Miriam Yeung has been shooting the music video of her new song "Small City, Big Matter" the past couple of days. Kevin Cheng plays Miriam's boyfriend in the video. Although this is their first time working together, they are asked by the director to "appear madly in love" as they hug and kiss in the kitchen, on the balcony, and even in the bathroom! Fortunately, they are both professionals, and they manage to pull the scenes off.

When asked if she felt embarrassed, Miriam said, "No, I'm used to hugging handsome men! Last time I worked with Daniel Wu, we also hugged a lot. But I'd say I hugged Kevin even more this time around."

One of the funny anecdotes was that Miriam fell asleep on Kevin's chest during shooting the other day because she was too tired. Apparently, she was supposed to put her head on his chest to have an intimate talk. Instead, she got too comfy there and fell asleep. When asked to comment, Miriam laughed, "He has such a broad chest! I bet he goes to gym all the time!"

[Ta Kung Pao & The Sun 01/10/04]

"War and Beauty" will finish airing on Saturday and the next series to air will be the TVB and Thai joint production "Split Second". The show's cast, including Patrick Tam, Kevin Cheng, Moses Chan, Mandy Cho, Lai Lok Yi and Marco Ngai took part in a war game promotion for the show yesterday where they were split into two games for a paintball match. Eventually Mandy, Kevin and Lok Yi's team lost and had to give up their backs as a target for the winning team to fire at them. Afterwards, Mandy indicated that her legs and thighs were hurting but she dare not turn around for fear of being hit in the face.

This is Mandy's first appearance in a series and although she does not have a very big part, she still hopes for good ratings. Kevin and Lok Yi really looked after her whilst filming and this made her very happy indeed as she felt very fortunate.

As for the show being aired straight after the highly popular "War", Kevin admits that he feels some pressure, but he will just have to see how the ratings go. He says: "After all the two shows are very different, one is very feminine and the other is more masculine. We all had a very happy time filming and we enjoyed the experience, so we feel we have already won." Talking of there being a lot of gossip in the female shows, but there being no gossip in this 'masculine' show, will this mean they lose out on the promotional stakes? Kevin says: "Men fight more openly! They wouldn't be so jealous or devious because that just looks bad!"

Patrick Tam has just finished filming the new Jackie Chan movie "King Tin Juen Kei" (Direct Translation: "Amazing Legend") and he says that Jackie arranged for a fast food trailer on the set for them, just like they do in Hollywood and this opened his eyes because he has never been treated this well. Later, Patrick will be heading back to the mainland to film CCTV production "Yang Nai Wu and Xiao Bai Cai" where he will star opposite Christy Chung in the title roles. It will be at least next year before he returns to film for TVB again.

Talking of the recent incident of 'acting becoming reality' [Ref: Dicky Cheung and Nicholas Tse were accused of beating up some Mainland actors off camera.], Patrick indicates that he will would like to see how Dicky is and as for one of the victims Wang Bai Zhao feeling that their apology was insincere and insisting on taking the incident to court, Patrick says: "As a friend, I would urge Dicky to write another notice because there is no point in ruining one's career in the mainland. There are often injuries during filming and as for whether it was intentional or not, then this is hard to tell because as an actor, you do not wish for NG's (retakes), otherwise you will be be even more injured with the extra blows. (Some people feel that Dicky does not respect Mainland actors?) I have worked with Dicky before in 'Duke of Mount Deer 2000' and from what I know of him, he is not that kind of person. He is very friendly to even the actors playing the smallest roles."

Also, with his role in "Split Second", Patrick says that he does have hopes for each show that is aired and this time, his hopes are even greater because he has quite a large role. Talking of the audience seemingly preferring the more feminine shows, he laughs: "I believe that the company will have calculated it correctly, after all series have to be varied and I hope that the men will not let us down. (Do you feel pressure from what can be gained?) Of course, I hope it will not be far off the ratings for 'War and Beauty'."

news about Kevin

After "War And Beauty", TVB's grand production "Split Second" is scheduled to start airing tognight. The cast members, including Alex Fong, Patrick Tam, Kevin Cheng, Yoyo Mung and Claire Yiu, took part in a promotional game yesterday. They were required to describe their characters in thirty seconds. Whoever failed would have two balloons burst right beside them. Turned out Alex was the big loser, and he could take someone to suffer with him. He picked Yoyo, although she begged him not to. To get back, Yoyo poked fun at Alex and revealed he went out for a massage during shooting. Alex then replied Yoyo went gambling.

