Real Name: Choi Whee Sung
Stage Name: Wheesung (pronounced: Hwisung)
Nicknames: Real Slow
Birthday: February 5, 1982
Blood type: O
Height: 172 cm
Weight: 63 kg
Family: Parents & 1 Younger Brother
Education: Sunmoon University
Hobbies: Reading Comic Books

Wheesung was first part of dance-team "ING" when he debuted in 1997. He later became the lead vocals for the short-lived boyband "A4". Due to musical differences & disagreements with other group members, He left after the release of their first album.

After leaving A4, he was taken under the management of YG Entertainment's sister company M.BOAT and was trained for two years before releasing his first solo album in 2002. Even before the release of his first album, Wheesung attracted attention from music lovers after being highly praised by veteran singers Shin Seung Hoon, Yang Hyun Suk & Seo Taiji. His debut album gained great popularity and quickly reached the top ten in music charts. In 2003, he released his follow-up album, It's Real. It proved to be as popular as his first, making him the best selling artist of 2003 in Korea. Unlike his debut album, It's Real wasn't restricted to R&B and it included different musical elements like pop and hip-hop.

For his third album's performances, Wheesung choose to perform his first performance at a different show instead of the natural first choice, SBS' Inkigayo. This move not only angered SBS, it also fuelled a fierce disagreement between SBS and YG Entertainment. In the weeks that followed, SBS refused to let any artist belonging to the YG Entertainment & M.BOAT stable to perform in Inkigayo. In retaliation, Yang Hyun Suk, founder of YG Entertainment, posted a comment on YG's website stating that all artists under YG Entertainment would boycott the 2004 SBS Music Awards. The fued between the two companies ended after Wheesung performed his first comeback performance in SBS' Inkigayo, for his Love..Love..?Love..! album, in September 2005. He was the first YG artist to perform in SBS' Inkigayo in nearly a whole year.

His contract with YG Entertainment & M.Boat ended in March 2006. He signed a new contract that is reportedly worth 1.5 million won with his new company Orange Shock Agency. It was stated that he will be composing and producing more with his new company giving him more freedom to do so.

To date he has released 4 albums and participated in several other artists' albums.

He sings really good, and although he's not fluent in English, his pronunciation is incredible. I wish he stayed in YG Family though, but I guess YG just can't give him what he needs [like Big Mama who left too recently...]. When's his next album coming out? I heard he has military service to do like JinHwan, and I think its scheduled for 2008...

Second album - It's Real
Third album - For The Moment
Fourth Album - Love..Love..?Love..!

Mr. Real Slow! I'm trying to get all his songs for a collection...but he's not that active... My favourites are Pretty Lady, Goodbye Luv, Angel, Real Luv Story (Taebin! <3 ft him and Se7en) and this song I dunno the name of >.>''' It's like Sarang Hae Gae? Something....related to that, it's SeungRi's favourite song I think, SeungRi from Big Bang.

slow dead thread, hello!

really old news, fro november

Quote

Wheesung’s vocal cord problem

Wheesung revealed during the first stopover of his “2007 WHEESHOW” concert at the Daegu Exhibition Convention Center (EXCO) last November 24-25 that he is seriously considering having a vocal cord operation in January 2008.

“Park Hwayobi had surgery (last August) and her voice sounded like in her 1st album and Fly to the Sky’s Hwanhee too had an operation and his condition got better,” he reasoned.

On the day of the concert, Wheesung was actually not feeling good and had to take medicines but like a true singer, he performed with everything he has and did wonderful ad libs and high-pitched notes.

The concert hall was filled with his hit songs like “Love is Delicious♡,” “Even If You Get Hurt,” “With Me,” “Is it Not Possible,” and “Incurable Disease.”

The “2007 WHEESHOW” will continue its tour in Daegu on December 1-2, at the Choongnam University Jeongshimhwa Hall and on December 8-9, at the KBS Hall in Busan.

J and Whee Sung share a decade of friendship! [2007-12-10]

In light of the recent revelation that artist, composer and lyricist Whee Sung is a supporter of J's new album, fans have learned that the two artists have been sibling-like friends for ten years. They've long been encouraging each other as an older-sister/younger-bro pair. Their friendship began in 1998, when J was starting out as an artist and met Whee Sung, who was in the choreography team. Whee Sung recently lavished praise upon J's voice and gifted her with the song "Though I Sleep and Wake Again and Again," which he wrote just for her. J, meanwhile, was featured on Whee Sung's 5th album.

Some news about him: he's preparing a new album, with an old school RnB style hehe

Did anyone here go to see his concerts in the US?? I didn't, I'm not American =/

Wheesung is my favorite solo artist! His songs are so versatile, from ballads to pop to r&b.

It's not possible is a great song his voice is so moving and it always gets stuck in my head ^_^ ! He is also a great artist with duets, his voice sounds so good in them.

I think that his remake of Insomnia is better than the original even though I can understand the original and not his (English vs. Korean). Whenever I hear Craig David's version I always end up singing Wheesung's instead!

I agree with Doreli =) And Wheesung's MV for Insomnia is more interesting.
I prefer Wheesung i his old school RnB/ballad style, he can sing many genres but mainstream stuff are not really what I want for him.

