Who's fit to judge the idols?
The judges made American Idol interesting. Here's who we think should judge the Singapore version
*source frm WEEKEND TODAY dated Jan 10-11, 2004 (Sat - Sun) by Yong Shu Chiang

Posted Image

TALENTED contestants may be important, but what would American Idol and other local versions of the show be without their judges?

The franchise wouldn't be one of the hottest sensations in world television, that's for sure.

Though the programme was created initially as Pop Idol for the UK television market, its US cousin is its best ambassador.

Last year, the second season of American Idol captured the imagination of many Singaporeans.

Eager to support their heroes in a group of performers that included eventual winner Ruben Studdard, Clay Aiken and Kimberly Locke, an average of 240,000 viewers tuned in to the programme. About 300,000 people watched the final episode.

And a third season of the show will debut on MediaCorp TV Channel 5 on Jan 22 at 10pm.

When it was announced recently that there would soon be a Singapore Idol, to be produced by MediaCorp TV and the first programme of its kind in Asia, much attention was focused on who would be the judges.

Selena Ho, vice-president of network programming and promotions for Channel 5, wouldn't name the names of those being sought, out of courtesy to them.

She did say, however, that they had to be "established in the entertainment industry and have a personality and character of their own".

Such secrecy hasn't stopped people from speculating and bandying names about.

But if fans were expecting local clones of Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, and Randy Jackson — the American Idol judges who are seen as archetypes for the programme's judges — they may be disappointed.

Cowell is famous for his nasty barbs, some of which had reduced contestants to tears.

On the other extreme end of the spectrum is Abdul, who's known for her gentle comments and sentimentality.

Which leaves Jackson in the middle, and he's come to be the moderate good guy who goes both ways.

According to Sue Adams, the managing director of Fremantle Media, Asia - which franchises the Idol format in the region - the key criterion for selecting judges is credentials.

"Whatever you might say about Simon Cowell, he's got the expertise and experience to back it up," she said.

Cowell is an established music producer, whose credits include signing the popular boy band, Westlife, to a recording deal.

Meanwhile, Abdul is a former chart-topping singer while Jackson is also a music producer.

Adams stresses that it is more important for the judges of Singapore Idol to have chemistry, rather than try to emulate their US counterparts.

"There has to be the right balance," she said. "They need to have different personalities, obviously. If all three were Simon Cowells, that wouldn't work either."

Taking a look into our crystal ball, TODAY jumps on the Singapore Idol bandwagon and puts forth our picks for judges.

Biography for Fann Wong

Birth name
Fann Woon Fong
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nickname
Bao Bei (Chinese for 'precious'), Shopping Queen, Caldecott/MediaCorp Princess
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Height
5' 7¼" (1.71 m)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mini biography
Fann Wong is a Singapore-born actress-singer-model of Chinese origin. Born on 27 January 1971, she derived her artiste name, Fann Wong, from a combination of her father's surname (Fann) and her mother's surname (Wong). With GCE 'A' Levels and a diploma in fashion merchandising from the La Salle International Academy, her break into showbiz was when she was 16, and was crowned champion of a beauty contest in Singapore which she participated in. She stayed in the modelling circuit between 1990 to 1994, occasionally flying to Taiwan to film product endorsements for products such as Oil of Ulan. In 1994, she was discovered in Taipei by a Singapore TV producer who invited her back to Singapore to act in a drama serial, "Mei meng cheng zhen" (1994). Fann's natural acting talent was discovered in the show, and this led to her career transition as a television actress based in Singapore. A slew of television projects soon after - including her third and award-winning serial, "Yuan jin jin sheng" (1995) - raised her profile, status and popularity such that she became a top name in Singapore by 1995. In 1996, another career transition for her happened when she released her first solo Mandarin pop album, 'Fanntasy' (1996) in Singapore. However, due to a contractual problem which occurred in late 1996 between MediaCorp (her management agency in Singapore) and a Taiwanese artiste management agency, Fann was suspended for half a year. During that period, she attended vocal and drama classes in Shanghai. After she was released from her suspension period in mid-1997, she went over to Taiwan and released a repackaged version of that album, titled 'I Live Alone'. It was an immense success in the Taiwanese music market, achieving four IFPI Platinum awards in sales records and moving over half a million units in the East Asian market. In 1998, Fann's gongfu TV drama, "Shen diao xia lü" (1998), was a runaway success in Taiwan and China. It immensely increased Fann's popularity in the region and certified her as a credible actress in the Chinese-speaking world. At the same time, the release of her very commercially-successful second solo album, 'Shopping' (1998), won her many fans in the region, including the award-winning Hongkong director, Tung-Shing Yee, who noticed her 'Shopping' MTV on Channel V in Hongkong and invited her to star in her first big-screen Hongkong movie, an art film titled Zhen xin hua (1999). Her breakthrough role as a delinquent teenager who finally made good introduced her to Hongkong movie audiences and won her a prestigious nomination for the Best New Performer Award at the Hongkong Film Awards (the Hongkong equivalent of the Oscars). The success of the movie led to another Hongkong feminist movie titled Yüeliang de mimi (2000), in which Fann had a starring role opposite Michelle Reis and Teresa Lee. In these two years, she also found time to continue her prolific singing career, releasing soundtracks to all her movies and TV serials as well as dueting with the British boyband, 911 in the English classic, 'Private Number'. Hence, in 2000, she became the first Singaporean to stage a large-scale concert ('My Story - Fann Wong In Concert') at Singapore's Indoor Stadium. It was a major media focus and a sell-out gig. Later in the year, Fann returned to her modelling origins again when she was invited to Hongkong to do an artistic pictorial helmed by renowned award-winning Hongkong conceptualists William Chang and Wing Shya. The pictorial, titled 'In +he Mood', found a ready market in Asia. It was noticed that made-in-Singapore serials like "Bu bu wei ying" (1999) and "Xing suo" (2000) won Fann the most critical acclaim and viewership ratings, so in 2001, her focus switched back to being a television actress, with 4 drama serials and one Taiwanese web movie in 2001 alone. She worked with renowned Taiwanese producer Pei-Pei Yang in a blockbuster Taiwanese serial "Qing she yu bai she" (2001), which showcased her versatility in acting. This serial raised Fann's profile and popularity in Taiwan and later in the year, Fann was invited as a guest presenter for Taiwan's most prestigious movie award event, the Golden Horse Awards. In early 2002, she also appeared in the Ka-Fai Wai-produced China-Singapore collaboration, "You qing you yi" (2002). During this period, she diversified her career portfolio by actively hosting travelogue shows such as "Travel Hunt: Japan" (2001) and "Fann Adventure" (2002). In 2003, she appeared alongside international stars Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson on cinema screens worldwide in her first Hollywood film, Shanghai Knights (2003), which gave her career an international boost. She was nominated in the 2003 MTV Movie Awards (Best Fight category) for her kickfighting role in this movie.

