ArJoe is the name given to Ariel Lin and Joe Cheng by fans. Most of us started out knowing them as
Jiang Zhi Shu and Yuan Xiang Qin in It Started With A Kiss and got to know them more in They Kiss Again. Friendship And Love: The thin line that separates

Recently, the term very good friends is always used to describe the current relationship of popular Taiwanese stars Zheng Yuan Chang and Lin Yi Chen. They themselves claim that they are indeed very good friends. Fans of the onscreen couple would love to hear them declare the most awaited confession. Why so, in the boob tube, their undeniable chemistry radiates onscreen, and they were awarded as best on screen couple. In real life, it is common knowledge that they are quite close, sharing the same interests, view in life and both come from a common family background and have gone through a lot before enjoying the popularity they now have. Everyone waits with batted breath as to when this most anticipated event will take place. But their constant declaration, "we are just good friends" dampen the spirits of romantics who have witnessed their story unfold right before their eyes. Just friends… Is friendship such a bad thing?

Lovers Should Be Friends

Experts say that for romantic love to stand the test of time and any difficulty in the long run, lovers should be the best of friends. J. Gottman, therapist and author of the book "The Seven Principles of Making A Marriage Work" (1999) states that "if there is one component that will enable a couple to weather the tough times, it is friendship." In fact in his book he mentioned that "studies show that happy marriages are based on the foundation of a good friendship."

People may say, just friends but friendship, in the truest sense of the word, accepts the other person selflessly and without reservations. This is a person who knows you, flaws and all but likes you and accepts you anyway. It is the person who understands you, allows you to grow without restraint and supports you all the way.

Friendship Makes Communication Easier

In a lot of videos and interviews, people have seen and heard countless of times how Joe and Ariel understand each other. Joe has talked about the real Ariel and understands the little quirks that come with her personality. He is aware of it and yet accepts it and most of the time, does not consider it a problem. (HK interview: "If she does not finish what she says, I will ask her… that's why I can communicate well with her.") Ariel on the other hand, knows that the real Joe loves himself, is a little protective of himself but is not afraid to share and open up to people, that's why he is the life of the party. (HK Compatibility test, interpretation of Ariel's drawing of Joe) Good communication is essential to any kind of relationship and this can be put to good use in bad times. Knowing when and what to say to the other party is important to avoid misunderstandings. For lovers to last, they should enjoy their time together like good friends do. (Chang-Winterhoffer, 2008, Intimates Defined, private study papers, NY, NY)They should be able to laugh at each other and make each other laugh. Joe always makes Ariel laugh; she is open and expresses herself more when she is with him. Further more, even if it is only for fun, they are able to show how close they are. During the LoB promotions on the show "I Love Blackie", they lost in a game and had to put moles on each other's faces. We all know that Joe is very particular when it comes to his appearance but Ariel dared to make him look funny. She was even laughing the whole time and Joe gamely acted like a dog to further crack her up, she laughed so hard she had to sit on the floor for a while. The mere fact that she was able to do this shows the level of intimacy that they have. She is confident that it will be okay for him because she knows her place in his life. Together, they are able to poke fun at themselves without worrying how the other person may feel. Laughter adds so much life to any relationship. This releases tension and creates a source of happy memories that will bind them even more. And good friends always have a good time, just like they do when they are together.

Familiarity Breeds Content

In Rowland Miller's book "Intimate Relationships" (2006) he states that "the propinquity effect can be defined as the more we see and interact with a person, the more likely he or she is to become our friend and intimate partner."

We always hear them say that they are good friends and are so familiar with each other that's why they don't have a chance to develop further.

Experts say that people who are familiar with each other "have the best chance to have a good and lasting relationship because they share a common history, a common memory of times spent together."(Chang-Winterhoffer, 2008) They are way past the getting to know each other stage thus allowing themselves to grow together and plan their future and perceive a life together with ease.

Two Contracts

When a man and a woman are in a romantic relationship, they actually have two contracts, lovers and friends. (Chang-Winterhoffer, 2008) If you are friends with your significant other, you have each other's interest at heart. Friends don't betray you and they will be your staunch supporter.