Alex is confident "Split Second" will do well, and he jokes it's almost like "Richard Gere vs. Johnny Depp". It's well known that Alex is the "Eastern Richard Gere", but who's the "Eastern Johnny Depp"? Alex says it's Patrick and he's a good actor. He adds that Patrick is the kind of actor who only decides how to act a certain scene out at the last minute, but Alex likes it that way. Asked who is the better actor of the two, Alex says older audience might like him more, as he has kids in "Split", and he does everything to protect them. As for "Split" lacking rumors which helped "War" become more popular, Alex jokingly replies he acted like a producer during shooting, and decided to add or cut scenes on his own, so all the other cast members hated him.

Although Yoyo is often the victim of Alex's pranks, they are very much in sync one one issue. They both think the popularity of a show has nothing to do with rumors. Yoyo says "War" did have a lot of rumors when it started airing, but as the story progressed, people switched their attention to the plot and the acting, and this goes to show that the most important popularity factor is the quality of the production after all.

Yeah, Split Second has been airing in HK since this week and Kevin has already shown up from epi 1 throughout the whole series, I think, being the important role in this drama (as an inspector of CIB). His role is quite hard to play and I think there's still room for improvement to manage this role better.

im really glad to know that kevin is playing as an inspector. afterall, he's been in too many of those pretty boy roles, about time his characters get changed and move on to something more dramatic.

i heard that he dies out though, is this true?

its sad if he is, but hopefully this is somewhere towards the end and not at the middle of the story, cos i'd go crazy if it is. im expecting to see so much more of kevin, right now, currently watching hard fate ( well, lets stay im halting on this one ) and introducing myself to placebo cure.

[Ta Kung Pao 10/10/04]

"Split Second" is following on from "War and Beauty" and after its first week of airing, it does not seem to be attracting the same volume of viewers as "War" and is being accused of copying plotlines from "Infernal Affairs" and "24" as many scenes look vaguely familiar. At a promotional event held in a shopping mall yesterday, cast members Kevin Cheng, Yoyo Mung and Patrick Tam strongly defended the show, saying any similarities are coincidental and if people are discussing the show, then it proves that they have been watching, so it is a good thing.

Kevin says he is not worried about the ratings, after all it has only been airing for a week and it is difficult to compare with "War". As for the allegations that the show is a copycat of "Infernal Affairs" and "24", he feels that maybe the show has some very similar background and storyline, in particular when it comes to characters and the emphasis on time, so this makes it easy for people to compare, but it is in no way a direct copy, merely a show of the same genre.

Patrick also indicates that the show is not a copy, but does bear some shadows of the other shows. With the suggestion that this show will not be able to attract the housewife viewers, Patrick feels that to attract male viewers is a good thing because this means that the men can go home earlier. Also, an original soundtrack has been released for the show, but Patrick does not appear on the cover. He explains that this is because the record was released about six months ago and he was still contracted to Chinastar and due to copyright issues, he was not able to appear on the cover of this album and he feels rather helpless and disappointed about it.

Yoyo says she has heard some accusations of the show being a copy and feels that this is just people looking for something to talk about, but this is better than the show having no gossip at all. It also proves that the television industry is very great and has many viewers supporting it. Since the show has aired, she has not had many scenes so far, but she indicates that she does play a major part in the series because if it was not then she would not have taken it on. Her scenes have just not emerged as yet. There were some reports yesterday that Charmaine Sheh has three series in the nominations for "My Favourite Female Lead" and a higher chance than anyone else to win the award. Yoyo says that she has never pinned any hopes on winning the award and she is more bothered about the ratings that the show receives.

Kevin Cheng has had plenty of rumours lately, firstly linking him with 'Yu Fei' Sheren Tang and most recently, pulling him together with Shirley Yeung. Magazine reports accuse Shirley of 'seriously flirting' with him and with his fair share of female company, Kevin was the only man with four ladies at the promotion yesterday for "Split Second", working with Yoyo Mung, Claire Yiu, Fiona Yuen and Mandy Cho and the envy of many!

In response to the latest gossip, Kevin indicates helplessly that the media's imagination is getting bigger and bigger. He has not seen the reports in question and insists that he and Shirley are just friends. Earlier they filmed together in "Loving You" (aka "The Threat of Love") but they have not really kept in touch after filming ended. Shirley has been accused of being rather flirtatious all along, but Kevin says he does not feel this: "She has a boyfriend, don't mess around!"

