Oscar winner Forest Whitaker started his first trip to South Africa in style yesterday - by meeting his hero Nelson Mandela. The star met with the former South African leader as part of a family trip to the country. Whitaker, his wife and their three daughters are touring Africa as guests of the country's tourism officials.
The thrilled actor says, "South Africa is a place that we, as a family, have been looking forward to visiting for quite some time."
As well as meeting Mandela, Whitaker also met with students from the University Of Johannesburg, and told them he had to beat a handful of South African actors to portray Ugandan dictator Idi Amin in The Last King Of Scotland.
He explained, "I was not the director's first choice for the Idi Amin role. African actors did audition for the role but I ended up being their final choice."