Sonnet XVII talks about the intimacy of two individuals who, through several factors have become a single unit. We have seen the GBA clips and this is rather evident. After taking a bow, the first thing that came to Ariel's mind was to call Joe to join her on stage. She even waited for him and let him speak first before she said her piece.

It has also become second nature for them to function as a single unit. Their interviews are peppered with "we" statements when answering questions ranging from the trivial to the important aspects of their selves like their view in life and family values." Whether it be a grand event like the GBA or an everyday situation like their shooting, (TKA NG at Matsu, Ariel would hide on Joe's shoulder every time she would make a mistake; TKA plane ride, she pulled on his collar; LoB shoot where an umbrella was about to fall on Joe, he ran towards Ariel's direction, she patted his back) they always run to each other for support.

Kelley, et al, 1983 states that" two people are in a relationship with one another if they impact on each other, if they are interdependent in the sense that a change in one person causes a change in the other."

Ariel and Joe clearly fall into that category.

According to Jung, (The Archetype and the Collective Unconscious, 1981, Collected Works) "whatever we are highly identified within our character, the opposite extreme will be in our unconscious." He called this "the law of opposites. Unconsciously, we will attract a part of ourselves that we badly need."

Ariel is known to be an introvert. Very reserved and quiet, we always hear Joe saying that in order for her to open up; you need to gain her trust. She is focused and serious when it comes to her craft and is a very organized person. Joe on the other hand, is the extrovert. According to Ariel, he is always the life of the party, has the knack of making people feel comfortable around him and has the easy-going carefree attitude that she sometimes wishes to have.

Two extremely different personalities who, through time complimented each other so much so that it allowed them to grow individually.

In their interviews they talked about how they have influenced each other. Ariel mentioned that while they were on a plane, she found herself busy watching movies and reading scripts using 3C products while Joe read a book. It is common knowledge among their fans that Joe is into 3C products while Ariel loves to read. And the influence does not end there. Joe learned to be organized in planning his time, his finances and his work habits because of Ariel. She on the other hand, learned to be more relaxed and not put too much pressure on herself. Recently' she also tried modeling, something that she did not see herself doing before. Joe, being a model himself, was there to give her some pointers and of course, to support her.

Lately, Ariel has been in the news because she decided to join the music industry by signing with Avex for a three-year contract. During the interview at her launch, she mentioned that Joe visited her while she was recording. And at Joe's recent interview during the opening of Hugo Boss' Taipei 101 store, he expressed his enthusiasm and support for her new endeavor.

What is interesting to note is that even if they influence each other, they still celebrate each other's individuality while sharing common goals, which is essential if two people are to share a life together.

Friends compliment each other by breadth, uniqueness and efficiency of interaction. In The Portable Carl Jung (a compilation, 1976) it is said that "inner states of consciousness will reflect in outer situations time and again. The psyche is always striving for wholeness and if we can take our cues from nature, we will see that wholeness is balance." From these observations, it can clearly be said that Joe and Ariel balance each other out.

We have seen how Joe takes care of Ariel. It may be as trivial as taking care of her water bottle, getting her tissues, wiping her face, checking her dress, fixing her hair or shading her from the sun by carrying an umbrella. Joe has been true to what Ariel fondly calls him, her Shu or tree that not only shades her from the sun but from life's unexpected complexities as well. She in turn, feeds him, pats his back, gives him self-made cards and to Joe, she is so much more than what people perceive her to be. And we are just stating things that we have seen from the videos and pictures.

Robert Hinde, in his paper "On Defining Relationships" (Cambridge University, MRC Unit on the Development and Integration behavior, 1981) observed that "the anxiety induced by strange objects or situations is alleviated by the presence of the partner." Recently, we saw this at the YSL event. Joe decided to attend the event at the last minute and we saw that he was mainly there to support Ariel since this is her first appearance after admitting that she underwent surgery. Before this, Joe acted like Ariel's spokesperson assuring everyone that she was okay and doing well. And since her recovery from the operation, she herself admitted that she had mood swings. But Joe didn't seem to mind, as a matter of fact, when he was interviewed, he said she was okay. Ariel and Joe do not seem to mind each other's quirks. We know that they are not perfect, since no one is, but whatever minor differences they have obviously, do not matter to them. Friends are always ready to understand even it seems impossible to do so. And loyalty is one of their traits.