As for his rumours with Sheren, Kevin says that after reading the report, he finds that about 10% of it is the truth. He says that he and Sheren are good friends, but they are not dating and for her to find her popularity, he is pleased for her because after so long in the industry, she is finally reaping the rewards.

Kevin and the four ladies demonstrated Thai Boxing in yesterday's promotion for "Split Second", but the four girls seemed rather hapless as they kept frightening Kevin into stepping back to avoid being kicked in critical areas. Kevin says that after watching a Thai Boxing match in Thailand, he has developed an interest for the sport upon returning to Hong Kong in the hope of making his figure even more attractive. He says that he has been learning for about two or three months: "If you have not learned it before, you will not know your own strength and it would be terrible if they kicked me. Usually when I am training, then I will wear suitable protection, but I didn't have it on for the promotion today."

[Ta Kung Pao & The Sun 22/10/04]

Charmaine Sheh, Raymond Lam, Tavia Yeung and Kevin Cheng were filming on location in a certain restaurant yesterday for TVB's new series "Yummy Yummy". In the show, there will be a triangular affair between Charmaine, Tavia and Kevin.

Recently, Kevin has been pulled into rumours involving him with Sheren Tang and Shirley Yeung. Working alongside Charmaine who has plenty of rumours of her own, is he worried about more stories being written? He says: "I have never had much gossip all along, only recently. I have worked with Charmaine before in two series, so there is no reason for the rumours to start now. I have also known Tavia for a while as well, so if there were any feelings between us, it would have started long ago, so I feel very safe in the arrangement this time. We will just go to work as normal and not be affected by any reports." He also adds that when he met with these incidents in the past, he would definitely lose his temper, but after so many years of baptism in the industry, he has no temper left and just laughs it all off.

As for Charmaine, is she worried about being linked with Kevin? She laughs: "We have known each other for a long time and I am already immune to him." Earlier Charmaine was in Beijing filming for "Tossing Rain Turning Cloud" and because she lost her appetite, she lost two to three pounds whilst she was away, but she says that when she films on location in Singapore, she will put on weight because there she can have her favourite Ba Kut Teh and Satay. When asked if her waist has gone down to 21 inches, she replies that it is still at 22-23 inches.

Raymond was working despite being ill: "I have had two fevers in the last two weeks with nausea and diarrheoa. At first I thought I would be okay after taking some medicine, but I wasn't and had to go and see a doctor. The doctor told me to get some rest, but I had to work. After filming 'Twin of Brothers', my body has become rather weak because I have not had a rest at all."

Kevin Cheng and Tavia Yeung will also filming for "Yummy Yummy" and wearing a market owner's outfit, Kevin was mocked by Tavia, saying that he has to wash for at least fifteen minutes before he can come near her.

Kevin will be playing a chicken seller in the show and will be in and out of the markets and Tavia is very afraid of bird flu. In order to research his character, Kevin paid some visits to a market to experience life there and he says that markets nowadays are very clean and not as dirty as he imagined because the stallowners are very focussed on hygiene. The most meaningful experience for him was each time he went to the markets, he was surrounded by many housewives all the time, praising his performance in "Split Second" and was offered free drinks from some of the stall owners. Some of the customers even taught him how to handle the chickens, telling him not to blow on the chicken's rear end and to wear gloves before grabbing the chicken and so he is not afraid of contracting bird flu at all.

Having just had a break, Tavia was in good spirits and earlier she visited Canada for a week to refresh herself. Talking of the new show having many scenes at the market, she syas that she is worried about the hygiene of the marketplace, because her impression since she was young is not a good one, finding it damp and dirty. Also as the series will be filming summer scene during wintertime, she says it will be quite hard work.

Ratings reports indicate that "Shine on You", "Virtues of Harmony" and "Split Second" maintained last weeks ratings of 31, 32 and 28 points and Sunday's "Super Trio Show" rose by 12 points to 31 points.

Bernice Liu and Kevin Cheng were recording yesterday for Metro Radio's radio drama "Let it be, for Purple loves Red..." and as they had to complete the entire recording in a day, it was a rather rushed affair. This is the second time that they have worked together as Bernice and Kevin will be performing together at the TVB anniversary celebration, but their first radio drama and as Bernice cannot read Chinese, she had to trouble her father to annotate the entire script for her all of the previous night and then she had to practice her Cantonese pronunciation hard after that. She says: "Luckily I can record it a line at a time, so it's not a problem."