Personal quotes
"I don't mind [what people may say]. I don't avoid it. I just tell myself I have to cope with it. As I go along, I build up an immune system. I do hope I have a mentor, but you still have to go through many things by yourself. The only person who can help you is yourself."

"To me, success is when you are able to do what you are happy doing, and at the same time, can bring that happiness to other people."

"I would love to do more Hollywood movies, not because it's Hollywood, but because there are all these great producers and talented people out there to work with."

"I like to try something new, every time, for every project. I don't like to be in this very safe environment, I like to take risks. It's more interesting that way!"

what has been reported is just a publicity nightmare which happens often as fann is popular

the paper which published this article is owned by rival company from company fann having contract with, so its biased againts fann, the reason why this paper always come up with something like this is basicly because they couldnt get any of fann's private life story, so "make up" stories often r the one pop up from it, how silly is that really ... the credibility of a good reporter should be question as well, well ... its entertainment world, what else can u say!

for those who close and know fann well, they know whats the real stories ...

I like to look like Fann Wong, she's really beautiful!
Few years back, I totally have 80% of her looks in Shanghai Knights, I'm so proud that I have resemblance of her because she's just so pretty...
I hope she'll continue to be the most popular actress in Singapore :wasntme

Biography for Fann Wong

Birth name
Fann Woon Fong
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nickname
Bao Bei (Chinese for 'precious'), Shopping Queen, Caldecott/MediaCorp Princess
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

etc...

Sorry I just wanted to correct Fann's nick name... it's accually Zhu Er Bao not Bao Bei.
Zhu means 'swine or pig" from her Chinese zodiac and Er Bao means 'second precious' for Chinese.

Let me update some news on Fann Wong.

Fann is currently filming her new movie called "Longan Porridge" in Taiwan. She has finished filming the Singapore-Germany Co-production called "House of Harmony", which also stars Maggie Q.

After finishing the movie in taiwan, she will be back in Singapore to start on a local drama series with Thomas Ong and Qi Yuwu.here is some news in chinese

Also, Zhong Wu Yan, starring Gallen Lo has been released in Singapore.

Fann's split between two men
September 27, 2004

Fann Wong's back to helm this new local thriller, and her co-pilots include ‘old flame' Thomas Ong, Yvonne Lim and Qi Yuwu.

The last time we saw MediaCorp Princess Fann Wong in a local TV drama was November last year. Now 10 months later, she is finally back in the studios on Caldecott Hill!

Looking tired but still ever the polite and friendly star, Fann zipped right into the imaging for new local drama Jing Zhong Ren (literally The Person in the Mirror) after filming Longan Porridge (Long Yan Zhou) in Taiwan.

Produced by the same team responsible for 3 Women and A Half and An Ode To Life, Jing Zhong Ren stars Fann Wong as a young comic illustrator Wang Yixin with split personality disorder. Her alter-ego Joe Ann is the complete opposite; while Yixin is gentle and mild, Joe Ann is aloof, wild and fashionable.