Love Life

Ariel not attending Joe's play seemed to have caused quite a stir among their fans and followers. A lot of people who want to see them together since they have witnessed every single event that may lead them to believe so were disappointed and some were even inconsolable for days. Such is the effect of the mystery of Joe and Ariel's relationship. People feel sad because they believe that since they have seen every move and heard what they have to say for them, they actually believe they know what is going on. But do we really know the real situation?

From their first hosting job, viewers were able to witness their amazing chemistry, like two people who are longtime friends, especially when they started talking about a common childhood memory. From here, it can be said that given time, friendship or even something deeper can most likely be developed.

It has been four years and clearly, this is a relationship that was nurtured through time. They have been through physical separation, have worked with other people and lately, Ariel's health problem.

The level of their relationship now goes beyond the common ideas of love and friendship. They have gone through the possibility of being separated not by another party but by a personal health crisis. And it can be said that after emerging from that experience, the relationship is certainly on a different level.

Hinde's paper also mentions that "in the absence of the other, each partner shows special types of behavior adapted to or tending to restore proximity." In the clips of Ariel's charity event, there were a lot of moments where Joe's presence was felt. The scripts that were written had his name on it; there was even a video from their series that was flashed on screen while she was singing. It should be noted that they are not promoting anything and if she felt uncomfortable, she should have said no, but the event and the numbers were rehearsed and obviously, it was done with her consent. We always wondered why their names always come up even if they are being interviewed separately. This restoration of proximity and special types of behavior adapted to still be connected to the partner is a normal behavior of Joe and Ariel.

Ariel went to a charity event to support underprivileged children's education at Changsa and flew to Sichuan province to visit survivors of the earthquake that's why she was not able to go to Joe's play. Coming from a recent brush with mortality, her focus would be on sending the message of hope and love to those people who need it. And Joe obviously understands this, for they share the same direction and view in life. It is a known fact that Joe has 11 scholars and has also been known to support charitable institutions, specially the education of the underprivileged children. The quote from Fromm says it all. Love does evolve and can reach a different scale and now involves the thing that is closest to their hearts, the pain that they recently experienced through Ariel's sickness. People should commend them for turning this into something that will inspire and help people who may be in the same situation.

Ariel and Joe's statement "we are just good friends", may be a cause of worry for most people who long for them to be together, not just onscreen but in real life as well. But through the years, we know that whatever relationship they have was nurtured by time and continues to develop every single day. Friends? They should be. I still don't have any goodies to share yet...but I was rewatching GBA last night...hehe...Ariel really loved to sit with Joe... I mean she could have sit with Rainie but nope..she chose to sit with joe and his friends.....aka Eddie is one of them..then 2 days later..they went to watch concert together? Joe went with Eddie and somehow they accidentally end up sitting next to each other? lol well i think it worked cos some people still believe that...haha they are so just friends...hehe (mommy and mommy sg don't kick me...i already kicked my doubt to pluto!!) Weeeee! On the last thread, we were like more confused and eager about their relationship.. we just can't wait for them to be together.. (gosh..haha) but in the end, we learned to be more patient and with the help of our resident psychologists, understands them more.. we "backed out" a little and enjoyed heartwarming times with them.. now, at this moment, i mean precious moment, we'll continue to share xinfu with them as one entity and "silently" (ehem) follow their private lives (i hope..hehe)

Hi..Hi...Keaw, I'm not going to kick you. We are nice and civil here. Joe said he and Ariel are not dating because of their busy schedule. He didn't say he doesn't want to date her. LOL. He also said since they are busy, every time they meet up is for some big events. They meet to read over the script (which Joe managed to drag that out to 2 days ). They meet to visit a common friend's grave. I guess he was talking about Wei Lun's grave. Hm..I wonder why Ariel asked Joe to go visit Wei Lun's grave after the GBA (instead of Rainnie). Joe forgot to mention the concert that Keaw was talking about. That's right. Joe was with Eddie. And they bumped into Ariel at the concert. Very unlikely. Just like how they bumped into each other at Japan's airport.

