--아닙니다 is used for nouns, for example, 책이 아닙니다 --> It's not a book 새가 아닙니다 --> It's not a bird

--지 않습니다 is used for verbs and adjectives. Bear in mind that, there's always '지' right before '않습니다'. For example, 제가 서점에 가지 않습니다 --> I'm not going to the bookstore. 이 집은 크지 않습니다 --> This house is not big

Is there one commonly approved transcription for Korean? Something like pinyin in Chinese or revised Hepburn in Japanese? I saw a song transcribed in at least 2 different ways and I was wondering, if there exists something like that in Korean.

I'm not really sure about a commonly approved romanization for Korean.. you can check in Wikipedia for more info, http://en.wikipedia....ation_of_Korean

But seems that most of the Korean songs aren't really correctly-romanized or 'elegantly-'romanized, I should say.. ^^

You will find it much easier once you learn Hangul, Korean characters. There are only 24 letters and it's not that difficult.

the verb endings of all these expressions are extremely informal. If you use them to anyone older than you or someone you just met (except for the little kids), they should be very offended. Be careful.

i would have thought learning through english would be better for pronunciation because of romanisation but that's just my opinion. i totally want to be fluent at korean xD it's so awesome >< im learning through rosetta stone but it's pretty confusing at times because its all just pictures and korean words :S

It uses Roman alphabet (however not all European languages use it - Russia Ukrainian, Belarusian, Bulgarian and a few other languages use Cyrillic alphabet - see wikipedia by yourself because I can't post links yet). I"m self teaching Korean too... and it's slow but who cares!!
Yeah I'm Chinese and learning Korean from Chinese is easy.. along with english for romanization.

Once you get the hang of the Korean alphabet, everything you read is pretty much straight forward because sometimes they borrow words from the Chinese language and the english language. And if you're stuck... it's always nice to have a Korean friend to help you out!

I agree with Kookies_n_Kream, Learn Korean after Chinese is very interesting, it is non too difficult. Learning Korean at first is quite easy, but more and more difficult then.
I think there isnt language easy to learn. It's depend on your ability, your desire and your absorbability

Cute rose, Glad to have you back! I think you chose a very good book. The author, Professor 김영기
has been teaching Korean for almost 30 years for many different levels at the George Washington University so her teaching method should be very effective.

I took a look at the download and I found it very informative and easy to understand with lots of comparisons between English and Korean and also explanations on grammar especially on particles, different speech levels, polite speech levels, usage of different verb endings etc.

Good luck with your Korean study. If you have any question, feel free to ask me.

• and the most confusing one is ᄅ when I can pronounce as R or L, I tried to figure it out but its soo puzzled to do so

btw is there's any workbook or practice sheets for kids who learning hangul becasue my nieces are trying to learn but using the book its kinda difficult for them

Yeah, I know what you mean. ㄷ(d) and ㅌ(t) and ㄱ(g) and ㅋ(k) sounds very similar sometimes. Also, there are cases that ㄷ ㄱ in writing become ㅌ ㅋ in pronunciation. As a beginner, you might find these rule a little complicated. The Good news is even if you pronounce it 'k' instead of 'g', you will be most likely to pass by. So, don't get too stressed out.

ㄹ is much easier.
if ㄹ is on the bottom of the character such as 서울(Suh'wool = Seoul), you pronounce it as 'L'
if ㄹ is on the top of the character such as 사랑(Sa'rang = love), you pronounce it as 'R'

As for workbook or practice sheets for kids who are learning Hangul, there are many but those are usually available where there are Korean communities. I found this on the web. I am not sure if this will be helpful for you or not. I will keep my eyes open for you if I have better info.

"ajeosshi" = Mister

"oppa" = older brother as said by a younger girl, could also mean a younger girl interested in an older guy would call him "oppa"
