They say that if you cut your nails at night, you might see a ghost or a ghost might come visit you. That is what I've been told

I've cut my nails at night plenty of times and I've slept fine.
But maybe it's also a psychological thing, and people are just scaring
themselves. Interesting superstition though..

I haven't heard of the one about ghosts visiting you, but my parents have told me people gossip behind you if you cut your nails at night. I doubt thats true though, since its not like the entire world will know when I cut my nails.

Okay, that means I can't cut my nails at night anymore?

Note to self: Remember to bring nail cutter to school and do it at work in the future.

(Okay, better stop the sarcasm, right?)

But I don't think it's true since I'm a chicken myself but don't see anything happening since that's when I actually have time to do anything else.

what i heard from my dad is dont cut your fingernails at night or your fathers back will break. and i did it one night without even thinking about it . a few weeks later my dad called me ( i live in another city then my dad) and he told me that he broke his back. he is a tennis teacher and he broke or did something to his back. i felt soo bad. but i really think that it was just a coincidence but it still freaks me out.

ahahah ive always been told that! and like you been wondering WHY??

and finally i asked my dad......and he said this:

"aaaagh dont listen to all that stupid old people sayings!.....they say dont cut your nails at night because long time ago, the only light they had during the night was to use candles, now candle light is not that bright....so if you tried to cut your nails with candle light during then you might cut yourself"

ahahah now that does make alot of sense but now we have light globes.....so i say just cut your nails lol

this saying is also they same with "dont open the umbrella in the house other wise a snake will come" what they actually mean is dont open the umbrella otherwise you might poke someone in the eye ahahah they just trying to scare the kids in olden days.

i prefer to cut my nails at night because when you wake up, the night times gives it time to heal so the edges are a bit smoother.

Surely, it is supersitious, how can i make it during the day in the office ?
not to do at night, probably to avoid injury due to insufficient light, i think !

Ppl, use some logic..... ppl back then use SCISSOR to cut nail and there was no electricity. There was chance of cutting your toe/finger. Back then, adults probably told kids not to do it by telling them the reason, but they didnt listen, thats how kids are. So, then adults need to make it a superstition. U ppl are bunch of fools. lol

The title sounds like broken english, anyway, Most rules like these are usually from religious beliefs. In the olden days they would usually say not to _____ because of a certain reason, but instead of telling people the reason, they would say (insert religious belief) would get angry if you do it. Doing so, is more effective on people to listen.

Oops, I just cut my nails and it's night time..oh well..

I've heard of this before and I think it has been brought down since our grandma/grandpa's age because of insufficient light at night and accidents happened I guess. Most people would have to cut their nails either in the evening or at night since everyone is busy with school and work, and hey, will the ghosts only visit 'Asians'? I doubt that the westerners were given the same advice by their parents.

I don't think it has got something to do with ghosts...right?

..Fingers crossed.. :whistle

hohoho... seems like no one here reads XxXholic. If you do cut your fingernails at night, you cant attend your parents funeral. While the main character was cutting his nail obviously at night, the sliding door opens and a big big evil scissors appeared to cut off his head therefore rendering him not able to attend his parents funeral and so the story goes.

like all other say, its due to freak accidents due to the fact that during the olden days there were no nail cutters and big scissors used to cut cloth were used to cut your finger nails. guess what.. go try and test the sharpness of those type of scissors. And yes you guessed it... cut-off fingers were the results.

It is also a taboo to cut fingers at night in where I live, it seems most Asian peoples share the same taboo rules.

As for the reason, my mom said that if you do it you will have bad luck.

That's weird...I cut my nails at night all the time and nothing unusual has ever happened to me...I wonder what kind of superstition this is.