Since entering showbiz, Bernice has had quite a lot of gossip and she says that at first, her parents were quite worried for her, but now they understand that many reports are exaggerated or made up. As her parents often visit her at work, they have got to know her friends and colleagues, including rumoured boyfriend Moses Chan. They find that the people around her are all very friendly and so they are happy to allow Bernice to continue her career in showbiz.

Kevin will also be singing the theme tune to the radio drama as well as being the male lead and not having stepped into a recording studio for five years, Kevin felt that returning was great fun. When asked if he has plans to return to the music industry, he says he has not because he will be concentrating his career on series at the moment. As for the future, he will just go with the flow.

TVB's new serial "Yummy Yummy" has started filming, and producer Wong Sam Wai was working with the cast in Zhu Hai earlier, including Tavia Yeung, Raymond Lam, Kevin Cheng, Kenix Kwok [?? possible error by the reporter, maybe he means Charmaine Sheh], Ng Ka Lok and the Singaporean actor Yang Zhi-Long.

Later, Tavia shot a rowing scene with Kevin, Raymond and Zhi-Long. Although Kevin and Raymond have known each other for a long time, this is their first time working together. They seem really close on the set, and there have been speculations that it's a clever move to fend off possible rumors with the female leads. Kevin says, "I don't worry about being romantically linked to Charmaine Sheh! We're not possible, as we don't share that special 'feel'. I know rumors may draw more attention, but I hope they won't be too exaggerated!

Raymond says this new production is not as tiring as the ancient/kung fu stuff he's done in the past, although some scenes are shot in not-so-flattering places (for example, the river Tavia mentioned). As for the possible rumors, Raymond says, "I knew Tavia a long time ago, and we've collaborated for quite a few times. I also worked with Charmaine in "Tossing Rain, Turning Cloud", and nothing happened. Therefore, there shouldn't be any rumors. I'm not worried at all."

[The Sun & Oriental Daily 07/11/04]

***WARNING: SPOILERS FOR "SPLIT SECOND"***

TVB series "Split Second" has stirred up much criticism since it has been aired. Reader Ms Lo complains that the storyline is illogical and the suggestion that the Chief of Police played by Ko Hung received bribes is detrimental to the image of the police force.

Miss Lo goes on to point out that as the ICAC was established in 1974, there was a pardon issued for all the police officers at the time who received bribes, so if Ko Hung's character received bribes in 1973, then there is no reason for this to be held against him. As for a Criminal Intelligence Bureau Senior Inspector (played by Kevin Cheng) to interview and investigate a Chief of Police, then this is the wrong procedure.

The show's producer Lo Wing Yin responds saying: "Ms Lo seems to know the storyline so well, so she must be a super fan of the show. However she needs to be more patient and watch the rest of the show to find out that Ko Hung has been set up and it will not affect the image of the police force. When we filmed the show, we did all our research beforehand and if there are any more doubts, we will investigate this further and respond to the viewers comments."

***WARNING: SLIGHT SPOILER FOR "SPLIT SECOND" ***

Stars from "Split Second" Patrick Tam, Kevin Cheng, Yoyo Mung, Mandy Cho and Marco Ngai took part in a promotional event for a 3G mobile network yesterday and attracted a big crowd.

Since the show began airing, the ratings have been rather mediocre and there were reports yesterday that viewers were complaining about the logic of the storyline and how they were not properly researched. Responding to this, Kevin says: "The viewers now are really sharp, but for them to watch the show in so much detail it makes me happy. I did not know when the ICAC was established, so maybe we did overlook this and I am thankful to the viewer for pointing this out. (Are you worried about the series affecting the image of the police?) Everyone must understand that television is just a form of entertainment and the actors will always do their best to make it seem realistic, but I hope that the differences between fiction and reality can be identified and that this viewer will not take it all so seriously. Our aim is not to tarnish the reputation of the police and to be honest, my ambition when I was younger was to become a police officer."

[Ta Kung Pao & The Sun 17/11/04]

Charmaine Sheh, Raymond Lam, Tavia Yeung and Kevin Cheng took part in the blessing ceremony for new series "Yummy Yummy" yesterday and after earlier reports of her lunching with Lok Yik Ling and Catherine Tsang, Charmaine was asked whether she is now confident about winning the anniversary award. She laughs: "Is it that easy? I did not arrange to meet them, they asked me to eat with them and we do meet up for lunch usually, but with the anniversary approaching, everyone is rather sensitive." She admits that she is confident of winning an award, but the two things cannot be linked together in this way. She also refused to reveal what the conversation was about, just mentioning that Catherine told her to keep working hard and the company will give her plenty of opportunities.

