Chinese Hollywood actress Zhang Ziyi was accused of lip-synching during the annual Spring Festival evening gala broadcast live on Wednesday night. The China Central Television (CCTV) program enjoys top audience ratings worldwide among Chinese.

Zhang, 29, an internationally recognized Chinese actress, lit up the stage with a pink outfit that drew envious gasps from ordinary girls.

She sang "Fairy Scattering Flowers," which was specially composed for her by leading musician Ji Zhongping. Zhang was alone on stage during the performance.

Comments at Sina.com, a major Chinese news portal, were not too kind. Posters said that her performance was just ordinary and she had no real singing skill; it was just her fame that got her audience attention. The complaints about the program started to appear almost as soon as the show signed off at about 1:00 a.m.

An article in the Modern Express, a newspaper based in Nanjing, capital of eastern Jiangsu Province, said that lip-synching was common during the annual CCTV gala due to "hardware problems".

"Lip-synching at the gala is a tradition," it said, adding Zhang came in for public criticism because "she was an amateur singer who was not well-prepared and even forgot words". The article attributed her poor performance to "a lack of experience".

But Zhang thought she did well. "Fairy Scattering Flowers symbolizes happiness and auspiciousness. 2008 is especially important for Beijing and China and each of us. I wish spring would come earlier so that the snow in disaster areas would melt soon," she told reporters.

The gala's general director, Chen Linchun, suggested that Zhang's performance had actually been live and "was not broadcast from video".

Zhang made her name with the martial arts blockbuster "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and with "Memoirs of a Geisha", among others. She was once director Zhang Yimou's favored actress. They collaborated on "The Road Home", "Hero" and "House of Flying Daggers".

Every year, CCTV holds a special on Lunar New Year's Eve, featuring dances, songs and short comedies. This year, the gala had another theme: unity and the courage of the people to cope with the snow disaster.

A survey on Sina.com showed that among the performances at this year's gala, "Blue and White Porcelain" by Taiwan singer Jay Chou ranked top among the viewers, with the second and third places taken by girl pop group S.H.E. and Fei Yu-ching, both from Taiwan.

The annual Spring Festival gala celebration started in the 1980s. Since then, it has been the most popular TV event, attracting a major portion of China's 1.3 billion population on Lunar New Year's Eve each year.

Stand-up comedy routines and "cross-talk" among performers have been among the most popular parts of the program since 2000. However, for some years, audiences have been expressing disappointment at timeworn routines and overly familiar entertainers.

But this year's audience survey showed that young people were excited to see such pop stars as Jay Chou.

The Beijing-based Legal Evening News surveyed 800 Chinese, among whom 153 said they did not watch the gala, as "there are many other means of entertainment".

More than 80 percent of the respondents watched the show with their families, eight percentage points more than in last year's survey by the same newspaper. They believed that "watching the gala had become a habit" and "the snow disaster thwarted travel plans so they had nowhere to go".

The survey found that "about 60 percent of the audience are satisfied with the show" and that "37 percent think it is better than last year". Respondents said the gala had many new components, including the snow disaster, the Olympics and the country's lunar probe, Chang'e-1.

An epic -- "Warm 2008" -- praising disaster-relief efforts, was penned by leading poets to boost national morale in the wake of the snow disaster. It was expressively recited and movingly performed by famous artists, TV anchors and entertainment stars.

A lady surnamed Zhu from the northern region of Inner Mongolia said that the poem recital was creative and worth watching a second time, as she found warmth and inspiration in it.

the dress is ugly...
and the hair look weird,
i dont even know that she sings so i dont really care..
but using the excuse of fearing she might forgot the lyrics to allow her lipsync is so wrong...
this is supposed to her song,
she supposed to be well versed with it already by now...
not well prepared?
she should be for something as exciting as this...
ah well hopefully in time she will do better and soon we will be able to hear she sings live...
<_<

Lip-synching is a Hollywood thing. I heard that if artist sings in those kinds of events the artist will want some $$$ in return so, to save money they have the artist Lip-synching.

Regardless, know one knows if Zhang Ziyi can really sing or not, but really who cares?

I saw it and she is only paid to stand on stage. Nothing meaningful only a figure head.

Just because you can act doesn't mean you can sing... I'm tired of actors trying to become singers and singers trying to become actors, there are only a few that can do both well, others that can't really should just stick to their profession.

I thought Zhang ZiYi was known to be well-dressed but that dress is so hideous... she looks like a badly dressed barbie doll

ehhh. i didn't know she sings... but i guess thats because she wasn't all that good to begin with... otherwise she'd be all the rage in the music industry...

but... YAAAAAAYYYYY!!! For Jay Chou and S.H.E!!! I love them!!!!! =)

I actually watched the CCTV's New Year Gala live...and I have to say that her singing voice leaves much to be desired. Granted it wasn't a bad performance...but it was far from good. The song has a very sweet melody...but her husky singing voice didn't really complement it. That song would have suited someone like Selina from S.H.E a lot better.

I think viewers have a right to say what they want as if it weren't for them all of these celebrities wouldn't be celebrities. As well, she deserved to get slammed, she, after all, is supposedly a professional, at least that's what she wants people to believe, so she should have been prepared.

Actually her first time singing was in House of Flying Daggers. She's not a professional singer but she's better than people who can't sing at all.
I felt like they just used her image for this year's gala but didn't really incorporate her into it. It was just really weird watching her. The dress was so big though, lol, but at least she stood out right? Anyways I didn't like her voice even though she was lip-syncing but I can't deny that she is a talented actress.

The dress is killing it for her...

I haven't heard her sing and from what everybody is saying, I'm not sure if I really want to. But there seems to be a lot of ppl that critisize her...

I would've been in that category a couple months ago...but she's ok. lol.

Why do people give her so much grief? I've been a fan of hers ever since I saw her in The Road Home. I saw the clip of her performance on YouTube, and her voice sounds processed, so I'm guessing that it was a prerecorded track, but so what?

omg! i don't get it. there are certain people that should stay as an actor/actress and she is one of it. singing is not for her. no offense for those of her fans, but she should really stay away from the singing area. china has too many talented singer why chose her? i don't get it!

I think this really shows how little they actually respect her. Do you think they ask SF Ballet principle dancer, Yuan Yuan Tan, to do this? Probably not.

ZZY was first and foremost a dancer, not an actress, and certainly not a singer. The fact that they made her get into a cheap version of the Jordan (Katie Price) wedding dress and made her sing something pretty much guarantees her to be fodder for the critics. I really dislike her and the sh*t she passes for acting anyway so oh well.

The Jordan Wedding dress for anyone who isn't in the UK or doesn't know of her:

I'm sorry, but the overall appearance is unflattering.
The dress is overkill, and the hair doesn't do much justice either.

But then again, people have different tastes - I just happen to be opposing that look.

Also, I guess lip-syncing leaves little room for error. LOL.