Joe wants to live an ordinary life. You can tell by listening to his interviews. He wants to be able to spend time with his gf without all the fussing in the world. But he can't because he is too popular. He rated himself 60 over 100 points mark as a boyfriend because he doesn't have time to spend with his gf (if he actually has one). I wish Joe stop beating himself up for that. He is a wonderful guy with a great heart. His girlfriend (if he has one) is very lucky to have him. And I'm sure she doesn't like listening to him worrying about her health or happiness either. The woman in Joe's heart is a strong lady. Once in a while she would run and hide behind him. But most of the time she can handle herself pretty well. And I'm sure she understand that he can't be with her all the time. Distance makes the heart grows fonder!
Ooops what am I saying? Joe is still single except he has one love rumour according to the media. And who is involved in this rumour? No one else other than his best friend Yichen...

I'm back again.. still staring at our wonderful TS.. really long and worth reading for.. I love the ArJoe Analysis, looks like I'm reading a book while reading it, I love the gifs, banners all the designs are so beautiful...Many thanks to all the angels and agents who contributed with our thread.

About Joe's vid, last vid subbed by the Villa Sisters.. I felt sad for Joe while he was stating his birthday wish.. He has this sad look that makes you feel that deepest sincerity with his voice and his eyes. He's wish is so simple but seems like his wish is really what he wanted to happen. The wish really tells us how he got so worried for Ariel.. He may not said it straight to the point but if you really look at him he will tell you that feelings deep inside of him.. And about the date thing.. Ok Joe, i will believe you, you're not dating Ariel, but how come that those he stated are such a big event already.. how about those times that they went for dinner with Stella, watch Ayumi's concert with Eddie, dine out with Shin and more coincident moments that they have seen together in such event.. Or maybe Joe has this special name for that kind of event..:buahaha

It’s a long article about Joe and his dreams. I love reading it. He is so smart and sweet. But what interest me the most was about his view in love life. He said he is alone and single. Dear Arjoe Sisters,

Congratulations for such a colorful, informative and very creative thread starter. I can only say "wow", it was well researched. I also felt like i was reading a book when i browse through the Arjoe analysis.

Somehow while reading through the thread, it entered my mind that when Arjoe do get married the above starter can already be packaged as a gift to them for it is already a part of their love story. They will just fill in the missing details to complete it.

Thank you for the beatiful banners, gifs, list of contributors ( i am honored to see my name first as it was in alphabetcal order, i felt so at home in our thread). Though, i don't post everyday but i do not miss a day in visiting our thread. Just like the other sisters here, Arjoe makes me smile and gives me the giddy feeling whenever i see or read of their sweetnes. They are the only on screen couple that i ever shipped. I never thought i will be so interested and intrigued about their relationship to do an indepth research about them to even join a forum to share my thoughts. I chose my name Agape because this is what i wish for them, to always have an unconditional love for each other.

I love Kassy's translated articles.. hihi!!~~ Thanks to her for the translations.. The first one which is posted yesterday.. As what my twin sister Kaew said, he didnt deny Ariel, he just said that marriage is a difficult thing and need a lot of preparation... Joe will surely be a good provider for his future family. He already work too hard and yet he thinks that it isn't enough.. Maybe he doesn't like his future kids to experience all the hardships that he and Ariel been went through.. About the second article, so he will consider having 6 kids now.. I thought he likes having 2 kids only and Ariel wants six, and a fortune teller friend (individual friend) said that they will have 3 kids.. LoL Joe is really following her Lao Po's wish now, after the secret marriage that his Lao Po is saying then now having 6 kids.. Gosh!!.. what else would he will do consider to give way for his Lao Po???...

Ni Hao Baobeis... I'm soooo kicked about thread number 5!! Thread 4 had started sometime around Ariel's Birthday and her GBA win, and we're already onto the next thread. Goes to show how much ArJoe affect our lives (and how much we like to talk and speculate about them!!)