Charmaine says that if she wins the award, then she will think about meeting someone for marriage, because her grandma who is in her nineties has seen her working so hard and has hurried her to get married and give up working. When asked whether her target partner will be the winner of the male lead award, she laughs that she has not thought about this matter, but he will be her perfect male lead. Charmaine has chosen her outfit and jewellery for the anniversary show and as she has a few sets to choose from, she has not worked out the value, as the most important thing is that it suits her image, but she is interested in seeing Gigi Lai's $30 million worth of jewels.

On the other hand, Gigi, Bowie Lam and Moses Chan were rehearsing for their 'clog dance' for the anniversary celebration and when asked about Charmaine's lunch meeting, Gigi laughs that everyone has lunch meetings with the bosses. Bowie also laughs that after the success of "War", all the cast members have had lunch meetings with the bosses and Moses Chan says that he is often on the phone to the bosses. As for what they talk about over dinner, Gigi says it is just an ordinary meal, because the company likes to meet with its staff once a month.

Although Yoyo Mung has worked with TVB for a number of years, this is her first appearance at an anniversary celebration. She says: "Dancing with Adam, even with a dance background myself is quite nerve-wracking. Also, I have to prepare an evening gown, so the feeling is like getting married, having to rush around to prepare. I have chosen my outfit now and I have sponsors for my jewellery, but I don't know the value of it. I have also bought some shoes to go with the dress." She says that she does not care for the competition between the ladies as long as her own outfit matches her.

Talking of "Split Second" only reaching ratings of 26 points in the final week, Yoyo mentions that is it better than one of her other series "The Green Hope" that only reached 25 points. She says that the good reviews and fresh storylines are more important. Kevin says that he is a little disappointed because after several months of hard work, then naturally they had hoped for better results. Maybe this genre is too fresh, so he had suspected that it would not be too suitable for all of the audience, but they wanted to have a breakthrough, so there was a conflict of interests. He says: "Whenever something new comes along, then it is a risk and there will be a day when it will succeed. 'War and Beauty' for instance was another new experiment, but it did well." He thinks that the company should not stop trying new things because of ratings, otherwise they will not be able to keep all the viewers and in the long run, fresh is what they want.

Adam Cheng and the eight beauties will be doing a 'Horn Dance' and were rehearsing yesterday. Some of the female artistes were absent, but those taking part included Anne Heung, Tavia, Leila Tong and Yoyo. During rehearsals, Adam accidentally pulled apart Tavia's collar and nearly went where he shouldn't have. A rather embarrassed Adam was asked if he had a reputation and he replied: "I have made mistakes, but there have been no complaints! (Who was it?) I was in a muddle so I made a lot of mistakes to start with, but I do it sincerely, thanks to the arrangement of the company." Adam says openly that this performance will not only overcome difficulties with the costumes, the dance moves have left him with headache and sore knees. However, he is determined to pull off the performance as he says jokingly: "TVB spirit - no-one dies for nothing!"

[Sing Pao 23/11/04]

On the set of "Yummy Yummy" yesterday, were Kevin Cheng, Kiki Sheung, Carlo Ng and Ben Yeo and Carlo was dressed in a ninja costume. In the show he plays the judge and will play many different characters as he chooses the contestants for the competition. Kevin plays a chicken seller in the first scene and maybe he was too nervous, but he lost his phone the previous day.

The scene was filmed in a market and attracted a crowd of locals to watch, crreating quite an atmosphere. Playing the chicken seller for the first time, Kevin says that it is quite difficult because the scene just showed him catching and tying up the chicken. He said: "Earlier, the company had arranged for me to get some experience at the Kowloon City Market and learn from a chicken stand big sister. We became good friends and I even took her for dinner. I thought that I could show off my skills today, but the tasks I have been given are very simple, so I hope that I will be okay. I have tried to catch free range chickens in China, now that is very difficult. (How was the shoot?) Originally I was a little upset because I only finished work last night at 4am and when I got home, I found that I had lost my phone. When I called back to the company to see if it had been found, I did not get a response and I thought it was gone forever. I am lazy and stored all my phone numbers in the phone, so losing the phone was a small matter, losing all my numbers was a bigger problem. As a result I was a little unhappy, but this morning, the lady in the dressing room called me saying that she had found my phone. I was so happy that I jumped up and my whole body just relaxed, so I have treated everyone today as well as thanking that lady of course!"
