ORIENTAL DAILY NEWS - Priscilla Chan was once a megastar with her hit song Thousands of Songs. The essence of Hong Kong music has now changed, and even the fans' tastes have changed. The industry has become a world of idols. The truly talented singers are left with nowhere to stand. Priscilla's latest album only sold 8,000 copies, with results about the same as a new singer. This is truly sad and makes Priscilla feel disheartened. We need to loudly ask, "What do we do with Hong Kong's music industry?" This year is Priscilla's 20th year as an artist. She appeared two nights ago as a special guest at Chow Kai-Seng's concert and performed Paula Tsui's hit Futile. Chow complimented on her singing but Priscilla could only sigh and say, "Unfortunately it's rare that they would like this song in today's music industry, everyone likes the idol more." At the concert's post-party, Priscilla reacted to her expired contract with record label Universal Music: "My contract expired with Universal, and my contract with my manager expires at the end of this year. After my concert, there is a huge opportunity for me to return to school. Next year, I want to apply for a Hong Kong University Master's degree in psychology, and won't go abroad to study, because of my boyfriend and Hong Kong, and I don't want to leave again like I did before." When asked if Priscilla would never sing again, she responds, "Last year I put a lot of effort into the album, and Universal put out a lot of money to promote it. But it only sold 8,000 copies, and it's hard to compare with before. I feel very dissatisfied. How to resolve Hong Kong's music industry? The audience only want to see entertainers, and haven't used their true heart to listen to music. Even though I really love to sing, there are no [market] reactions. Right now the audience created this so they have to live with it. They like to watch their idols, so the business has no good music." Are you disappointed in the music industry? Priscilla says, "[My disappointment is] with the audience, the listeners. Before there are people who truly listen to music. Right now they just look at entertainers. A large part of them just go with the flow, only a small part of people listen to music. In life there are many things that are worth pursuing, and it doesn't stop within the entertainment circle. Maybe if I leave and go it might be much more meaningful."

It's true what she says, when people talk about singers or actors now, they first say how hot he or she looks, what clothes she wore, what people he dated, who he/she should be with, and the movie and song's quality comes last.

But priscilla chan, isn't she like 35 or something? still going back to school?

I totally agree with what she is saying...some people just don't care about the music itself anymore, that is the very same reason why there are so many singers nowadays that are picked off the street, some are off model agencies....

HK music industry might have to experience downhill again...

Priscilla Chan Wai Han two nights ago was a guest performer at Chow Kai Sang's concert and performed Paula Tsui Siu Fung's hit HELPLESS (MO NOI). When Chow praised her singing, Wai Han sighed, "Too bad today's music scene has very few listeners who like music. Everyone likes idols more." At the post party she said, "My contract with Universal has ended. At the end of the year my contract with my manager would end too. After the concert tour, I have a good chance of going back to school. I want to enroll in Hong Kong University's psychology master's program. I won't study aboard because my boyfriend is in Hong Kong. I don't want a repeat of what happened before."
The press said if she would sing again. She said angrily, "Last year I put a lot of effort into the disk. Universal put a lot of money into its promotion but it only sold 8,000 copies, which is hard to compared to the 80,000 copies of the past. I was very dissatisfied. What happened to the Hong Kong music scene? The viewers only want to watch people who are entertaining and don't really listen to the music. Although I really like to sing, people haven't been responsive so singing would be a waste anyway. Now the audience gets what it deserves. They like to watch their idols and the music scene has no good music. I am disappointed in the audience, the listeners. People used to really listen to music, now they watch artists perform. Most people have gone with the flow, very few really listen to music. Life has many things that are worth my pursuing, not just show business. Maybe occasionally coming back for fun would be more meaningful."