How I wish that this fifth thread could be a harbinger of ArJoe's fifth collaboration ( but before that we need a 4th one, too!) I wish Winnie would direct ISWAK movie this year, so that we have much much more to be loony and moony about

I'm wondering why we don't have any CFs of them together. I mean both of them are popular and doing a lot of endorsements, but what is surprising that they havn't been paired together for any CF (correct me if I'm wrong, though). I so want to see the 2 of them together in some cute commercial! And it would be a great thing, too. They'll get to spend time together endorsing the brand. Good morning everyone! I've laughed so hard after watching the TKA BTS that Keaw posted. All the actors in TKA were so funny. And they were having a great time doing the drama. Ha..ha... Keaw is right. When Ariel made a mistake, she instantly hid her head in the curve of Joe's arm. How cute is that? It's a habit to her. hi...hi... And what's Joe habit? When her head was leaning into his arm, his right hand instantly reached up to cup her face. He wanted to do that but stopped in the middle. I guess he realized that oopps people were watching I'm sure sheepgirl and other resident psychologists can do a better analysis. But for me I recognize that those habits implicate that Ariel and Joe are very very close for a long time. Long enough for habits to form. ha..ha... I've been married for a while. And my husband and I always laugh about the things that we do unconsciously. For example, when he sits next to me, he would have a habit of putting his hand into my hand. Why? I don't know. Ariel has a habit of hiding behind Joe. And he likes it. He likes giving her the protection that she needs. The fact that his arm wanted to reach up and cup her face also tells me that he loves to caress her beautiful round face. Oh...Love is too beautiful for me to describe with words.

Wow new thread but the same old enthusiasm we always had since day one! It was such an informative thread you guys have made!

Anyway, I guess since Ariel is going toward music industry, our dear Joe will not leave her behind and let her progress on her own right? haha There's an article today on Joe and he said that he have a secret mission; he will be going into the music industry in the next half of this year, being an all rounder artiste.

Thanks Dear Jnara for Joe's secret news. It maks my day beautiful. I think he'll sign with same AVEX as Ariel according to the prior news that he's under dealing with the company. So it's high possibility for us to see Ariel as Joe's guest in his first album. Also they will collaborate to be a perfect duet

As they will be busy in their new career, so we might not see them on any series for quite some time

Even Ariel is now one step faster than Joe, but longer Joe's legs will make them on the same step eventually. And then they will walk together.

Do you girls remember when he was asked about the rumored contract with AVEX? Joe denied it.. Watch the video..i think it was the adidas party (sorry im bad at remembering links ^__^).. The way he denied it.. when i read Kathy's post, i remembered the way he avoids the questions regarding his relationship with Ariel.. isnt it similar? but that time i really cant tell if Joe is saying the truth or avoiding the rumor.. not until another thing came up (which is the post above)..

Joe is very consistent with his answers, i noticed but when he's completely sure its fine to say something, he'll change.. what im trying to say here that Joe is a really good actor..hehehe.. you will not be able to tell immediately if he is lying or not..

they are both venturing in music industry now huh.. so a possible collaboration for them in the near future is right ahead.. cant wait for both of them.. they grow together..haha..

Kathy, thanks for the gist of the article. Joe talked about doing an album before. But with this article, it really sounds like Joe will be doing it very soon. He even wants to be an all around artist. I'm so impress with Joe now. That's a big goal. I hope all his dreams will come true. Everyone knows Joe has a great voice. Sometime he sings out of tune. But if he works hard, he will achieve whatever goals he wants. That's admirable. It's funny that Joe said Ariel is his senior. That's what Joe said in the clip when they've met the first time. And Ariel was acting mad when she drilled him about his birthdate. ha..ha... They are so cute. Of course they should do a duet. I would love to listen to them. When they sing "The taste of bread" in TaiChung, I thought their voices sound so good together. And it will give them a chance to spend time with each other again...working of course. Knowing Joe, he would drag the practice out. So he could spend more time with his best friend

I’m speechless while reading about Arjoe analysis. That’s incredible!! Can’t imagine if Arjoe happen to visit this thread and raed all these analysis. What would they think? The more I read the more I love and appreciate Joe. Ariel must be the happiest and luckiest woman in the world.