But please tell me what album "It's not possible" is from...I don't remember this song.

There are many beautiful songs I like from Wheesung, like Angel (his Englsih accent is cuute), Walk to the sky, We're Not crazy, A Man and a Woman in a car.

I heard that it was from his fifth album but I'm not certain.
I will definitely have to check those other songs out!

Wheesung Eyes U.S. Market With 'Darkchild'

Local R&B hotshot Wheesung has teamed up with super-producer and VP of A&R for Island Def Jam records Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins, the singer's management camp Pop Up Entertainment announced yesterday.

The deal will see the 27-year-old release his first digital single stateside early next year with two or three as-of-yet undetermined songs.

Wheesung, most famous for his hugely popular singles "With Me," "Insomnia" and debut hit "Ahndwaena-yo," signed the agreement with Universal Music in which the record label will distribute and invest in the singer's forthcoming North American release.

Acclaimed local producer and songwriter Kim Hyung-suk was instrumental as the middle man between the two camps, recommending Wheesung to an acquaintance of Jerkins.

"After getting wind of Rodney being on the prowl for a singer from Asia to work with, I recommended Wheesung as someone who can stand toe-to-toe in the American R&B market," Kim said. "After Rodney heard (Hweesung's) songs, he immediately decided to work with him -- songwriters both local and overseas are coveting his services."

Jerkins is widely regarded as one of the most respected figures in the North American music scene, and the pool of talent the 32-year-old has worked with reads like a who's who of the pop-R&B genre.

An eight-time Grammy winner, the highly sought-after Jerkins has farmed out his talents for artists like Michael Jackson (You Rock My World), Britney Spears (Overprotected), Janet Jackson (Feedback), Destiny's Child (Lose My Breath, Say My Name), Beyonce (Deja Vu) and contributed producing duties for Whitney Houston, TLC, Tony Braxton and among others.

According to Pop Up Entertainment, Wheesung is currently in the United States finishing recordings for two songs.

"The American music market isn't something that is easily approached so we are preparing in a timely and patient manner," they said in a statement. "For an Asian singer to cut a deal with a major North American record label is unprecedented, so we will tackle the industry through bold strategic marketing.

According to the statement, Jerkins calls Wheesung's vocal talents are "comparable to any top-tier American talent," and the producer is currently working to set up collaborations between the Korean singer and American stars such as Usher, Ne-Yo and Akon.

Of the deal, the singer himself said he was overjoyed with the unexpected deal and that "the higher the mountain and the more treacherous the path, the hungrier I've become to overcome those hurdles."

Wheesung Eyes U.S. Market with 'Darkchild'

Another popular Korean singer has gone off the reservation and into the North American pop market.

But whether or not the elated singer will see success is another story.

His predecessors have come and gone, tried and failed to break into the promised land that is the North American market.

"World star" Rain has yet to make a splash, Se7en has been MIA since crossing the Pacific a year ago and JYP Entertainment's Wonder Girls have been relegated to opening for popular Nickelodeon kiddy band the Jonas Brothers.

Wednesday November 25, 2009 Korea

After feeling ill on the 21st, singer Wheesung went to a hospital and on the 23rd he was diagnosed with swine flu. However he was treated with Tamiflu and is reported to be recovering well. If you recall, he was also the only person that K.Will kept in touch with when he himself had the virus.

A representative from POP/UP Entertainment said:

"After receiving the Tamiflu treatment, his fever went down almost immediately and he's almost at a state of full recovery. Today we plan to revisit the hospital and check up on his status."

It's good to hear that he's quickly recovering but unfortunately this meant that he was not able to attend the showcase, "Fill Korea, K-POP Night" in Shanghai, China. Many fans may be disappointed but on a brighter note, it has been reported that he will be appearing on the November 26th episode of Music Bank.

He presented a spectacular three-hour show.

Whee Sung held a solo concert entitled “Tokyo Whee Show” in Japan on Sunday, where he fascinated some 2,000 fans with his resonant voice, powerful dancing and appealing falsetto.

The Korean singer was accompanied by a team of 40 crew members who built a grand set and created fancy video images for the concert, and a background chorus and dancers who made the concert more exciting.

Appearing on the stage from the middle of the center stairs that were split into two, Whee first sang “Why Can’t It Be?” He performed a total of 21 songs from his own albums and the albums of Japanese singer Mika Nakajshima.

He did not just sing but wowed the fans with various tricks. When singing “Walking the Sky,” to his fans' surprise, he--wearing a cloak--vanished from the stage while climbing the center stairs and reappeared among the audience. He performed “Insomnia” in the form of a musical.

Many Korean fans also attended to cheer on Whee since it was his first solo concert in Japan. Actor Yoo Tae-woong was also there to congratulate him.

“I will do my best to give a better performance when I hold a concert again in Japan,” Whee said. “I will work hard to go on beyond Korea, Japan and Asia to the world stage. I ask you for your continuous support.”

In an interview with Yonhap News after the concert, he said, “I learned a lot from this experience. I will keep trying to be better as I get to know what I lack and need to improve.”

He lastly thanked his Japanese fans for their genuine support and interest. He said, “I am so happy to see you enjoy my show. I will never stop pushing myself to be the best.”
