Garden."

Angie believes Taiwan idols and dramas can get on the Japanese spectator's madness train and match in ability. In the future Taiwan idol dramas will expand and even work with China and Japan to create even more idols.