The buzz about this drama is its unexpected story plot twist, which of course we won't reveal here. But suffice to say, Jing Zhong Ren, like Channel 8's last thriller The Crime Hunters starring Xie Shaoguang, will surprise you and keep you guessing till the end!

Freddy Leow, the story planner for Jing Zhong Ren, came up with the script based on the legal loophole where people with split personalities disorder are exempted from their crime.

“I think this loophole is very fun to play and work with,” Freddy explains. “I specially wrote the roles of Yixin and Joe Ann for Fann. She is very versatile; she can bring out both the femininity of a soft-spoken lady and the spontaneity and edge of a wild child.”

The Cast

Thomas Ong returns to the small screen as Zhou Jiansheng, Yixin's love interest, while Qi Yuwu is his brother Jianwei, who's madly in love with Joe Ann. Yvonne Lim also stars as Jiansheng's childhood friend and secret admirer.

Some of you may remember the 1996 drama Wild Orchids, where Thomas and Fann acted as lovers. How will these two fare with their onscreen chemistry after a hiatus of 8 years?

Says Thomas, “We were still newbies when we did Wild Orchids, and she has come a long way since then, but she still looks as beautiful and young! I don't think our chemistry will be any lesser, after all, we know each other. This is a reunion.”

This is Yvonne's first local drama after spending the last 7 months in China filming 4 period dramas: Chi Zi Cheng Long, Zhong Wuyan, Bao Lian Deng and Yan Hua San Yue.

“I'm overjoyed that I can finally ‘come back' to modern society!” Yvonne laughs heartily. “It has been quite a long time since I was last in a local drama. I miss the local audience actually. Thomas had already left the entertainment industry when I joined, but I've watched his dramas and I think he's an outstanding actor. I look forward to acting with him!”

How The Story Goes

Zhou Jiansheng grew up abused by his temperamental and drunkard of a father. His mother, in a bid to save both Jiansheng and his brother Jianwei, tried to escape. When Mr Zhou learnt of the plan, he caught hold of Jiansheng and threatened to kill Mrs Zhou. Left without a choice, Mrs Zhou took Jianwei away, promising to come back for Jiansheng.

Jiansheng was soon taken away to a home, and Mrs Zhou thus lost contact with the boy.

Years later, the grown-up Jiansheng (Thomas Ong) has been to jail and back, and now works as a small chef. He meets the gentle Yixin (Fann Wong) and slowly falls for her, oblivious to the affections of his childhood friend Xiaofen (Yvonne Lim).

Jianwei (Qi Yuwu) has led a very privileged life and is now the General Manager and heir of Prometix Corporation. Proud and confident, the rakish playboy finds himself utterly drawn to the charismatic and beautiful Joe Ann (Fann Wong).

Soon, Xiaofen senses something out of the ordinary about Yixin and Joe Ann. At this point, Xiaofen faces inexplicable and life-threatening accidents. Can she find out the truth in time to save Jiansheng and Jianwei?

Filming for Jing Zhong Ren has just started and will continue to December. Watch out for this exciting thriller next year!

she has all along been compared with 1 of the local actresses in spore call zoe tay..

it's always been said that while fann has the look, zoe has the acting skill.. it ever happened that both fans ever got into some bickering in 1 of the spore local television award.

it's no doubt that she looks good on screen.. but i think that too much of emphasized on apperance and no effort puts on to improve her acting skill wont do her good... she should take andy lau as an example, who earns his good critics though hardworks, and look at him now, his acting skill has already supercedes his good look (well, he's still look good...)

MEDIACORP darlings Fann Wong and Christopher Lee have finally gone public with their long-rumoured romance.

The Malaysian-born Lee, 34, said he fell for Fann more than three years ago. And wedding bells will not be far off for the Singaporean actress, also 34, said she would not wait till she was 40, as “I will want to have kids”.

Since Brave New World in 1996, the two stars have shot several TV serials together, including Looking for Stars in 2000, Madam White Snake in 2001 and Brotherhood in 2002.

Rumours of their relationship have been rife since Fann broke up with a Chinese Indonesian businessman six years ago.

According to the report, the couple have got the blessings of their parents. Lee won over Fann's parents soon after they started dating while Fann met his parents in Malacca once when they were available at the same time.

What did his parents make of his superstar girlfriend? :blush

“My parents didn't say much. They're sure to support their son's girlfriend,” he said. “They just want us to go home more often.”

Fann Chan, she's very pretty and I find her very attractive. She was in one of Jackie Chan's movie, her role was great. She's in some Taiwanes movies, in some ancient series, she was really good. She's a great actress.

She has been around for quite some time. Liked her in Shanghai Knights with Jackie and Owen Wilson, funny stuff.
Her other movies are not bad and she is talented in both acting and singing. She move up to stardom with both looks and hardwork.
The years are catching up to her and she only have a few good years left.
